Just moved to Makiki from Diamond Head area. Loved the nail salon (Creative Nails) by my condo over there, but friends told me I had to try Makiki Nails. It's a short walk, so I figured I had to give them a go! I went with a friend and we made an appointment for a weekday evening. We were able to sit right away. The ladies were so kind and accommodating. I really wanted a white matte look on my nails. I opted for gel, which I hadn't done in a long while. They look awesome! I also got a regular pedicure with some nail art. Super happy with both. My friend got a pedicure with nail art. She was very happy as well. The ladies all remembered her from previous visits and we talked story. It's a good vibe in there! I'm stoked to live nearby this nail salon with fabulous service and good prices as well! I been going to Mary, first a couple years ago, and than I started going back again! Called to make an appointment and the manager said that I couldn't ask for a specific person to service me its first come first serve! I was a bit upset but went anyway and was able to get serviced by Mary! She does good work and has amazing customer service! However, the material they use there may be outdated and my nail just comes right off! The manager I do not know her name has a bad attitude and doesn't allow to request a specific tech! I went to Makiki nails a few times over the last year or two and got a pedicure and was satisfied. This time, I had someone who painfully poked my skin several times while trimming and cleaning skin. I was fearful it would bleed but it didn't seem to. She pained the nails but had such a thick coat of polishes that it bubbled, wrinkled and even completely rubbed off hours later when touched. I paid special attention to sit and dry for 30 min and then touch nothing and wear no shoes for two hours after that. read more

I went to get a fill for my full acrylic. Pretty simple request. The girl seemed to hate her job that should've been the red flag for me. Ugh! I don't know why I continue to go to this place the level of service provided is so crappy. Hate that it's convenient to where I live and that it's always not busy. Man I hate to do this because I've been going here for 12 YEARS - but the last couple experiences have been awful. Finally, after years of recommending this place, I would say to avoid unless all you care about is a cheap deal. This last visit - there were ants crawling all over the sinks and drying station. The drying station table cloth is filthy- disgusting. The nail brushes in the barbicide are super old and worn out. I had an appointment with Tracey- she's honestly the BEST one there- awesome at fills- but less customer oriented with me lately. She's kind of grumpy honestly! She snapped at me for pulling a hair off my finger while my nails were "still wet." Maybe she's overworked lately?! Anyway- the worst is - I got a pedi with the other girl- long hair- been there forever. I usually about her because she ALWAYS is too rough. I took a chance and told her- I have foot pain- severe -- from years of ballet and now running in heels for events at work, and I have problems specifically with losing my big toenail and pain that feels like ingrown toenails. I pointed out my big toes and where it's sensitive and asked her to be gentle and avoid. She didn't listen one bit. She cut my nail so far down along the cuticle I cried out on pain and BLED. And was still bleeding an hour later. To top it off, she was in such a rush, it wasn't relaxing at all. I think I'd rather do my own pedis rather than come back and I'm sooo sad to say that. I'm mixed because while my gel nails do seem to be done well (we'll see in a couple of days), I've never been to a place that makes me bleed from being overly aggressive. I understand if I had a slight ingrown toe nail she may have tried to gently lift it or let me know...but I was shocked when I thought that she was continuously pulling and ripping at what I thought was skin, was actually my "ingrown" toe nail. After looking at my toe I was confused because it really jus looked like she was ripping at the natural place your toe goes into your foot. She then gave no warning and put on a liquid that burned tremendously, telling me it was for sanitizing. I was looking for a nail salon near my home in the Punchbowl area of Honolulu and thought of Makiki Nails as my lanai granddaughter loved the place. Now I see why. Malena was delightful. She was careful, thorough, and did a great job inspire of the fact that I have not had a pedi in a couple of years due to Covid and other stuff. She was careful of my ingrown large toenails and my relief was immediate. The salon is clean, inviting, and quite airy even though small. There were three technicians on duty and Malena was obviously the most experienced. She kept me completely entertained, with her softly spoken down-to-earth comments. I got a gentle chiding for letting my nails go so long, but you can bet that I will be returning, and I will be asking for Malena again. Been coming here for seven years monthly for pedis and still LOVING it! I see Tracy by appointment and she is still the best. Strong hands, careful, precise, and meticulous with her work. We've built a great relationship and she's funny, kind, and basically runs the whole place. She speaks the best English and communicates very well. She'll help out the others if they need. They, too, are nice and do a fantastic job. But, for me, I won't go to anyone but Tracy (old habits die hard). Parking is easy in the lot in the back. Their chairs are comfy (but starting to get older). They do men more and more (so listen up guys: we love nicely manicured toes!)...but they do pedis, manis, waxing, color changes, gel, anything nail-ish. Oh Yelpers, you've led me astray. I got a regular pedicure and a gel manicure. The pedicure was average. I appreciated the callous removal at no extra charge. The gel manicure, on the other hand, was one of the worst ones I've had. I wanted a gel french manicure and the manicurist didn't put the clear coating very close to my cuticle or towards the side edges of my nails. Since it's clear, you can't really notice it. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that part until I got home. She applied the white gel for the french tips and she had a hard time making the tips even and clean. I made her re-do 8 of my tips because they looked bad. That's a horrible manicurist if you ask me. 1 or 2 re-do's? I'll let that slide. But NOT 8!!! If I'm going to pay someone to paint my nails, I want it to look perfect! You get what you pay for. This place is on the cheaper end and these gals certainly do not take pride in their work. I am a regular at Makiki Nails and I love this place. It's a not a fancy looking place, but the service and price can't be beat. The girls are friendly and I love Tracy, she is very nice and the quality of work is equal or better than most places I have been to. I don't know much about the other girls, they have new ones there, but I know Mary and Thi are also very good. I haven't seen Thi and after reading some Yelp reviews, I found out she doesn't work there anymore. I did have another new lady once, but I forgot her name. She was also very good. I looked high and low at other salons for a good pedicure for awhile and then yelped Makiki Nails and haven't left there since. I recommend this place to classmates from school and co-workers and actually had a classmate tell me she went there and thought it was very good. I usually go to Nail Boutique which is across Ala Moana between Fitted and Bank of Hawaii but I felt like trying something different. I read in earlier reviews that they can get pretty crazy so I went in the morning and was lucky enough to be the third person there so I didn't have to wait at all. The lady that did my pedicure wasn't very talkative which I like because I zone out a lot when I get my pedicure (^_^). She did try to get me to get nail art or glitter, which I understand she has to do because it's her job but I just simply said no thank you and she left it at that. I also got a foot and leg massage which was great and had me so relaxed. They have this machine ((I dont know what its called)) that you can put your hands and feet in to dry your nails faster and I thought that was just so cool..((Nail Boutique only has those tiny fans that you put your nails in front of)) It is clean and neat and they have a lot of colors to choose from. I got the french tip and it was $27 for a pedicure with french tip. Now I dont know about you but that is $10 less than what I pay at Nail Boutique and I think that that was great!! Of course paying more to go to a sanitary place makes sense but this place was just fine and clean to me. Now I know where I want to go to when I just want a regular french tip pedicure until I have the urge to try out someplace else. Parking is ok..Theres a lot behind it but they have to share it with about five other stores and they COULD get a little crowded but its not too bad. Usually someone is always leaving.. All in all I think that this place is great OH!! before I forget. after I left and just got home, I am such a klutz and stepped on one of my toes which weren't completely dry. I went back to Makiki Nails to get it redone...I had to wait a little bit just because it got a little crowded but the lady that did my pedicure remembered me and assumed I messed it up and laughed when I told her what happened..She redid my nail and after drying it ((completely)) she said I could go. I come here because it's literally a 2 min walk from my house, most of the time it's slow and the girls are just sitting around on their phone but when I call for a walk in they say their busy and can't accept anyone. Okay, so I know that I said that my exprience here wasn't that good before when I got my manicure. The thing is though, I really wanted a pedicure and makiki nails was the nearest Salon so I decided to try give them another chance. And boy, was my pedicure different from my manicure. The funny thing is, the same lady did both, but I enjoyed the pedicure so much more. I was real lucky when I came here since I decided to walk in and there was only one spot left. The lady that after me had to be told to wait 30 min. I loved how they thoroughly scrubbed, lotioned, and massage my feet. Plus, no cut cuticles! Although they only have a limited color selection, I found a nice baby blue that I liked and chose a simple flower design. I though it was kind of funny when she asked me if I wanted to get my eye brows plucked. I told her that I didn't since my eyebrows are your typical Asian eyebrows, big but thin. You would even be able to see them if I got them plucked! The lesson I learned that was although I didn't like their manicures as much, they can do some pretty good pedicures. Try to avoid this place if you can. Me and my co-worker decided to get mani/pedis and called the day before to make an appointment. They didnt even take down our names or anything. When we arrived, they seemed confused and didn't even have our appointments written down. Luckily there was only one other customer there so we were able to be taken in right away. The ladies there weren't very friendly and the person doing my pedi didn't say one word to me. The quality of the pedicure was so-so. Some of the scrubbing was a little painful and the massage was mediocre. I wasn't asked if I wanted any designs on my toes. What was really gross was the HUGE cockroach scaling the wall right next to me. My nail tech noticed and told her co-worker in Vietnamese to kill it. Not joking...the lady came in with a broom and started whacking the heck out of it. She then looks at me and asks...oh you scared? and starts laughing. Wtf?! That was the only smile I got out of anyone while I was there. In the end, I'm skeptical about the cleanliness of this place because of the roach and my friend said none of the tools were in sanitation packs. She's a RN so she notices things like this. 1. Three of my toes were cut during my pedicure, one to the point of blood pooling and running down the side of my nail. 2. The pedicurist I had would not have acknowledged I was even cut if it weren't for the very obvious pooling of blood. 3. The acknowledgment came in the form of her squirting blue goo on my toe then constantly swiping my foot with a towel as though to prevent me from seeing the blood. 4. Her one comment was, "it's skin." As though cutting skin is ok. 5. At no point did she acknowledge her wrongdoing or apologize. My friend gave me a gift certificate for my birthday so I went in with her today to get a pedicure and ended up enduring this horrible experience for her sake. She has had success with her pedicurist and I didn't want to cause a scene that would make her feel uncomfortable in returning.
