I give this place 2 solid stars for the quick and friendly service. As for their sushi, I think it's overpriced for what you get. I'm assuming people who come here and rave about the sushi have never been to a real sushi joint. I open my to-go box and all I had to do was look at it and I could tell it was not fresh and my first bite confirmed it leaving a sour taste to my palette. Overall, I like this place. It's near my house, its not overly expensive, and the people that work there have always been nice. However, it's not a place you would expect a decent dining experience or take a date if you want to impress her. I have only ordered Sushi-rolls from the place, but the rest of the menu looks appetizing. I give it only 3 starts because I spend the same amount of money on sushi-rolls at places that are much better. This place (to me) is a bit pricey, considering its location, design, and interior seating furniture. I've been to Sushi places that are a lot nicer charge the same prices. But the quality of the sushi I get is quite decent (I get Unagi rolls, not raw fish rolls btw), so I can't complain too much. But the way it looks on the inside, in addition to its location, is the main reason I always get my order to go, and I don't order raw fish rolls. This place has really fresh-tasting sushi that is a good price. I got the Philly, Hawaiian, and Ginza rolls, and they were all really great. The Philly roll had the perfect portion of cream cheese and salmon - most creamy Philly roll I've had in my life! The Hawaiian roll and Ginza roll were both beautifully made, simple rolls where the flavor of fresh fish really came through. I've had a few other mid-tier sushi places in Pasadena, and this place really stands out in terms of freshness. The portions are good too, large rolls and generous amounts of fish. Rolls are at the perfect temp and don't need much sauce or anything because the flavors are already so good. I was really surprised because it's in such an unassuming location (in a small corner in the Food 4 Less shopping center) and it looked like the standard somewhat questionable teriyaki chicken bowl and broccoli type place. So haven't been back to this place in a long time and today i was on my way to China Express but found out as I got closer that they were closed. So went to Maki Yaki and got a chicken teriyaki bento to go. We stopped going to this place over 5 or 10 yrs ago coz it felt like they were cheating us on the amount of food. But today, I'm doubly surprised and not because i was starving. The food was super good. The soup was yummy and overall presentation which I think is important, was superb for a to go bento box. I love coming by here for a quick bite to eat when I am so tired of everything else on fast food row. If you are looking for some Japanese home cooking then this is the place to try. The couple who runs this place is absolutely adorable so it is always fun to come in and say hello. I was so unbelievably happy to learn that they sell ramune! I LOVE RAMUNE! Their prices recently went up.. WAYYYY UP. A decent place for quick sushi that was reasonably priced. Again, we go here because its so close to work and its pretty decent. The lady knows us becuase one girl at work has the same order, but its complicated so she's really friendly with us. A typical shusi place with mediocre rolls that satisfy the tummy when you're in a hurry and a penny pinch (or at least use to). The rolls aren't too crazy, and you have all your basis covered. You got your typical phidelphia roll, crunch roll, salmon skin roll, along with plenty other "typicals." The prices before were reasonable, but now they're a bit well, pricey. So we don't go here much often for work. Not really worth it for the money. Two stars becuase the service is always great and the food is consistent. read more

Beef bowl is so good... It is not the typical authentic japanese restaurant but quick to-go place. You can call them 15mins before and pick-up as soon as you arrive. Pricing is reasonable. I've been coming here since it opened and the quality is great and so is the service. Prices are perfect not to much not to little , I can't ever just go in for just one thing I always need at least 2 rolls , I usually spend a good 25 on myself and a friend for great amounts of food and it's so good! This place is tucked away in a corner of a HUGE plaza... I was attending a service a couple blocks away from this place, and a few of the members of our 17-person party found this place. The place is really small, so needless to say, we packed the place! I think the owner and the cook were surprised by the sudden wave of orders... The food is decent. My fiance & I have been eating the Maki Special A for under $8, at least once a week since we moved to the neighborhood 2 years ago. Such a great find for the time when we are starving for something savory, tender and delish within 10 mins. Also great for the last min decision not to cook, or a bit hungover...the salad greens make me feel healthy too. We walked into the tiny walk-up and order restaurant, complete with the huge pictures that I had always associated with lower-quality restaurants, but boy was I pleasantly surprised! Horrible horrible service. Doesn't make sense that they claim they close at 8:45pm but don't take orders after 7:50. After the lack of euthanasia and mad face the cashier gave me I should of left but she said I could only order certain things. Not only did I put up with the attitude and bizarre request; but I also got sick with what they gave me. I don't know if on purpose but with a variety of restaurants up and down the street it will not be difficult to find another place to eat. I suggest ownership take control of this establishment. They have really large portions! Their chicken teriyaki special comes with rice, salad, egg roll, and gyoza for only $5.95! I didn't try the sushi because I only come here for their hot food. The hubby got the special that came with 4 piece sushi and he said it was okay. I think that's really all you can ask for since they are so affordable! I saw some reviews said they were rude, but on the day I went everyone was very nice, which made the bargain even better!! If I order off the special menu, actually make an effort to cook it so I don't have to microwave my food as soon as I get home. If you're hungry, get a bento box- it could even be perfect to share. It comes with tons of food! I like the #26, chicken teriyaki. OK.. it comes with teriyaki chicken (obviously), rice, california roll (4pc), salad (boring with ginger dressing), rice, like 7 pieces of tempura and miso soup for around $13. They are super quick, the food comes out in 5 minutes. The place is clean and small with cute little paper laterns hung. It's a great quick lunch spot or dinner! The reason why I give a 4/5 is because of the customer service I received . When I called to place a phone order, I asked if there was anything similar to the California bowl (teriyaki chicken and 2 California rolls) as they no longer have it on the menu, the cashier who was on phone seemed like she was annoyed and actually did not help me with my request. I just wish she would have engaged more with me in finding a perfect dish for me. I ended up ordering the teriyaki bowl. When I arrive to the store, I see that they have all day specials that include teriyaki chicken, salad, egg roll, etc. for a cheaper price than the teriyaki chicken alone.
