Probably the worst sushi I've ever tasted so far. The rice for sushi should not be so mushy. Fish quality was just horrible.

I read the reviews and hoped the good reviews were valid but what we received was below HEB quality Sushi. The prices good but your getting below what you pay for considering your regular HEB Sushi is better. We ordered different rolls but they really tasted the same and one was salmon and the other tuna. The setup is king of strange. We felt like we were in a bar that just happened to have sushi that is not created by a bartender vs a sushi chef. When you go to a sushi bar you sit at the bar to get the better cuts of fish, talk to the sushi chef, see what is fresh, Since this is a bar you do not see anything being made and since it all tastes the same it is still a mystery when you taste it as well. I had to put 1 star but we wont be going back regardless of the cost. read more

This is some pretty darn yummy sushi and relatively cheap (less than $50 for two people) as far as it goes. We had a california roll and a few specialty rolls, plus miso soup and some nigiri. The specialty rolls were fantastic and the rest was fairly standard fare. The only thing I didn't like was the peppered tuna nigiri, because it was WAY too much pepper for my tastes. They are always friendly and attentive. While it's not upscale sushi, it's still tasty and decently priced. It's in my neighborhood, easy access and plenty of parking. It's tucked away so there is always seating. Go enjoy! read more

This is the worst sushi place ever the service is super slow don't go on your lunch hour because i waited almost two hours for two rolls and the place was empty. The sushi is tasteless. Instead of spicy mayo, they used ranch on a spicy crab salad? Who does that? It ruined the whole thing and the worst part there was three strands of hair inside of the sushi that is the most disgusting thing ever. I am never coming back to this place. read more

We came during the "Angry Hour". Other than one other couple the restaurant was empty during our entire one and a half hour visit. The Angry Hour prices were fantastic. The server was quick with our drinks, miso soup, and appetizers. There appeared to be only one sushi chef rolling - she did an incredible job. Disappointing experience. We sat at the counter and the counter surface was sticky. We ordered the combo F - 12 pieces of sashimi plus miso soup. The sashimi choice was decent, but the slices were very thin, not very generous. The ginger smelled and tasted weird, like it had gone bad. The hot green tea was served in cups with no handles or cozies so we had to wrap paper napkins around the cups to be able to lift the cups. The miso soup didn't arrive until 5 min after we had finished the sashimi. All the plates and bowls were plastic. Meh. Avoid unless you're really craving sushi and your car has broken down in front of the restaurant. read more

My search for a low carb lunch led me to Maki Toki. Sushi is fairly easy to handle with chopsticks. And for $10 , I had the Combo A, which included Miso soup, Cali roll and a vegetable roll. The first thing that impressed me was their organized wine list. I hope to be back for a Trivento Malbec and a meal that's lower in carbs than anything I have at home. read more

I'd say most of the reviews are spot on! We went there last night for the first time with a restaurant.com coupon - which made this value priced restaurant even more of a bargain! It's not the prettiest japanese restaurant we've ever been to, but the sushi was very good and the prices were amazing! Even the Sapporo beer was cheap! Our favorite item was the peppered tuna. We'll be back! I marked $$ as the price, but really, you could easily eat there for $10/person - especially for a lighter meal. read more

Do not get the shrimp tempura! Bento box-Unless you want to have grease running through your veins and all over your face/fingers. Service was slow but the waitress was very nice, white fin tuna had no flavor, salmon was great, small egg rolls were my favorite.All you can eat sushi included the whole menu great idea for 29.99-if you are very hungry.Chicken Yakitori looked and smelled wonderful but lacked any flavor what so ever. Love sushi..love cheap good sushi even more. Their quality is great...much better than grocery store/buffet sushi. Substantial amounts of seafood for the price of $5 for basic and $8 for fancier rolls. And I really appreciate that the spicy tuna is not minced tuna, but actual pieces. You get more than you pay for here. Very reasonable prices. I have called in orders for to-go for lunch about 3 times, and eaten dinner here about 8 times and each time is consistently good. The restaurant seems very, very clean to me. Fast service, nice waitstaff. Always fresh fish and good rolls. The location works great, it's nice to not have to go down south or pay a fortune when you've got a wasabi on salmon craving! I'd recommend, definitely. read more

Not impressed and in fact, feeling a lil sick after leaving this place. Maybe its just what we ordered but the fish just didn't seem fresh and had more tempura than meat. Definately don't order the egg rolls either. They were small and greasy and fried in crunchy white tempura with who knows what inside...yuck. I don't recommend it and won't be back. read more

This was the worst sushi i have ever had. I have had better sushi from supermarkets. The fish in the case was frozen in blocks. They advertise fresh fish and this couldn't have been further from it. WOW... Giving credit where credit is due. I ate at Maki Toki today, went in there around 1:00pm and had the "Made to Order, All you can eat." I am amazed. The hostess/Waitress. (I failed to catch her name, but I am assuming it was Kosi.) was very helpful with describing the different kinds of sushi, and the appetizers. I started with 8 Rolls of the Shiva, and 8 rolls of the 420. Great taste, fresh fish, the rice was cooked to perfection. All sixteen pieces were amazing. Next I ordered the Dia (which also happens to be the Fathers name in the kitchen, and the house special) which was amazing. Tagging along with the Dia was the Fatty. Melt in your mouth goodness. You see I am one of those over eaters, I have a little padding on me, I am not proud of it, but I am not going to let it effect my need for sushi. I was scared that my friend and I would be asked to leave. Were both overweight, and I am sure we put a dent in there daily profits. But It was amazing! After another sixteen rolls. I slowed down and decided it was time to try the Miso Soup. I've reviewed Miso soup on other websites and mentioned the taste of dirty dishwater. THIS WAS the best Miso soup I've had in Austin. Topped with Mushroom slices, it tasted amazing. I can't wait to stop back in and have another bowl. After the soup I decided to try the Fish Taco's that were praised about in an earlier review. Again, the tangy and spicy mix was perfect. If I would have changed one thing, I would have only wanted one piece of fish in the taco, instead of two. It was pretty filling, especially after thirty two pieces of sushi, and a bowl of soup. So that now brings me to the last thing ordered. Already almost full, I made the mistake of ordering the Bento Box, Chicken. Now I say mistake. The only mistake was that I was already getting full. The rice was great, the small egg rolls were nice and flaky. The Chicken Kutsu was good. It looked like an entire chicken breast battered lightly, in Tempera. All in all it was a great experience. My friend and I had lunch, and paid a total of $59.00 tax/tip included. After looking at what we would have paid and calculated the total, it came to $53.00 each. so $106.00 total. Went on a lunch break with a co worker and waited almost 20 minutes for our sushi. There was only 1 person making rolls but many people in the back. Ordered 2 rolls and a soda and spent $25 definitely not worth it or lunch specials. Co worker actually spit some of her food out. Wouldn't recommend if on a budget on in a hurry. read more

FAIL Maki Toki is enjoying the traffic that restaurant.com coupons brings - but not honoring the coupon. Supposedly they stopped accepting these coupons as of 9/1/10 - but you may still buy them at restaurant.com as of today 9/17/10! Strange! I'm sure their is a reason that they have stopped participating with restaurants.com, however there are only two categories of failing to have your restaurant de-listed from the website, accident or on purpose. If you claim it was an accident, and then you fail to honor the coupon, you don't care for your customers. If it was on purpose, then you are knowingly participating in fraudulent mis-representation. In either of these cases, even if it was (it wasn't) the best sushi in town, I would not return due to this. Because it is only average food AND you either have no customer service OR are willing to participate in outright fraudulent marketing tactics - I both won't return AND I'll spend my time Yelping about it too. read more

This is my favorite sushi place. It's local and everything is delicious. We had the dumpling appetizer to start and it did not disappoint! We had the crunchy shrimp roll, Philadelphia roll and the dynamite as a hand roll and they were all amazing. The hand rolls are very flavorful and a must-try! To finish we had the strawberry and mango mochi. SO YUMMY! The mochi was cut in half so it was easy to share. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful with her suggestions. She was very attentive and passionate about this family-owned restaurant. I love this place and will keep coming back as often as I can. read more

I love this place! The first time I went here I thought that there is no way that they can have good sushi. However, I keep on coming back for more. Yes they may never be busy but they do have awesome sushi for a great price. I feel like I am at home when I walk in. They always remember me even after not coming in a couple of months. I thought the female server was extremely nice and very attentive however the sushi was mediocre at best. The roll completely fell apart and practically crumbled at the touch. My aunt and I had just finished getting a massage north Austin area we where quite hungry. We decided to try this placed based on the reviews and proximity to where we were at. We should have known better not to try a place with all you can eat sushi for $25.95. We had some edamame and shrimp tempura for appetizer then we ordered the pita roll, 9-1-1 roll, crunchy shrimp, call it like it hot (I think that was the name) we also had 2 miso soups each. We should have left and stopped eating after my aunt pointed out that her tuna on the roll didn't taste fresh. I was tryin to give it the benefit of the doubt but after about and hour or so after eating. We were about to leave the restaurant but something didn't feel right. I had to run into the restaurant to use the bathroom everything I had just eaten came right out! It was probably days old seafood they were using for the all you can eat menu. For the price, I wouldn't come back. The nigiri was not fresh, and quite a few of the rolls on the menu are hot (as in they are cooked in one way or another). Those two things make me think they are just buying the cheapest fish they can. My taste buds will back me up on this one. read more

This is a place I frequent for "Angry Hour". The prices are great at this time and the sushi is always fresh and really good! A bottle of Bud Light is $1.50 and the sushi averages $4. The ONLY reason I gave it a 4 star is due to the time. You can't be in a hurry here. I have been here 5 or 6 times and it is always slow. Often times, they serve you and can disappear for a few minutes when you are looking to order something again. We love coming here! Every Wednesday, my fiancee and I have "date night" at this location. It's intimate with good music always playing. The service is personal and fantastic. The sushi is pretty good, and you can't beat all you can eat either! My issue came up with the service speed. I was in a group of four, and there were seven other people in the restaurant. To get our fill of food, it took 3 HOURS. The Nigiri Sushi was cold, like they just pulled it out of the fridge, but the Explosion roll was PHENOMENAL. Went today (Sunday) at 4:30, right when they opened. Our waitress seemed overly mellow or something. She just moved slowly and had a weird smile on her face. The food was ok. My husband and I both got a bento box - beef and chicken, grilled. We both thought the meat had a good flavor, but was dry and overcooked. The egg roll that came with it was good. Whereas another place we like that has bento boxes leaves you overly stuffed with food, this one seemed sparse even on the tray/box. It is definitely a light meal. Was eating dinner here and a crazy looking bug crawled right above my food on the bar and when I told the server she smushed it with a napkin, apologized, and went to run my credit card. Didn't clean up after the bug where people after me will eat and didn't offer to comp any of my bill. read more

My boyfriend and I love this place. It is owned by a very sweet family that we get to learn a little more about every time we go. The best time to go is during their Angry Hour! ...Meh. TL; DR: Mediocre. Awkward. Over-priced. I've been here a few times because the Sushi Angry Hour is inexpensive if you're craving sushi. If you're not super picky and you're not paying full price, there are some things on the menu worth getting. Menu: Lots of fried shrimp. Some weird American-Japanese hybrid sushi rolls. I've had the Spider, Scuba, Jade, Manny, California rolls, miso soup, and egg rolls, and nigiri. The peppered tuna nigiri is good, but the salmon is subpar. Sometimes the fish they use seems like it's been refrigerated for a while. I feel like if they pared down the menu to things they could really master, the food's quality would improve. I've had better sushi from the kiosks at grocery stores. The last time I went, I ordered the tiny, fried egg rolls, which can be delicious, but one of them had what looked like a small clump of flattened hair fried to it. The server here is a bit prim and chilly so I didn't even bother mentioning it, which leads me to the next issue I have with this place. (As an aside, another gross thing happened -- when I went into the bathroom, the toilet paper roll wasn't inside of the holder, it was sitting on the rail. I picked it up and noticed there was a brown poop-smear on the side of it.) The service and atmosphere are just.. awkward. The restaurant's aesthetic needs some help; it's dark but it's been painted with blue, orange, and yellow, the bar takes up more than half of the restaurant, and the other half is monopolized by three gigantic booths. You're pretty much right up in the servers business, and they're right up in yours. It's one of those places where you feel like everyone is listening to you when you talk. They also play horribly trendy pop music -- the same easy listening radio station rotating through the top 40 and some 90's pop "classics" that they play in department stores. Like everyone else has mentioned, the speed of service is problematic. The rolls take, on average, 15-30 minutes to come out even when you're the only person in the restaurant. If the place had better ambiance and the food was higher quality, I wouldn't mind the wait. My recommendation is to skip this place unless you're looking for a fix during angry hour. Maki Toki is to sushi as Taco Cabana is to Tex-Mex. You don't walk out feeling very satisfied with the experience. read more

A buddy at work suggested this place since I was craving sushi. I went around 1, the lunch rush had already died off, so it was nice and quiet. I had a California, Shrimp Tempura, and Philly Roll, spent $19 which is more than I'm willing to spend at lunch, but things happen. The waitress was very nice and helpful.
