Horrible! Seriously, honestly and truly. I was sad to see the location on 116th leave because they were much more professional. So I thought I'd try the location on 139th & Adam Clayton Powell. This cake was for my son's 6th birthday and I was charged $98 for a 10' round. It looks horrible. The decorations are very amateur, it looks like a home economics project. They even managed to spell my son's name wrong. How do you spell Christopher wrong??? The picture they used for the astronaut had air bubbles in it and the font of the Happy Birthday... was all written horribly. I will never again patronage this place after this experience. I used to patronize make my cake years ago in their Harlem location. Had an initial great experience having a custom Birthday cake made for my mother's 62nd birthday. Fast forward a few years and their quality and customer service dropped. I decide to give them another try for a custom birthday cake and go to their new location 775 Columbus Ave. Big disappointment! I ask the Sales woman present about placing a custom cake order for this weekend. I ask if they can make a 10 inch 4 layer cake? She says no. I say do you mean I'd have to buy 2 separate cakes? She replies yes. I say okay can I get two different fillings? She says No. Only what they have in their display case. I didn't even bother to ask about cake decorations at this point. I turn to leave and she then says what kind of filling? I reply what does it matter? You just told me you can't do it. Foolish sales woman I had a budget of $250- $300 to spend for the custom cake. My advice to would custom cake seekers this place ain't it. Go where they actually value customers and attempt to accommodate them. Customer service was extremely disappointing. I called to make an order for a cake & cupcakes and the phone operator was not warm and was extremely rude after taking my order. She mentioned she would text a receipt and abruptly hung up the phone without any type of farewell. When I called back to ask if that was a mistake, she rudely mentioned she was going to send a text. I ordered 24 cupcakes for a friend's 30th birthday party the week prior to the party. I currently reside in DC so I placed the order over the phone. when I placed my order with the lady (I believe her name is Kelly) she was not only abrupt but she made me feel like I had very limited options in my request. I told her this was for a special occasion and that I wanted the cupcakes to reflect my appreciation for the birthday girl. I asked for custom assorted cupcakes with the inscription "Shavon's 30th". I was told that the cupcakes were too small for that writing. Although I was disappointed I said ok and she assured me that she would personally make sure the cupcakes came out "fabulous". What I received instead was atrocious. Not only did they look ugly but they were not at all a reflection of the Make My Cake establishment I've patronized for years. There was no assortment at all. It appeared there were more yellow "traditional cupcakes" than any other. I asked for more red velvet cupcakes and received only 4. 12 of the 24 cupcakes were literally only black and white. Further the cupcakes looked like a child wrote on them instead of a master baker/pastry chef. For that to be 85 dollars is not acceptable. I was told to go to Georgetown Cupcakes (DC), Magnolia Bakery, Baked by Melissa, Crumbs, or Sprinkles and instead I chose Make My Cake because of my loyalty and because they are a black owned business. Further after reaching out to the Make My Cake staff a young man jerrell (whom was really nice i will say) said that my complaint would be forwarded to the current owner Aaliyah along with an email I sent. So my hubby discovered this place on his way home one day. Then around the holidays he dropped in and bought a red velvet holiday cake. This was the beginning of my romance with this place. I went to Make My Cake because it was the only cake spot available during this time (COV- 19). When I first walked in the employees were not as friendly/ accommodating. I was trying to get information on birthday cakes but they did not have the best attitude. I order their red velvet cake that was $55! I thought I would be getting a great cake for it's expensive price. I was very wrong! They were able to decorate the outside with icing and glitter but it was still a SHITTY cake. Another little gem in harlem. The minute you walk in it's like how you would have imagined the smell of Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. I usually get the cakes or cupcakes with butter cream. Today I got the French toast cupcake and a red velvet with vanilla cream for my princess. Pricing is good and staff is always a pleasure. The cookies are also awesome. I'm writing this review in the midst of a sugar high! I rarely ever make trips to Harlem, but in the past few months every time I came it was to get some baked goodies from This shop. I always grab a slice of cake- either the vanilla buttercream or the devil's food cake slice. Both disgustingly heavenly. I can say I have never, ever tasted devil's food cake so sweet. Usually the places I've ate devil's food cake at, the cake itself is a bit dry with little taste and most of the sweet is in the frosting. Not here. Cake sweet- Frosting sweet. I will return, diet be damned. I have never had an issue with the service at all...I ask for what I want, pay and head home. The worse part for me are those long blocks to the train station and the subway ride to Brooklyn. I want to taste the cake immediately but I wait until I get home! The other bakery at 116th is much closer to the C train, but I spoke to someone who eats at both places. She told me that she prefers this one, and noticed their sweets taste a bit better. I've only been there once, and it was a while ago so I can't corroborate that, but I wanted to put it out there. I haven't tried their cupcakes, and probably won't since Crumbs has my heart in Manhattan. The huge slices of cake are more than enough, even for a greedy sucker like myself. This is my usual cake spot. Yesterday was my sons birthday and i got him a cup cake arrangement in the shape of a number 2. When i received the cake (my boyfriend picked up the cup cakes ) it definitely wasn't a 2 . We couldn't tell want it was. So me and my mother had to take most of them off to try and make it a two. Which then messed up the writing on the board at the bottom. For me to pay $108 for this isn't okay. The buttercream was really think and sugary not how it used to be. I ordered a birthday cake for my daughter's 16th Birthday. I asked for a simple vanilla cake with white buttercream frosting, some pastel colored flowers, and chocolate inscription. Nothing complicated. I would have given 5 stars if the review was based on the staff who was friendly, attentive, and professional. Unfortunately, the cake itself was a disaster. First of all, it looked nothing like what I had ordered. The frosting was fondant and not buttercream, the background was purple and not white, and the inscription was not chocolate but pink. I would not have complained about that, had the cake itself been a success. The fondant on the cake was melted, the cake had collapsed on one side, the tiers had separated. It was a disappointing mess. I called the bakery immediately and the woman who answered the phone was apologetic and said that the cake was probably too hot when they put the frosting on and that should not have happened. I needed a cake for my son's birthday and was able to call ahead the day before and learned they have a few premade cakes available for walk-ins that they will hold for a short time. I rushed over to pick up the cake and I was in luck that they held on to it for me. It was a pleasant surprise that they would even put some custom frosting on the pre-made cake. They wrote a nice happy birthday message and a cute Thomas the train theme for a two-year-old. I really appreciated the personalized customer service. First time visit, but won't be the last. The inside was super cute. The decor gave it a nice ambiance and if I had time I would've sat down to enjoy my treats. I had a Slice of Red Velvet and a coconut pecan cookie (per the cashier's request). The cake was super moist. Can't quite say it was the best I've had but I'd rank it in the top 5 (I've had plenty of red velvets in my life). I highly recommend getting the coconut pecan cookie. It was so good and I appreciated the fact that there was real coconut in it. All in all great sweet treats, friendly service and awesome decor...
