I was disappointed with my experience at Maison Close. The food was overpriced and mediocre. Nothing we ordered stood out or justified the high prices. What bothered me the most, however, was how the restaurant handled the water service. At the beginning of the meal, the server asked, "Still or sparkling?" without mentioning that the water was bottled and would be charged. I assumed it was complimentary table water. Fine--I accepted paying for the first bottle. But after that, they kept opening and serving new bottles without ever asking us or getting our consent. We weren't told they were replacing the bottle, nor were we given the option to decline. By the end of the meal, we had been charged an extra $40+ just for water. This is not the right way to do business. If customers are going to be charged for additional bottles, they should be informed and asked before each new bottle is opened. I am so disappointed to have to leave this review because this place was very fun. I have been in touch with Kat (who was fabulous) via email to plan a dinner for my mom's 60th birthday with her 4 best friends of over 45 years. My first disappointment was when I tried to order a cake on Wednesday morning for Friday evenings reservation. The website states 48 hours notice is needed (see photo). Kat unfortunately let me know they needed 72 hours. But assured me some of the desserts were gluten free (the waiter was unaware of any gluten free cakes when I asked). I also let Kat know we were going to be ordering caviar and one of the bottles of champagne if she could make sure they had it available. We arrived to Maison close at 10:19 for our 10:00 reservation. The maitre D told me they had a 15 minute grace period and that our table was given away. I was understandably furious as I had 6 other women who came to the city from an hour plus away and were told there was no table. four minutes is how long we missed the window, and I did not receive a call or a text. They were rude, and said "it's very clear on their policy" on the website. After speaking with the manager who was lovely, I explained they had made custom menus for us and we had requested a few things for the night. Luckily the manager was able to do something after I spoke with her. We had a minimum of $250 per person to spend (which is standard at Maison close). In the time we sat at our table (10:30 pm- 1:30 am) we had only TWO rounds of drinks. That is how horrific the service was. At one point I had been waiting so long for a service member to order the 2nd round of drinks that I had to go back to the manager to ask her to put a few more drinks in for us (she graciously was the one who brought them over as well). When I had asked one of the waitresses about ordering the bottle of champagne I had emailed about with Kat, the waitress tried to convince me to purchase a more expensive bottle and told me she would give me a "deal." I said no thank you I just wanted the original I had ordered. She said ok, and we never received that bottle of champagne we had ordered. At the end of the night around 1:30am I asked for the check. The waiter (I believe his name was Red). Told me we still had $500 more to spend. It was too late and none of my moms friends wanted to drink more. So I said "I'm not sure what to do. I guess we will just eat the cost." I wish the waiter had suggested we buy merchandise to take home (which I saw as we were on our way to the bathroom before leaving). So that was $500 down the drain. About 2 minutes after signing the bill (where we forewent $500) I asked Red if we could just get 2 more drinks for my cousin and her friend. He rolled his eyes and gave my mom attitude about it, explaining we had already checked out. However they did eventually get the drinks after going back and fourth. I am very disappointed to have to leave this review, because it was very fun with dancing on the tables, and the entertainment is fabulous. The only reason this place is not getting 1 star is because of the manager who several times had to save the day for the unimpressive staff at Maison close. Terribly disappointed. Without mentioning the exorbitant prices, let's focus on what we come to a French restaurant for: local, high-quality, fresh products cooked to perfection. We started with the Burgundy snails (escargots à la Bourguignonne): a tomato sauce that was way too liquid, with an abundance of sage and rosemary that altered the taste of the snails, when a good garlic and parsley butter makes all the difference--which is what we expected when reading "à la Bourguignonne." In trying too hard to innovate, a chef can quickly forget his fundamentals, which are nevertheless the very reason for gastronomy's existence. Same remark for the next dish: the frog legs. The sauce served on the side is a derivative of the snails' sauce. The frog legs were barely cooked, and still no garlic and parsley butter! The sole (priced at $95) was from frozen, whereas at this price one would expect a fresh product. The filet mignon was okay, but served with soggy fries that had been sitting out too long. The creamed spinach is worthy of a Sunday night meal reheated in the microwave: frozen spinach, haphazardly thrown into an ultra-liquid yellow sauce... barely set on the table, and immediately taken away. There is no dining minimum for brunch or reservations before 10 pm but any reservation past 10 pm has a dining minimum per person and the exact amount depends on how large your party is. Just know if you have a 10 pm reservation and get there at 10 pm, you most likely will not be seated for another 20-30 minutes because the before 10 pm reservations are wrapping up. The atmosphere is loud, lively, and the staff are attentive. The music is electronic party music. We heard one afrobeats song that was edited into the electronic vibe, so that was cool. But overall we really did have a fun time. If you come here, be ready to dance! The gnocchi, lamb chops, and chicken were delicious. The truffle pasta was average and the filet was a tad bit overcooked but not bad. First time trying beef tartare and I thought it was okay. The cocktail shrimp was bland. The prices are definitely on the higher side, but you're paying for the atmosphere and live performances rather than just the food. For appetizers, we had the ahi tuna, beef tartare, Maine lobster salad, escargot, and oysters. The ahi tuna and escargot were the highlights. For entrees, we tried the truffle pasta, ribeye, and French toast--all were good but didn't quite justify the price. I came here for a birthday dinner at 10. Immediately upon entering the spot was super vibey. People were super dressed up and the spot was really packed. There was loud music and it seemed like overall a great time. However, the host had told us all to rise within 15 minutes otherwise our table might be given away. To maximize your experience I would suggest you come with a group for a later reservation (for the burlesque show). After a certain time you have a minimum spend requirement. For our group of 3 there was a $150 minimum spend per person. If I came here alone and only ordered 1-2 items off the menu it could easily feel like my money isn't well spent because each item can be quite expensive and the portion sizes are on the smaller side. With a group and minimum spend you get to try a good range of items on the menu and get to experience the restaurant. We found it not too difficult to reach the spend minimum as we ordered 2 drinks per person, some appetizers to share, and our entrees. Our bill was about $220 per person at the end of the night (not including tip) Like I mentioned the portion sizes were small so there wasn't any food leftover to possibly take home. So keep that in mind if you're super hungry. The hostess and people standing by the door weren't too friendly when we walked up to the restaurant. Not a great first impression because they didn't really greet us they're just asking if you have a reservation like it's an exclusive club... However, the waiter and the bartenders were extremely nice and made our experience pleasant. As far as the food I highly recommend the lamb chops, truffle pasta, and escargot. I'm still thinking about the pasta! I ordered a lychee martini which was really good. And the pornstar martini was truly the highlight of my night!!! The show was short and decently entertaining, but it definitely changed the vibe of the restaurant and gave it more a of party vibe, making it a good place to start before your night out on the town. The concept of this place is great, but I fear the execution is a let down. For the prices being paid, the service is subpar. Our waitress was quite M.I.A. and often forgot to put in our drink orders. Because of the LOUD music, we could also barely hear each other. There's loads of restaurants in the city that turn into a club/bar late nights and now I understand why they have a cut off time for a sit down dinner because the combination of the two does not work as effectively as I'd hope. Maybe I was already in a sour mood because of everything else, but I think I could acknowledge if the wait was worth it (did I mention we made a reservation and were only seated about 40 minutes later?) A friend and I split the whole roast chicken (+$100 for roasted chicken is crazy work) and I will admit I dogged it, but mostly because it was 11pm and I was HUNGRY. Fries were alright. Sauce could have been more exciting. I did also put in an order for a side of seasonal vegetables which, surprise surprise, the waitress didn't even put in. We did also get the lemon meringue tart which was a lot more pastry than filling. It was fine, not great either. This isn't hospitality, it's laziness. Canceling on a large party so abruptly shows they don't value their guests or know how to handle serious reservations. If you want to gamble on your plans being tossed aside last minute, book here. Otherwise, save yourself the frustration and choose a restaurant that actually respects its customers. Both dishes were yummy and the filet mignon with fries was filling. My friend and I shared a bottle of champagne for mimosas. Our server was attentive and friendly. Eventually we had to leave our table since they had other reservations and we found out that the show starts around 3:30pm so I highly recommend making a late reservation when you go. The service is IMPECCABLE. The waiters are fun, attentive, caring and invested in everyone having a great time. I mean they even would bring our drinks and phones to us if we were dancing. For food we had the beets salad, French toast, linguini with truffle, tuna tartare- best I've ever had, steak and fries. Everything was absolutely delicious. We were disappointed because we wanted to order the croissant with lobster and they were out of it. For drinks I highly recommend the pornstar martini - passion fruit and comes with a shot of champagne- delicious- everyone at our table ended up ordering it. Ended our dinner with a cappuccino that was really good as well! Overall food and service were top notch. Except!!! We were a party of 5 women and even with all the food we ordered and everyone having 2-3 drinks each we didn't meet their requirements of $1,000 spending limit. We spoke to the manager and explained that we were told that the $1,000 minimum was for a party of 6 or more - we were a party of 5. She said "oh ok" left and then returned saying "no you have to spend $1,000" - we were given the bill and they charged us the $244 that we were short on spending. I was beside myself. By far one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had in NYC -- and especially disappointing for what was meant to be a special birthday celebration for my wife. From the moment we sat down, everything felt rushed and disorganized. The service was not just inattentive -- it was outright disrespectful. Instead of enjoying a relaxed celebration, we felt like we were being timed and pushed out the door. The food was equally underwhelming. Dishes came out carelessly prepared and completely lacking flavor. At one point, our waiter removed our steak and chicken plates before we were finished, insisting we had eaten enough -- despite the fact that the steak dish was clearly still half full. Watching our food be taken away prematurely was both frustrating and unacceptable. To make matters worse, we waited nearly 30 minutes for our drinks. Yet the moment the cocktails finally arrived, we were urged to finish them quickly because of the same two-hour limit. The experience felt contradictory and chaotic -- slow when it came to service, but aggressive when it came to rushing us out. We also ordered three different desserts to celebrate the birthday -- only one ever made it to the table. No explanation, no apology, just more poor service.
