This place is insane in the membrane. Coming from Singapore, I know my Southeast Asian food . For appetisers, we had Vietnamese spring rolls, fried egg rolls and stuffed chicken wings. They were all crazy good, especially the stuffed wings. For entrees, we had basil fried rice and green curry . The green curry wasn't too sweet or salty like the other Thai places, which was refreshing. The basil fried rice was mind blowing. Definitely recommend getting the fried rice here. We also had Thai iced tea which was good as usual. As we were leaving, we got an egg roll to go and the owner gave us one more on the house. How good is this place? The prices are reasonable and the portions are large. The fried rice was comparable to fried rice that we have had in SE Asia. We had the vegetable stir-fry and appreciated that they were not mushy, but still crisp. We will return there when we are next in Appleton. read more

Bizarre Spectacular Hole-in-the-wall Food. Being from a land of glorious culinary revelations I came to Wisconsin to eat German Food, Miscellaneous other sausages, Cheese and drink beer. I was exceptionally skeptical when my family mentioned stuffed chicken wings. The translucent egg rolls were excellent. I've had these at a variety of thai restaurants and these were amongst the best of them. The stuffed chicken, on the other hand, was magically delicious. It was a little bizarre to find noodles inside the chicken, like some sort of Eastern Cordon Bleu, but it added to this moist breaded goodness and when covered with the standard exceptional asian sauces: Gosh Darn. The decor was meh but who cares? Great inspired fusion food. Also: apparently the Pho is quite good here. Pho in Wisconsin! Bizarre. I will eat this every time I am in town. read more

I'm so glad I've found this place, seriously. I love Thai and Viet food compared to greasy Chinese. I don't cook ever and I stay up here for work, so finding a good place to go regular was important to me. I've tried most of the things. I think the food is very clean and healthy. Presentation is good. I was kind of scared to try the stuff chicken but after trying it. I'm hooked! it's sooooo delicious make me think of my dad because it taste like something he made before. They make bomb curry so try all. Everyone makes the pho broth different their is okay for me, I get it once in a while. I'm a picky eater, if I had a bad first time i would never come back but Mias have not disappointed me. Parking is limited, might have to park in the back but who cares, is only like 3 min walk. I like the place because is simple and clean. It doesn't have all those crap having on the walls like those fat smiling Chinese baby calendar you see at the Chinese restaurants. I go to places to enjoy the food and relax not to see nonsense on the walls. But I like Mias and so happy is close by my place. :) They do a great job at serving and have good customer service. When you drive up to Mai's, the first clue of what you're in for isn't in the building's unassuming exterior. It's in the total lack of parking - we had to circle the block twice to find a nearby spot, and it wasn't all that nearby. The interior is unassuming, too. There are a few simple tables, if you're lucky enough to get one, where you can enjoy your meal after you order it from the counter. Or, if you prefer takeout, you can sit on a small bench and wait for your food. The lone menu is posted on the wall, and it's not extensive, but it doesn't need to be. Mai's does only a few things - egg rolls, noodle dishes like pad Thai, and various curries - but does them all quite well. We opted for takeout, and selected a yellow curry with pork and a red curry with chicken. The red curry was my favorite, nicely spicy and heavily seasoned with fresh basil - delicious. Our appetizers were egg rolls, which I wasn't too excited about, and some unusual stuffed chicken wings, which is Mai's specialty and rightfully so, as they are tasty and original. If you don't need things fancy, but just want them delicious, Mai's is a good choice - just leave some extra time to park. read more

Been ordering from them for five years. I like there food but it has been increasingly to call in an order. Their phone service half the time is no one answering when they open or an answering machine.. just weird and frustrating. This is the fourth Saturday eve at 5 pm where I give up after 45 mins to place an order (it is 5:15 pm) that I resort back to ordering sushi from a restaurant who answers their phone. read more

Fantastic food! It's as authentic as you can get in WI, by a long shot. It even holds up against what I was used to in SF and LA. Their red curry is delicious, I do wish it had more bamboo shoots, but that's a personal preference. If you order Pad Siew ("see you"), make sure it's the Thai Pad Siew, it has the right broccoli in it. If you usually douse yours in Sriarcha, you can skip the sauce if you order it "spicy." Be prepared, they don't whitewash the spice (which is AWESOME). Theire fresh spring rolls are fantastic, the pad thai is yummy and their egg rolls are some of the best I've had since leaving California. They use real sweet and sour (not the food-dye bs) and they have free refills on their Thai iced tea (which helps with the spice if you go yhat route). You can order anything as not spicy or you can specify the level of spice. The best and most authentic places are usually the hole in wall types, so don't let the exterior fool you, this is definitely worth trying! read more

My fiancé and I have been craving Thai food!! We both saw the reviews on yelp and decided to give this place a try!! We are both chefs so no pressure plus my fiancé is Thai and I work at a Thai restaurant. When we first got here we were not expecting a hole in the wall type of restaurant but we love these types!! Anyways to the food! Pork egg rolls are excellent! Nice crispy exterior, glass noodles inside, with a good ratio of pork. Next was the stuffed chicken wings! They know how to get the skin nice and crispy! After the appetizers we decided to get a bowl of pho which was decent here. The main things we want to rave about are the Thai Pad See Ew and the Ka Pow beef!! We ordered the pad see Ew medium spicy and the ka pow HOT!! You gotta order it spicy!! Be brave! I'm just now writing this review but we have been here three times already =p The food is excellent here!! And it's the closest Thai food you can get!! Enjoy everybody!! read more

Desperate to find a somewhat authentic ethnic place in the Fox Valley, we decided on Mai's, in part, because of the good reviews. Have to say this place didn't disappoint. The fresh vegetarian spring rolls are almost double the size I am used to. They contained very fresh lettuce and herbs and carrots and the dipping sauce wasn't too sweet. The stuffed chicken wing appetizer ($2.50 each) was a pleasant surprise of noodles, veggies and spice that was grilled vs deep fried, making it crispy, but not greasy. The traditional beef Pho had large pieces of beef and beef meatballs that were very soft and tender. Best of all was the broth, which had a perfect mix of coriander, perhaps anise, ginger and a mix of other spices. A must try! The Pad Thai was a bit sweet for my taste. I think what makes an authentic pad Thai tasty the perfect blend of sweet and spicy and this was a little too sweet with a tad too much sauce. I call it "pad Thai for the masses" as it is inoffensive to the palate, but a tad less authentic. Some crazy person me tend in a review that the portions were small. Holy sh*t are they large (unless you eat baby gorillas for breakfast). My husband and I took home leftover for an entire meal. O! M! G! Seriously THE BEST THAI in Appleton, and more likely in WI- period. I've been spoiled by living in LA and Vegas, and Mei's is better than most big city Thai. Their pad thai is ah-mazing!! Spring rolls are awesome, and the egg rolls are to die for!! This will be the only place I go for thai from here on out. Dont waste your time going to other "thai' places in the area-- Not only are they not authentic, they are just plain not good!!! Mei's is family owned and run, everything was literally cut and cooked to order! Oh and definately get e thai tea to accompany your meal!!! So glad I finally found real thai food!!! Ordered stuffed chicken wings (never had it and it tasted good but as if it had been sitting out for a little while). Crab rangoon, nothing special, pretty greasy. The udon noodles with green beans and beef had a little kick to it, it was good! The basil fried rice with chicken was really good. So glad to have found this place. When you see the location and the inside, you might lower your expectations and wonder how this place is so highly rated. After you realize this is a small, family ran shop, it makes sense they're not pouring money into presentation. And after your first bite into their stuffed chicken wings, you'll forget where you're eating because your mind was just blown into another dimension. My go to entree is the regular pho, and they do it well. The meat is rarely fatty or chewy, and goes well with their flavorful broth. I've seen people order all different types of dishes, so it's hard to imagine anything being a bad choice to try. The thing that keeps us going back is their stuffed chicken wing. It's simply a chicken wing that has been deboned and stuffed with bean threads and who knows what else. When I first heard about it, I was more confused than interested. After that first bite though, you'll understand how this place went from farmers market booth to the constant flow of customers getting take out while you eat. Appleton has some fancy, flavorful fare that makes you forget you're in Northern Wisconsin. Mai's Deli won't put you somewhere else, but rather, it will make you happy you're exactly where you're at and wondering if you should get a chicken wing to go or just come back tomorrow. read more

A true breath of fresh air. Mai's is a tiny place with only 7 tables. The look is nothing special but the food is made fresh and tastes wonderful. Had the stuffed chicken wing which is a very unique appetizer not found many places. It is deboned and stuffed with rice noodles and shredded vegetables. It is nicely seasoned. The Pad See Ew was very good. Could use a few more bean sprouts but very close to perfect. Service was very good. I will be back again soon read more

it's April. and I'm in a town near Appleton for my last rotation before I graduate. Their signature item is Stuffed Chicken Legs.. so I got one to test it out. Chicken leg was stuffed with thin vermicelli noodles (crystal clear kind)/carrots, chicken leg seasoned well and grilled. Meat was tender and came off easy. It was alright. I wasn't blown away by it. I also had chicken egg rolls! I'm a sucker for fried egg rolls especially if they are fried in spring roll wraps! and it was a cheat day for me so I decided to go with 2 chicken egg rolls! just the right amount of crisp, no extra frying oil, stuffing was hot, dipping sauce was zesty sweet which made it perfect! I left tempted to get a whole dozen home! but they taste the best when they are freshly out of fryer! Then I had pho. I mean you have to have pho on a wintry cold day. I thought the broth was great! It was the right amount of saltiness and I can tell it's real broth soup because I didn't have the water cravings like I did when i had broth from soup packets. The content on the other hand.. there are beef slices and sliced meatball. meatball was not chewy/elastic, meat was alright. I wish they had tripes or flanks added in like other pho places! but for $7 you can't really complain.. In term of dinning environment, it's your mom and pop restaurant. There are about 5 small tables and 3 bigger tables in the dinning area. Decoration/ambiance is lacking. Staff are friendly though! Oh on a small note, I don't think there is sufficient parking on site. only 2 parking spots in the front. Overall, if I am in Appleton again, I would totally go here and get my dozen chicken egg rolls! read more

We were really looking forward to the stuffed chicken wings but, were told it would take 30 min so we passed (we were starving haha) an settled for a Regular Pho and the Butternut Squash Curry with Chicken. I am very picky about Pho but the broth here was very tasty. The curry was out of this world good, and now has a special place in my heart. We were traveling through Oskosh and decided to give Mai's a try based on the reviews. We both had Pad Thai, one with tofu and the other with shrimp. Both were good, although slightly more sticky than I'm used to eating in NY or Chicago. Also, the tofu was not the extra firm tofu that has such a nice chew to it when added to Pad Thai. This was firm tofu cut into fairly large cubes. The flavor was fine, but it changed the texture of the Pad Thai from what I've come to expect. We were anxious to try the stuffed chicken wings, but none were ready and we were told it would take 1/2 hour to prepare. I guess I don't understand how a "signature dish" isn't ready for customers at dinner time. Our server, the woman behind the cash register, was very polite and delivered friendly, excellent service, always with a smile, even when she had to make excuses for the stuffed chicken wings and the wireless (see below.) There is no alcohol whatsoever. No beer, domestic or oriental, which is always such a nice accompaniment to Thai food. We were stuck having a soda, but there were no straws available without asking the server. Since we were eating in, I'm surprised she didn't offer us glasses and ice for our drinks, but no straws without asking? Really? The restaurant has wireless, but no one knew the password. They gave me three possibilities, none of which worked. According to the server, "the person who knows it" wasn't there and no one else knew what it was. So what's the point of having this great customer amenity if the information isn't disseminated to the employees, especially a server??!! Anyway, what we had was good, not great, and we had no chance to try their much-touted stuffed chicken wings. I would've also liked to at least have had a beer with dinner and taken advantage of the wireless service, which was there for customer use, but no one knew the password. This is a cute place with decent food, but some attention to detail would have made our experience a lot better! read more

I learned about Mai's Deli a couple months ago and I can't get enough! I've only tried two things, which is unusual for me, but I just love the Basil Fried Rice with Tofu so much that I don't even want to try anything else yet! The fresh basil is amazingly fragrant and delicious in this dish and the tofu is always cooked perfectly. The other item I tried was the spring rolls, which were very fresh and had a delicious sauce with them. The restaurant is small and bare-bones with a horrible parking situation. I would love to see them move to a bigger building and put some attention on the atmosphere and ambience. However, if they did that they would probably raise the prices and have a wait time at every meal so maybe this is best! read more

The food here is great. I'm so happy I found this place in appleton. Coming to Wisconsin, I was afraid I was going to miss asian food but this restaurant has been a great find. I've had pho and squash curry in two different ocassions and the flavors are just great. I can't finish their curry in one seating but it still tastes great reheated the next day. Just a heads up. This week I was craving for some stuffed chicken wings and there's only one place in the area that I go for those and that's Mai's Deli. My husband and I placed our order ahead of time because when we order stuffed chicken wings we at least get a dozen and that takes time for them to make. We also ordered Squash curry and Panang curry with chicken, which comes with a side of rice. They say it takes 20-25 minutes for the order to be ready add 10-15 minutes because it varies if they're busy or not. When we arrived our stuffed chicken wings weren't done yet, so we waited for a couple more minutes. They are worth the wait, especially when they were just made. We also ordered some egg rolls. When we got home the squash curry was flavorful, which it usually is. The egg rolls we're good, but nothing compares to their stuffed chicken wings. I eat mine with the squash curry and it gives them that extra boost of flavor. The best part is the leftovers, the curry and the stuffed chicken wings always taste great the next day. read more

What a taste sensation! I ordered the Basil Fried Rice and a Stuffed Wing. I gave it 4 stars only because I felt that 2.50 for one smallish chicken wings is a tad pricey. The wing was really outstanding. The skin was crispy and had a grilled flavor. The stuffing was very good, I thought the cellophane noodles complemented the vegetables perfectly.
