I've been to Maharaja a number of times, the latest being last night for dinner. It's a decent Indian restaurant. Nothing spectacular, but it's good. To people who have never had Indian food before, I always suggest them trying lunch buffets served at Indian establishments; these are always a good introduction. Maharaja has a good variety for their lunch buffet, and it's not very expensive. However, if you want to have really good food, you have order off the menu and tell to make the food medium spicy or spicy. Most Indian dishes should have a little heat to it. Last night I went with a couple friends, and we had a few dishes. For appetizer, we ordered the vegetable samosas and "meat samosas". The vegetable samosa was good, but meat samosa was okay. I'm assuming the meat was lamb; the meat needed some flavor. For dinner, we ordered chicken tikka masala, lamb rogan josh, and goat curry with an order of 2 breads - naan and aloo (potato) paratha. Overall the food was good, but nothing amazing. I'm usually not a fan of chicken tikka masala, and Maharaja's didn't change my mind. This is one of the dishes that is not supposed to be spicy, and it wasn't; it's suppose to be a little sweet. I prefer Indian dishes that are usually spicy. The dish I enjoyed the most was the goat curry. Being an Indo-Caribbean (Caribbean of Indian decent), we only have curry in our cuisine, no kormas, tikka maslas, etc, so I tend to prefer dishes similar to what I would eat at home or in the Caribbean, which tend to be the curry or vindaloo dishes. With that being said, that is the reason I enjoyed the goat curry. What I do love is their selection of background music. They have a great mix of contemporary Bollywood music. Overall, not a bad dinner, but nothing to rave about. I'd recommend it. read more

Have been there many times and always enjoyed their buffet which has a nice selection of Indian cuisine. Their home made naan is great. Like most Indian restaurants in the area their food is too spicy hot for my taste and I just wish they all would tone down the hot sauce which would bring out the rich underlying flavors. read more

Definitely mediocre. The food lacked flavor and the service was lackluster. I don't recommend the buffet.

If you are looking for one of those places with indian food spreads for around 10 bucks. This is the place to go. This is another of those indian restaurants that loads us dishes with cream and color. Very average food. If your looking for good indian food in de, sorry your out of luck. There are'nt any genuine indian/pak restaurants. The closest are lasani on route 4 and tandoori grill in bear. Both are not decent restaurants to eat in. Good for take outs. read more

First, it's not always buffet. Only for some specific time it is a buffet. We went there in the evening. they brought out our meals after over 30 min's waiting. It's really really Slow! The waiters are all with poker face, not friendly at all. read more

I totally love this place. I along w some colleagues go here at least three times a month. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. Ask for Raj. He's very friendly and a hard worker. We love Indian food and have tried takeout from all of the Indian restaurants in the Newark/Wilmington area. The food at Maharajah is EXCELLENT! The spice blend and levels in all dishes are superb. I will continue to order take out from this restaurant and highly recommend it to others. read more

The best Inidan food in Delaware, in fact much better than the Indian food I've had in NYC and Philly. The wait staff are professional, friendly and courteous. The food is perfectly spiced and seasoned with really great fresh ingredients. I usually ask for mine extra hot, and my all time favorites are lamb vindaloo, and malai kebab, the Naan is AMAZING (when ordered directly from the kitchen). One of the better Indian places on kirkwood highway. Good buffet. But the portion sizes can be bigger if ordering off the menu.

This is not only my favorite Indian restaurant in DE, but probably my favorite Indian restaurant ever...and I eat a lot of Indian food at a lot of different places including NJ & NY. My only complaint is that the buffet food isn't quite spicy enough, but I think that's typical of buffet food. Flavors are great, selection is great, staff is great! read more

I am fan of Chicken Vindaloo of this place. It's spicy but It's just awesome. I always order it with aalu naan and I love it. Chicken biryani and chicken tandoori are not good though.They need a good biryani and tandoori cook. Buffet is also good. read more

Roger, the manager is helpful and dedicated to making our time there memorable. Try the tandoori shrimp! Jumbo shrimp cooked to perfection. Id suggest ordering from the menu for dinner, not the buffet. read more

I have been to India (twice) and eaten in authentic Indian restaurants there, not the tourist places (my daughter lived there for almost two years and is fluent in Hindi and Urdu). I have eaten my daughter and son-in-law's (he is Indian) cooking too. So I think I have a good basis for comparison. Maharaja is an excellent, authentic Indian restaurant that is reasonably priced with friendly staff. Yes, it is not the most physically attractive place, but that would be the only criticism I have. Food is average at best. Ambience of the restaurant leaves much to be desired. Beware of their poor business tactics- never order delivery from here. Their delivery charge is VERY unreasonable & they conveniently don't tell you about it when you order!! There are much better Indian restaurants in the area. My husband and I loved the Sunday lunch buffet! The only reason I didn't give it the fifth star was because the sign says authentic Indian food (which it isn't). I almost didn't try it because authentic Indian food is really spicy and usually causes me to be be violently ill. I like the flavor of the food without the heat so this place was perfect for my husband and I. The chicken tika masala was amazing. If you would like to try Indian food but can't take the spiciness or are afraid of getting destroyed, this place is for you! The staff was also friendly and courteous-pay at the counter. read more

I've been eating the same meal from this place for years so I might as well leave a great review. Chicken Marsala, white rice, and naan (garlic or regular). Great meal.Can't speak for the rest of the menu. The first meal was good enough, I never bothered to try anything else. If I had to guess I probably returned 50 times over the following 2 years after to eat the same thing again. If I had a complaint it would be nitpicking. read more

I had been to this place on 07/14 and was surprised that there were only 2 tables filled at 1.30 PM and until 2.30 PM ( the time I left) I later sensed that may be because of the bad tasting food. Food being oily can be found on roti's or dosa's but I wonder how rice, the "plain white rice" could be oily and I think they added something to the white rice so that the consumption would be less, the same was on briyani that after 1/2 spoon I could not eat anymore. The outside rate board mentioned as $8.99 while the rate charged was for $11.99 they could have mentioned the same on the board as well. When I asked them to change it they ignored it. Atleast they could have served a $11.99 worth food but that was also poor. The pani puri water had something that it tasted so so bad not even close to the one that used to be made from (Ready make (Pani)water) and there were flies on the food (Raita, chutney, salad, pani puri section). My wife had a bad stomach after eating there. Because of such bad Indian restaurants some good ones are also getting affected. The only thing that tasted good was rice pudding, rest all are so bad that its not worth for even a single visit. read more
