Maharaja has been my favourite restaurant since I was a teenager many moons ago. So just in case the owners ever read this, I wanted to say thank you for all the years of wonderful service and delicious food :) No other Indian restaurant has ever come close...your food is THE BEST. My husband and I celebrated all our special occasions with food from Maharaja, and even on ordinary weekdays we ordered takeout often. The family who owned it were always such nice people and my husband would often stay and chat with them for a bit when he/we stopped in. Dining in was always such a treat, especially during the Valentine's Day buffet. That was always so fun! The lovely music, the decor and artwork (I liked the painting of the woman with the large nostril hoop on the right wall especially), the beautiful ornate gold vases and pretty little plates the food was served on...everything just had such a nice touch to it. It was peaceful, quiet and felt like home. All of this to say...thank you from my family and me, you will be missed. Before I get into the food, let me get into the service and the owners. An absolutely lovely family runs the place and it shows, as they will come around the tables and treat you as their own. The wife shared with us stories of her family back and India and told us about regulars who she treats like her own parents since her's has passed. Was in the mood for Indian food, so I found this little gem. Ordered a mango lassi to start and it was absolutely full of flavor and creamy, very refreshing. Had a meat samosa after, which came with a sweet and savory samosa chutney. Had a lamb bryiani, which was beaming with spices. The meat was very tender and the dish was spiced with hints of cinnamon that paired perfect with the savory nature of the rest of the dish. Definitely try this spot right on Capitol Trail at least once. read more

My family and I went to Maharaja on Mother's Day. It was us and one other family in the restaurant. They had a special buffet for the holiday, so my family opted for that. Many of the dishes had little food or were empty and we were a bit disappointed. The servers did not take our plates away or fill our water. The service was very disappointing but the food was tasty! My family has been here multiple times and they have had good experiences so hoping this is a one time thing. Also wanted to add that they are accommodating and knowledgeable when it comes to vegan options. This is very helpful for our family as we have 2 vegans. read more

Take out order took an HOUR. Their website (where I ordered) said 20-30 minutes. I arrived in 25 mins. When I walked in the person at the counter said my order had just printed out, but not to worry, they would have it ready in 10 minutes for me. 30 minutes later I was walking out the door. I calmly explained my frustration to the owner / manager, who just smiled. Zero offer for anything as a consideration for my wait. Just kept blaming it on the printer. I ORDERED FROM THEIR WEBSITE. I love this place, so many gluten free and vegetarian options. Menu isn't labeled for it, but when you ask they are so kind and tell suggest different things. Even when i ate meat, the chicken curry is amazing here too. People complaining in the reviews about how long it takes for them to make it- remember it's a small business and they make it from freaking scratch!!! it's worth waiting for. just show up 10 minutes late and you're good! owners are such nice people. i don't order indian from anywhere else but maharaja!! read more

We went here on a Sunday evening at 7 for the Buffet dinner while visiting my dad in Delaware. The buffet options were vast with appetizers, several main vegetarian and meat dishes as well as two desserts. The food had good potential. The mixed tandoori grill was actually flavorful and tasty. But, everything was cold! At $12.95 a person for our party of 4, cold food in a buffet is totally unacceptable. The interior is nothing special and the service was average. There's a cluster of Indian restaurants down Kirkwood Highway, and I was feeling slightly celebratory today (new house, new job) so I popped into the Maharaja for the buffet lunch. I've never been there before, and my first impression was that it specialized in lonely men eating alone. There were two other guys there, and nobody spoke. The buffet presentation and variety were above average. There were four vegetarian dishes and 3 chicken dishes available, with plain basmati or palau, naan, soup, two desserts, pakora and different salads, pickles and fruit. My favorite veggy dish was the saag paneer, and the chicken makhani was good. I rate buffet chicken dishes on whether the boneless meat seems to be left over from the choicer bits served in more expensive dishes in the evening, but the makhani was fine. And few culinary things excite me as much as a huge bowl of gulab jamun floating in sugary rose water. $9 for the buffet lunch was appropriate. I'd be willing to go back for dinner sometime. read more

I do enjoy eating here. As I said in my last review this is a small family owned place but the food is really good. A great place to go for a good relaxing meal if you like Indian cuisine. They do takeout as well and a buffet at certain times. read more

I am quite a fan of CURRY! We ordered chicken madras and chicken curry for main dish. a little disappointed in the taste of madras. But Love Mango Lassi! The decoration inside is quite authentic Indian, quiet but a little dark. All in all, I would like to go back again to try some more because I believe there should be something suitable to my taste. read more

Went with a group very well versed in Indian food, and this place was a hit with all. Dishes were sampled across the menu with no complaints. Alcohol is BYOB-- a rarity in Delaware. My family and I attempted to order food from their website. We have ordered there before, and ever had a problem. The site kept saying that our order didn't go through, so I tried to call. Line was busy. We decided to buy from another restaurant, since we couldn't get through. Thirty minutes later, I received an email notifying me that my card had been charged $50. My wife called to explain, but the woman there just kept yelling at her about how we were ripping her off. She then called me (I was on my way to the other restaurant). She yelled at me, even though i tried to explain that it was her website, and that we did that to bypass the delivery companies and help HER. She then hung up on me. I called back a few minutes later, to explain, and she still wouldn't listen....you rip me off...you have to pay...etc. I then asked her to refund the money, and she said I had to contact the website company for the money (???) Even though you lost a few dollars in food, I want you to know that she just lost a good customer. Never going back. I don't need to be abused and be yelled at when I order, especially when I was trying to help, and the situation was HER fault. NEVER going back. read more

Really really good food and very nice proprietors. I have been here quite a few times over the years and always had the lunch buffet. Its my impression that it may have changed hands a couple of times, and I remember a middle eastern resturant in this space. But no more buffet and I thonk.this is a good thing. I ordered off the menu for lunch. No specific lunch menu but it was a cold rainy day and I have been missing England so I had what would be my standard order in the UK. I was expecting the usual American style Indian food. I was very pleasantly surprized with my food, it was delicious. The portion was reasonable and it was spiced properly. The very nice lady gave me an extra piece of naan because I had trouble ordering on line. I will return. It's a little dark inside with all the chairs and tables put up since there is no dine in option but the take away was fabulous. read more

TI believe that this restaurant is mostly inaccurate with regards to customer's time. On every occasion I picked up something, they will keep me waiting for at least FIFTEEN minutes after the time THEY SPECIFIED for pick up. If you care about your time, don't go there. read more

We have been going to Maharaja for many years but after this experience we will not go back. We walked into an ice box. The thermostat read 61 degrees! It took 15 minutes to get a menu and then another 20 to place the order. The food was delicious. Again, another 20 minutes to get the bill. I had to pound on the door to the kitchen to get the waiter to give us our check! We got the check and waited another 15 minutes to pay via card. We tried the buffet and are walking out now with half our stomachs empty and the other half regret for trying their food. The food was cold. Frozen cold. The gulab jamun, don't even bother with- it was completely low grade and disgusting! A group of 6 of us went in and not one of us walked out content. Absolutely not worth the money! My family calls in takeout from here every once and a while. The food is always delicious, though it seems like they wait for you to show up before they start making it. Food is ok. The man in-front of us was trying to pay for his meal on the credit card, but the machine was having problems. I have never seen such a patient person, but the staff was really pushy for the card. After a half an hour of us being there, he finally said He could pay cash, but it will come out of my Christmas fund (hence it being the 21st) and gifts would be late until the banks reopened. There was not even the slightest remorse. Finally we asked one of the people trying to figure out the machine if we could place our order for carryout, and he snapped that he was in the middle of something. Finally he took our order and we could see and hear him throw the pad on the floor as he went into the kitchen. Absolutely wonderful Indian buffet. We LOVE Indian food and decided on a whim to try this place and we are so glad we did. I was visiting the area while we were house hunting and this was the best and least expensive meal we ate the entire time. The samosas were cooked perfectly. Being new to the area we looked this place up on Yelp. In all honesty, it was a less than stellar experience. 1. My soda was warm. 2. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala. Sadly I found the flavor of the base sauce to be severely lacking any flavor, besides the heat. My chicken was mostly dark meat too. More power to you if you like dark meat, but I would much rather my chicken to be white meat in this dish. The rice and garlic naan were great though. 3. The bathroom was disgusting! It was musty smelling and you could see rust had formed on the heating elements. A gross toilet brush was resting against the wall on top of the rust base board. The floor appeared to have not been washed in a long time. On the plus side, the service was lovely and friendly. Unfortunately I won't be able to bring myself back for another meal. read more

This is the best Indian buffet I've had yet and I've been around this area for over 10 years. This is easily in the Top 3 Best Indian Restaurants. Each restaurant has it's own taste and style of food prep because let's face Indians are diverse and so is their food. This restaurant has good customer service and good food. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive. Atmosphere could be better if they had more space and more $$ into the décor. But that will come in time. The proof of it's quality is that a lot of Indians, Americans, and non-Americans alike frequent this place. Overall, I recommend this place quite highly. read more
