    On the bike!

My friend and I were visiting the Moab area for a few days and planned to try out mountain biking. I coordinated with Magpie over email leading up to our visit. The communication was great. Magpie is part of the owner's name.... Maggie. Magpie worked out a plan to fit our beginner status along with the timing and location we planned to be at the day of the tour. On the day of our tour, we had some short hikes planned at Dead Horse Point State Park. We coordinated with Magpie to do a sunset ride following our hikes at the park with relatively easy, beginner friendly terrain. Magpie thought that plan was a great idea! Before our visit, Magpie sent detailed instructions through email about what to wear, bring, etc. We met our guides, Jules and Mike, at the park in the parking area. They were easy to spot as the vehicle had the Magpie logo on the side... Plus the bikes! As we walked up, Mike and Jules gave us a friendly greeting. They gave us an overview of the bikes, got us setup with helmets, and showed us some basic mountain biking skills to practice. It was recommended that we bring biking gloves to wear on the tour. I was glad we had them.... Purchase some before you head to Moab so you can be sure they fit. We practiced basic skills for about 20 minutes in the parking area before venturing out on the trail. On the bikes we wore our small backpacks filled with snacks and water. Magpie included a bottle of water for us as well and offered us a snack before leaving the parking area. I recommend wearing joggers and long sleeves to prevent any scrapes from some of the small shrubs you pass along the trail. The trails at Dead Horse Point seemed about the right skill level for beginners. They are well marked, signed, and fairly flat with small hills. Mike and Jules coached us where necessary while stopping several times to ensure we were drinking water, to point out sights, or to take photos for us. The terrain was fun and not too difficult. There were a few tougher spots that our guides helped us navigate. Nothing a beginner couldn't tackle! The views from the trails were amazing! After a few hours on the bikes, we headed back to the parking area. If this is your first time mountain biking I would suggest keeping between 90 minutes and two hours. We tipped Mike and Jules and said goodbye. After our tour, we drove over to the lookout at the point to watch the sunset. It was gorgeous!

We called Magpie last minute and were pleasantly greeted by the owner, Maggie. She was very pleasant and helpful. She set my family up for a tour the next morning after asking several questions about our level of experience. Our guide was Mike, who was incredibly patient and informative; not only on mountain biking technique (my wife was a beginner), but also on the local history and geology. The bikes were top quality, drop-seat mountain bikes. We highly recommend Magpie Cycling.

This guided mountain bike ride exceeded all my expectations. I booked it over the phone with Maggie, and was picked up by Laura, my instructor, at my hotel in Moab. Laura had picked a route for our ride to match up with my skill level and what I was looking for. At the trailhead, Laura introduced me to the 2018 Trek I would be riding, and did a few exercises for warm up and skill assessment. Then we hit the trail for a day of epic riding. My instructor was not only an expert rider and knowledgeable of the area, but also trained in first aid. This came in handy when I went over the bars on a downhill section and sustained some minor injuries. She patched me up and I was back on the bike to finish out the day. This trip was literally the most fun I've ever had on a bike. I can't wait to come back! I'll definitely be using Magpie again when I do.

One of the best, most painful trips I've done. Four day White Rim Trail ride with Mike R and Eric as our guides, chefs, fixers, teachers, historian, cheerleaders and all around cool dudes. We had a group of seven in the 55-59ish age group for this ride. Food was awesome three meals a day. Great scenery. Good history lessons of the original inhabitants of Canyonlands. Did I mention that it was really hard?

Andy at Magpie took my family out for a great morning ride near Moab. We range in experience from fairly frequent adult biker to 10 year old trail novice. Andy taught us all something new, and I was amazed at the trail that everyone was able to manage after his fun training. As a bonus, our ride took us to a set of dinosaur tracks. (Yes, actual dinosaur tracks.) The best part is that the kids are now motivated to get out and ride the trails with me. My son insisted we go riding in the rain this past weekend, how can any parent say no to that? Thanks Andy!

There are the ATVs that cruise by and it was entertaining to watch them try to tackle the inclines. Definitely a bucket list destination for riders. *Must bring your own water. But I remember the get-up steep climbs and roll as fast as you trust your skills flying down. Figuratively speaking, pissed my breeches as I started. Mister Scaredy-Cat ripped, fat tire gripped into the flow over a few enormous slick slabs--youi know, let go, because it's all about that flow, that flow! Felt good again like I remember 4 years ago! Follow sort of close to the white dashed lines showing the best line to ride the trail. Along the way, I hooked with Cameron from Denver. He was cranking big thighs on a Salsa Spearfish like me. What's the chance? Salsa Spearfishes, mine green and Cam's black, slamming Slickrock having a slick-time! And OMG! Sights--an endless view of rolling red rock and the Colorado river too. We did one loop. It's a grinding workout (do it clockwise) on ups and a tense drop down--all a blast and why we love it! If you have seen pictures or been to Canyonlands and Arches National Park near Moab, then, the Slickrock trail is more of that, only you can go Gonzo with your mountain bike. Spectacular terrain, check this ride off your bucket list!
