Worst service ever! The server couldn't be bothered to do her job at even a half-assed level. Never came by again after delivering our food and I had to go to the hostess stand to track server down to get our tab after waiting for 30+ minutes after finishing our meal. Then it look another 30 minutes to get bill paid so we could leave. The food wasn't great, but was decent. A bit pricey for the quality of it. The perfect brunch spot. I selected this restaurant because of the brunch menu and the water view. My cousin and I had an early Mother's Day brunch in honor of our mothers (both died in January from COVID-19). Our experience at Madigan's from beginning to end was exceptional. Beautiful outdoor sitting area with nice breeze from water. They are short staffed but our waitress did her best and gave my older parents extra help when needed. The food was typical American food. I had the Seafarers salad which was healthy and tasty. Even if the food wasn't amazing it was still worth it for us to sit by the water. I went w fish w fries which was safe. I had no problem with the food. Nice view there but I feel like I was sitting there 2.5 hours. It seemed to take forever. I ordered a mojito on the menu. Didn't taste good at all, there was zero mint flavor or any flavor at all... they just threw mint leaves in rum. Just tasteless. When I got the check it doesn't even say mojito it just says rum. Funny because it tasted like straight rum. Obviously mojitos have rum in it but that's not what I ordered. Why call it a mojito if it isn't made right? This is our go to place for a weekday, summer afternoon lunch. Porch and dining rooms have nice river views. Too hot for outdoors today so opted for window table inside. Ann, our waitress, was a gem. Very helpful and solicitous. Unfortunately they had no oysters on the half shell today ( it was a Monday) and lager beer selection was limited also today. Husband was disappointed. Crab chowder was delicious-thick, full of crabmeat, and good flavor. We split the Caesar salad and crab cakes dinner, and the kitchen split both for us. A very nice presentation rather than our having to share plates! Crab cakes were tasty with nice chunks of crabmeat and not too much breading. Onion rings seemed like ready made and nothing special! Unfortunately, after ordering the French dip, crab cakes, pretzel appetizer, and three different desserts I have found Madigan's to be utterly unremarkable. Eat of the dishes felt like something you would find on an episode of "Kitchen Nightmares". Met some friends at the Occoquan Festival this past weekend. The street fare was not appealing to my friends, so we ventured over to Madigan's Waterfront. I had been to this place many years ago and I was not impressed by the venue or the food, so despite my lack of enthusiasm to dine here, I went with the crowd. To my surprise, we had a wonderful server! She was attentive, apologetic when things went wrong, and quiet accommodating. There were a few junk food lovers in our group and a few healthy foodies. There was something on the menu for all. I ordered the french dip sandwich with my choice of onion rings. My girlfriend ordered the same sandwich but selected fries. Unfortunately, she said the fries were cold. My onion rings were standard fare, nothing to cheer about but much better than the cold fries. The sandwich was 'beefy' and somewhat lukewarm. The others ordered salads that they enjoyed. The outdoor patio was 'dated', but was situated right above the waterfront. There were 'fans' that kept us cool on this 95 degree day. Tables and chairs could definitely use a facelift but maybe that's how they are supposed to look when kept outdoors. All in all, it was a pleasant dining experience but not first choice if dining in historic Occoquan. read more

When you choose a waterfront restaurant you risk good food over style. In the case of Madigan..you REALLY make the trade. The view of the river was charming. You look out at yacht slips along a road with million dollar homes. The ambiance is definitively there. The lunch menu is nothing to write home about however. The website menu makes this place sound much better. The salad selection is sadly remiss. We got the Caesar salad with shrimp and got mostly stalks with a LOT of rust spots and the teeniest frozen shrimp. I got the tenderloin tip sandwich with mushrooms. While it had a nice flavor the meat was tough and chewy. We did not get drinks and yet the bill was almost $50 for 2 for lunch. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful so that made it easier to forgive some but not all. If you want a nice waterfront place continue to Havre de Grace. read more

Three of us had dinner at Madigan's a couple of days ago. Our first impression was the smell of disinfectant as we walked in. BTW, the Men's restroom was clean but there was clean toilet paper all over the floor. The dispenser was broken which may explain this but when were they going to clean it up? Our second impression was that the site, right on the river, was very pleasant. Service was friendly and helpful but very slow. I had to ask when our orders were ready. Our son liked his meal; my wife and I not so much. I thought the vaunted crab chowder was more like the kind of gravy you would put on your morning biscuits than any kind of chowder I have ever had. My shrimp cocktail was all right but I have had better. My wife's seafood grill was minus one of the three types of fish as described on the menu (it did have three pieces of fish). Her vegetables were overcooked and the sauce on one piece of her salmon was cloyingly sweet while the other piece had some sort of mystery glop on it. Her piece of haddock was so overlooked, it was virtually inedible. Her glass of Muscadet was all right but so cold, it was tasteless at first. All in all, we won't be going back. read more

I am not one to leave reviews... this is actually my first one, but this was such a miserable experience I felt the need to share. Arrived at 5:30pm, got table at 6:15pm (which was fine for a beautiful night), at table at the same time, drink order not until 6:40pm, food order at 7:00pm, watched our food arrive at another table at 8:00pm which was eaten, our food arrived at 8:15pm which was incomplete, didn't get out of there until 9:00pm. Told the waitress we didn't get all of our food after having to wave her down and asked for a discount (which I rarely do) as we just wanted to leave to get the kids to bed. After another 30 minutes, the bill came with a measly 10% discount. The food was ok, the location was great, but the service and inability to make a bad experience better makes this a first time, last time visit. There are plenty of better places to visit with the same view, equal quality food, and better service. read more

I've come here two years in a row for a friend's birthday celebration. I have only tried the roasted garlic hummus and sweet corn fritters, which were both good but nothing exciting. I've had some assorted drinks from the bar, all of which, again, were good, nothing out of this world. The restaurant is located along the Occoquan river, which I imagine would be a lovely view during daylight hours, but sadly, I have always come at night. The late night crowd is pretty good; there's live music at the piano which can get a little raunchy as the night goes by. For tips, he'll play whatever you like. The service has always been great. When I came last time I was on Whole30, and they were quick to accommodate me with a plain baked potato. I've stayed away from the entrees due to price. I'm the type of person where I don't let the previous reviews sway me. My son ordered the crab frittata and I ordered the avocado toast and we got a side of the Belgian waffle. His frittata looked like an omelette. The crab meat in there had a really fishy taste. My avocado toast had lox or smoked salmon on it whatever you wanna call it. I also wanted it topped with an egg. And of course usually when you get avocado toast topped with an egg it usually comes sunny side up for over medium. In this case it was topped with scrambled eggs. The lettuce on it was old and wilted. I ended up having to remove multiple nasty pieces. The Belgian waffle came out and was soggy. It didn't come with whipped cream. The water is tap. I ordered mine with a lemon and I got it when my sons food came out. Needless to say we'll probably end up in the bathroom later. The service was bad and slow, especially for a slow day. If i do come back it'll be to give it a second chance. As of right now, not worth the money. And for Occoquan this would be my second to last choice at a restaurant. read more

From start to finish our experience at Madigans last night was AWFUL. Here is what happened: My husband, a good friend of ours, and I arrived at about 5 minutes to 7pm for our 7pm Opentable reservation. (We are all early 30s professionals). I walked up to the desk and said to the hostess, "Good evening, we are checking in for three adults for the 7pm reservation." She greeted me warmly and asked if we wanted to sit inside or out. I excitedly told her out, to which she responded, "Okay, it will be about an hour." I reminded her that we were there for our reservation, and she told me that if I wanted to be outside I would be at the bottom of the list. Surprised, I asked what my reservation covered which she replied inside. Then why would you ask me if I wanted to sit outside then??? The restaurant was dead, so we thought that after we were seated inside, we would be greeted quickly. After a few minutes, Destiny walked over and said hello and asked what we were drinking. I asked if there was a cocktail menu and she replied that there wasn't but that I could have hers but she would need it back. She handed me her paper copy of their internal recipe sheet that listed out how to make each of their drinks! I can imagine that giving the amounts of alcohol in each recipe is a major no no.. Shortly after that, another woman (she never told us her name) came by the table and told us that the other server had been mistaken and that we were her table. Okay, no problem. I asked what "Orange Beer" meant on this internal piece of paper, and she responded that she hadn't tried it but it has a high APV so it's got to be good, right? Ummm okay.. I tried the beer and my husband and I did end up getting one after all. About twenty minutes after our drinks arrived, the server delivered two more beers. The server told us that the bar messed up and "happy birthday". Very odd, but we were grateful. Around 715pm, my husband ordered the fish tacos, no pico, our friend the crab cakes, and I the poke bowl. Our food arrived at 8:20pm!!! OVER AN HOUR for three very simple dishes!! In addition, many things were wrong.. 1. My husband's tacos only came as an order of two. When we pointed out to the server that it was supposed to be three, she said that they had been sending out two all night and hadn't noticed that it was supposed to be more. According to her, the kitchen had been embarrassing her all night. 2. The server never asked what type of fish he wanted, so who knows what the little pieces of fried fish were.. 3. There was not any crema or sauce to be found, despite the description on the menu mentioning a sauce. 4. The crackers that came with my poke were definitely club crackers from the grocery store, not the Old Bay chips as advertised. (Pictured) 5. Jasmine rice was supposedly the carb that came with the poke bowl. When it came with plain white rice, I asked the server for soy sauce. After about 10 minutes she had not returned. When she finally walked by our table a few minutes later, I asked about my soy sauce. She told me that she had forgotten about it. A few minutes later, another server brought it to me with her in tow, and she told him to give it to seat 3. I understand that you have table numbers/seat numbers, but it's not very professional to talk about them in front of your customers, or never bother to check on them after FINALLY delivering food. 6. The crab cakes did not look appealing. Our friend picked at it, but you could tell that he was less than impressed. I went to the restroom before we paid the check and it was gross. (Pictured) All in all, we left at almost 9pm. We ordered three entrees, one appetizer, and four drinks between the three of us. Don't eat here! We went because of the Tiki bar on the water. They have good beer and passable wine. We had to send back 2 drinks as undrinkable. We ordered 1 rose and they brought 2. Unfortunately we decided to have dinner. If you consider this for a moment ... Stop It! Meals were bland, my dish didn't come out until every one else was done. Our vege friend took a bite of his pasta and stopped eating. The table next to us waited 45 minutes before their food came out. Just don't do it despite all that our poor waitress tried her hardest to handle the errors graciously, even heroically. We gave her a nice cash tip. My husband and I recently had our wedding ceremony and reception at Madigan's Waterfront. This restaurant is a fantastic venue for all occasions and the staff are all exceptionally nice and such professionals. I don't give a one star rating often (maybe ever). We put our name in for an outdoor seat on a slow day, and accepted a short wait that was perfectly reasonable. They called us 20 minutes later to inform us that the outdoor space was closing for weather, and we could be seated inside immediately. All of that was fine They seated us by the window, and came back 10 minutes later for a drink order. 10 minutes later the drinks arrived and we ordered. We noticed that several people coming in after us were being seated outside, and assigned the same server. They should have informed us that we could move outside since the weather had changed. Instead the server forgot about us inside. Well over an hour after we were seated, and after several following groups with the same server outside had eaten, drank, paid, and left, I had to go to the host stand to find out why we were not being served or even checked on. We had been entirely forgotten. 5 minutes after going to the host stand, they offered to "let us close our tab and move outside to a new server." We declined and they brought our cold meals out with what looked like a full price check (they kept the itemized copy, so if there was any discount it wasn't significant). This is legitimately the worst restaurant experience I have had other than a McDonalds that put two raw, frozen patties on a double quarter pounder. (Updating to respond to manager, above is unedited). Thank you for responding. I am sorry you and your staff had a bad day. We were not given an itemized copy of the receipt or a total before paying. My wife had her debit card laying on the table and they grabbed it without bringing a check. They returned with the credit slip but no itemized copy. I'm left to make assumptions on prices and discounts. All American Salad: $11.95 Chicken Skins Appetizer: assuming $10 or less One draft IPA: assuming $7 or less One Iced Tea: assuming $3 or less The most our check could have been is $32 plus tax. We stopped for a quick, late afternoon bite after kayaking. Based on some of the reviews, we must have hit this place at a good time. A gorgeous day outside- we were greeted and seated immediately at an outside waterfront table. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, knowledgeable about the menu & helped make suggestions. Altogether our party ordered a kids cheeseburger, shrimp poboy and the salmon salad. All three were delicious! We had a great experience and will be back! I live in Occoquan and walk by Madigan's daily. It has always looked fun but the reviews were so tepid I hesitated to eat there. I attended an event on the top level and everything was great. Tonight my daughter and I ate outside in the Tiki Bar and it was a great experience. The band was playing good tunes. My daughter got the poke and I got the all American salad with grilled chicken and it was great. Our waitress Marin was very attentive and fun and the view was pretty awesome. Food was decent, but only received half my order. Could never find wait staff. Could not get refills. Went for brunch, with advance reservations, could not accommodate our group on the patio even though it was practically empty, said could only do 9 or less, we had 13... Looked like a nice patio with a decent river view, too bad we couldn't enjoy! Asked up front if we could split checks, was told no problem at all, spent well over 45 minutes waiting and trying to split checks as they did not take any notes of who ordered what, and then most checks ended up coming back wrong. Paid for a few people in my group as an anonymous surprise, waiter said no problem, gave him something to say that he said was totally cool, and when he came out he immediately told them I had paid for them and totally ruined it and made it awkward for the other people at my table!! I just want to start by saying the staff and owner Beth Soto are the BEST!! My nephew who lives in Woodbridge VA asked me to help him plan a surprise party for his wife, I was more than willing but the problem was I live in NY. i googled restaurants and found Madigan's Waterfront. From the 1st time I called and spoke to Beth she was in constant contact with me. I can't begin to tell you how easy she made this whole process for me. The day before the party we went for lunch I had to see the place prior to the party. The water view is amazing but the food was delicious. I knew right then and there we had made a Great choice. Heather who was in charge of our party was nothing but super!!! She helped from setting up to making sure everything was perfect. Everyone raved about the food and the number of choices. I can't begin to tell you what an awesome restaurant this is. They also have an upstairs where they do weddings and large parties. They have a great bar with entertainment which we were able to enjoy after the party. They also have a tiki bar that you can enjoy in the warmer weather. When I do go back to Virginia I definitely will be visiting Madigan's Waterfront read more

The quality has gone significantly down since before the pandemic started. Inside and outside the smell of cleaner is overpowering to the point where it smells like a bathroom. They have this ridiculous policy where you can't make a reservation for outdoor seating. And it took them an additional half hour to bring out one meal (a veggie burger) when all others had their meals at the table. And they forgot my side salad. The food is ok. And they didn't know how to make an aperol spritz at their indoor bar. Overall so disappointing for such a pretty location. read more

As if that wasn't enough, after i went to the bathroom with my granddaughter I found white particles on the floor that looked a lot like coke. My family absolutely LOVES Madigans. We usually come here with my family of 8 and usually fpr dinner, but today...its just me and my Mom. We came for lunch and it was more crowded than we expected. We thought it was from high school graduations, but nope. I guess we are not the only ones who LOVE Madigans! The lunch menu was awesome (hey mussels in lemon/butter and lobsywr roll - boo yah!), and of course we love the ambiance on the water! K But i wanted to send a special shout out to the awesome staff. They were caught off guard with a serious bum rush... The wonderful HOSTESS, DEBBIE, was hauling tushy to accomodate everyone and everything and the wonderful BARTENDER, WENDY had to help out in tje restaurant.
