My roommate turned 22 this past week, so she hosted her birthday dinner at Madhatter because she loves Alice in Wonderland and it is a short walk away from where she works. I got there late, but I enjoyed my experience. Our server was really nice and attentive. My crab cake sandwich was super yummy and it was served with steak fries. (I'm not the biggest fan of steak fries, but that's just me personally.) My boyfriend looooooved his burger, but we're not sure if it's because their burgers are amazing or because he was starving. XD The decor here is definitely fun. Since it was a birthday and I was dreadfully late, I ordered the Hatter's Punch for us to share. The concept is super fun. The green rum punch is served in a giant clear plastic tophat with a bunch of long giant straws. It makes for a funny, if slightly awkward, drink-sharing experience. It is NOT a lot of rum, however, so do be aware of that. I wasn't peeved because I have only just started drinking, as did my roommate, but I can understand the complaints about paying $30 for so little alcohol. Also, you don't get to keep the hat. We were pretty sad. :( The restaurant is really nice in that they helped us surprise my roommate with their giant martini glass sundae dessert thing. It had brownies, Oreo cookie bits, ice cream, maraschino cherries, chocolate sauce, whipped cream... it was delicious and my roommate was pleasantly surprised. With a giant punch tophat and martini glass on the table, the Madhatter proved to be a really fun place to celebrate a birthday for someone who likes Alice in Wonderland. I will definitely try to come back for their brunch. Quick note: I was carded at the door, so keep in mind that Madhatter is a bar, if you are planning on having a meal after happy hour ends and you have underage friends. I came to Madhatter on President's Day for Brunch before heading back to NYC. Apparently holiday brunch is not a big thing in DC as the restaurant was mainly empty and the staff stated that they had a "modified" brunch menu they were testing out for the day. Surprisingly, when we went the day before, we were told that the wait was over an hour for a table! The food was basically, "meh", nothing impressive, the pancakes were hard and difficult to cut, one had to use a lot of syrup the make them edible. The eggs were fine, the best part of the meal was the home fries. The service was lackadaisical for such an empty day. It took a while for the food the arrive and the servers were slow with refilling water and tea. It took a while to receive the check, and we were a bit pressed for time to get back downtown. I've only been here during weekend nights and haven't tried the food. The drinks here are average and you shouldn't expect them to be any different than other bars. I think the 'hat drink' is unique to this bar, so it's quite popular. At the times I visited, I never had to pay a cover (bonus!). Staff is pretty lenient when it comes to getting in. Another plus is that there is a good mix of people, and for the most part the crowd can be very lively. There was always a DJ playing live - people will practically dance anywhere on the main level which can be fun. There is a second floor where you can order drinks as well. Came for brunch and the bottomless mimosas which were good! only $12 and i also had the Eggs Benedict with Alaskan Salmon, it came with a side of potatoes which were delicious and i ordered a side of fruit. everything was so fresh and so good! i suggest you come here with a reservation because sometimes it does get packed! After hearing so much hoopla about this place, I finally caved and attended a 20+ person celebratory Saturday brunch. I am a fan. They have a few private party rooms to accommodate obnoxious and unruly parties, such as ours was, and this worked out perfectly. The brunch is a pre-fix style: you have about 8 brunch meal options AND unlimited mimosas for a solid price of $30. After gratuity (included) and tax, the total came to $40. I would say that is a deal! The food itself is not bad at all either! I opted for the tex-mex breakfast burrito, it was perfectly cut in half for hand-held eating success. It was meatless but tasted amazing! The breakfast potatoes that accompanied it were a little on the bland side, but that is an easy fix with some ketchup. Most everyone else ordered either the steak breakfast burrito or the steak & eggs combo. They said it wasn't the worst steak they have ever had, and for the price they were pleasantly pleased. Most of our large party couldn't even finish their breakfasts, having filled up on mimosas - which leads me to my other thought. They severely underestimated the amount of mimosa carafes required for our table size. They brought them out fairly consistently, but with only 4 carafes for our entire party at a time... I've only been here for the nightlife, so I can't speak to the experience early on. But, if you come late on a Friday or Saturday, you're in for a good time. A club in Dupont right near the Metro with no cover all night? That's tough to beat. After starting out at a chill place like Mighty Pint or Big Hunt nearby, this is a great place to come dance the night away. The Alice in Wonderland decor is also pretty awesome - that massive hat is a great backdrop to a night of dancing, especially once you've got several drinks in you. The only caveat is the crowd. I'm not one who usually takes issue with a packed dance floor, but I'm not sure I've ever experienced one quite this packed. Every time I've went (5 or 6 times), you could barely move on the floor. But, if you find a good spot near a wall and stake out a little alcove for yourself, and don't mind getting nudged a bit, you'll be good to go. When I'm drinking and in the mood to dance, I don't mind those things so much, so I keep going back for more. And given the size and drunkenness of the crowds, the bathrooms are surprisingly clean. Give it a shot - for the location and price, it's worth trying at least once! read more

I've only been here on Saturday night when it turns into a bar/club, but I had a blast! If you want to dance to some EDM type of music and don't mind a crowd, give Madhatter a try! Their decor was great, in my opinion, and definitely fitting for the name of the place. I will say, my friends and I bought the "big hat" drink (not sure what it is really called but it's Rum Punch in an awesome hard plastic hat) and it was worth it. Between the three of us, it was more than enough to share and only came out to $33 before the tip. It was delicious and a great conversation starter! If you like the busy crowded scene but don't actually like being in the crowd, there is a second floor (where the DJ is) and there is a smaller bar. I recently ended up at the Madhatter on a Saturday night in downtown DC with a few friends. Before entering the Madhatter we had to wait in line, which moved quicker then I expected. And at the end of the line I was shocked to find there was no cover charge! Wahoo! When you enter the bar, there is a huge sweaty dance floor to your left and a bar that runs the entire length of the building to your right. Additionally there are a few booths on the first level. The second floor at the Madhatter is a little calmer- but still pretty crowded. There is alot more seating upstairs. The Madhatter has an Alice In Wonderland theme- and they did a good job and carrying this theme throughout the bar. Ordering your drink is no easy task here- the bartenders were rude and didn't seem interested in helping me. The beer was more expensive then other places- city prices. But, they did have a very unique drink- a huge plastic hat filled with all kinds of blue liquid. The drink costs $35- and that's just for the drink- no keeping the hat. The DJ did a great job- he had plenty of people down on the dance floor. He also shot confetti from the second floor every hour which enhanced the party mood. read more

The Madhatter is a cool, unique restaurant in Dupont, due to its dual role as restaurant and night club. The food is great at both brunch and dinner, and the drinks are always super delicious and reasonably priced. At brunch, nothing tops their mimosas, and at night, the fish bowls are fun and delicious. The only downside is they are insanely strict about sitting tables until everyone is present. Twice, I've gone in groups of four, where two people arrive at the restaurant first, and are forced to stand in the tiny entrance, waiting for the rest of the group to arrive. One of those times the restaurant was half empty, so that was super annoying for our on-time guests. read more

Came here randomly on a Saturday night with a group of people. Since we're from out of town we really didn't know the best places to hit up around the area. We wanted somewhere we could chill and drink but not too fancy. I saw that Connecticut Ave in the Dupont Circle area had an array of bars and clubs to go to so we walked around to find a good place to party. As we passed by, I saw vibrant lights and lasers coming out of the window and I knew we had to go there. First off, being from the NY area we're used to a cover at the door and overpriced drinks. So coming to DC and not paying to get in to places and getting a jack and ginger for $7 instead of $10 is a win in my books. The place was packed and it was hard to stand anywhere. Luckily, 20 min in, we were able to get a table. We ordered the "Hatter" for the table which is basically a big plastic hat filled with half ice and half of the drink that tasted like straight up sugar. If this is your first time here, then try it. It's an experience, but I definitely wouldn't buy it again. The music was on point ranging from edm to hip hop to Backstreet Boys. I went to celebrate a friends 21st. We had some people who were under 21 with us, and the dude checking IDs at the door was not too friendly or clear on what the policy was. We just wanted dinner... Most places russian sauce is like thousand island. I'm part russian and I don't even know what it's supposed to taste like... The bread was great and the patty was hearty and well seasoned though a bit over done for me medium well sensibilities. 11 bucks. You simply can't have a a burger without one. It was a veyr juicy and soft meat patty that just melted in my mouth. It comes topped with a veyr nice light and fluffy bun. Got a nightclub experience here and there were a few very shady and sleezy people trying to get with the girls in my group. If we didn't have our male friend with us getting them to go away, I'm not sure what would have happened. One guy looked clearly very high and nodding on something. I think the bouncers could be more attentive. Also, the coat check was a bit shady. It looked like they just threw my jacket and scarf on a pile instead of hanging up and what not. My review may be bias so please consider that I came here on a Saturday during lunch time during Pride Weekend in dc. I've heard their brunch is amazing but we just missed brunch so we were there for lunch. We sat down and a server asked if we had someone to come to wait on us yet. We said no he looked pretty stressed but he took us on anyway. We ordered pretty quickly and told him everything we wanted on and off our meals. The meals seemed to take a long time we were starving so I hope I'm not exaggerating but at least 30 mins. During that time we received our top hat bucket drink which was pretty good in my opinion. I then went to the bathroom and the bathroom was horrible. They need to make it into one stall instead of two because there is literally no room in there. You can barely open the stall door without bumping in the toilet. It's dim lighting in there and there was toilet tissue everywhere. And when your washing your hands and drying them if someone walks fast enough you can get hit by the entry door. It's the worst bathroom set up ever. The food was pretty average we all got burgers and sandwiches. I got the blackened grouper sandwich which only tasted better with the extra aioli sauce that I asked for. And the side ceaser salad I order with it as heavy with dressing. My friends said they weren't that excited with their sandwiches and had errors on their order. So would I come back... Maybe I'm getting old. Or maybe I'm not old enough to be creepy on young girls. Or maybe this place is just meh for me. The music is meh. The people are meh. And the atmosphere reminded me too much of the college scene. Which I'm somewhat over. I will say they do have a cute little deal for a fruity drink in a very larger "Madhatter's Hat" that is fun to get with a group. Is it worth your buck? Depends which bartender is making it for you and how much you were willing to tip them on earlier drinks ^.~ Unless you are completely plastered and you like meh music with meh people rubbing all up and against your sweaty dirty little body that hasn't worked out in 3 years, this may not be the best place for you. The only bar in DC that I ever go to... Mainly bc it is just the one place we've ever been and we returned once. I have only been there at night after 10pm when the music is bumping and so are the college kids but I hear the brunch in the AM is pretty good. As far as night life goes... I typically hang out in a karaoke bar with 21-75 year-olds. The Madhatter is far from that. Whoever the DJ is plays the best music, IMO. I graduated in 2003, so think of all the amazing jams that scrolled through Now That's What I Call Music! 14 and you will be spot on. It get crowded after 11 but the vibe here is great and I have never had a problem getting a drink from the bar. The youngsters are even cool with this future silver-fox (okay to refer to oneself as a silver-fox?) being on the dance floor. If you find yourself near Dupont Circle around lunch time, you owe it to yourself to try the $5 burger special at The Madhatter. A hearty burger, surrounded by the side of your choice, and with a drink; let's just say that $5 deals don't get much better than in Dupont. The Madhatter is just that, a cedar-lined upscale sports bar tastefully decorated with artwork from the fabled Alice in Wonderland character. I first found myself at The Madhatter in the spring of 2010 at a Yelp sponsored event. The bar's great location and it's vibe have kept me coming back. It's not uncommon to come to the bar during the evening and find its an occupied, but not overtly crowded experience. Unless you're barhopping late Friday or Saturday night, finding a barstool or table isn't 'too' hard. The music is pretty decent, and the bar tends to show one sporting event or other--be it golf or football--on one of their huge projectors. All in all, it's a pretty neat place. I love this club it's a lot of fun. Sometimes it's too crowded where it's like we are trading each others sweat but I come for the hats and the music! The music is great. Me and my girls love coming here. We usually like coming Friday or Saturday nights. Thursdays are too crazy because of the dollar beer special. Only issue I have is that my older sisters friend Valentina who is 19 gets in every time and she tells her sister she goes through a different door which we are not okay with when we see her there because she's too young but won't listen to us.
