I was able to make an appointment with Raymond for a simple haircut. I was curious if they do color correction since their clients always leaves with amazing ash color hairs and reviews. Raymond said he has the perfect color suggested for me to remove the green. I said why not and he showed me the color. Guess what? It was the ash blond color I was aiming for. I told him to go a bit darker since I'm afraid of the green coming back which he said was unlikely but he complied. I was happy with the results. I decided to go to Made The Cut for a wash, cut, and blowout. I'm full of regret. My best friend has been coming here for years and told me it was opened by the same person from the salon that closed at 60th street and 8th ave. There were too many red flags for me. And I should've walked out. I had a mediocre hair wash from what looked like a high schooler. She did not use enough strength and after the wash, my hair looked like a bird's nest. When it was time to get my haircut, I said I'd try anyone because it was my first time. The guy made a face when he saw my hair. He took out what looks like a dollar store quality hair brush and tried to detangle the bird's nest the hair washer left. I asked for a trim. He looked at my hair, and showed me how much he'd trim off with his fingers. I approved and told him I wanted it straight across on the bottom. As another reviewer stated, it was odd that he was blow drying my hair before cutting it. But I thought maybe that's the norm here. He cut my hair, and a few minutes later he showed me the results and I was like okay. I mean, it's straight across and cleaned up like I wanted. I thought he was done but suddenly he went in with a clipper. I thought maybe it was to make the ends more crisp. So I left, got into my car and moved my hair. I felt like it was very thin and choppy. My fiancé said it looked a bit weird but he couldn't put his finger on what was wrong. He asked why it was thin on the bottom because he knew I went for the cut to get rid of all the stringy ends. Basically, I am unbelievably pissed off at the results I've been growing out my hair for over a year because of my upcoming wedding and now if I want to fix my hair, I'll lose the length I worked so hard to grow. I searched through yelp and messaged salons in my area and they were the first to respond. They were highly rated so I decided to give them a go. I Sent the salon photos of my hair and some reference photos of what I wanted done through yelp. Raymond scheduled me for the next day at 10 am. I walked in I said hello, he sat me down right away and examined my hair and described what he was going to do and what he thought was best for my hair type. I wanted to bleach my extremely curly fragile hair. He explained how he would use a low volume developer to minimize the damage. He reassured me and said he would do his best to give me the look I wanted and boy did he do just that. I have never left a salon chair feeling that happy. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I was in the salon from 10 am to around 6 pm. I had my phone charger with me I ordered Uber eats it was an overall great experience 10/10 would do it again. Whatever you do, stay away from the stylist with the short purple hair. I believe her name is Elaine. I went in for a duster and a touch up on my bangs. She told me she wanted to wet my hair, cut, wash, dry, then clean up after drying and straightening. That's fine, every stylist has a process, but there was not one part of this process that wasn't messed up in some way. I have lower porosity hair with some curl which she didn't seem to take into account. She took me to the back, blasted some water on my head, and brought me back to the chair. However, because of my hair porosity and the 1 minute she took to "wet" my hair, it was in this wet/dry in between state. Every time she tried to comb through, she kept snagging huge chunks of my hair since the wet and dry kept tangling together. Instead of working through them or spraying more water, she just kept pulling at the hair with a comb making no progress on the tangles. I legit felt like Mia Thermopolis from The Princess Diaries pre-glow up. I came in with reference photos and videos of what I wanted. Really my goal was just fixing up my bangs and having a VERY light duster. I used to have curtain bangs and they'd grown out so I wanted to go a little shorter. However since my hair is super thick, I wanted LIGHT bangs so they didn't overwhelm my face. She looked at the photos and repeated everything back to me that I wanted, yet before I even had the chance to set my phone back down this woman picked up a handful of my hair from the crown and started cutting. It was so far back from the hairline, I could not imagine how the bangs wouldn't turn out mad thick. I don't even know how I could style them back without looking like a mushroom head now that I'm thinking about it. Honestly, it happened so fast I couldn't say anything, too stunned to speak. Either way you can't UNCUT the hair so we are STUCK on this relentless rollercoaster. Now the bangs may be forgivable for me, because that will grow back in a month or two, right? I'll just wear cute little clips. The LENGTH though??? I'm heated. She brought out a mirror to ask how much I wanted off. I emphasized DUSTER more than once and showed her with my fingers exactly how much I meant. She even snipped off a bit to show me and we agreed it was good. She snipped away little bits all over before sending me for washing. I was really trying to trust the process here. After the wash, this lady does the most half-assed blow dry I ever did see. Not a single heat protectant in sight for the blow dry NOR the straight iron. When she picked up those scissors again though, I knew it was over for me. Tell me why by the end of the cut my hair is several inches shorter than what we agreed on??? Mind you this is AFTER straightening with an iron, so when I shower and dry at home it will be even SHORTER after the shrinkage. She also said to me "your hair is curly" as a statement, as if I haven't been growing this hair out of my own scalp for 27 years. Maybe it's because I'm East Asian, but every Asian stylist I see has something to say, and they always say it like a major inconvenience. That said, she told me she didn't want to do too many layers or thin out too much because with the curl it would cause frizz. I agreed with her! TELL ME WHY THEN she went HAM with those thinning shears??? After blow drying and straightening she picked up HUGE swaths of my hair and SNIP SNAP went to TOWNNN. Those shears made CONTACT with my scalp y'all. Didn't she JUST say that we were gonna keep the layers small because too much thinning and my hair would look crazy at home??? There was no rhyme or reason to where those shears would hit. Anything was fair game. She was really randomly picking up bits and pieces all over and away she went. No consideration or care whatsoever. All of that and my bangs are THICK near my scalp, THIN near the bottom, and UNEVEN to boot. I'm going to buy shears just to fix this up myself, because the framing on the sides of my face are WHACK. The bangs don't look even REMOTELY close to the reference photos I showed. It seems this woman heard the word "bangs" and just cut them the only way she knew how. The bangs I will need to let grow back and go ELSEWHERE to get what I want. The length though? The thickness after all that thinning? It will take 6-12 months for me to recover physically and emotionally. If you don't know how to cut my hair, just say so. I will march my merry ass somewhere else. I did not need this emotional scarring. Oh and at one point she went off to help another stylist. She straight up dumped the straight iron on the ground under my chair, then came back and picked it up again to use on my head. Bonus, I have quite a few ear piercings. If you want to dramatically change the color of your hair, some hairstylists will discourage you---because it's difficult to do and takes a lot of time to do. Last year, I went to a different salon and asked for ash brown bayleage. I showed them a photo I found on google, and the stylist steered me away from that look because the coloring involved silver and grey, and she said if I really wanted that, I should see someone who specializes in that---I suppose because this is a more unusual look. However, I am extremely happy that I came here for my first experience! I had a consultation with Raymond first before my appointment. He made sure I understood everything. From the hours the process it'll take to the reasoning for the pricing. He was quite transparent and answered all questions I had which I greatly appreciated. As for the appointment itself, Raymond did not work on my hair for the most part as he was pulled away to multiple customers which was understandable. Busy Saturday and all. Someone else had worked on my hair instead (unfortunately, I did not get their name). However, Raymond dropped by occasionally to make sure everything is going well, color's all good, and if I was okay. I never felt abandoned by him. This place 'Made the Cut' to my list of favorite hair salons!! From the beginning to end, I had a fantastic experience with Raymond. Surprisingly, it is not easy to find a hair salon that does nice updos. When I stumbled upon this on Yelp and saw some of the photos, I decided to give it a shot for a wedding that I had to attend. It was very easy booking an appointment (I just did it through Yelp and Raymond responded soon after!) I got compliments on my hair all night. I also danced the night away and not a single piece of hair fell out of place - which really speaks to his expertise and diligence! He spent about an hour and a half making sure each piece of hair was curled nicely and fit together well. My up do was $75. I really appreciated how easy it was communicating with Raymond on Yelp beforehand. He was able to answer my questions about pricing and was accommodating when I had to change my reservation the night before. This was my first time getting my hair dyed and I had a great experience! I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but my stylist walked me through options and explained each step of the way (I haven't even gotten my hair cut professionally in 10 years so I didn't know what was best for me). My stylist and his assistant were so thorough with the foiling of my hair and the result was a super blended balayage! I went to this salon to get my hair dyed blonde several times over the last year and will not be returning after my last visit. I kept returning because they were able to dye my hair the color I wanted the second time around, but the third and fourth times have left me disappointed. I was happy with my experiences prior to the last two visits as you can see from my previous reviews. This is a good place to go if you want hair that is more cool/gray but not if you want warm blonde tones. I've told Raymond multiple times how much I do not like cool hair tones and it's always the hair I end up with. After washing it several times, it warms up a bit but it is still not the hair I want. The last time I was in the salon, I also had deep conditioning treatment due to the damage which was supposed to be an extra 30 minutes but I waited for 1.5 hour for the whole process. The woman who dried my hair right after this treatment applied heat without any heat protectant spray -- I don't even apply any heat to my hair because of the damage it's already sustained. The whole process also can take up to 7-8 hours depending on how busy the salon is. There was also a lack of communication for the cost, so I would be sure to get the exact cost with the details of the treatment price before you commit to it. For the money I am paying to go here and how often I go to get my hair done, I think the overall experience is not great, particularly because I'm left disappointed with how my hair looks, so I will definitely not be returning anymore. I'm usually going to barbers to get my hair done since I usually want a men's cut (shave and trim) so I usually am hesitant to going to salons because of fear and anxiety from word of mouth of what happened to my friends' hair in the past. The colorists and stylists at Made the Cut truly deserve the title of "Hair Artists!" Both times I came here I received VIP treatment. The salon is beautiful, clean and complete with a Zen garden and the staff is all super welcoming and friendly! My first point of contact was Raymond, who was super helpful and prompt answering my questions via Yelp messaging and made me feel at ease and informed about the services I would be receiving. Post covid. Just went in for a regular cut like usually before, done and happy, reached the cashier counter and found out that it was increase by 20 percent!!! No signs hanging anywhere except they taped a long paragraph sheet of paper on the counter table. At the the end of the paragraph, it talk about hair cut increase by 20 percent and hair treatment by 10 percent. What makes your business increase the public cost by 20 percent? I don't see any service improved by 20 percent, our jobs in public didn't get 20 percent, not fair and unethical! You should hang a sign on the door so everyone can see the price. I am very disappointed as I had been your customer for over 3 years. Also we are force to wash hair as well. There is no where mention that covid can be transmitted by hair. Mask is enough!!! [Post-Quarantine Cut Review] First and foremost, this is by far THE BEST HAIRCUT I've ever had! Raymond really knows what he's doing. Every single cut is so precise and accurate, I am literally blown away. He cut my hair exactly as I asked and recommended slight layers to soften out my look and I absolutely loveeeee it! Second, given it was a Friday (right before July 4th weekend) and many of the staff seem to be new, Raymond was doing his best to manage everyone at work all while cutting my hair. I normally would have wanted undivided attention, but I understand as a Business Owner how difficult it is to get back into the groove of things especially since maybe the supplies (and people) may have moved around. I appreciated the time Raymond took with cutting my hair as it turned out better than I ever expected. The staff were also a delight - everyone was super polite and graceous. Especially the front desk receiptionist and the person who washed my hair (whose name I missed), but I appreciated everyone who made my visit feel so welcomed. As for the cost, there is a 20% increase for cuts as they're trying to keep staff employed and pay for bills, so my total came out to be $42 for Wash, Cut, Blowdry & Style (Wavy Hair). I think the cost also depends on the length of hair and mine was nearing the lower half of my back, so I think it was a pretty fair price given the length and quality of service I received. I'm surprised how long the rose gold has lasted since my last visit. I booked an appointment on Yelp with Raymond and came in for a balayage on a Saturday. Carmen, my bestie would be there with me in spirit until later in the day. I was informed that a rose gold balayage would last not so long due to it being a fashion color. I honestly really liked how the place stood out nearby the N train station and the decorations gave it a very lush feel inside. It's on a level of comfort as a whole and I was very surprised with how comfortable my entire experience was. The haircut I asked was for layers was quick and snippy and I was asked how much I wanted off. The process was long and my stomach went WRYYYYYYYY every few minutes, but my bestie came to the rescue and we went to Rakuzen after. As for tipping, the lady that helped me for mostly the entire day for dyeing, washing my hair many times, and kept conversations was pretty cool. She was really patient with me and was super sweet. I think her name was Michelle but I literally spent the awhole day with her and I felt bad because she didn't get a proper lunch break due to my processing and conditioning. The color lasted from January - Early March which I would say it's pretty decent. I would probably come by again for a future ombré though. The best place to color your hair in this neighborhood. I've known the existence of Raymond and Elaine since their days at Shine Hair Salon and my siblings have gone to them multiple times for dye/highlights/cuts but this was the first time I was really getting my own hair done. Previously I went for a haircut for another employee and was okay with it. But this time I wanted a full dye job. I typically went to another salon for coloring but this salon is just so much closer to home so I wanted to try them out. After seeing all these great photos I decided to just drop in and see Raymond. I wanted a blue-gray hair color that faded into multiple colors. I went through two rounds of bleach, 3 hours the first round because Raymond wanted to see how my hair handled the bleach. I really respected seeing him try to keep my hair quality in mind versus just making a blind promise. His assistant took so much time doing meticulous, careful bleach applications, and strand by strand for the multi color. This was a very complex job but a total of almost 12 hours later (3 hours first bleach, 8 hours second bleach and dye) I came out like a majestic unicorn. Holy crap. I am amazed and so happy. Not a lot of places can pull some like this off in this neighborhood. And their prices are the norm for this coloring job. I've gotten alternative hair coloring and perms the same pricing in the city and at my other coloring places so they price very fairly at Made the Cut. TLDR: Go here if you need your crazy colors. Raymond is the absolute best and guides all his assistants with a strict hand so they give you great results. Raymond also cuts beautifully, waving his scissors like a magic wand. I'm was a pretty loyal customer and have been here 4 times for Japanese hair straightening over a span of two years. The first three times was done by a very skilled tall skinny lady that lives in SI and she was phenomenal. Very friendly and professional. My last experience really turned me off with this place. My hair was straightened by Elaine and she SEVERELY damaged my hair. She left the bond breaking solution in my hair for over 90 minutes and my hair is so thin and brittle after. I've straighten my hair many times (15+) and I know that step didn't need to be that long, most of the time it is 45 minutes to 60 minutes MAX. She said leaving it on for longer will make it easier for her to straighten and kept complaining that I had a lot of hair. Yes it did make her job easier but it compromised my hair and months later, it is still thin and brittle. I mentioned that there is more breakage this time around and she ignored it. She really is driving customers away and I'm scared to go back and have my hair destroy by someone like her again. Please take these reviews into consideration and correct her behavior. Came here a while ago and they completely ruined my hair. I asked for a light caramel balayage and showed them the picture included. After multiple rounds of bleach, they dyed and toned my hair and when it dried, it was completely silver blue. I didn't panic at this point because I thought they weren't done. However they started straightening my hair and this is when I started to freak out because it was not even close to what i asked for. Raymond kept telling me he had to make my hair a cooler tone because it was a little yellow from the previous dye but as you can see in the picture, my hair was mostly black and the ends were a little dyed so i don't know why he completely made my whole head silver. I immediately told him this was not what I asked for and showed him the picture again and he kept saying my hair was yellow before so it had to be cooler. They then toned my hair again which meant I had to stay even longer after it had already been 8 hours in the salon. When I sat back on the chair, I heard a girl next to me ask for a blue grey hair and this was when I started questioning if he had gotten me mixed up for her which is completely unprofessional. I don't know if that's what happened but either way this was not what I asked for. My hair turned out like the picture included and I was very upset but I didn't asked them to fix it because my hair was already so fried and damaged that I didn't want to ruin it more. Raymond kept saying after a couple of showers my hair would warm up and yes it did but I did not ask for blonde (picture included). I asked for a light brown/caramel color balayage. It wasn't even balayage because my whole head was blonde! This is the worst experience I've ever had. The total was $376 not including tip. I even had to tip them after completely ruining my hair! Went to this salon because a friend recommended it. Honestly, was not expecting much because I just needed a haircut but I was a little nervous since this was my first time cutting it short in years. To my surprise, I loved it! It has been a while since a hair salon exceeded my expectations. My stylist was Raymond and I highly recommend him to anyone. Love, love, love coming to Made The Cut! The only downside to it being so great is that there is usually a wait time before and during your visit (even with an appointment made). I came here right when they opened one Saturday morning and although they do an amazing, thorough job, they tend to hop from client to client. This salon does get busy and sometimes there aren't enough hairdressers to go around - but rest assured you will be taken care of and won't mind coming back for their quality of service. Prices are also very reasonable. My hair is considered long (a foot below my shoulders) and a wash and cut ranges from $30-$35. I've also had my hair toned here (no cut) for $110. read more

This is my second time going here as I came to bleach my hair blonde the first time, but this time I decided to go darker and cut it shorter. Really nice and Raymond explains everything clearly so you understand the whole process. He will tell you what is possible for your hair and be realistic but he has never disappointed me! It was a very rough not neat sloppy job. The master did the job in 10 minutes, it cost 20 bucks, this job wasn't even worth one dollar. If you can't trim, don't do it rather than do it badly. read more

I've literally been coming to this salon since I was a child. The owners Raymond and Elaine are the best people around. I've seen them transition from 8th ave to their new location on fort Hamilton parkway. The transformation of their new location is absolutely gorgeous. The decor is beautiful and the ambience is great. Not to mention is AMAZING greenhouse they have in the back. Raymond is my guy. I trust him fully with my hair. I always go for a wash, cut and style. And most recently for color. Sun, who washes my hair, hands of an angel. Not only are you getting your hair washed, you're also getting the best head massage. Prices are reasonable! Have to update my review for the covid era. If there is a time to support your local hair salon, now is the time and this is the one. I went in today after a year long neglect of haircare and Raymond fixed me right up. What I love is he makes the best suggestions. I sit down, I listen to my options and he works the magic. Loved his work the first time I was here, loved him again today. Went for something a little low key today cuz Im looking to starting work. Color is perfect, exactly the way I want it and my hair is silky soft. As far as covid precautions, I came on a weekday late morning and they were alternating chairs to keep with social distancing. All staff were wearing masks and taking proper precautions. They have a garden in the back so that there is still airflow inside the salon. I would not hesitate to make a trip here. read more

When I told them I wanted a Blueish Balayage, Raymond came over to talk about the colors, explained the process, and the products he will be using on my hair plus how long the process will take. He wanted to make sure what I understood what I signed up for. I think that adds a personal touch about the business. I felt comfortable and trusted them working on my hair. This is my go to spot for a haircut in Brooklyn. Ada is the best! The best value you can get for a wash and cut, with a massage to boot! Only downside is that the wait can be a bit long, even when you have a reservation, but it's impossible to beat the price and service compared to any other place I've been to! read more

I have lived around 8th Avenue Brooklyn all my life. Tried numerous hair salons which none I favor. I honestly gave up searching for a decent hair salon around my area up until my best friend recommended this hair salon to me. Initially I was hesitant because it is fairly new on Fort Hamilton Parkway. So i went on yelp to check out the reviews and overwhelming majority had positive feedback so I decided to give it a try. Came in on Martin Luther King day (Monday) thinking it won't be crowded, boy was I wrong. I was so glad we came in at 11am because when noon came around, the salon was packed. We were greeted by the cashier who asked which stylist we preferred. I had asked for Raymond since his name came up in most of the yelp reviews. Unfortunately, Raymond is typically off on Mondays. So i asked for another stylist that at least knew what he or she was doing, so they recommended Jeff. My friend had Dong (I might be misspelling his name). So when they introduced Jeff, he asked me what color I had wanted and style. I showed them a picture of purple and red balayage. They looked at me like this girl is crazy lol. So they said they didnt recommend it for me because the colors doesn't last long and will fade within a matter of months. They wanted to make sure that for the amount i was paying will be worth it. So i decided to switch to Ash Ombre. I was hesitant because I never tried ombre before. Long story short, Jeff was fantastic! I couldnt have asked for a better stylist. He was funny and meticulous. All great qualities of a hair stylist. He also listened to my concerns when I told him to not cut so much of my hair lol. And I also want to thank the guy who helped me wash my hair, he was amazing as well. I loved his neck massages. I was in heaven! By the way, Jeff is off on Fridays. Overall, I spent 4 hours at the salon but 4 hours well spent. The price came out to be $225. They do accept Visa and Mastercards as a form of payment but they do charge a fee of 4.5%. I ended up paying cash instead. Thank you, Jeff and all the supporting staffs for making me look and feel great! This will definitely be my go to hair salon from now on!!!! read more
