I came here excited since I've been cutting /trimning my own hair for the past two years but wanted to do something different that I wasn't comfortable doing myself. I came here on a Sunday afternoon got here at 12 and I guess I understand why the store is named "made the cut" because I got cut TWICE while waiting in line to wash my hair. There was nobody in front of me I was next in line and the first time it happened the lady who washes hair waves me over and then some other guy interrupts her and said do this guy first ... the second time it happens the short haired lady wearing on clouds said do this other girl next ...at this point I was annoyed and ready to walk out. Even the male workers who worked there felt bad for me spoke up and said she's been waiting a long time and she's next... but the said short hair lady orange hair with onclouds didn't care. I walked to the front to ask if I can just cut my hair instead cause I'm not waiting anymore for a hair wash and a chair finally opens up and I'm fuming at this point. They waive me back asked me to sit to wash my hair... they do spend a decent amount of time washing your hair 15 minutes for me and they do a mini massage. I went with any stylist and he spent an hour on my hair so they are thorough. Was it the best cut ever ? No.. was it the worst cut ever .. no. It is a lot shorter than I had wanted but my hair grows fast so it's okay. I might come back just for the cut if there's no wait.. although it's no fault of the washing hair lady it's the other workers (hair dye lady) there than just does whatever they want. Sadly, it ended up being one of the worst haircuts I've ever gotten. The entire cut took about 8 minutes, and it looked nothing like what I asked for. Don't go!!!! The bleach caused severe hair breakage. The stylist could pull out clumps of my hair just by running their hands through it, but they completely denied responsibility and insisted the damage was pre-existing or minor. The bleach cream was also extremely painful and burned my scalp so badly that it actually started to bleed. I've been wanting to dye my hair for a while now and after seeing my friend got her hair done here, I decided to give it a try. I made an appointment with Raymond for 10:30am on a Saturday and it was already looking a little busy but I got seated and we talked about what I wanted. If I have to be honest, my experience was okay. Raymond did my coloring but another staff bleached my hair and because I didn't have a friend with me, I didn't notice that A LOT of my back hair were unbleached (friends later pointed that out to me after I saw them in person). That part confused me a little because I think bleaching and coloring are the most important steps and the reason why I came to Made the cut salon was because I saw positive reviews. That made me a little sad because I liked the pink but I could see a good amount of black peaking out. After the first coloring, they added purple color without asking and told me the pink I showed could not be achieved (but I saw in pictures uploaded of other customers that have pink hair and if it couldn't be achieved, I would have appreciated to be told that before I sat down). Raymond and another staff did try to add more dye to make my hair pink after I communicated that the ashy purple I was seeing on my hair was not what I asked for. Another thing was when my hair was getting bleached, somehow the products got onto my neck and shoulder and I had to ask about the burning sensation... I think definitely make sure the hair stylist can recreate the hair color you want because if they tell you directly in the beginning, it can improve your experience. I walked in with a friend early in the morning. She had never did her hair before and wasn't even sure if she wanted to do a dye or not. I've been here before and I love what I had gotten before. (Purple/grey) That was roughly 3 years ago. I grew my hair out to get it done again. I was very indecisive about what I wanted. First was a blue/grey then purple/grey, then something completely different while skimming the internet while my hair was bleaching. My friend (one on the right) has never done her hair before so she let her hair dresser decide. I this the honey/caramel tones looks great on her. She got compliments from all her friends and she was super excited to show off how great it came out. I'm super happy with my results also. This was exactly what I have been picturing in my mind and I had an inspo picture but wow, this came out 100x better. The color combination suits my personality well and overall looks great on me. My hair stylist was Leo. He was super nice and gentle with my whole hair processing. He checked on my hair frequently and made sure that my hair would withstand the amount of bleach I was doing. I wanted some long bangs since I never had any and he managed to do it where I can tie up my hair as well. He took very well care of my hair. He was also very informative about how to use products on my hair and what would be the best for my hair after such a process. Everyone in the salon was amazed at the color my hair was able to achieve. The staff is very passionate about what they do. Came in for a brown balayage and it came out amazing! Raymond was a perfectionist and made sure it was exactly what I wanted. The whole process took 5.5 hours and my hair is still soft after the bleaching. The balayage cost $310 and the Olaplex No. 1 treatment was another $25. For further context, my previous hair was black on the top half and blonde the bottom half so it was already damaged from the previous bleaching. My only complaint would be that I couldn't get a price range beforehand because it depends on the current state of my hair, length and the desired color which I understand but a rough range would be nice. Despite looking up lots of positive reviews for both this place and Raymond, I did not have a great experience and wouldn't recommend. I made an appointment for 3 and had to wait 30 minutes for hair washing and 1 hour til actual hair cut - not off to a great start. I asked for long layers and got a very intense mushroomy layered situation that was much shorter and involved than I asked for and frankly was just not with the times (I wish he had spent more time clarifying what I meant by long layers if he wasn't sure; I've gone to many hair dressers for years who've done this easily without explanation - I have long hair and a very straightforward cut.) after 1.5 hours from my appointment time, I was left with my hair wet while he had to go finish someone else's hair who " had been there all day". I unfortunately had to leave with wet hair and a hair cut I hate as I'm a new mom who left my 4 month old for the first time and didn't have the luxury of a 2 hour hair cut (not accounting for commute). I went back to Made The Cut to clear up the issue I had with my hair after my first appointment, and the experience very good. We figured out that the problem from my first appointment stemmed from a combination of misunderstanding and a language barrier. Raymond and Elane were kind enough to re-do my hair to the style that I preferred free of charge. They both checked in with me often throughout the appointment to keep me in the loop, and both parties were a lot more careful with the communication. My girlfriend went today to get a trim and wanted to cut off an inch. As others have mentioned, don't ever let the woman with the purple hair (others have mentioned her name is Elaine) even touch your hair. She has absolutely no business working in this field. I was sitting in the waiting area and witnessed her barely ever looked at my girlfriend's hair as she was cutting it and cut off about 4 inches. Both sides of my girlfriend's hair is uneven (one side is like an inch longer than the other) and all over the place. When she was combing her hair, she yanked her comb through her hair and rip some out even when it was stuck. I could've done a better job blindfolding myself and cutting it at home and I don't even know how to cut hair. After seeing so many negative reviews about Elaine, I'm surprised she's still even working there. read more

Alright, I had to come back and rewrite my review and change it to a 5 star. Honestly, they're so amazing i might shed a tear. STORY TIME: I literally f-ed up big time. Since my hair's toner faded out completely I thought it would be "fun" to use semi perm hair dye on the bottom half of my head. I literally left it for 5-10 minutes and realize the shade was not like what I swatched and it was so ugly. I decided to wash it out right away and it would not come off. I literally cried , it had different spots and literally patterns all over my hair which was platinum blonde. (Imagine squiggly lines on a white piece of paper) I called a lot of other salons, either they didn't have an appointment or they wouldn't fix it, or they said I'd have to bleach it with an insane amount of money. I called Made the cut in the morning and Raymond said I could come in right away. He made sure it would actually work and did a test strand first before making any other decisions. I really admire this part because he actually cared and tried before turning me away. His assistant with the pink hair took her time and care to tone my hair and apply everything. She also washed my hair super well and gave me a nice long head massage also! This is key because I wouldn't be able to last 72 hours without washing my hair if my hair doesn't feel clean after. Came here for a wash & cut ($36 women's long hair) and walked out extremely happy with how my hair looks! I'm always super nervous when it comes to haircuts. I had a guy I trusted with my hair for 10+ years, but their salon closed down due to covid and ever since then I've been on a hunt to find a stylist I can trust my hair with. I had a great overall experience, but the friend I came with can't say the same. I'll talk about my perspective first then chime in on hers - WASH with Sam - Okay, so I swear Sam spent at least 30-40 mins on just washing my hair alone! I'm so peculiar with hair washers and I hate when they're so rough with me, but Sam really took his time with my hair and gave the best scalp massages. CUT with Danny - From the moment Danny started sectioning my hair, I knew it was gonna be a good haircut. Overall cut took maybe 40 mins. He took so much time with sectioning my hair and separating my bangs from hair, and you can tell he really puts time and care into his craft. I cut maybe about 5 inches off and wanted to go for a curtain bangs style to shape my face. I have atypical Asian hair (wavy, dry, poofy, and frizzy - not straight or smooth) and he was a bit rough with combing my hair. He noticed my hair type was different and gave different suggestions for how to style and maintain my hair. Also as an added bonus - I was already so happy with how my hair looked after the cut, but he went the extra mile and was like "I'm gonna curl your hair." How nice of him to style it afterwards! LANGUAGE BARRIERS - For the peeps who speak broken Chinese or no Chinese at all... English speaking salons are something I always look into because I can't speak full sentences with my lack of Chinese vocab. The receptionist speaks great English. Most workers here are more comfortable with Chinese, but will speak English to match you. Sam only spoke Chinese to me, but Danny spoke English to me and was able to understand me very well. There was not a point during my experience where I felt anxious about how my hair would result after, and I would totally recommend Sam to wash and Danny to cut! As for my friend's experience -- She had a great hair wash experience, but was very unhappy with how her haircut came out. She wanted a short hair style with curtain bangs, but instead she came out looking like Dora the Explorer. Her hairstylist took only 10 mins on her hair, and didnt even bother to section her hair. I ended up asking my hair stylist if it's possible he can help her. He asked me to bring her over. In Chinese, I overheard him say she looks like a pencil (lol) and asked who was responsible for cutting her hair. He introduced her to the boss (I think) and he ended up saying the cut is exactly like her picture shown, but just not styled. The boss ended up reiterating that the picture shows the hair styled, thats why it looks different. He helped her style her bangs, but in the end, she still looked like Dora because her hair was really round from behind. Anyway - 2 totally different experiences but I can attest to the people that worked with me today. I can see myself becoming a regular here for haircuts. The shop just recently reopen during phase 3/4? so we were glad to finally get a haircut. We were last here in January before NYC shut down. My hair had grew fast and long; so it was time for a trim. I originally decided just a wash and dry style while hubby wanted actual haircut as his hair was covering his eyes. So I didn't make the appointment with Elaine as it was just going to be wash and dry; instead hubby got Elaine and was very please with her. He now wants her as his stylist each time. I got Danny as my stylist, he asked me if I was sure I just wanted wash/dry and we both looked at my hair (checking split ends) so I said, sure why not. But I wanted my hair to still be medium-long in length as I didn't want a short haircut. He trimmed off all my split ends, gave me layers, and my hair was about 5+ inches shorter. I've done two major hair changes with Raymond and his team. A digital perm for soft waves and hair color. Digital perm was great and my hair was still pretty healthy (considering I've also had some box dye on it!). For hair color I wanted to go copper/red initially and I did, it was gorgeous! I went to Made the Cut with virgin black Asian hair and asked Raymond for a soft ash brown balayage. I showed him pictures and left with very damaged hair that looked nothing like the pictures. I went to a place with good reviews and trusted that they would have stylists that would be able to do the job. I assumed that it would look beautiful and healthy like most of my friends that had it done elsewhere. He said he would need to do 3 "treatments" to lighten it - no mention of bleach. I asked if that would be damaging to the hair and he said not too much and that I will need to use special products. He then proceeded to have his assistant bleach my whole head with foil. He left on for over an hour and reapplied once before we had my hair wash. My hair was then a bright orange color. I felt the texture was off after 2 applications and asked if we should stop the bleach process then and maybe change the color. He was too busy at the moment and was intent on one more bleach session. Three bleach sessions in one sitting is a NO, regardless of the level of bleach being used. Also, foils aren't used during balayage and they don't bleach your whole head of hair (3 times no less). After we were done with the bleaching, he had his assistant apply 2 different colors over it with a brush. The result was basically two different colors but none of the highlights I asked for. He claims that the highlights will come after a couple of wash. Essentially, I paid for a balayage but what I got was 3 bleach jobs and a dye job. After talking to my friends, a lot of them told me that their hairdresser would not cover their whole head with bleach multiple times and would advise on a slow transition to lighter color. My hair was fried. I complained about the texture and Raymond even had the nerve to say it's great you are lucky your hair didn't fall off after so many session. WTF. Why would I subject myself to this and pay all this money just to feel lucky that my hair looks fried and hasn't fallen off?!!! Please do yourself a favor and go somewhere else. This place is not cheap... and you don't end up getting what you pay for. I am cringing to see what it will look like if it looks so bad on day 1. I also called Raymond on day 2 and he says everyone has varying degree of damage that they deem acceptable but why would I go to the hairdresser just to come out with hair that looks fried. He thinks this is not so bad so it makes me also question his judgement. He says he uses low level bleach but any responsible hairdresser will tell you that bleaching your hair for hours is damaging and would explain the damage of going from black to light beforehand. He downplayed the damage. To make matter worse I asked for ash brown and what I got was not. Also, Raymond's only solution was for me to spend more money for another expensive treatment, offering me a discount. Multiple people has asked me if I dyed my hair myself. I am so angry. read more
