Strolled in on a Saturday late afternoon, honestly wasn't expecting any open availabilities. Guess it was my lucky day I needed a color as my greys were dominating definitely need a hair change. It took about 2 hours for color (mind you single process so nothing fancy) between cut and style +/- 1 hr. The color was like mhew. The cut and the way he styled it glam glam glam. Sorry I can't recall his name but I'll def want him to chop off my locks next time. He took his time to get the layers right then styled it nicely. I was thinking this must be $$$$$. I will literally go as far out of my way to go here as I need to even during the pandemic I was thinking about how to get to this salon. One of my guiltiest pleasures used to be "Tabatha's Salon Takeover" on Bravo. For those who don't know, Tabatha Coffey is an Aussie born hair dominatrix sent to salons across the country to "whip" their standards back up to par. After a period I called the "Gray Experiment" I bit the bullet and went back to my natural black for the new year. A friend recommended this place based on the quality of work and the price. If I passed it on the street without knowing this, I would never go in. It looks like Tabatha needs to come take over. However, that perception of quality is not reality. The level of skill in there can stand next to any high end salon....if not surpass it. Don't look around at the hair bunnies and balled up tissues on the floor or the rickety supply trollies and bleach stained towels or even the Jackson Pollock like stains from splattered hair dye on the walls. These stylists are amazing! As the colorist, whose English was non-existent, looked at my grays, she immediately whipped out the hair dryer to open my follicles up for the dye to take better. She massaged and went over every strand, from root to tip, and applied color guard around my face and ears to protect against staining. She even placed fine pieces of paper along my most stubborn gray regions to seal in the dye better, so it would take. I suddenly had a flashback to a color appointment at a $200 value in Soho years back, where the colorist did maybe a quarter of the work this woman did and two weeks later, the grays were exposed to my dismay. Fancy hair dye my ass. Moving on to the hair washing experience - minus a couple of comments in Chinese that were clearly about how much hair I have to which I smiled and said, "I know it's thick" and she replied "soooooooooooo thick," she made me feel like a cat. The scalp and forehead massages were vigorous but relaxing at the same time. On to the cut, which had me thinking about Tabatha's advice on how to check to see if hair is cut evenly. This girl checked and re-checked. Then asked me if I wanted to blow it out straight. I said just dry it curly/wavy; my natural hair state. The stylist took "curly" literally and proceeded to turn my head into a 1970's retro Charlie's Angels do. I did NOT complain...two hours after walking into this place, I left feeling feminine and photo-shoot ready without a lock out of place. How much? $64 bucks. I almost fell over...Tabatha would say to raise those prices. Good thing she hasn't discovered this place!!! read more

I went in before to get haircut. I didn't have to wait at all when I first walk in. They told me to go to the back for the hair wash first. She asked me which stylist but since it's my first time cutting there, I said it don't matter. After getting wash, I got seated and the stylist came to where I was. She ask me what cut I wanted and I told her and show her a picture. After she finish cutting my hair I pay and left. Only after I got home that's when I notice how choppy my layers are. I've been coming to this place for regular blowouts for almost ten years, and the service tends to vary. When they're not busy, it's a great place. I'd recommend Michael or Simon, both are really great for blowouts (even with my super thick and curly hair). Do NOT go to the lady hairdressers, they tend to be rough and don't produce anything nice. When the salon is busy, sometimes it can be an hour or more of waiting. I'm sure some of the ladies who wash hair talk trash in Chinese, but I can't understand it and the washes are very thorough so I don't particularly care. Wash and blow for me comes out to $14 (with tip I usually spend ~25-30) even with fairly long hair -- well worth it! read more

Wow; what a great experience I had here. A lot of my friends were going to Hair 86 to get their hair blown out; they looked great, and they only spent between 10 and 12 bucks!!! I, however, have super thick, curly hair, (think Beyonce when it is big and curly) and I didn't think an Asian salon was going to either be happy to work on me, or do a good job. Well, was I wrong. They didn't flinch at my super thick hair. They were gracious, patient and calm. James did an amazing job!!! Despite going to the gym, I have been able to maintain my straight, but full, hair for six days, with just a little flatiron touch up!!!! I live just a few blocks away and have been desperate for a haircut for months. I walked in around 5 in the afternoon and was seen immediately without an appointment. The hair wash was literally the best I ever had. The lounger was actually comfortable and the wash included a long scalp, neck and shoulder massage that melted away weeks worth of tension and stress. Michael took his time with my haircut, and everything: wash, cut and blowdry came out to $16!!! I will be back. Terrible experience. When I arrived and said that I did not know Chinese, they proceeded to scoff at me in Chinese (I knew enough to know insults). Then the haircut itself was subpar. When I asked for adjustments, the barber was visibly bothered like I was taking up too much of his time. The worst part was when I went to pay, I handed the cashier $12 for the haircut and $2 tip. She proceeded to ask for more and I gave another $1 which isn't that big of a deal. It was when she said that was insufficient and demanded another dollar that I felt like they were outright stealing from their customers. If you're expecting $16 per haircut then you should just put $15 as your price instead of lying and saying $12 and expecting $4 tips. 33% tip for an appallingly rude service and subpar cut. When I asked for something short and neat, I wasn't expecting to be able to see where use of the trimmer ended and where long hair began. There is very little transition from short to long hair and it isn't remotely even. Since we didn't speak that much, I thought what I described was mutually understood, but it's definitely not what I imagined. Maybe some hair product will help conceal this fact, but at this rate, I'll have to visit another barber just to fix it, something I'm not looking forward to even if their rate is $10/cut. The worst part (and why I rated it just 2 stars) is because at the end when he said, "OK, all done," in addition to being uneven, he asked "what's wrong with it?" Even after a touch up, it's still noticeable to me. I question how many male hairstyles he's mastered or if he's just as more attune to female hairstyles, as most customers appear to be women. I've been coming to this salon for the past year and they are great. They all know how to cut hair and dye it good. I never walked out of their unhappy. I had red hair and it turned orange in some areas so I went there to do something with it and I wanted to highlight it to grow out the red. The color I wanted to do the lady told me not to and she picked a color and I must say it looked amazing. I drive from Staten Island to go to this place bc it's cheap & cheerful. My hair is so long & a wash & blowout easily should cost me $40 by my house but at this place it's $14. Insane! My fav part is the wash. They double shampoo your hair & give the best head massage for like 15mins & then like a 2mim back massage all for my $14.00! I've been going to this place over a year now .Everytime I go are not gentle when it comes to washing hair.But I have no complaint because I thought maybe because is busy .Today I went to get my hair wash I had a prom party and my hair had hairspray on it.She gets ready to wash my hair she puts very hot water on my hair something she should check before applying and to my hair she doesn't. I tell there is hot .And then she decided to puts very cold water . But I didn't complain she finish my hair .My hair have hair spray and it takes at least three washes to get the hair spray out also the smell.
