I went for happy hour on a chill Thursday evening, and stayed for dinner until closing time. From 5.40 pm to 10 pm. Nobody could get me out. I couldn't leave. The food and the vibe had me in a spell. The place is located in a quiet residential street, off the busier Jersey Avenue. The entrance is inconspicuous, with only the neon sign letting you know you might be in the right place. It looks like the back entrance of a kitchen, but as you climb down the metal stairs, you enter in a world that can be described as chill, elegant, and unpretentious. Forget the trashiness of Downtown, with 40 year old alpha wanna bes flashing their cash on overhyped basic food and watered down cocktails. Madame is for serious people, far from basic. There isn't one item in the menu that sucked. I cannot drink, but that didnt stop me from enjoying myself, because the food was outstanding. The first dish were thr oysters: Pacific and Maine oysters. Both incredible with their subtleties. Then came the bone marrow with the braised beef and baguette. The marrow spread like butter on the perfectly seasoned baguette. The braised beef had a mild sweetness to it due to the onions, and it complemented the savory baguette. Then came the patè, and rhe roasted Brussels sprouts with apple and parmesan. The Brussels were so great, that it could get every child in the world to finally eat vegetables. To top it all off I had the creme brulè cheesecake with a warm cup of americano. I was done. I was at peace. By then, it was closing time, and...I didnt wanna leave...I would have gladly stayed and clean the kitchen. I ate at the bar, the place was not crowded at all and lounge music was playing in the background. It is walking distance from the Grove path, so if you are commuting back from work and are looking for a quiet and relaxed place with Michelin level food, stop by Madame. You will feel rejuvenated. I was in jersey city for couple days was work and this place came up on my feed. Thought of giving it a shot! No regrets, you walk in a basement and ambience is great - French themed. I ordered Madame Claude- whiskey based smoked drink and it was delicious. For food I tied their most popular dish: Short Rib Gnocchi. This was absolutely delicious. 10/10 all around. My friends and I ordered a bunch of items to share which is always my favorite way to dine. For starters, we got the grilled romaine, pomme frites, and bread service. DO NOT skip out on the bread service. I will be thinking about that bread for days - it was perfectly smothered in a French onion broth which has now made me craving French onion soup. For our mains, we got the duck breast, scallops, and short rib gnocchi. While all 3 were good, the duck was definitely my favorite. It was perfectly cooked and parsnip purée underneath was delicious! The girls next to us had the bone marrow and loved it. For dessert, we had the chocolate pot de creme and profiteroles. It was good but nothing to write home about. I came here to have a nice weeknight dinner by myself. Madame came highly recommended, plus the short rib gnocchi sounded like something up my alley. I made the trip over and was given a spot at the bar. The atmosphere is very lively and the staff was very kind. My dinner and wine came out pretty quickly. I enjoyed the flavor of the short rib sauce , but the gnocchi texture itself was a little too "cloud-like" for me. Just a personal preference. What an enjoyable (if loud ala booming music) little bistro find. We came in for a Friday evening meal, and with a prior reservation we were seated immediately. Every member of the staff was kind, efficient and pleasant despite the bustle. Loved the "see no evil; speak no evil" classics wall art! My Escargot was excellent! 07/20/2025 It's almost like walking into a speakeasy... Down the stairs into the dark bar/restaurant... but no secret panel or book to tug on. We started with their Moules and frites! Ok, so I have always said (in my opinion) that McDonalds has the best fries. Well, now... Madame's fries blew away McD's fries! Normally I try to stay away from 'deep fried' foods, but I couldn't stop eating these perfectly seasoned skinny fries. SOOOO good! The short rib Gnocchi (confit tomato, smoked ricotta and herbs) was enjoyed by 3 of us. Lots of gnocchi as well as short rib meat. Excellent sauce. My sister in law decided to go with the duck breast (parsnip puree, shaved Brussel sprouts and pomegranate) which she enjoyed very much. Madame is like a best kept secret. The sultry electric sign illuminating the around the corner entrance, in what feels like a hidden alleyway, beckons you to head below ground to this French hideaway. The dim lights and cozy vibe entice you to stay a while. We sat at the bar, ordered fantastic cocktails, and shared one of the best meals we have had in ages. Shockingly good. The beet salad, sweet and savory, and big enough for two. We demolished it in 2 minutes. The Bread Service, a playful take on French onion soup, giving you the best part; the broth soaked bread and caramelized cheese. You might fight over the last bite. For our main we shared the Chicken Cordon Bleu. This is what they are famous for and there is no question as to why. It's unlike any you have had and will have again. It's ruined me from ever ordering this dish anywhere else. I don't even know how to describe this to do it justice. Let's just say that we both died and went to heaven. Four healthy portions of a roulade of moist stuffed chicken. The ham has a smokiness and the cheese is elevated-not simply Swiss. The outer edge as thick and crisp as you would wish for. We actually did fight over the last one. It's served with a bed of sautéed kale. My husband hates kale. He ended up eating most of it and was blown away by how delicious it was. It's that spectacular. Lastly, after we licked the plate, we ordered espresso martinis and the profiteroles for desert. They took a little time, I'm guessing because they made them fresh. Three warm puff pastries filled with luscious ice cream, toasted hazelnuts, and drizzled with hot fudge. From the first bite, you are in heaven yet again . The delicate crisp, outer edge of the pastry, their pockets of air filled with creamy cool ice cream, the warm fudge drizzle, and then the crunch of the toasted hazelnuts are beyond anything you can imagine. It's not just the fast, it's the texture, which is unlike anything I've had. We left nothing on our plates throughout the courses, and were both sad each time we finished a dish. The bartenders were friendly and on point Melanie the manager greeted us, thanked us for coming, and was beyond welcoming. There's no question that we will be back as soon as possible. I had been really eager to try Madame for quite some time, so I finally made it a priority to get there recently. The restaurant and cocktail lounge was down a few steps, into what looked like a cool basement, with brick walls and dim lighting. From the moment we checked in with the hostess to the second we settled our bill, the service was impeccable! We could not get over just how professional and friendly the staff truly was. In terms of the drinks, I started with the Simone de Beauvoir, which was served in a flute, as it included brut champagne, ginger, spiced agave, lime, and mezcal. I was not quite sure what to expect in terms of the flavor of that wacky combination, but it was pretty enjoyable. I think there might have been too much of the agave, though, as it became too sweet the more I consumed. For my second cocktail, I opted for the Jeanne de Clisson, which was a more familiar blend of passion fruit, lime, chili, mezcal, and tequila. Despite the beverage list highlighting the included alcohols towards the end of its noted ingredients, the drink sure was boozy!! My companion had also had the Jeanne de Clisson, as well as the namesake Madame Claude, which had been a sweet blend of cinnamon, chocolate, amaro, and bourbon, topped off with a smoker. From the food perspective, I went with the Long Island Duck Breast, which was served in 2 large, rectangular pieces. The meat was very tender and not overly fatty. It was served over a parsnip puree, which was tasty, but could have been warmer and served in more of a generous portion; it was more like a light smear across the plate. There was also a small salad of shaved brussels sprouts and pomegranate seeds that was really delicious. My companion enjoyed his Hanger Steak and potato puree as well, though we both felt that the portions were a bit small for the cost. Overall, we were largely pleased with our Madame experience and found the atmosphere super cool, so we plan to return! read more

This restaurant was fantastic. The ambiance is great. You feel like you are waking into an old Speakeasy. The experience once seated is even better. The wait staff was helpful and friendly. The mixed drinks all have fun names and are quite enjoyable. Started with the French Onion Mac & Cheese. Next we had the Grilled Romaine Caesar Salad. For our entree we had the Madame Burger with Foie Gras. Even though the server indicated they had run out of Foie Gras, she was able to secure some for us. We finished with the Abrogado. Found ourselves in this dark alley on a rainy Sunday night. The place wasn't empty but plenty to tables open so reservations may not be required. We were not prepared for what a treat this meal was going to be. Some of the best moules frites (the fries really) and pasta (short rib) I've had in awhile. And the portions were massive! The kale salad was killer. The fried chicken paillard - still not sure what that is but it was crispy and saucy and meaty and enormous. Focaccia I hear some other flavor iterations were better and I prefer a real tarte flambee but still enjoyed. Damsel in disguise cocktail (passion fruit margarita) was not very passion fruity but still yummy and refreshing. Wow, this place has been recommended to me by so many people and I was so excited to say that he lives up to the hype ! Everything is incredible. The service is impeccable, and every drink comes tableside with smoke or some sort of fancy glass with an elegant garnish , everything is just incredible down to the T the owner prides himself on perfection. We started with the fried polenta, which was crispy and delicious and also the burrata, which was so creamy it pretty much just melted in our mouth My friend ordered the side chick which was so gorgeous, and tasted even more delicious, than it looked. I had the smoked old fashion, which was equally amazing. She ordered the Madame burger and I had a grilled ribeye. The burger was so good. I actually ended up stealing a few bites from her! Everything was cooked perfectly, and all the sauce accompanied the food very well, not to mask, but enhance the flavor. We went here because we had been to Cellar 335 and loved that and since it's the sister restaurant was a no brainer. We were wrong. The food was average and the drink service was weird and slow. I ordered a martini on the rocks and got served a martini with one giant cube in a rocks glass after I stated I ordered it in the rocks and sent the martini up they served me back.. It's been years since I've gone to the original restaurant ( before jersey city became popular ) and apparently the business was sold and owned by a different person. Though it's not the quaint, small, cozy restaurant it was , the new concept is equally as inviting - sexy, dim lit , well decorated space with an amazing bar ( and cocktails ). I was in the neighborhood for a haircut ( I live in the city ) and I always struggle finding great places ( this is an exception ). I'm glad I did , food was delicious. We tried the bone marrow , escargot , focaccia , truffle pasta and schnitzel . I enjoy the way the chicken was prepared - with lardon and mushroom and the sauce on the side instead of doused in sauce . The crème Brûlée was also well done - I appreciated the lavender twist . The music is lively, the bar tenders are great at mixing their cocktails and food is very good. The house cocktails are all well balanced and our server Orlando was well versed in the libations. We tried the escargot, which was delicious, short rib pasta and Moules Frite (mussels with french fries). The short rib meat melts in your mouth, and the accompanying fresh pasta is served al dente. Enchanté Madame Claude Bis. 5 stars for a delightful Easter Brunch. The entire staff was very nice and accommodating. The Madame came out herself to greet us and snap a photo. Half of our brunch party was late due to NY train issues but the MCB staff kindly sat the punctual half regardless and served us drinks while we waited (and took Yelp pics). The Escargot appy is a must try. The dish was délicieux. Bread dipping was addictive. After a couple mimosa rounds and snacking on the apps the main dishes arrived in perfect timing. It was like they were catering specifically towards us. We all enjoyed our meals. My Baked Egg Ratatouille était parfait, the sauce was savory, the veggies were soaked in flavor and baked with a slight crisp covered with a baked egg on top, yummz! I'm giving this place 1 star for a cool ambience. But otherwise nothing good to share. The waitress seems all over us to get our drink order but never come back ask how the food was. The kale salad comes with a nice fat layer but we didn't realize it was there til we eat almost the whole thing. It is very dark inside so we just didn't see it and the waitress never told us. The lobster Thermidor was nothing like a lobster Thermidor - more like lobster leeks and pesto. Bone was good but small portion for the price. Beef tartare had no flavor, I'm not sure what happened to salt and pepper. Overall the food needs an adjustment. Very disappointing because we are fans of the chef. read more
