The food is amazing, the service is great and the playlist is vibey af! This was such a great choice for my homegirls bday dinner and we had such a great time trying a bunch of things off the menu.
Had a wonderful birthday celebration for my husband here. The service was impeccable, making the evening feel extra special. The appetizers set a high bar--the crudo was fresh, and the KFC sliders and steak yakitori were great. I highly recommend the branzino; it was expertly cooked with a firm texture. For dessert, don't skip the olive oil cake--the frosting is lovely. While my red wine was solid, the Luciano cocktail and espresso martini were the crowd favorites.
Wow!! That had to be my first word on this review!! Jane Doe is an Italian/Asian fusion restaurant The flavors coming out that kitchen are something special! I came here for a co workers farewell dinner. We decided to order a few apps and dishes to share and im so glad we did that because we were able to try a few things! Omg the chicken and salmon skewers were magnificent! We also had the Octopus and lion mane mushrooms to start. All amazing!!!!!! For dinner we ordered the sliced chicken dish, the linguine, the shrimp scampi. For dessert we had the tiramisu and Lemon Olive oil cake. Amazing! I love a restaurant that incorporates all these unique flavors without overdoing it. Its executed so perfectly at Jane Doe. Staff here is very pleasant and attentive! [[HIGHLIGHT]]The space is beautiful! I love natural wood colors with the pop of green! This place is amazing!!!! We had a reservation for 4 so we didn't have a problem getting seated right away on a Sunday night. My SIL comes here often so we tried it out. When you first walk in, the ambiance is beautiful! The exterior and interior really stand out and is such a vibe. We ordered 3 apps: the whipped ricotta (you can get extra bread), the octopus carpaccio and crispy mushrooms. Soooo amazing! My husband ordered the tagliatelle and I ordered the mafaldine. OMG, both pasta dishes were so good!!! For dessert, we shared the semifreddo. I ate at so many places that week, but Jane Doe really stood out. I highly recommend!
Jane Doe is a bit hit or miss for me, but there's one dish that truly stands out: the prawns. They're grilled nicely with good texture, but the real reason to order them is the sauce. It's rich and savory, finished with scallion oil and chili oil, which adds fragrance and a subtle heat that keeps it from feeling too heavy. I honestly wanted bread just to mop up the sauce. We also tried the crispy mushrooms, which were pretty average on their own and a little heavy from the cheese, but once dipped into the prawn sauce, they actually became much more enjoyable. The lumache pasta uses large shell-shaped pasta with a strong olive oil flavor and was slightly too salty overall, though the pork itself was cooked at a good temperature. The pork katsu was the biggest letdown. Despite looking impressive in size, the pork is pounded extremely thin, and the breading is thicker than the meat, resulting in a dry texture. I wouldn't recommend it. If I return, it would be purely for the prawns and that sauce.

Very interesting octopus carpaccio: spicy and flavorful, almost like they made a salsa and marinated the octopus in it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was full so it is popular.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

The Italian Japanese fusion has become a popular food trend, so nice to see it locally. I had their market fish of the night branzino, it was perfectly cooked and served beautifully. Very flavorful but i would not say Japanese flavored or Italian, Just damn good! Im excited to come back and try more from their menu.

Understandably it doesn't have a great mocktail selection as it is marketed as a "craft cocktail bar and restaurant". I think when my group went they had 2 choices so we got both and neither were good. We asked if any of the drinks could be made without alcohol and were told that they couldn't. What we ordered: Garlic Bread - confit garlic & herb pinsa bread Meatball Yakitori - jasper hill white cheddar, soy balsamic, onions, chives, ichimi pepper Tomato Milk bread Focaccia - zucchini butter, evoo, basil Tagliatelle - bone marrow cacio & pepe, black pepper, pecorino Wagyu Skirt Steak - laminated potatoes, truffle-parm aioli It is a fun place to visit with friends for drinks and the food is decent. I like their Japanese/Italian fusion inspired menu but there wasn't anything we tried that wowed us this time around.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We were seated at a table by the front door which was great because it felt like we were tucked away nice and cozy in our own corner of the restaurant where conversation could be heard and no one had to shout.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Sorry for the lack of pics but we ordered four appetizers; whipped ricotta, tuna crudo, steak yakitori, and KFC sliders, none of which I did I take a pic of. All were delicious but if I were to rank them it would be steak yakitori first. KFC slider second by a whisker, tuna crudo third and the whipped ricotta fourth. Entrees ordered were Mafaldine, Branzino. Two of the chicken dish, Lumache and two of the scampi dish with prawns. Everyone was very happy with their entrees and there was not one take out bag to be had! Javon our server was phenomenal and handled our party of seven deftly. Jane Doe was worth the wait and definitely worth a revisit.

I don't often take the time to leave reviews, but this experience absolutely deserved one. The food was outstanding from start to finish. Every course was delicious, beautifully prepared, and exceeded expectations. That alone would have made for a great evening. What truly made the experience exceptional, however, was our server, Kyle. Having managed fine dining restaurants myself and dined at many high-end establishments, I pay close attention to service. While this isn't marketed as fine dining, Kyle delivered a level of service that absolutely was. His attention to detail, professionalism, and cleanliness were second to none. After every course, he didn't simply clear plates... he thoroughly cleaned and reset the table with a level of care and precision that I honestly haven't seen from a server in a very long time, anywhere. Every detail was handled seamlessly, making each course feel like a fresh dining experience. Kyle elevated an already fantastic meal into a truly memorable one. Restaurants can teach the mechanics of service, but genuine hospitality and pride in your work are much harder to find. Kyle clearly has both. The kitchen deserves compliments for an excellent meal, but Kyle deserves recognition for providing some of the best service I've experienced in years. He's a tremendous asset to your restaurant, and I hope his hard work is recognized. read more

My second time here and a first for my friends We started with the crudo and the whipped ricotta and the carpaccio for me the whipped ricotta was amazing with the date syrup and the olive oil and the carrots gave it a perfect crunch I hope they never change it I had the Lumache omg what can I say but it was simply amazing so delicious my friend had the Mafaldine another amazing dish it had a smoky taste to it that was so yummy and my other friend had the special dish of the day which was the black bass fish she loved it We also tried the tiramisu which was a little dry for my taste but we also tried the Lemon Olive Oil Cake which in my opinion should be called Limoncello Cake because it has a very profound taste of lemon which reminds me of limoncello lol it was super moist and delicious a must try! Food (5/5): The food is a bit expensive but it's quite delicious! I ordered the chicken katsu and our table shared the Whipped Ricotta and Scallion Pancake. The scallion pancake was a bit small but it was super delicious. The chicken katsu had an interesting tangy flavor and was nice and crispy. Service (4/5): Top notch service with super friendly staff. Really friendly waitress who was helpful and great! Only issue we had was we were asked if we wanted a bread refill for the Whipped Ricotta and we didn't know it's cost $5 which surprised us a bit on the check. Upon entry, the space for Jane Doe has a moody but upscale vibe. The high ceilings dim warm lighting are the perfect counter to the dark decor. Every dish and drink ordered was vibrant and flavorful with fresh ingredients. This is a great spot to go as a group of 4 so that you can share a variety of dishes. The ricotta appetizer is a very generous portion. It looks like the menu changes here quite frequently making it somewhere to revisit again and again. read more

Dang, this place would be right at home in the trendiest Soho block. Jane Doe is probably the best place in downtown JC when you want a date night, girls night, boys night, impress-the-in-laws night, or anything in between. The vibes are dark and sleek, the music is upbeat without being too loud, and the food....man, the food.... Asian influences reign supreme throughout the menu, with a strong emphasis on scallions. Now, I hate scallions. I think they're the devil's herb. But somehow, they worked here. Like with the Scallion Pancake, which is unlike any scallion pancake you'll find anywhere. It came topped with sauteed shrooms and scallions, and I effing LOVED it! I ate every bite of those nasty scallion strips and enjoyed every second. How??? Both my Mafaldine and my friend's Scampi were huge and loaded with all the good stuff. If you want smoky and meaty, get the Mafaldine, and if you want spicy and shrimpy, get the Scampi. For dessert the S'mores Semifreddo will impress by being not too sweet, while the Limoncello Olive Oil Cake with mascarpone frosting will generally be the crowd pleaser. If you're looking to libate, try The Camila for a subtler, gin-based cocktail, or The Luciana to get your tropic on. Pro tip: Tuesdays are half-price pasta nights if you pay cash. read more

Very cute choice for a date night/girls night etc.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] we ordered the whipped ricotta to share and then the Rigatoni, Malfaldine, Scampi, and Cacio e Pepe. The ricotta was amazing and the rigatoni was our favorite. Everything was really good but those were stellar! read more
Jane Doe fits into the neighborhood beautifully, with its swanky decor and indoor-outdoor seating. I have been twice, and we've always been seated promptly and had friendly servers. The menu is an eclectic fusion of Italian & Japanese flavors, and I appreciate the concept. The execution, however, was a bit off... Whipped Ricotta: huge portion with tons of soft bread. It was a bit too salty but somehow bland at the same time. The peperonata did not add much to the dish in terms of both flavor and texture - could have used a bit more acidity to it. Rigatoni: speaking of acidity, this dish had too much. I am a lover of all vinegar but this balsamic glaze was too overpowering for this dish. There was too much going on with the sausage ragu + scallions + whipped ricotta. The textures did not mesh very well together and even if you tried mixing the ricotta with the sauce more, you couldn't get away from the balsamic. Linguine: not a bad dish but incredibly unimpressive. Pesto sauce was not very well-mixed so some bites were more lemony, some bites more pesto. Tagliatelle: beautiful presentation with the bone marrow included, but felt they could have distributed the bone marrow fat a bit better instead of leaving it in one chunk. Was a bit too oily, but the pasta was perfectly al dente. Mafaldine: probably the best of the dishes we tried over two visits, but was way too salty. The Japanese curry vodka sauce had a lot of potential but felt like someone dropped a salt shaker into it. read more

We have a great time whenever we come here. Menu is American/Italian/Japanese fusion. Decor is old-timey. Music sounds great on the sound system but isn't too loud. Tonight we had the linguini and the layered fries. Both were excellent! Our server was Jonathan who was really friendly and knowledgeable. read more

Another great downtown restaurant by the owners of Orale and Dullboy! The set up seems high casual - Nice for a date! The front of the shop is open like a garage, and it's a nice way to get fresh air in. Drinks are strong and tasty. Ordered the Lupe and Yuki's cup. Yuki's Cup strawberry gin was tasty and the ginger helps balance out the sweetness. The Prawn was delicious, but note that you only get 3 for $18 - Would not get these at this price point again unfortunately. Split the Linguine which was delicious. $22 for a reasonable serving. The sunflower seed pesto sauce was delicious, and the linguine noodles were thick and cooked perfectly. The sunflower seeds in the dish were a nice touch, and they are generous with the topping of breadcrumbs. My girlfriend in Jersey City has been wanting to try this new restaurant since it opened, so we went this past weekend with our other girlfriend. I was a little apprehensive given how many negative reviews I read about the steep cancellation/reservation change fees on here. In one review the business manager replied that there's only 3 tables of 4 in the restaurant - to that I would say, false! One side of the restaurant is all banquette seating - you could make a table for 4, 6, 8, you name it! Be careful when plugging in the address into Uber / google maps - There's Jane Doe and Jane DO both on Newark Ave, so easy to choose the wrong one if you are not careful. The inside of the restaurant is very pretty and moody. It's a great atmosphere for a date night. I wish everything else here lived up to the aesthetic. The food menu is limited and the drink menu is complicated if you are not familiar with the types of alcohol and ingredients. The thing that really ruined our experience though was our server. In this geographic area, I feel like you rarely get attentive service these days. Our waitress was the extreme opposite - she would not leave us alone. She repeatedly interrupted us and was very socially awkward. I don't know if it was because she was trying to rush us along or if she was simply clueless on social cues. She couldn't answer our questions about the menu either. We decided to share the white bean dip (based on the positive reviews I saw here) and the sunchokes 3 ways. The dip was delicious - they charged us 4 bucks because we needed a few extra pieces of bread to finish it. For mains, my friend and I each got the mafaldine and my other friend got the rigatoni. The dishes were okay, different. None of us were blown away - I don't think I'll be back here again anytime soon, unless it's just for a drink at the bar while I wait for a table next door at Cellar 335. read more

As a vegetarian, I did find this place lacking vegetarian options and flexibility. For example, I ordered spaghetti pomodoro and was told I can change the pasta type (ie- rigatoni) which I didn't understand why. Also, when I asked for hot peppers or red crushed peppers they didn't have any but gave me chili oil. The whipped ricotta appetizer was good but again wish they had more options. I recently had the pleasure of dining at this gem. The ambiance was exquisite, creating a perfect setting for a delightful meal. The staff's friendly service added to the overall experience, making it a memorable evening. We ordered the meatballs and ricotta dip for an app which was delicious but not amazing. The ricotta toast is great if you're a balsamic fan, but I wouldn't recommend it for someone who dislikes it since it's heavily drenched in it. Rigatoni was delicious. 4/5 Full of flavor, just a tad too salty. The fried lasagna was also delicious, but just slightly burnt. Never had fried lasagna before but it was just a noodle with some ricotta, cheese. The sauce is a bit more plain compared to the rigatoni, but still pretty good. Snickers dessert: 4/5 Tasted like snickers ice cream with caramel and chocolate drizzle! Overall a great experience and would come back here to try other dishes. Definitely one of the better restaurants in Jersey city. Perfect if you're looking for a fancier spot to go to for a date/night out. read more
Heard about half price pasta Tuesdays at Jane Doe. The location appears to be a converted body shop but the interior has been conveyed into an upscale stylish bar restaurant. A very intimate setting. Let me just say the pasta was fantastic. Beyond my expectations for what is, essentially a simple dish. I got the spaghetti and my friend got the linguini. The pasta is perfectly al dente and likely made on site. The sauce is savory with the a slight kick. But this place does more than just pasta. It boasts a to-die for dessert menu. I don't know where to start with the accolades of this restaurant. Let us begin with the ambiance: you enter a warmly light room that is busy with lively conversation, great smelling food, chic decor...you think "am I in New York?" Then, you are seated at a table with a colorful shag rug that makes the experience so much cozier and welcoming. The waitstaff are so nice and accommodating. They gave us ample time to look at the menu and even gave some recommendations. I like splitting out portions (like tapas style) and the waitstaff was happy to comply with bringing items out at differing times for us to enjoy. They also got us new silverware, plates and cleaned the table in between courses...that is what I call service! Let's talk drinks. SO MANY TO CHOOSE FROM! All very fun, creative and very delicious. My friend got the Mod-tini (like an espresso martini but better), I got American Trilogy (like an old fashioned but it had apple brandy in it) and my last friend for The Silvia (a pineapple based mocktail that she adored). Then the food came...EVERYTHING we ate was amazing. We started with their homemade garlic bread. This bread reminded me of homemade pita with a garlic confit spread all over. IT WAS SO WARM AND PILLOW-Y. We also shared the polenta cake that came with a parmesan foam (mouthwatering) and melt in your mouth steak yakitory skewers. We then split 2 pasta dishes: Homemade tagliatelle with bone marrow in a cacio pepe sauce and homemade mafaldine in a japanese curry vodka sauce with chicken. Both pastas were amazing in their own way. The bone marrow elevated the cacio pepe to the perfect degree, and the curry vodka sauce had an amazing depth of flavor and umami. Lastly, it was my birthday, so we split the limoncello olive oil cake. Wow...I would describe this cake as an Italian tres leches. It was so wet, dense and DELICIOUS...I couldn't stop eating it. A short walk from the main downtown area, I had high hopes for Jane Doe as I've enjoyed other establishments from the same ownership. The food and drinks were very good and my group had a great time. I was thinking this would become a regular go-to spot but then my friend got charged a $100 no show fee because we thought we needed 2 tables and only needed 1. Keep in mind they quickly filled the additional table, we spent a lot of money on food and drinks, and the host said "no problem, but let us know more ahead of time next time". The surprise the next day was unpleasant and ends up outweighing the good time we had. There are lots of spots in Jersey City and plenty more coming so I'm not in any rush to return. Definitely go for the vibe more than the food. The kimchi chicken chorizo tasted like vegan "beyond" meat, the meatballs were the definition of mid and the garlic bread was just ok. The pastas are very good, but everything else tasted a bit "off". The service was attentive and helpful. It's basically one of those trendy cool inside restaurants that you eat at but will not make your usual rotation of restaurants due to its obscurity. read more

This place is 21+ and definitely a classier date vibe. The service is great and the food came super quick. My husband and I shared a couple items because we wanted to try more things. We got the Whipped Ricotta, Shrimp Scampi, Mafaldine and Pork Katsu. The ricotta was very yummy and was topped with bell peppers that gave it some sweetness. The pork katsu was done sooo well, perfectly crispy and not too much breading. Both pastas were yummy as well. The mafaldine definitely has a stronger tomato taste than expected, but I liked it! We wanted to try a new spot in JC and came here when it was quiet. We needed a reservation even though there were dozens of tables that remained unoccupied the entire hour we were there!!! Bad customer service!!! They had us sit at the bar where it's not really cozy and sadly the menu is really limited for such a great place! No basics and no fool-proof dishes like sandwiches or wraps, French fries ect. Most of the dishes were fusion based but you have to have a pallet for the flavors. I ordered the rigatoni dish and the pasta was UNDERCOOKED!!! Ok, we call it aldente - but they really didn't cook it at all. The sauce was tasty and had some meat in it but I didn't complain about the hard pasta because that's how some places prepare their rigatoni. There's a basic drinks menu and the good news is that the staff is really attentive-- but the food selection (or lack there of) is NOT worth it! The ambiance fools you into thinking they have a lot of different plates, but they really need to expand what they serve for a wider audience of restauranteaurs! read more
