Great experience and a clean operation. We did a rafting trip on Snake River - we went through about 8 or 9 rapids and it was pretty fun! It's a 30 min drive to get to the start of the rafting trip, then a 40 min drive to get back. Location is convenient, and the river was not too crazy. We went on Labor Day weekend, and the crew we went with wasn't too overwhelming or crowded. Definitely wear sandals instead of hiking shoes! You can jump in the water, and the sun will dry you up. The following review must be read in the accent of the great "Ricky Bobby" as it adds to the "Je ne sais quoi" (a phrase I knew how to spell before I googled it )of our experience at Mad River Boat Trips. (Sean Connery Accent Acceptable) We chose this place due to our google search and it's high ratings across several platforms you could call this place Pizza Hut cause man it DELIVERED! We signed up for a simple float trip as my father can barely balance on a king size mattress, let alone a raft, and we didn't want to lower the businesses water recovery percentage. First we had a lovely taxi in a big white van WITH WINDOWS. Our driver Ollie just radiated! A wealth of outdoor knowledge no normal human would ever have or need. The mans aura literally aligned everyone's chakras in the van....with windows. Built like a lemur, w the wisdom of bear grylls senior, this mans sheer presence was a privilege. I left that van cleansed ladies n gentleman! Next we met our guide Jeff with a J not a G. A great big mountain man, in a pearl snap button down, lookin like Tom Ford if he actually drove a Ford. This man had a beard that could put out forest fires w a simple twist of the neck. His beard the color of Fire and Ice, yes Ice, Jeff is getting older now. Not knowing what to expect next, we set off down the river, Jeff gave us a rundown of most of the wildlife we may see, with the pinnacle being the crest of all that is red, white, & blue, the mighty BALD EAGLE. Jeff steered us down the river with the grace of a wedding cake decorator. This man even parallel parked a motor less raft upstream with one oar once, look it up. After a short 20 mins we started seeing EAGLE after EAGLE after EAGLE! It felt like 4th of July! It was like Oprah was on the river yelling "you get freedom! You get a freedom! You get a freedom!" All while Jeff narrated our boat ride with his almanac of wildlife facts, all said with his rich voice smooth as mahogany, I could guarantee it would make Matthew McConaughey blush. We saw a total of 17 Bald Eagles all dif ages, mates, kids, step cousins, we saw it all! In between mother freedom ringing her bell Jeff would answer all the questions any city slicker with central air conditioning would ask. This man was an endless fountain of knowledge, not the type u throw coins in to. Which reminds me TIP UR GUIDES AND DRIVERS! Jeff was instrumental in making this river trip a memory of a lifetime and not just a day. He and Ollie are both assets that will keep consumers coming back like if u fed Japanese snapper to a stray cat. Amazing fun on the river! We just returned from an awesome family vacation in and around Wyoming. We opted against the white water ride and instead chose the scenic ride, so as to avoid getting wet. And, in the end, our son dunked his head in and our daughter and I jumped in and floated along, holding on to the raft. The water was cool, but we didn't shiver at all until we were back on land and in the bus. Molly was our guide... she knows the river well, and was an excellent host. And she grew up in St. Louis! Along the way, Molly pointed out - River pelicans - Eagles (hard to see in the sky in the photo, but that's what we point to "toward the left" - two bald eagles - eagle nest (on the right toward the end) - times when the water was deep enough to jump in - we were the first of the season to jump in! The other family was nice and fun, and thanks to their Dad for assisting our son get me back into the boat each time. The Snake River headwaters are in both Yellowstone National Park and Grand Tetons National Park, and the river flows south through Wyoming and into Idaho and Washington and then into the Columbia River. Molly shared that the winter, 2017 provide the most snow seen in years, and that resulted in significant melting and flooding.... but not quite like we have seen in Missouri recently. The Snake River was at a record 30,000 cfps / cubic feet per second a couple weeks before our visit and was still at 24,000 cfps this day. The River did have its fair share of trees and other things floating from the flood, but there was seemingly little property damage. The River is shallow in spots, and we could hear the water moving the rocks at the bottom of the river, we were listening to erosion happening inches below us, as the rocks rolled and smoothed and made their eventual way to becoming sand. An amazing experience. This is definitely a must do when in Jackson, Wyoming! The staff at the shop is very friendly and our guide Fitz was totally awesome. We went here in May and there was some recent snow, and the weather was below 60F. If the weather is too cold, they will provide you with wet suits and all the necessary gear to experience rafting comfortably. I would recommend to sit in the front part of the raft. Water levels are higher and more dangerous in May due to recent snow melt but a little calmer as summer comes. They do not allow children around may due to the possible dangerous conditions. So inquire first before booking around that time! Don't do anything stupid and you will have tons of fun! read more

This is our third time visiting, and it didn't disappoint. We brought our 5 year old with us this time, and she had an absolute blast on the "classic tour." Some white water, some calm, and a lot of fun. Our guide Aaron was fantastic, and made our tour even more exciting. We saw at least 7 eagles along the way, and even had a chance to take a plunge in the river. The staff at check in were very accommodating, and even had free donuts for breakfast. Fantastic experience on a small boat trip with our wonderful guide Jeff. Loved the 90 min trip with fun facts and information about the area along the way. It was later in the season so water levels were low but we still had a fun mix of class 2 and 3 rapids. The entire team was very friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend doing the very reasonably priced wet suit rentals. Water never goes above the 60s so having the wet suit allowed us to comfortably swim and enjoy ourselves more. read more

I had asked a travel agent to find a long term white river boat trip. The longer they are on the river the first they go down. We wanted a small boat, more action. We had an early trip because we had another advantage that day for dinner. We had paid for the trip well in advance so there should be no problems.. Well , when you are in the park there is no service. The afternoon day before as we are driving across gods country with no service, They change the trip to a afternoon ride. Leave a message that we can not get. VERY POOR SERVICE. When I called the Mad River Boat Trip Company the woman with very snotty customer service says what do you want me to do.. The 8.5 mile Snake River Rafting trip is beautiful and fun - it is not particularly exciting with class 1 and 2 rapids in late September. Well there may have been one class 3 at the Great Kahuna Falls, where we were hit with a wall of water and everyone got wet. One of the best parts of the activity was the people who work there. They were communicative with email before the trip, explaining what we needed to bring and how to prepare for a half day and maximize our time and fun on the water. While we were getting ready to go out, the office crew was very helpful and the guides were a wealth of knowledge once we hit the water. It was really cold the day we went and the water temperature was cold too. Mad River performed a calculation to determine safety and offered everyone in our party a wet suit, booties and gloves gratis. Top notch, freshly laundered, clean. Very Nice. Mad River makes for great family fun or a superb team building event. read more

Myself and 4 of my family members chose to do the half day white water rafting trip with a cookout lunch. We were supposed to be on a small boat but when we got down to the river to launch it was clear that the boat was not small and not all members of our party would be able to row the entire time, which was the opposite of what was communicated to us. If we wanted to go on a scenic float we would have booked that instead. We were really looking forward to the lunch based on all the positive reviews, but it was terrible. We were served grilled cheese, tomato soup, caesar salad, cantaloupe drizzled with honey and some store bought dessert. It seemed like they forgot they had to make lunch that day and ran to the store last minute to throw something together. Very disappointing. Not to mention one of my family members is vegan and couldn't even eat anything!! She had indicated so on her registration form and even called to confirm and was reassured that there would be plenty for her to eat. Another girl on a different boat had the same issue. Overall the whole trip felt rushed and definitely not worth the $90+ per person. We spent more time driving to the boat launch, eating lunch and driving back to Mad River headquarters than we did rafting. The only positive thing about the rafting experience was our guide, Woolley. read more

We had a great experience with Mad River! They have a huge selection of wet suits for adults and kids. Some are two piece and some are one piece. We went in mid August so the water wasn't too scary but we did get wet and it was a lot of fun! Our guide knew a lot about the history of the area too which we enjoyed learning. On the river we came upon a raft that flipped and our guide made sure they were okay. It was an unguided raft and the people hit a rock and flipped. I haven't been on a white water trip down the snake in several years. Having several family members out to our house in JH we thought it a good idea to organize a trip. In the past we have gone with several different outfits, but I can comfortably say that Mad River is absolutely the best in the Valley. Now the thing about white water trips is that a lot of your experience depends on two things, when in the season you go and your raft guide. Each guide has their particular routes they like to hit which can translate into how "wet" you get. The wetter the better I say when it comes to white water. We had a guide named Wayne and he absolutely rocked. He gauged the skill end experience level of all people in our raft and positioned people really well around the raft. We were able to generate a lot of speed going into the rapids which translated into big splashes. the other great thing about Mad River is that they do not over load their rafts. Crews are limited to 8 people which affords each person a comfortable, un-squished, trip down the river. Weighting a raft down does not guarantee you will get bigger rapids. Speed is a big factor as well. A knowledgeable guide, a comfortable ride, and very easy sign up at the start make Mad River the best in the Teton Valley. read more

Terrible for large groups! Let me start out by saying that the guides and rafting itself was great. However, if you are contemplating bringing a large group you may want to look for another event. We had a wedding party of 26 people over 2 days and Mad River requires a online waver for all participants to be filled out beforehand (we had some older members who aren't savvy enough to be able to fill it out online). It's this process that they used to bill us for unused seats. If you're unable to get all your group members coordinated to fill this out online before the trip, they will bill you for any missing people. In our case, we had all our waivers filled out, called to confirm they were complete and even added people to our reservation and then were billed for missing people (even though there were enough people to need a 2nd boat!) Really soured a great trip and I'd recommend either another boating company or a different activity for large groups. read more

Now I have never been white water rafting before so while I was out in Jackson, we decided to make a day of it. First we arrived at Mad River HQ and signed our releases and were given the option to rent wet suits. This is highly recommended for people who don't want to get cold. While I have never been white water rafting, in the Marine Corps I was fortunate enough to have experienced small boat recovery and insertion and opted not to get the wet suit. For those that have never worn one, they are uncomfortable and heat up real quick. They also don't keep the water out so I opted to pass on the wet suit and I had my own booties so I was ok. From their our bus took us to the drop site and we were oriented with our guide. We were a huge group so we were able to get on boats with our friends. "Mowhawk" the name we gave our guide, was a great sport and allowed us to really enjoy our adventure. The river was running high so our trip last a little under two hours. This is definitely a must but be aware, white water rafting can be dangerous. During our trip, I was tossed two rows back and another buddy was tossed from the boat. But if you listen to your guide and travel with people you can trust you will be fine. read more

I've done a lot of whitewater rafting, but my trip with Mad River stood out from most of them. I called to make reservations and the lady who answered, Kaitlyn (sp?) was courteous, knowledgeable, and really helpful. She set me and my family up for a half day trip, and once done I recieved an email with a link to waiver forms that we could sign electronically; nice touch that allowed me to avoid doing paperwork the morning of the trip. In the days preceding my trip, I received a couple of emails with important reminders about where to be and when, and most importantly what to wear. The facility was fantastic - it was more of a showroom than boat house. My wife was able to pick up a cheap pair of sunglasses, and they rented us the footwear (wetsuit booties) that we needed for the trip. The breakfast they provided consisted of apples, a small breakfast burrito, instant oatmeal, pastries/muffins and coffee. It was just ok, but far beyond what most provide. Our trip occurred late in the season on a predictably mild section of the Snake River. The rapids were as advertised and were perfect for our 7 year old daughters first rafting trip. Our guide, KC was about as perfect as they come. He knew the river well, and educated us on the local wildlife that we encountered along the way (river otters, Osprey, Eagles, etc.). He filled the quiet time between rapids by asking about each of our trip members' interests... "Raquel, what kinds of things do you like to do?" Almost every answer would launch a conversation that would fill several minutes before he'd move on to the next person. Excellent guide (and my wife thought he was cute but I didn't see it)! Even the bus driver that drove us to the put-in spot and back was an great guide if you happened to be sitting within earshot of her as she called out things to see (Osprey nests and a 100 year old, 1 ton eagles nest). Overall this was an excellent experience during every phase and I highly recommend this rafting company. I only wish they had operations in California where I live! read more

Great time!!!! We took the scenic raft ride down the Snake River. What a great way to spend the afternoon. The scerary was amazing. Shared the raft with a small group of people; small enough for the two families to have a conversation while rafting. Our guide; Jimmy was skilled and knowledgeable. Jimmy had lots of good stories and encouraged conversation during the rafting trip. This is perfect for 55+ years young, and for parents with children that are not old enough to white water raft. Lots of fun! I went with three other adults, a 12-year-old and 9-year-old - all of whom had a blast. There were several opportunities for us to jump out of the raft and float in calm water. Our guide did a good job of instructing us when to paddle and covering safety. He also gave us paddling tips. The guides were super-friendly and very knowledgeable. They've gone through extensive training. We also did the dinner cruise which definitely exceeded expectations. This was perhaps some of the best food we had during our time in the area. We had some cobbler, glazed carrots, catfish, jalapeño biscuits, fennel and more. Definitely worth it. read more

This was by far a fun and exciting outing had by everyone!!!! Booking was simple, as it could be done online or over the phone. If you book online and choose the 8:30 am trip, you can get 20% off. I highly recommend this since this is when you are most likely to see the most wildlife, plus then you have the rest of your day to do as you wish (but to each their own). There are different options for rafting trips with different costs. We chose the classic, as 3 of the 4 of us had no prior rafting experience. The guides are knowledgeable and very friendly- they share info. throughout the trip, as well as work to get to know you. The cost was reasonable, about $220 for four of us. I would highly suggest getting at least a wetsuit top. The water is 57 degrees and you will get wet. Expect to get wet, but it will be well worth it! read more

Great River rafting company. They provided everyone with free wetsuits due to high and cold water, very nice! The staff we're very friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient! Our bus driver Jim was great and our guide Fitz was very knowledgeable and a great rivers guide. The equipment was is excellent shape and of high quality. The trip was a little short and I personally would have liked higher and faster rapids, but with that said the river is what it is! Only my second white water rafting experience but it was wonderful in every way. First, being early in the season it was a bit cold and they had all the equipment we needed, wet suits, booties, and the usual life jackets at no extra cost. Our guide KC and his junior partner Will were great, fun friendly and gave us a sense of comfort and confidence. We took a second, scenic, trip with Mad River as well. It certainly wasn't as exciting but we saw several bald eagles, a moose with calf, osprey... And it was perfect for my folks who are older and not ready for the adventure of white water. Again Mad River had all the equipment we needed. It was a bit cool with threatening clouds when we took off. They had great rain gear for each of us in case we needed it. Mad River is conveniently located on the highway just west of Jackson; almost walking distance from our motel. We arrived on a rainy August morning and were quickly and efficiently outfitted with wetsuits and booties, bussed to the Snake river and turned loose in a tiny tiny raft with guide 'Fitz'. This was our first rafting trip and of all the activities we availed ourselves with on our five day Jackson Hole/Yellowstone summer vacation, it was the best. As fifty year old adults, we appreciated the knowledge Fitz was able to impart; about the river and the habitat, flora and fauna surrounding, about rafting/kayaking as they relate to river hydraulics, about the town and the best places to eat! Fitz was right on in each category. Tiny Tiny Boats are a must. We watched the larger rafts, loaded with tourists as they made their way down river and over the rapids; boring! Our boat was giving us a wild ride and we appreciated Fitz making sure we hit the largest waves as we rafted over Lunch Counter, the Big Kahuna and more. Did we get wet? Yes! Soaked head to toe.
