For most reviews, you review the dining portion of the restaurant... But this is specifically for their ingenious thoughtfulness to the CARRYOUT patrons. Mad Mex has ensured that carryout is no longer a burden for patrons, that they can quickly accommodate orders without burdening their own staff, and widely advertise it as an option. They literally busted out a wall and added a door directly to the designated carryout counter of the bar. Rather than waiting in line with seating, telling the hostess that you are picking up an order, generally being sent to the bar to find an available way to flag down the bartender to pay, and then waiting for someone to go check in the kitchen if your order is ready. You now have... - a designated door on the front of the building which is well-labeled as Takeout Orders - a portioned off part of the counter dedicated to interactions with the bartenders for picking up - a place for the staff to place orders ready at the counter rather than waiting back in the kitchen. I love it! Takeout is a breeze!!!

It's always sad to see an old favorite change... and not in a good way. I've been coming to this Mad Mex (and occasionally other locations) for years. I've come for lunch or dinner and most often for happy hour in the bar. Sometimes as a party of two and sometimes with a large group. Unfortunately we find ourselves coming less and less. The service is nowhere near what it used to be. It can be hit or miss depending on who you get of course and there has definitely been some turnover. It's not uncommon to wait a while before even getting to place a drink order. There have been multiple occasions where we waited 15-20 minutes and nothing so have resorted to getting up from our table to order at the bar. It doesn't always work to flag someone down and sometimes they walk right past without even looking or checking on you even when there's a table full of empty glasses. Last time we were there the food came out cool and the tofu had the wrong sauce. We were hungry and had been waiting so still ate it. When the food was dropped off we asked for ketchup for our fries. Nothing. Finally got up to go to the bar and ask for it. Several times the check has been wrong and we have had to ask and they correct it. Also for months and months the stall in the women's room wasn't being held together properly. The toilet paper holder fell open and the wall shook which is when I realized the screws that connect it were mostly missing. I made sure to notify someone and that is something that should have been fixed quickly in my opinion. It finally is fixed now. The food sometimes is still really pretty good. Happy hour deals are great but the beer list definitely leaves something to be desired. There's a decent amount of space to hang out with a group. We have been coming here for so many years and had some great experiences but it just isn't what it once was.

This is our go to spot for a burrito. My favorite gobblerito is back right now. We were seated promptly by the manager on duty and waited on promptly. The atmosphere is always inviting. Upbeat music was playing.

The food is always great and so consistent. Plus this location serves chimichangas (my personal favorite ) however shadyside does not. There were even a few brand new options like the fried chicken tacos. This is my daughter's favorite place for their tofu salad and vegan chipotle ranch. Big azz margs are always a crowd pleaser. Service was always amazing and a very small wait time.

Ordered Mad Mex to go (I do this often lol) and got my usual steak tacos and the birria quesadilla. Both are always 10/10 and never really miss. I usually get jersey chips too - they have a great queso and ranch! Love to dine in or eat out at this big restaurant group!

Ate all my food besides from the celery cuz yuck!

So for an appetizer we got some chips, queso, black bean dip and guacamole which we usually get and the queso was delish as always and I don't like guacamole so I didn't eat that, my parents said that the black bean dip was different than normal but I've never tried it so I wouldn't know. I got buffalo wild boneless wings which I get every time because I will never ever change my order, I got blue cheese dressing and extra sauce. It was totally epic. I also got some fries and found out I didn't like them, which I LOVE fries so that was pretty odd. I think they are too fried, like they are so crunchy which is better than soggy but like whatever. They waitress had a super cute Christmas tree on her head. Overall experience 10/10.

About a month ago I had issue at this restaurant and sent a lengthy email but never heard back. Last week I had another issue so I'm posting both here since management doesn't respond to emails. I hit this Mad Mex for takeout on the way out of town to a few destinations. Last month I placed a pretty large order (almost $100) online. Because the online modification system is lacking things like "no tortilla" for salads and "sauce on the side" for tacos, I had to call in to make modifications for food allergies. The woman who answered the phone couldn't be bothered to let me finish my sentence and told me to "call back later because they were busy". I explained about the food allergies and she begrudgingly wrote down what I said. When I arrived, I stood at the bar for almost 5 minutes with no employee behind the bar. When someone brought the food out, everything I requested was not actioned. Tortillas on an order for a gluten free person. Sauce on things. Forgot the salad dressing. I caught what I could but some things were discovered when we cut food open. Last week I called to place a takeout order to grab before I hopped on the turnpike. To be honest, I didn't want to give them my money but the food options in Monroeville are mostly junk. I called 3 different times and nobody picked up. Then I called Greentree to ask if Monroeville was closed. The manager put me on hold, called Monroeville AND the manager and couldn't reach anyone (5 mins of hold). I called Monroeville back about 5 mins later and someone magically answered! I placed my order and when I got there, there were 2 (2!) customers. Why was nobody answering? Definitely didn't have anything to do with the employee eating Chik Fil A in the back booth on her phone or the entire pan of cake they had for some kind of employee party. I don't tip on takeout anymore no matter where I'm calling and Mad Mex was the main impetus for this. About 50% of the time something is wrong or missing with my order but in 2025, my expectations are so low, what can you do.

Normally, we do not go to chain restaurants. Big Burrito is one of the exceptions. Mad Mex is always a great meal. House margaritas along with the salsas & chips are fresh & flavorful. Tonight, we had the pick a dippa, which was house made chips with your choice of 3 salsas or dips. Our party of 4 had 4 different meals. They were The Big Burrito, The Chicken Chimi, Super Mad Mex Birria Burrito & the Birria tacos with waffle fries. For dessert, we enjoyed a platter of 4 chocolate hazelnut churros. The service was average, and the restaurant needed some sweeping after a busy dinner shift. The decor is always fun and the food is always worth the trip

If you're in the mood for authentic Mexican food, then look elsewhere. That's not a bad thing though as I friggin' love Mad Mex and try to visit when I return to visit the Pittsburgh area. They do a different take on Mexican cuisine that's not authentic, but so good! Americanized Mexican at it's finest. My absolute favorite item on their menu is their Southwest Wings... these green, flavorful wings were one of the first things I ever ordered at the North Hills location and that sauce is so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend. Their burritos are massive and square and filling AF! They were veggie friendly for years before it was trendy. They have some delicious Tofu wraps, beans and other veggie goodies on which that southwest green wing sauce flavors up quite nicely. For thanksgiving, they have their Gobblerito which is a turkey/stuffing/potato filled behemoth of a meal with cranberry sauce to slather on top. It's like thanksgiving on a plate. Wait, that's not a good analogy, but you get my drift. They do occasionally offer this over the summer as a promotion too to get your turkey fix in before you're sick of seeing turkey everywhere. The service at this location is a bit slow. The waitress barely stopped at our table for drink refills and such. The food takes a long time to come out, but it's worth it. Don't go if you're in a hurry, but go if you're hungry.

Happy hour starts at 4:30 daily. Great sit down dining option with colorful artwork and a neat seating setup. A little dark inside. Bar. Indoor and outdoor seating available. We ordered wings, a taco dish, side of cheese, chimichanga dish and mad Mex bowl with 2 margaritas and a soft drink was around $80-90 bucks.

Mad Mex Quesadilla

Mad Mex is a favorite in my family so we come here on a semi-annual basis. I arrived at 11 and sat at the bar. the staff was friendly and accommodating of my complicated gift card order and took care of it while I was waiting for my food. I tried the Mad Mex Quesadilla and it was quite good. I went with the steak option and the meat was cooked just right, not too chewy. It was a smaller entrée in general, but worked well for a small lunch.

Spicy Mad Mex Burrito with tofu

The kids menu is an amazing deal: entree, carrots and celery, drink, and a small brownie sundae for only $6.50! All other prices were reasonable but meals do not include rice and beans, and chips and salsa are not complementary. Many vegetarian protein options including portobello mushroom, crispy tofu, and Morningstar chorizo.

Currently, there is a Mexican restaurant, Chinese restaurant, kids party/play business, a bowling ally the Jonnet Building (which hosts a variety of businesses including an events venue, nail and hair salons) and more. The biggest downfalls are that the parking lot isn't all that well maintained and has an odd design. There are potholes everywhere, and some of them are really large. The parking spots are also at odd angles that people seem to be confused about. You have to be driving the right direction to get into the spaces, and sometime a car will spend a bunch of time trying to maneuver into the space instead of just driving around and coming in at the right angle. If you have to exit onto Center, good luck. It is a really busy street and cars don't generally want to let you in, especially during peak hours.

There has been a change over of stores and restaurants over time here. Once housing a Office Depot and Lone Star Steakhouse they have been replaced by a fitness center and Mexican restaurant. To note, behind a majority of this strip of stores is a bowling alley as well. However, even with the changeover of stores and restaurants this plaza has seemed to survive over time. The Jonnet Building houses offices, doctors, and a few other things. There is an Enterprise Car Rental spot as well. This sits at a very busy intersection in Monroeville which feeds the plaza with customers on a steady basis. Can't really categorize this as a mall, but it does fill a shopping need as well as a service need.

By the time I got up there, they were out of vegetables, steak and sofritas. No biggie on the steak and veggies, that was for me. But I was taking the sofritas bowl for my daughter. Brandon told me they were out and offered me chicken or chipotle honey chicken. I chose the chicken for her, but knew she wasn't keen on it. I didn't say anything, just went with it. All of a sudden, Brandon said, hold on, I'm going to get you sofritas. . . . And he did! I've not had anyone go out of their way to provide that level of customer service in a long time! My order is almost always ready 30-40 minutes after the scheduled pickup time, which completely defeats the purpose of ordering ahead. They also don't seem to use the pickup shelving for online orders, so the only way to get your food is to ask an employee. Most of the time they either blame another employee, say they don't know, or just walk away without helping. To make matters worse, I've personally seen cooks handling food without gloves, which was very concerning from a cleanliness standpoint. Overall, customer service, efficiency, and food handling standards here seriously need improvement. I would personally give a ZERO star.
