Excellent authentic Mexican cuisine and atmosphere. Located on Route 22 in the Jonnet Plaza. Great and quick service. As soon as we sat down at the bar. Our server was very friendly, helpful and attentive. Excellent lunch time menu with great prices and portions. Food came out hot and fast. Delicious flavor, easy to tell fresh ingredients were used. Had both red and green hot sauces. Rice and beans were tasty and cooked perfectly. Nice size parking lot in the plaza. The front could use some fresh paint. Looks a little weathered. Not sure what a few things were on the menu but our server did explain them well. I'm willing to give em a try on the next visit. The Modelo on tap was cold and tasty. The margarita was perfect. We came here for a bite to eat and some drinks. When we walked in. It looked so dead that we didn't even see any employees. There were only two customers at the bar. Normally when you walk into a restaurant you're greater by an employee right away. Here that was not the case. We were standing there for maybe 5 minutes before an employee came up to us and asked for just two. No hello or welcome to El Campesino. Nothing! But, the other thing was. You see four of us talking together. You're going to assume we are a party of two and not ask how many. So we are finally seated and mind you we just were seated. The waitress comes and tries to start taking our order. We haven't even opened the menu yet. I tell her then could we just have 4 waters for now to get her to give us a moment to look at the dang menu. She brings our water right away and then ask her what do you want to order. We don't say anything because we are still physically looking at the menu. Then she ask you need more time or what. Since I was looking at the drinks menu I ask her if they make espresso martini. She tells me "I don't know. What ever is in the menu is what we have." So at this point she doesn't even know what is on the menu. Not impressed by her attitude and impatience with us we decide to just move to the bar. At the bar. The bartender takes forever to even greet us and ask us if we want water or anything. We all decided to get some drinks. My husband got a margarita and I the Mexican coffee. On both of the drinks it was so weak. Plus, the bartender didn't even seem like he knew what he was doing. Very disappointed. I don't recommend this place and I'm not one to tell people not to go. The first sign to turn around was when you walk in and there was no one there. Came here on taco Tuesday! They had a menu online for taco Tuesday but was not offered any special when we got there. The service was fine. The helper didn't speak much English so asking for stuff was difficult. The waiter finally came over to see what we needed. It wasn't busy enough but we did see the server much. He brought us our food and the little things we asked for! The menu was a little confusing because I thought the combos all come with rice and beans but it didn't even though it said it comes with it. I just have mis read it. Food was average! Another birthday, another visit to El Campesino. His birthday, his choice. And we love the food here. As usual, I got the Huevos Mexicano. I love that plate, and the tortillas are the best we've had since we moved away from San Antonio, TX. And, as usual, it didn't disappoint. Son got the Enchiladas Mexicanas again. Hey! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! The server warned him that it was spicy, but that's what he likes. Kiddo got the nachos with beef. Menu has that listed as an appetizer, but it was pretty big. She got it for her main course meal and couldn't finish it. I also got a margarita. Server asked what size I wanted. I've never had to choose a size for a margarita, but I chose small. I figured if it was really small, I could always get a second one. But it wasn't small. It was BIG for a small! And it tasted great. They don't skimp on the alcohol, but it wasn't too alcohol heavy that you couldn't taste anything else. But it was BIG! The big surprise came when at the end of the meal when they snuck up behind my son and put a sombrero on his head then sang to him in Spanish for his birthday. We stopped in for a late dinner and were promptly seated. The waiter was quick to take our orders and bring out the margaritas (they were a little weak for my taste, for the size and empty stomach, I should have felt a buzz). There were 6 of us and he definitely kept up with the drink refills. Only 1 salsa and one basket of chips for the table though. After ordering, the food started arriving mega fast. I've had to wait longer at Taco Bell for my food. It was all hot and fresh. The chimichangas were not crispy and might have well just been small burritos. This was $2 more than most of the combos which had more food. The fajitas were large and they charge $2 extra for cheese. The chile relleno was large and delicious. The bean tostada was one of the best things I tried (odd, but it was). The Churros were amazing with an apple filling and ice cream and chocolate dipping sauce. I probably would have suggested caramel knowing they had apple in them. The service was excellent and we were in and out very quickly. I'd go back as I like the flavor of their beef and chicken. It's super moist and delicious. There is a lot to choose from, especially with the combo meals. They do have an a la carte menu so you can just get what you want as well. The portions are hit and miss, so once you know what to get, you may be happier with your portion size. read more

Came for lunch with some coworkers during the week. It was pretty empty but they took good care of us. I wasn't really impressed with the menu options, though they were numerous it was difficult to distinguish the difference between menu options. Went for dinner yesterday. I ordered the Super Burrito, 12" chicken and beer burrito. I cut into it and half of it was canned pulled chicken. Dry. No seasoning added to it. Dried up canned pulled chicken in a Mexican restaurant.. come on now. And then the other half was cheap taco bell quality "beef". The burrito was half chicken and half beef. The meat wasn't even mixed in with each other. If you look at the front of the menu, it shows an image of grilled and sliced chicken. I didn't ask for canned chicken in my burrito. Margaritas were the special for happy hour-- $4.99 for a small glass with no alcohol in it. I left with a stomach ache from all of the sweet lime juice in my margarita. I wish I had taken a photo but I was too hungry to complain or snap a picture of this embarrassment of a burrito. I will NEVER be returning to this place. read more

We came here on Sunday after church with a large group. There were 14 of us. The food was wonderful and we devoured three bowls of cheese dip! The service is great and they're able to sit us down in the back and there's usually not much wait. We come here probably once a month. This time as nice as several other families came with us, and it was good to sit and visit. I recently started not eating cheese and I got the fajitas which were great. My husband got the Pollo gringo. Our kids got chicken fingers and fries and a cheese quesadilla. Everything was great! There's usually some nice quiet music playing and it is a good atmosphere to sit and talk, which we appreciate. This is part of the reason we come here is to visit our friends while eating. Primarily I do not like Tex mex, and am very fond of Mexican food from San Diego and the 1-30 miles roughly below it. Went here two times - they are never packed. Very easy to find a parking spot. First time, some of our food was cold. No love for the sauce. Second time - service was meh, just as the food. Was sad about it. So much closer to our home. Sauce is mediocre. Period. I'm not sure why El Campesino only has 3 starts. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Monroeville. I've been here numerous times and my meal never disappoints. I usually get one of the combination plates as those give you the option to have exactly what you want without paying extra for sides. I do want to add that the parking situation is not great. Not bad enough that I'd deduct a star, but the lot is hard to get into. It's also confusing as there are 2 do not enter signs where you would think of as the entrance. I blame it on the location and the traffic in Monroeville. Either way it does not deter me from coming and enjoying a nice sit down meal. read more

Being that I have several authentic Mexican restaurants close by I feel pretty lucky. While out one night with my wife we decided to have a date night at El Campesino. Since it was date night I started off with a Mango Margarita. It was HUGE and so refreshing. It tasted just like a fresh ripe mango. One is definitely all you need. For our entree we went with the Grilled Cazuelada Dinner For Two which consists of beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo, cooked with onions, tomatoes and bell peppers. Served with rice, refried beans, lettuce, tomato, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo and your choice of flour or corn tortillas. It is a lot of food for the money and the perfect amount for a couple. The beef, chicken, shrimp and chorizo were all cooked to perfection! Juicy and absolutely delicious! Needless to say that we left stuffed and had plenty of leftovers for lunch and dinner the following day. I don't get all of the bad reviews as the food is always superb and service is always excellent for us as we have been several times. Very disappointed today. Typically, I'm all for El Camp, but today was a bust. Its Cinco de Mayo, on a Friday, got it. Gonna be hella busy. However, when we tried to call in a lunchtime order, there was no answer. We tried many many times. Then, I go in to place a to-go order, and the wait time is 30-40 minutes. Again, Cinco de Mayo, on a Friday. Did they not plan for this? Especially for a crazy lunch rush. Typically, you sit down, the person takes your order, and you have it in 5 minutes. I'd really have to wait 30-40 minutes...? Maybe this is all my unrequited hunger talking. I do like the place - servers and food. They are willing to accommodate me if I order something and "Vegetarianize" it. The frozen drinks do look appealing. I guess El Camp is gonna have to get my 3 stars today, and hope I revisit soon, when less crowded, so that I may revise my appraisal in the future. read more
