This has to be my favorite Mad Mex. We were welcomed at the door by a very friendly staff, seated immediately, and waited on by McKenzie, a lovely, amazing server. One of the managers, Steve, stopped by and asked about our visit. He stuck around and chatted with us for several minutes. We recently moved to the area and have discovered this little gem on Cannonsburg Lake. The restaurant itself is spacious and comfortable. Can't wait until spring really gets here to be able to sit outdoors with the view. My husband had his favorite, the chimichanga, and I tried the southwestern bowl. So much food! Ambience is really cool. Fully decorated with the Mexican heritage. Also cool seating area outside on Canonsburg lake. My favorite place to get a burrito in Pittsburgh. I always get the steak one. They are gigantic... probably can't even lift it up to eat it may need a fork and knife sadly but also... happily. My actual favorite thing in the menu is the chips and cheese dip. It's got a little bit of heat but for most people that heat is mostly flavor. We went the last night my parents were in town so they could check out the view of Canonsburg Lake. My mom absolutely loved the decor and she could not stop taking pictures. Her favorites were the murals in the woman's room and the mural around the fire place. We were seated promptly and our waiter came shortly after. Our waiter was great!! About every other time we find ourselves at this Mad Mex I leave a bit mad myself. This time it took 20 minutes for anyone to acknowledge we had even been seated and 30 for us to have our orders taken. Another 35 for our taco salad and gobblerito to arrive. At least they were tasty. The last time we were there service was fast, friendly and efficient. The time before that it took quite a while to get our food, then one of our three orders came out incorrectly. Server offered to have it made correctly but by the time it came out, everyone else was finished eating so we packed it to go. Mad Mex is a normal spot for us to stop. The Herbivore Tofu Tacos are always my top pick, and I am normally extremely happy with them. This visit was different. Love Mad Mex and this spot is my favorite. The setup overlooking the lake makes for a cool dining experience, especially in the summer months. The workers also do a really good job here. Our server on our most recent trip, Chris was great. The salsas, guac, and queso are very good. The black bean dip might be my favorite app though. For my meal I usually go with Buffalo chicken tacos or the tofu wrapture (Buffalo tofu wrap). Both have incredible flavor. Their waffle fries and homemade ranch are also must haves. read more

I created this yelp account to review this Mad Mex so no one has to put up with what I did. I ordered takeout via DoorDash (option on MadMex website. I go to pick up 30 minute later and the bar tender tells me one item isn't available, would I like something else. I ask why I wasn't notified and he immediately says "I'm just the messenger, would you like to talk with the manager?" Unfortunately I said yes, and proceeded to ask the manager Jeanine why I wasn't notified. She rudely and smugly blames me and DoorDash, and continues to ask what I want, as if I'm the problem. I wait 15 more minutes only for the bartender to tell me the other item from my order as well as the replacement item I ordered is also not available. I ask Jeanine again why I wasn't just notified as DoorDash had nothing to do with the bartender not letting me know sooner that the second item I ordered isn't available, and she said "it's cinco de mayo weekend," and "I can't manifest food for you," while making an exaggerated hand gesture. On top of that, she tells me I need to call DoorDash to get my refund. I ask why she can't call or notify them for me since they're the ones who messed up, and I said that this was insanity, and she began to mockingly say "it's insane." She added "because she has a business to run," as her and about 8 other workers stand around an almost empty restaurant. This is the most bizarre and worst display of customer service I have ever seen. I never got an apology for twice wasting my time, no "how can we make it right?" I got yelled at and mocked because I dared ask why I wasn't notified food was out of stock 30 minutes prior and then again while I waited at the bar. While I feel like Mad Mex is your standard Tex-mex restaurant, it's my husbands favorite, so we frequent here often. We especially love that they have many vegan/dairy-free options, which isn't usually the case at a Mexican restaurant. They also have a great list of specialty margaritas that are definitely worth the price. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and we enjoy the vibes sitting outside, overlooking the lake. Service can be hit or miss, but it's usually pretty good. read more

I always have a good experience at this Mad Med location but it definitely gets busy on the weekends. I really like sitting in the back room outside when it's nice out and all of the lights are on. It's a great time! The food has always been good for me and I love that there are so many vegan options. The herbivore tofu tacos have been my go to recently. Take out was very delayed (understandably) on a very busy Friday night. However, the gentleman working at the host stand was very rude--mocked me when I asked for an update on timing, just stared and laughed. We have eaten Mexican all over the country and Ashley have a favor in the Erie PA I will not eat at Mad Max again but would sit out on the deck and have margaritas and chips. Can't believe they actually charge you for chips with a meal. The original salsa was very cold and served in a mound. The burrito I had was short on both shrimp and spinach. The menu sounded amazing. Expensive but I felt like the food would be delicious according to their description. For instance the rice, it said it would have amazing flavor with lime, garlic, cilantro and other ingredients I can't remember. Got the rice. No flavor whatsoever. Not even salt. Straight up more tasteless than steamed rice. Where was the flavor!? My husband and I got some nachos to try with birria meat. The nachos were huge! Which is good since they were like $14ish dollars. It tasted really good except the over powering cinnamon in the birria meat. It made the dish sweet... and the cheese wasn't melted and the meat was cold. They weren't very busy and mostly saw teens standing around. Our waitress was really sweet though! She took the rice back and took it off the bill. I've never sent anything back in my life and she made me feel okay about it. I got birria quesadillas and he got a huge burrito with two kinds of meat. My food again had the over powering cinnamon. It made it sweet and not savory. The consommé was more like a mole and it wasn't good. There were pickled onions in the meat too which would have been delicious if the damn cinnamon didn't already make it too sweet. Also $14 dish and you get 3 mediumish sized pieces of quesadillas. The sour cream and guacamole are extra but needed. My husband liked his burrito. It was huge and looked good for $15. It was supposed to come with rice but didn't. Which is okay since it was gross anyway. Honestly for $52 I was expecting more... I honestly don't think we will be back. The only saving grace was our waitress, she was amazing! read more

I had an order to go that I picked up and was home within 15 minutes. The order was 4 tacos with beans and rice. The meat container was not even luke warm and was very dry and tasteless. The beans and rice were the same. The only topping supplied was a small container of lettuce. No salsa or cheese or other toppings were provided , nor were any napkins or utensils provided. It seemed as if this is what a leftover would look like after 2 days in the refrigerator. Do not go here unless you have extremely low expectations. They have no pride in their product. I think the 3rd visit to this location but I believe a notch below the usual Mad Mex tradition. First off the location is a great one, right on a lake. I ordered one of their seasonal Hatch chile menu items that I always look forward to, this time the burrito. A you see in the photo, the burrito was served on a plate with a little cup of Hatch salsa and like a one inch piece of celery with the wilted leaf. I asked the bartender what that was all about and she just chuckled and move the cup to cover the little scrap of celery. The burrito itself was good as well as their Great Lakes Nosferatu draft! I came here with a group of 7. We had a nice spot to sit that was pretty much our own space and this was really nice to feel as though we were alone since we were celebrating a friend. It was really loud in the restaurant so that made it a little hard to carry on a conversation. All of our food that came out look wonderful. It was nice to know that they had many vegan options for my friend. I ordered the chicken quesadilla (which I forgot to take a picture because I was so hungry!). This was really good but messy to eat. Normally quesadillas aren't so messy. I also ordered a mango fruit margarita. It wasn't for me but that doesn't make it bad. I also tried my friends waffle fries. Yumm! We all really enjoyed our time here but we did actually end up standing outside the restaurant for a bit because it was so hard to hear inside with the noise. I will definitely come back. read more

We've eaten at Mad Mex many times, at many of their locations. The Canonsburg location has been our favorite because they seem to do a better job, for the most part. We wanted to have dinner there this evening but were told there was a 15 minute wait. My husband went to the restroom and he said there were many empty tables. I don't understand keeping customers standing and waiting when they could be sitting and looking at the menu. On top of that, the child at the front desk absolutely refused to take into consideration my repeated requests for her to raise her voice over the din in the bar so I could hear the questions she was asking me. She seemed to take some kind of perverse pleasure in me asking her to repeat herself over and over again. We eventually left for better food, better service and better prices at Los Bajitos. We have came to this location probably 30 times and the service and food is always great. I typically order the fajitas but also enjoy a good quesadilla from time to time. If you love fries, order the waffle fries. They are some of my favorite fries in the area. They also have the "good ranch" that I love to dip them in. The red sangria is also my favorite drink to order. What I love about this drink is that it is consistently good. Some restaurants add too much juice over alcohol, but Mad Mex continues to get this drink right each time! There is also ample parking space. The lot fills up pretty fast on the weekend, but we have never had an issue finding a spot. Tip: try and sit at the tables closest to the lake when the weather is nice. They open up the windows and you have a great view of the lake and surrounding area. read more

Place was decently packed and loud on a Friday around 5. Wife had taco trio and they were pretty good. I have a mad Mexican burrito with birria. It had most rice and beans in the burrito and there wasn't a lot of depth to the flavor. Drinks were good, service was a little slow but I get it on a Friday. Love this location! Such a great atmosphere by the lake and we always have great service. Every waiter/waitress we've ever had has been so fun and kind.
