I didn't expect to be in West Mifflin because frankly, I had never heard of this Pittsburgh suburb…read more However, due to a weather-related glitch on my trip, I found myself staying overnight at the neighboring Holiday Inn Express and wondering where to have dinner. I suppose I could've driven somewhere, but I noticed this roadside Mexican spot was a quick stroll away albeit next to an unlit highway. Speed demons made the darkened walk feel somewhat hazardous, but I was relieved when I found the restaurant bustling with young married couples and kids. The bar was also busy with a lot of denim and plaid among the patrons. As a solo diner, I felt conspicuous since I was seated at the most visible table. The veteran waitress left me a menu and a basket of Mexican puffed wagon wheel chips (Photo 8). Reminding me of Funyuns, I pushed most of them aside because I wasn't a family of four. The menu listed all the familiar gut-busting Mexican favorites you'd expect at a place like this. I decided on the $17 Pollo Cancun because I saw grilled chicken breast, steamed broccoli, and cauliflower in the description. What I conveniently ignored was the phrase, "bathed with white queso dip". What arrived was a bubbling pool of melting cheese in a cast-iron pan topped with a few broccoli and cauliflower florets. The chicken was flattened and still cooking underneath the cheese (Photo 9). There was a separate plate for the Mexican rice (Photo 6), and another one for the iceberg lettuce, tomato slice, sour cream, and three warm flour tortillas wrapped in foil (Photo 10). When I saw all three plates on my table, I was overwhelmed, but I assume the portions are the big draw here. Once I got my routine down of assembling my tacos, they were pretty good. I wish the chicken was fresher but otherwise it was quite edible. My favorite part of the meal though was the $11 Sangria Margarita, a frozen margarita topped off with their house sangria (Photo 5). Simple but it worked. FOOD - 4 stars...better than I expected for family-style Mexican AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...very bright, kinda loudish SERVICE - 4 stars...Rebecca came like clockwork TOTAL - 4 stars...my best meal in West Mifflin, also probably my only one...unless I make it to Kennywood RELATED - Exploring Pittsburgh?
