I called around 5:45pm on a Friday regarding reservations. The woman who answered kindly explained that on weekends (Fri & Sat) after 5pm they do NOT accept reservations. We arrived around 6:45pm but with just 2 in our party we were seated right away. The restaurant is beautiful, as it was when it was the previous restaurant (Iron Rock). They have outdoor seating on a large patio and an upstairs dining area with an elevator available for those that need or prefer one.
Our server was very nice, friendly, accommodating, attentive and prompt. Unfortunately she was also forgetful and unsure of the menu (as a newer restaurant that could account for her not being 100% on her menu knowledge). Overall she was still the best part of the evening. Drinks were average, I ordered a mezcalita and my husband's double looked more like a single, not a generous or even an adequate pour. Also disappointing was that he ordered a double of Cabo Wabo Reposado Tequila (menu price $9.75 a shot) which they were out of so they replaced it with another brand. When we received our check it was $22 instead of $19.50 (but still listed as Cabo Wabo) so I'm not sure what they replaced it with but we didn't question it. Clearly the price we were charged didn't match the listed menu price.
As for the food, most of it was disappointing and as we left we both said we would've had better from Chipotle (gasp... fast food) or better yet, Margarittas in nearby Mt. Pleasant.
We ordered 3 appetizers, 2 entrees and 2 desserts.... yes just for the 2 of us.... don't judge me, we like to eat. The order of service was all over the place which we usually don't care about but it's unprofessional at this price point. We were served one appetizer, then the other 2 appetizers with one entree, then our bar drinks, and as we were halfway through the one entree the second entree arrived. Very haphazard.
Complimentary chips and salsa were good, queso was only cheese, no seasoning, no chilies, cilantro or tomatoes, and overall that was the theme of the evening, the lack of seasoning and flavor. I missed the usual "cheesiness" and acidity from limes in the street corn and I really missed the cilantro. Our bone marrow had plenty of meaty flavor, the bone was a nice size but didn't have even a pinch of salt. The burritos were small (like the thinness of a wrap) and average in flavor, mexican rice was very bland. I ordered an Angus ribeye entree which included cactus as an accompaniment. I was excited to try it but it was sadly missing from my plate. When I asked the server she checked the menu and then went back to ask the kitchen. Her response was that they no longer serve the cactus because customers had complained about it and she didn't offer any remedy for the missing item either. Hmm I don't understand that, if you are no longer serving an item then remove it from your menu or better yet, why did the customers complain? Was it not prepared properly? It's clearly listed as part of the entree so why would someone complain if it was something they ordered and were expecting? The ribeye, potatoes and grilled onions had decent flavor though the ribeye seemed cut thin or pounded out flat, almost resembling a flank cut. The thinness also leant to it being slightly overcooked from the medium rare that I ordered. My rice and beans were missing as well so our server packaged them for us to take home.
My husband said his dulce de leche cake was average, same with my flan. My coffee was cold, the cream curdled when I added it to the coffee. My guess is that they pre-fill the cream pitchers and leave them out because as I was pouring I noticed a "skin" on the cream. My coffee spoon was sticky and dirty and when she brought me a new one, she explained that they were out of regular (teaspoon size) spoons so all she had to give me was a larger one (almost like a smaller serving size spoon). I didn't care about the spoon size but it just adds to the list of issues that need addressed. Plus, I clearly didn't drink the coffee except for one sip as I waited for my creamer and then realized the coffee was cold. The creamer she brought ended up curdled anyway but the coffee was still on my bill and she didn't inquire if there was a problem (though clearly you could see the curdled cream on top of a full cup of coffee). Coffee in restaurants is outrageously expensive for what it is so that was disappointing too. Portion size of the food was very good. We didn't have a member of management check on us at all throughout the evening.
Overall our experience cost us $200 including a nice tip (because we always tip well unless someone is outrageously awful and she wasn't). There are plenty of better options nearby. read more
