It's always sad to see an old favorite change... and not in a good way. I've been coming to this Mad Mex (and occasionally other locations) for years. I've come for lunch or dinner and most often for happy hour in the bar. Sometimes as a party of two and sometimes with a large group. Unfortunately we find ourselves coming less and less. The service is nowhere near what it used to be. It can be hit or miss depending on who you get of course and there has definitely been some turnover. It's not uncommon to wait a while before even getting to place a drink order. There have been multiple occasions where we waited 15-20 minutes and nothing so have resorted to getting up from our table to order at the bar. It doesn't always work to flag someone down and sometimes they walk right past without even looking or checking on you even when there's a table full of empty glasses. Last time we were there the food came out cool and the tofu had the wrong sauce. We were hungry and had been waiting so still ate it. When the food was dropped off we asked for ketchup for our fries. Nothing. Finally got up to go to the bar and ask for it. Several times the check has been wrong and we have had to ask and they correct it. Also for months and months the stall in the women's room wasn't being held together properly. The toilet paper holder fell open and the wall shook which is when I realized the screws that connect it were mostly missing. I made sure to notify someone and that is something that should have been fixed quickly in my opinion. It finally is fixed now. The food sometimes is still really pretty good. Happy hour deals are great but the beer list definitely leaves something to be desired. There's a decent amount of space to hang out with a group. So for an appetizer we got some chips, queso, black bean dip and guacamole which we usually get and the queso was delish as always and I don't like guacamole so I didn't eat that, my parents said that the black bean dip was different than normal but I've never tried it so I wouldn't know. I got buffalo wild boneless wings which I get every time because I will never ever change my order, I got blue cheese dressing and extra sauce. It was totally epic. About a month ago I had issue at this restaurant and sent a lengthy email but never heard back. Last week I had another issue so I'm posting both here since management doesn't respond to emails. I hit this Mad Mex for takeout on the way out of town to a few destinations. Last month I placed a pretty large order (almost $100) online. Because the online modification system is lacking things like "no tortilla" for salads and "sauce on the side" for tacos, I had to call in to make modifications for food allergies. The woman who answered the phone couldn't be bothered to let me finish my sentence and told me to "call back later because they were busy". I explained about the food allergies and she begrudgingly wrote down what I said. When I arrived, I stood at the bar for almost 5 minutes with no employee behind the bar. When someone brought the food out, everything I requested was not actioned. Tortillas on an order for a gluten free person. Sauce on things. Forgot the salad dressing. I caught what I could but some things were discovered when we cut food open. Last week I called to place a takeout order to grab before I hopped on the turnpike. To be honest, I didn't want to give them my money but the food options in Monroeville are mostly junk. I called 3 different times and nobody picked up. Then I called Greentree to ask if Monroeville was closed. The manager put me on hold, called Monroeville AND the manager and couldn't reach anyone (5 mins of hold). I called Monroeville back about 5 mins later and someone magically answered! I placed my order and when I got there, there were 2 (2!) customers. Why was nobody answering? Definitely didn't have anything to do with the employee eating Chik Fil A in the back booth on her phone or the entire pan of cake they had for some kind of employee party. I don't tip on takeout anymore no matter where I'm calling and Mad Mex was the main impetus for this. About 50% of the time something is wrong or missing with my order but in 2025, my expectations are so low, what can you do. read more

If you're in the mood for authentic Mexican food, then look elsewhere. That's not a bad thing though as I friggin' love Mad Mex and try to visit when I return to visit the Pittsburgh area. They do a different take on Mexican cuisine that's not authentic, but so good! Americanized Mexican at it's finest. My absolute favorite item on their menu is their Southwest Wings... these green, flavorful wings were one of the first things I ever ordered at the North Hills location and that sauce is so fresh and delicious. I highly recommend. Their burritos are massive and square and filling AF! They were veggie friendly for years before it was trendy. They have some delicious Tofu wraps, beans and other veggie goodies on which that southwest green wing sauce flavors up quite nicely. For thanksgiving, they have their Gobblerito which is a turkey/stuffing/potato filled behemoth of a meal with cranberry sauce to slather on top. It's like thanksgiving on a plate. Wait, that's not a good analogy, but you get my drift. They do occasionally offer this over the summer as a promotion too to get your turkey fix in before you're sick of seeing turkey everywhere. The service at this location is a bit slow. The waitress barely stopped at our table for drink refills and such. The food takes a long time to come out, but it's worth it. Multiple Mad Med and other Big Burrito locations know us when we walk in the door. And the ones who don't are still kind. Wasn't too busy for a Sunday when we stopped in. Service was decent. My husband and I shared the steak nachos and steak quesadillas. I really enjoyed the quesadillas, we asked for no corn in ours. The guac that came on the side of my nachos was flavorful. I wish the nachos were better layered. There were soooo many chips on the bottom that had nothing on is and since the cheese is melted, not melty if that makes sense, it didn't make it's way down there at all. Wow - can't believe I missed reviewing this Mad Mex until now. I have eaten at several Mad Mex locations - all good - and each with its own ambience. The Monroeville location feels like the "fun uncle" of the bunch. This was especially true when hubby and I ate at the bar on a November evening. It was like we had a free floor show. They were super busy and it was all hands on deck, but we still didn't wait very long for our meals. All the locations feature Tex-Mex décor that feels both rustic and fun. Mad Mex, part of the Big Burrito Group of restaurants, doesn't feel like a chain. That said, the food has the consistent quality you expect from a chain. One benefit of the corporate oversight for me is that staff is, for the most part, well educated re: allergens. (Plus their website is helpful.) They regularly substitute corn tortillas for the flour ones for me, with no decline in quality of the food. Mad Mex has a very creative and diverse menu - complete with the standards you can rely on and the seasonal surprises. This includes the margaritas, which highlight the flavors of the ingredients instead of drowning them in sugar. Sometimes, when I mention Mad Mex to someone they reply "I don't like Mexican food." To that I reply, it's not Mexican, it's Mad Mex. I enjoy both, but appreciate the difference. read more

We came here for dinner while our kids were seeing a movie at the mall. It was not very busy so we got a table right away. The waitress was very nice and attentive without being annoying. The rice was wonderful! I know that may be weird to rave about but I like rice and hate when it's not done right. My hubby for the spicy chicken burrito and it was huge! It was very tasty. I ordered the chicken quesadilla. It was smaller than I expected but was packed with a lot. For apps we shared the nachos - Vog's favorite menu item, which were good at frost but the chips on the bottom were all crushed and not because of the weight. I need FULL CHIPS. Great toppings of salsa, guacamole, and sour cream and the cheese and chicken were good. I have never had street corn so I ordered one- and for a first time and seeing how they're made online - this was very underwhelming. The sauce was barley sprinkled and so were the cheese. Need more. Ordered a steak fajita burrito. The steak inside was CHARRED and few and far between. Very underwhelming. Should have ordered something else. Decided to try some Mexican food in Pittsburgh during our vacation. Ehh if fine was out consensus rating. Mad Mex is a good but not great restaurant everything was average or slightly above average. The food was ok, my quesadilla was kind of dry, the margarita was ok nothing special, just a very constantly average food experience. The only great thing was out server, we was running his butt off, he was the only one I saw waiting on tables, I think he had every table in our section. The worst part was where they sat us at, it was right under the AC, so every few minutes while eating a cold drip of water fell on me, not what you want when eating out, drip, drip drip, Overall If you're looking to get a fixing of Tex-Mex or margaritas then Mad Mex will fill that itch. The 3 stars exemplify that this is a slightly above middle of the pack joint. Does nothing wrong but also doesn't do anything special either.
