It's true, this place is very third world. If I were to imagine what a department store would look like in a country where there's no indoor plumbing, this would be it. I came here this morning because I needed a new suit (getting a little chubby from all this GrubHubbing I've been doing lately. It's not good, but that's another story. A sad story). Anywho, I went to Lord & Taylor to pick up an ASL by Tahari suit in Petite size, then was informed once I got there that they don't carry petite anymore. Hrm.. okay. So I hopped the T and got to Macy's this morning. They had a really great selection of the ASL Tahari petite suits. The only trouble about this place is the sorry state of affairs that is their Fitting Rooms. True, I could have taken a photo and attached it to this review, but why depress people if it's not truly necessary. It looks like the fitting rooms were accidentally razed, then pieced back together by the lowest bidder. But I got a suit, and the veteran sales ladies there are really nice and know what they're talking about. read more

I've been going here for my whole life, but not because it's a good store. It's purely out of convenience. The customer service is absolute garbage. I returned a pair of shoes once, and the cashier was beyond rude about it. The cashier remarked, "maybe you shouldn't buy shoes you don't wear." Um, really man? The cashiers hate their lives, and it's very evident. No matter which register I go to, it takes over ten minutes to check out. Not to mention, as others have pointed out, the selection is crappy and the store is a mess. I only come in here for cosmetics now. I'm focusing on the men's and young men's department. WAY too much Hip-Hop junk in Macy's. No men's smalls in the Calvin Klein section EVER. What the hell is going on with THAT? My partner asked them if they had any size 30 Donna Karan summer shorts, that we saw in the Saugus Macy's. They said they did not carry Donna Karan shorts. (The shorts were actually Donna Karan's DKNY line, but please, was it THAT hard to extrapolate this?) One of the staff asked another staff member to go with us to check out the men's section a little more thoroughly for the supposedly non-existent shorts, and the kid actually said he was too busy fixing the fit of his co-worker's tie. YIKES. We did finally find them with the help of another staff member, but we felt like we practically had to BEG theses people to be of any assistance. read more

Love, love the Macy's in Phoenix. Thus, we knew this was our go to store while vacationing. However, entire sections of the store were desolate and without salespersons. The men's shoes had four disinterested customer reps. After sliding my payment for a purchase, the sales woman simply stated that my receipt was sent via email, then she walked away. No thank you?!? Here is something that confuses me. I am always reading about events going on at the Macy's Downtown- fashion shows, C list celebrities, demonstrations. Why on earth are all these things happening in one of the grossest Macy's stores ever? Dirty, disorganized, poorly lit and lacking in helpful staff are all great ways to describe this store. I am usually drawn in by all the pretty cosmetics in the window and often make a go at trying to find something I like, but it never seems to work out in my favor. The shoe department takes the cake though, some of the worst customer service ever! You have to fight a throng of women to even get a salesperson's attention and good luck getting them to actually bring you some shoes. The store's saving grace is the cosmetics/perfume department. It's RIGHT-THERE! 20$ for Ben Sherman Jeans (that make my ass look like TINY). 16$ for a Lucky Brand Dress (that make my boobs look like HUGE). 11$ for Miss Sixty Jeans (that make my legs look SKINNY). 26$ for French Connection Sweater (that make me feel HOT). 21.50$ for BCBG Dress Pants (that make my ass look KILLER). 9$ a pop for French Connection Tank Tops (that are practical and well made). As with the G-Spot... the perfect, cheapest stuff at this Macy's is elusive but - Search and you will find. It's teeming with little surprises but it takes some serious patience. I usually placed orders online because the customer service in the store sucked! The shoes department had the worst attitudes. All they cared about was "sales commission". When I returned shoes at the store, nobody wanted to serve me. Macy's you should create a "self-serve" station for returns. Don't expect any customer service around the holidays either. Today I waited at the register for over 15 mins and nobody was there to help me. Finally a guy came - he said I must go back to the salesperson who helped me earlier. That's ridiculous! I had to look for her on the floor and waited for her to finish with other customers. This created so much inconvenience for me and unnecessary waiting time. read more

BIG place, right off of T. Reminds me of the older department stores with the cosmetics right up front. I like the selection of the women's clothing, but when I went to help my S.O. find a suit, we were sorely disappointed. We were there around 11am and the associate helping us was MANIC. He was shaking and had bloodshot eyes. That might have been fine had he been able to size my S.O. properly, but he was a full 2 sizes off, swimming in shoulder pads. read more

Macy's, Macy's, Macy's; you giant corporate behemoth.... You have all of the lines that are staples in anyone's wardrobe but you are a hot mess! I know it's the public; they are slobs, but whose job is it to pick up the clothes strewn about the racks? It's repetitive and tedious, yes, but there is a certain amount of accountability when it comes to presentation. I'm not looking to go into a department store, shopping for clothing (et al) when I feel as though the circus diverted their parade route through you store. Also, I believe your pricing is getting a bit out of hand. I understand that you've successfully squashed Filene's into the ground and that you own a considerable slice of the market share, but when you price your product outside of everyday Joes' budgets, guess what happens? Most of us are hip to the credit crisis these days and are not willing to take your pusher's offer of a Macy's card, so why not do the reasonable thing and be fair? On the upside, there is a fair amount of sale dates at this location and the staffers are consistently helpful, but the fact remains that you are not offering the best deals in the neighborhood and with that said you should know that your customers are about as loyal as an Austrian cyborg bodybuilder elected to public office. read more

I believe that this Macy's is the biggest one that I can easily get to via the T from Cambridge. I'm not a huge fan of Macy's but I come every once in a while because they have "biggest sale of the season"s all the time. (You'd think that we had 10+ seasons in the year here.) Occasionally I find something I really like at an amazing price and I'm happy. However, the service here is almost outright rude. At the designer handbags section (where I spend most of my time when I visit Macy's), I've had employees actually almost shove me aside to get by me. It wouldn't hurt to say 'excuse me'! And sometimes they don't even bother saying sorry! It's one thing when salespeople aren't helpful (normal at places like this, I think) but this hasn't happened at any other Macy's locations, not just in Boston but also in NYC and California. read more

Maybe a little overpriced, but I've always had good luck here. Been shopping at this Macy's for.... well, a long time. My guy is Ed - you'll find him in the men's section. He's the main salesperson there. He's been with Macy's way back when this was a Jordan Marsh. He helped me out back then too. Anyhow - if you're a guy - go see Ed. He's a lanky fellow with a mustache and glasses. Always a pleasure to have him wait on me and help me find things. I shop here all the time. This is regarding furniture delivery specifically: IMPORTANT: In the Boston area, Macy's only has 26' trucks that deliver furniture. This means that if you live anywhere in the North End or Beacon Hill where there are predominately narrow streets, the furniture that you are sold, will not be delivered to you. It will be sold to you, but it will not be delivered and your order will have to be cancelled. Waste of everyone's time :) Anyways...happy shopping! read more

I have been shopping a lot during the holiday season. I have realized that sometimes Macy's has discount coupon, which can be used together with the sales items. If you don't have the coupon, just ask the customer service if they can provide. Yesterday, when I was checking out a dress. I first asked at one check-out counter if they could provide me with a discount coupon. The lady there said she did not have one. So I went to another one. They actually provided me with a coupon. So I had additional 20% off my purchase. In total, I saved 20 bucks. So please don't hesitate to ask or make sure you get all the discount you deserve. Happy Christmas! read more

I mainly come here for the random houseware, linen, or suitcase purchase located at the basement level. Also, I will shop first floor for makeup - they have a MAC counter, and some other major lines as well. The clothing on the other hand is another story. The fitting rooms in particular are old and unkept with stained carpets. Tip: If you want great service, look for an employee with a star sign on their name tag. read more

I'm not sure what else to say except if you're really desperate to get yourself to a Macy's that's T-accessible, I guess this is one option... but it's definitely not (and shouldn't be) your only option. I'll give this Macy's one star for its mere existence, and another because it's large... so if you look hard, I'm sure you'll find whatever it is that you need to find. A piece of advice, though? Macy's? I dunno, how do you review Macys? Well, as for this particular location, it's ok I guess. I don't usually end up buying much here...the selection is a bit limited. The bathrooms (which is generally why I'm in the building) are beyond disgusting. But...desperate needs... Hmmm....I guess it's average? 3 stars? Could definitely afford an upgrade...I've been to better Macy's....this one is really a bit below-average I think. I hate department stores. They give me anxiety. TOO MANY THINGS!!! But now that I work in a building connected to Macy's I find myself there a lot more. It's not great, your typical department store. Things shuffled everywhere, people spraying you with perfume. I had two people come up to me and tell me I needed a makeover. What I need is to get these links removed from my watch, thank you! They graciously removed the links which was great. I'm just able to get everything here ! Now I just have to figure out how to deal with the sales. I received a Macy's gift card for Christmas and I wanted new shoes for a party, so I thought I'd stop by this Macy's on the way home from work. I thought maybe everyone else on here was exaggerating about the customer service at this Macy's, but they were accurate, and I was appalled! One of the workers in the shoes section made it perfectly clear to me that finding me the match to the shoe I found on the clearance rack wasn't worth his time. Not only was I an immediate inconvenience to his socializing, but he was frustrated that I would want to try both shoes on before I purchased and gave him his precious commission... which he did nothing to earn. After I stomped out of the shoe section, I wandered down to the handbags and found two I wanted to buy. I had to go look for a salesperson, and found one sitting in a chair, chatting with a friend in perfumes before I could check out. Both bags rang up full price, even though I found them on a 50% off rack. The cashier GLARED at me when I spoke up, sighed, and had me walk her through the section to show her where I found the bags. This was clearly a massive inconvenience to her, so I finished my purchase and got out of there as soon as possible. I hope I never have to go back. read more

I came here yesterday because I was bored. Yes, BORED. And I happen to be downtown so why not since the place is big and it can kill some time. I just looked around, picking and poking to see if I can find something or if something pick on me. I saw a couple of things that looked cute and wanting to try them on. I was looking here and there more and each time I look, the place seem to be messier and messier. It totally killed my mood of wanting to shop. I didn't even feel like wasting my time there anymore, even if i needed to kill time. I finally muster the stamina and went to the dressing room. What a mess. There were cloths in a few of the rooms. some of them have really poor lighting and bad mirrors and while others don't have a seating space. Most of the doors don't close, let alone LOCK. ARGH!! that always makes me unhappy when they don't lock. I can never tell if anyone would just push open the door (which i have witness happened before). Needless to say, I did like a couple of the things so I went to pay for them. The lady was ok. She didn't seem to want to be there. Another lady was also working there but she was just yapping away with someone else and not paying attention to the line that was forming before me or that I've waited for several minutes now waiting for the person in front of me who was also paying to decide which ones she wanted and which she didn't and deciding on how she was going to pay. I was debating if I should just leave the stuff and just leave but soon as that thought came, it also went because she finally turns around and asked if I was all set... really? do i look like I was all set? LOL Paying was quick. I didn't have my coupons with me so she scanned one by her and gave me an extra 20% off. That was nice so I was happy with that. I've been to other Macy's. this one seems a bit more disorganized than others I've been to. read more

Same problem, different year. Shoe selection is fine, I even saw a couple pairs I wanted to try on, so I stand there looking around like a lost child until I finally grab someone's attention. The woman asks me if I'm being helped, I say no and that I want to try these shoes on in a 7, she barely looks at me and says OK and walks away. Now I have no idea if she is getting the shoes, because she didn't take the one I had, she didn't say more than 3 words, and she wasn't nice....so I'm still just standing there. Then a younger man comes over and is friendly and asks me if I need a shoe size, and by this time I had picked up another pair too, he asked if I was being helped and I said I really didn't think so. He was 100% nicer anyway, so he took the shoes I had and went to get sizes and made it very clear he was helping me and he would be right back. Then the first lady comes over and sees that he got me shoes and shes pissed, clearly. She makes some remark to him and he puts my shoes down and leaves. Then she makes some remark under her breath to me. I ask her what she said, and she tells me "you people think just because I didn't take the shoes I wasn't getting a size but I was ..." some other mumbles I didn't hear. Then she leaves too. I didn't even try on the shoes, I just left. The shoe dept. needs a better system because every time I come in here over the YEARS, the sales associates are fighting over customers and it's very uncomfortable. So I will keep going to DSW where I can pick my own sizes. read more

This place is great in some ways, godawful in another. Their sales are confusing as to what can or cannot be used for coupons. I can't use a coupon with my card or I can and it may or may not show up on my bill at the end of the month? 75% off costume jewelery clearance? Awesome! They give you nice little boxes for some of the pieces too. Very helpful. Forget the juniors department. Full of gum-snapping face-chewers more interested in "What she said, oooh girl," than what I need. The price scanners have been broken the last few times I've been there. Seriously, I don't want to wait in line just to see what this costs post all the crazy ass sales and percentages off. I love the window displays and the holiday times, it becomes incredible. Though seeing the homeless man sleeping right underneath it does take some of the charm out of it. Selection is amazing, and they have a lot of support for foreign speakers (including a diverse workforce and a visitors center). Some of the people are great, some of them are terrible. It's what you make of the Macy's Magic they're pushing. read more

I really don't like this particular Macy's. The location is so perfect, right in the middle of DTX...but the store is old and outdated, the fixtures, floors and carpets need an overhaul and the lack of natural light makes me cringe. The layout also makes little sense...I don't truly understand why there is a "dress" section but there are plenty of dresses found in the other designers little locations. I mean...just put them all in one place, or nix the dress section in favor of having the little designer boutiques be all-inclusive of what they have to offer. I was walking past the men's shoe section and saw a brown mouse perusing the selection of shoes. Granted, I don't think Macy's carries his sized, but he was checking it out nonethless. I would love to see the place modernized and cleaned up a bit. It would go a long way in revitalizing the area, their business and bring in new clientele. read more

I lived in the women's section, hiding inside massive racks, it was awesome. But when I moved up here, I feel like Filene's catered to the average person and Macy's decided to be one step up and just be expensive for no reason. And then Macy's ate Filene's and I cried... and they sent me a Macy's credit card to replace my Filene's one. But I decided to end the Macy's embargo. I went last night (Weds) and it was semi-deserted. And they had LOTS of men's swimming suits, and on sale. Some were even $14.99. My bf who doesn't like to shop for clothes actually wanted to look around a bit. I checked out the misses' section and tried not to get sucked in. If I had wanted to buy another swimsuit, I maybe could have here as they still had some. Macy's has got what you need. Just maybe a little more expensive. Wait till there's a sale and those ridiculous coupons come out and clean them out. Other than that, go if you can't find it cheaper somewhere else. This is a review of a recent experience that I had at the fine jewelry department. A stone in a ring that I had purchased fell out and the stone was hard to replace. The process required me to stop in twice and to call once. Every person that I interacted with was professional and helpful. I want to especially thank Jeanne for the wonderful customer service and for solving the problem of the missing stone on the ring that I love. I think I know why Macy's is performing so terribly. Their purchasing strategies have written off the middle-aged and seniors, while at the same time the younger generations don't see it as a cool place to shop. Two examples: 1. I was looking for just a pair of jeans. I would say at least 95% of the stock were noted to "fit below the waist". Unlike some young guys, I personally don't want my jeans to look like they will fall down at any second. I walked out and over to Sears to find exactly what I was looking for at a much more reasonable price. 2. I wanted to get a good pair of warm dress gloves. The entire stock had gloves with the indexed finger barely protected. At first I thought it was a manufacturing defect, but it turns out they are designed that way to facilitate cell use while outside. Macy's doesn't want my generation so I'm not coming back! read more

The worst associates ever ! If you want to shop at a place where they don't greet you and just continue talking to One another- come here! I greeted them and they didn't even greet me back before starting on my transaction and still talking to one another. I know you hate your job and all but really?! Then I went to different person who happens to probably still be in school to ask them to cut the tags off the new gloves and he gave me such a hard time about why can't I just rip them off with my hand. Not only that but he doesn't even know how to use scissors so I'm over here saying "let me do it..." and he's like no. I was so afraid he would cut the fur off the gloves !!!! God Macy's LET TO HIRE PEOPLE. if I was management I'd write them all up. We don't pay you to chat with each other and give customers attitude. Imagine the worst retail experience you can, and then put condescending staff on top. It's amazing they're in business at all.

I'm not really into Macy's overall -I think this chain pretty expensive and the quality of merchandise is equal to that of other stores such as Kohl's or JCPenney that have the same stuff at cheaper prices. Sometimes there are literally the same brands or items and Macy's is twice as expensive. I will give the store some props though: I did find a cool, dressy Sean John shirt for my boyfriend on clearance for $40. Again, I felt it was a little overpriced but it was a gift and unique so I just went for it. The store was clean and the sales person was very nice. I just think they could do a little better on the selection of merchandise at fairer prices. read more

Perhaps one of the worst Macy's I've ever visited (poorly organized clothes crowded onto clearnace racks, masses of random stuff on sale tables, dingy dressing rooms with locks that don't really work so well and staff that isn't shy about making it known that they'd rather be elsewhere), but NOTHING will stop me from the BARGAINS. Unlike other Macy's such as the one at the Mall at Chestnut Hill and other suburban locations in the US, at this Macy's you can be assured that you will feel no shame rummaging through the clearance racks searching for bargains. No suburban snootiness here. Everyone here is looking for stuff on the cheap. I even overheard two sales clerks mention that the only people who buy things here at regular price are foreign tourists. Us locals want a bargain. Also, the Macy's card: get it. Pay it off every month, reap awesome discounts and coupons. When you come to this store, bring all your bargain hunting stamina. There are awesome clearance racks but you will have to sift through tons of stuff. Pick up some roasted nuts at the carts outside to keep you going. Avoid the cosmetics and perfume counters. The sales staff are VERY pushy. I went in with a gift card to the Chanel counter to buy one lipstick. I knew exactly what I wanted and just expected to get it and then move on to bargain hunting upstairs. However, the sales woman tried to sell me tons of other products. Moreover, after I paid and she was able to see the balance remaining on my gift card, she insisted I use remaining amount to buy more Chanel products. Um, no, thank you. Also, for my business peeps: great deals on suits. I've picked up several here from designers like Tahari for $79-$99. Watch the sales and use your Macy's card coupons. read more
