I have always loved to travel to Brookline and stop over at Mint Julep. The owner was always so friendly and had a lovely disposition. Today I was in the store and experienced a salesperson being condescending, making me feel very uncomfortable as a customer. I don't know if ownership has changed, but it's definitely not a good experience. Please recognize the tone and way of speaking to customers. I wanted to get a fabulous graduation gift for my dear young friend since I couldn't attend. She had tried on over 30 dresses and none fit or otherwise wouldn't work for the Harvard events. When she texted me a photo of the first dress she really liked, I knew that was the gift I wanted to get her. She put the dress on hold while she tried one more place. I was able to call the store & purchase it for her. Their fabulous staff was amazing in helping me surprise Ashley! They immediately knew who I was referring to, made sure they had the correct dress with her name on it, took my credit card, and wrapped it BEAUTIFULLY! I haven't experienced personal service like this since the good 'ol 1980's. Thank you SO MUCH Mint Julep! She loves the dress and even told me it was like I was there with her. She'll also treasure all of the photos of her in that dress during such a monumental event! read more

Mint Julep always comes through for me on Small Business Saturday, a.k.a. the last shopping day before you really have to get ready to ship your parcels overseas. I'm so not a girly girl, and I can't imagine shopping for myself there: fuzzy fleece plus skinny jeans is my uniform, bonus points if they're from the Goodwill. For that small-town teenaged niece whom I don't know super-well, though, I consistently score the most amazing big-city Christmas present, every single year. This time around: cozy mittens in a subtle heart pattern ($17). Those will be all over her IG starting 12/26, as per usual. Previous hits include a pendant ($20) and a warm beanie with a fur pompom (a splurge at $40, don't regret it a bit). The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about the stock and so friendly and warm, even to someone who doesn't look at all like them. They have lots of suggestions and don't bat an eye at a tight budget. I even get my presents wrapped for free, with gorgeous ribbons and paper. Walking past Mint Julep, I probably wouldn't have realized that it had such a wide range of very giftable goodies. So grateful to the stylish friend who dragged me in there eight years ago! read more

Had such a great experience at this store! I love shopping at boutiques/ small businesses. I am also a curvy woman. Unfortunately, I have had several experiences where I have walked into several boutiques and wasn't even acknowledged because I wasn't a size zero. Brooke took her time helping me find sizes and pulled a few pieces for me (one of which i wound up buying). When I fell in love with a piece and they didn't have it in my size, she ordered it for me. She went out of her way to personally call and followed up with me when she found up they had the item in stock in another location. Randomly popped in looking for a white dress, but was immediately met with a glare from the woman behind the counter. Didn't really think much of it until she looked to her coworker and nodded toward me and my sister (both women of color) and followed us around the store. This has been my favorite store since I first wandered in 4 years ago. And many old favorites from way back then are still in HEAVY rotation in my closet. In response to all y'all with severe sticker shock, you get what you pay for, and even the simple boatneck tee that gave me tremors at $50 when I was 18 has survived innumerable washings and wearings and is softer than ever. Mint Julep is run by two young women (are they still in their 20's?) who met each other in college in VT. They obviously love clothing and are just incredibly nice people. I once had a salesperson point out a sweater on the sale rack that was very similar to the one I was eyeing for a small fraction of the price. Now, why would any profit-oriented clerk do such a thing, except out of a genuine desire to help her customer? (The sweater is still on my shelf although I had to sew up a tear, but then again I always put it in the dryer instead of dry-cleaning it.) Last Christmas I wanted to get the boyfriend a wide, luscious grey cashmere scarf like one I had bought from Mint Julep three years before. I didn't remember the brand, but when I called the store on a long shot they knew what I was talking about, had no more of the scarves left that season and only hot pink in Brookline; but they gave me the manager's phone number for their store in NYC. She was extremely helpful, described the shades of grey (a warm grey or a cool grey? a rainy grey or a heather grey? like newsprint or like the text of the newspaper?) and offered to ship it to me the very next day, even in the midst of the holiday shopping frenzy! Yes, they have their $300+ designer dresses off the runways. Which are made of high quality fabrics with such a degree of fine detailing that they are usually worth that price; it isn't just arbitrary. But they also have dresses between $75 and $100 that are beautiful and well-made. If you have a party to go to, an event, a hot date, or you just want to look extra extra good, definitely stop in here. I just wish they had more 24 jeans and that the jeans table was better organized; if they did that then I would have to give them six stars. read more

I was setting Mint Julep up to be my 200th review but accidentally yelped a generic Adams Morgan bar instead! Shame on me. Actually, shame on me for my initial assumptions that this lovely, locally-owned boutique's high prices and Harvard Square location meant that it catered to undergrads wielding Daddy's credit card in shopping sprees and scorned those who show up in sweatpants. The high-quality clothing and high-quality staff make it a milestone-review-worthy place. Rachel (the girl with the glasses and light brown hair) knows her shizzle. She helped me pick out a red Tano clutch and black Kenzie jacket a few months ago, being very patient as I tried on about ten jackets and put the contents of my purse in every single clutch in the store to test out their capacity. I wish I'd taken her advice to buy a lovely gray Milly dress too--its cost per wear would have been well worth the splurge. I purposely ended my hour-long run here last Saturday to peruse the selection of Tano bags, and Rachel helped me out again. Like porridge to Goldilocks, the bags were all high-quality but not quite right. Rachel didn't push me to buy any bag that wasn't the equivalent to baby-bear porridge. She even called Tano to see if they had any grape or avocado bags--unfortunately, they didn't but I still appreciate the effort. From the looks of it, I expected to run screaming out of this adorable boutique store the second I caught a glimpse of the prices. Truth be told, it ain't cheap, but I have been shocked to find over and over again that there are things here I can afford. These are high quality clothes, this is a locally-owned shop, and these prices reflect that, yet still manage to stay reasonable. This is the perfect place to find a unique dress for a special occasion (like a wedding, your birthday party, etc), a great piece for work (I got some of my favorite work pants here, and on sale!!), or some great funky jewelry. The things here are classy, somewhat high end, but also have an edge to them, so you'll find some really interesting, creative things here. Possibly best of all, the sales employees here are so sweet and helpful without being pushy at all. This is important to me, as I want to be able to browse the racks without being followed around, yet feel like I can ask a question when I need to. read more

I come here when I'm having a bad day. Even if I don't buy anything, just looking at so many pretty things makes me feel better about the world in general. I guess I'm easy to please. I love that when I buy something here, I won't pass four other girls in the same dress when I walk down the street. I love that this store always has something that is flattering and that I just HAVE TO HAVE. I love how genuinely excited the employees get when you ask them their opinion when trying to decide between two pieces. I'll join the chorus and begin by saying that this store is way out of my price range - I'm usually more of a Marshalls/TJ Maxx/Overstock.com shopper. But I found a wondrous, perfectly fitting and unique dress here for an upcoming summer wedding. It was the only one in the store, which kind of makes me want to believe in fate, hence I was powerless against the splurge. Before I go on in this vein and tell you how a cupcake restored my faith in humanity or something, I just want to emphasize the service could not have been more helpful or friendly and I wanted to recognize them for running a great business and not making me feel like an unworthy schlub off the street which is something I've experienced in countless other boutiques. I went to Mint Julep today after reading other reviews of it, and I was so happy to be in this store. Everything seemed like it was picked out with lots of consideration, and only the cutest things were chosen. This was great, because at some stores you can tell that they just pick whatever is trendy, even if it isn't stylish. I tried on a few dresses for fun, and they were all very comfortable, well-made, and pretty. The size of the store made it very easy to look around and not feel overwhelmed with selection. It was just right. The clothes and accessories are expensive, but I would definitely buy something here for a nice occasion. It's true: women buy more when they are tipsy. Ugh, I should have never come in here after finishing up at the Border. I was walking down the street helping my friend search for a dress for an upcoming wedding when, all of a sudden, I got this incredible urge to shop. This isn't something that happens to me often as I can normally walk past a sale without thinking twice. This itch, though, I could not suppress, so into Mint Julep I went. It's a tiny boutique, but everything they carry is uber cute. There are only a handful of items, and each item has about one of each size. So when I saw some dresses I liked, I snatched up my size like it was nobody's business. I fell in love with 3 items, two dresses and one pair of shorts. I left the shorts in attempt to regain control, but I bought the two dresses. The orange one was marked way down bc of some tiny snag that I can fix in less time than my wallet can tell me to "put that dress down!". Some advice: Don't feel bad for grabbing something that someone else was eying first. It's survival of the fittest, girlfriend, don't you ever forget that. I love this place - it is just the right amount of girly. It's bright, clean, open and when you walk in, it is hard to walk away. The inviting and pleasant atmosphere is hard to come by and they do it well. Lots of clothes, accessories and jewelry. The words "super cute" come to mind, and any girl can have an Elle Woods moment here. I came here to get some accessories for a dress. Since I got the dress for 90% off (!!!) i felt justified in spending a little more on shiny things. In this case, it was earrings. They had a good selection and didn't mind that we picked and put down almost every piece. I will def be back, to browse or to treat myself if the occasion calls for it. This is a great place for some self-indulgence or just a try-on fest with your girlfriends. read more

Awfully cute little boutique. Last winter I visited London with my best friend, and within twenty-four hours I was completely smitten with the overall style of the bustling crowds: men in smart, pinstriped three-piece suits! French cuffs! Funky prints! Kickass hosiery! Thus, I now harbor a slight case of Anglophilia when it comes to fashion. I happened into Mint Julep a couple of weeks before xmas, vaguely thinking that perhaps I'd find something new to wear to an upcoming "cocktail" party. I'm pretty picky when it comes to investing in clothing and did not find anything that was more compelling than the outfit I already had in my closet (that being one of the two clothing purchases made in London, a swank Ted Baker skirt) but I was really intrigued with the designers represented (inc'l that same Ted!) and will be back to browse in the future. I did end up finding a handbag -- I am not a bag girl so this was sort of a huge deal for me -- which worked out perfectly. You always find the things you need when you aren't looking, no? It was pretty crowded when I was there, but after a bit of a wait the staff was just the right amount of attentive when I got a turn in in the fitting room. Another woman was trying to find something for a holiday party and was in a hurry, and I was impressed with how chill and helpful her salesperson was. I'm about to enter start-up mode for my own business soon and don't really have much of a clothing budget just now (drat), but when things even out I'll be back to pick up a few choice pieces. I can't promise I won't still be whining about the lack of M&S, Topshop, Selfridges, et al... but this place should help ease my pain. The lack of proper millinery in this country, however...! It was tempting to lower my rating to three stars, but I'm not sure it's fair to judge the store for something that is really the fault of designers. If you read many of my reviews, you know what I'm talking about. Yeah, that's right...it's the size selection. I love the clothing at Mint Julep. It's overwhelmingly adorable yet wearable at the same time. That's a hard combo to pull off. The thing is they mostly stock brands that don't carry past a size 10, which is slightly problematic for a girl who wears a size 10 *give or take* and sometimes needs extra room in the boob-al area. It's always disappointing to dry on a beautiful dress, only to find that it won't zip much past the waist. The hips are fine, and so is the waist itself...it's just that above there needs some more room. Except there is no size up to try on. Sad. Either way, they stock full size ranges in several brands of designer jeans (I love you Jerome Dahan) and the staff is always helpful and friendly. I love their jewelry, too, and am now the proud owner of two pairs of earrings and two pretty little plastic rose rings. I can't help coming in here to poke around and try a few things on whenever I'm in Harvard Square and have some time. read more

YOW! This place is expensive! But if you can afford it, you will no doubt pick up some real signature pieces for your wardrobe. I've never been to the Brookline store, but I like the size of the Harvard store. Even though it's small, it's never felt cramped to me. The space of the store is perfectly utilized to present the clothes in discreet pockets, so the flow isn't too disturbed when there's a lot of people moving around inside. And I like the size of the two dressing rooms--nice and spacious. I was pleased to see some Anna Sui dresses there last season, a real surprise. Usually Boston boutiques offer a collection of obscure New York middleweights, but sometimes you find some real gems in this place. Oh, beware, no refunds, only store credit is offered. read more

I'm really disappointed in Mint Julep after being a longtime customer at both their Cambridge and Brookline locations. However, after popping into the Cambridge location on Saturday, I was horrified by the lack of professionalism displayed by the sales associate. While she greeted me when I entered the store, she proceeded to spend the rest of the time I was in the shop talking loudly with a friend, who seemed to have been visiting while the sales associate was working. Their conversation was highly inappropriate for a workplace in front of a customer: drinking and gossip were heavily featured. I felt uncomfortable browsing while this private conversation was publicly taking place, and left without trying on the shirt I had picked up off the rack. This is not the quality of service I have come to expect from this shop, and I hope it never happens again. read more

Mint Julep is the kind of place I want to love and be able to buy out the store every time I visit. Unfortunately, fantasy and reality don't really meet here. True, they have some great dresses, but the price points are too high given a) the brands, b) the store, and c) the H square location. While the store feels a bit crowded with merchandise, I was recently in the market for a new pair of earrings so stopped in with a friend and just couldn't find anything I wanted. One or two of the dresses were particularly cute, but just not worth the over $300 price tag. Aw the Mint Julep. You make me feel beautiful. I step into your store and instantly feel like a woman draped in all things girly. Every time I'm here I die to spend money. I ache with every fiber of my being to be drenched in their gorgeous dresses! However, I typically resort to an accessory or two. Or even their sale items, which also come with a reasonable price tag. For the quality of the items they sell, I'm bound to break down and splurge one day. I wish there were more stores like this. They carry Orla Kiely (British designer) clothes and that's almost enough for 5 stars by itself. Most stores only carry Orla's bags or accessories, not many clothes. I like the size of the store and decor too, since I am put off a bit by stores like Jasmine Sola because the atmosphere and selection tends to be a bit too... how should I put it...teenager-ish? Absolutely nothing wrong with teenager-ish things, I used to be one too! But it's just that... I'm not a teenager anymore. (I do shop there too sometimes!) Mint Julep is cute and fun yet grown up. I can walk in without feeling like I am the oldest person there (Im' 28). The clothes I buy here, when people notice it, they go "aww, you look like Lulu!" I have no idea who Lulu was, apparently it's a cartoon character? People are nice too, there is this one girl who has wavy long hair (I don't remember what her hair color was) who is very nice. Once my card didn't go through for some reason, so I asked her to hold the clothes while I go to the bank just around the corner. She was very understanding. When I got back with money and explained that the bank put hold on my card by mistake, she was like "I hate it when they do that!" and told me an episode of her story with credit card. That made me feel better, because I feel all embarrassed when my card doesn't go through. She always greets everyone that comes into the store with a smile. I wish they got their website more developed, so we can shop online. I asked a store person about it, and she said "It won't be up for a while. Nobody wants to do it! Urrggg! Administrative hell!" It's actually very straightforward. Very hip, very chic clothing. You cannot afford it. Done. I've been in there twice, once nailed me a gorgeous pashmina shawl (which cost $40, as all pashmina shawls seem to cost unless you're haggling actively in a situation that allows it) and once got me a cool pair of funky cameo-inspired earrings. There's lots of stuff that I like, but inevitably the price tag steers me away. I have no objection to paying for quality, but at Mint Julep levels, you're now paying for labels ($300 jeans? They're denim, in case you hadn't heard) and the very hip location in Harvard Square, so forget it. It's great for some people. It's not a bad shop. It's definitely where to go if you near high-end dressy clothing and you want someone else's eye to have gone over it. It's a lot more avant-garde than I would personally go for in most situations, but avant-garde can look good on the right people. But in the way of reviews, I try to let people know what to expect, and this is a hip designer boutique, alpha and omega. read more

I could've sworn I had already written a review of Mint Julep. Oh well. LOVE this place. I give it 4 stars only because I just can't afford most of the stuff in here. I go in here for 2 reasons, sometimes 3. 1) to browse the awesome Free People and Orla Kierly stuff 2) to purchase the one and only thing I can afford: fun jewelry 3) sometimes, they have great tunes playing Today, I saw a dress to die for. To. Die. For! But choked back the tears as I saw it was around $380. Ouch. Mint Julep to me is a little like Shake the Tree, a go-to place for girly gifts. And I love how if they don't have something in stock, they'll take down your info and call you when it's in, and they'll have it waiting for you until you're able to swing by and pick it up. I have walked past this store many times and wanted to peek inside, and today after school I did just that. The selection is small, and expensive, but mostly high quality. The styles run the gamut from elegant to slightly tacky. They have a fair selection of jewellery and two clean and pleasant changing rooms. All the girls who were working there were extremely nice and helpful despite being very busy. I ended up buying the cutest ring ever and a lovely dress... I'll definitely come back, but I can't justify giving more than four stars unfortunately due to their fairly limited selection (when compared to other nearby stores) and their high prices (but then, it's Harvard Square- what do I expect?). read more

I've been eying this boutique since I moved to Cambridge - it looked so incredibly cute. Though the store has a great location, and is a fab place to kill time before a movie at the harvard square theater - I walked out unimpressed. The sales girl barely acknowledged me, and I could have certainly used the help. Why? - well none of their cute merchandise was organized well. Dresses seemed haphazardly placed - and I found the same Milly dress in several parts of the store. To their credit, their merchandise is adorable and I did manage to find some stuff I adored. Now if the sales person had paid some attention to me, I may have bought it! read more

I'm not typically a boutique shopper, but when I am, I have high expectations: great customer service. Admittedly, most of the designers are run of the mill that I could find online or even at some department stores: Nanette Lepore, Shoshanna, Free People, Alice + Olivia, Tracy Reese (Plenty! line), etc. There are also some lesser known names (Beth Bowley, Maloom, etc.) that I appreciate. THAT SAID, kudos to their buyer(s) on cohesive pieces that go with the feel of the store and the demand on their clientele. On the downside... I have a 38" bust, which apparently is no longer a standard size 10. True, I can get a 6 and an 8 to zip over my waist, but... whenever I ask, "Do you have the next size up?" it is almost always a resounding "No," which is a huge bummer. On the plus side, the customer service is GREAT. The gals were all very professional, welcoming, and gave great advice. They did NOT attempt to talk me into a dress that fit everywhere but was clearly too tight on my bust. They did try to help me find a dress for a summer wedding that I am attending. Tragically, nothing flattering fit over my bust. However, I am still giving the store 4 stars because the customer service was superb; the shop was clean, inviting, and well-organized; the merchandise is undeniably lovely. ...Except that none of it fits me. I definitely recommend this branch of Mint Julep over the Coolidge Corner location, even if it is a bit out of your way. It's worth it. read more

This is definitely one of my favorite places to shop in Harvard Square. The girls who work there are very nice and very helpful. The stuff is a bit pricey (dresses run $100-$400), but the stuff is great quality, stylish, but still classic and not overly trendy. They've also got a good selection of jewelry. I especially like the rings and the rose earrings. However, it is quite a small store so they sometimes won't have sizes. They seem to definitely stock sizes 2-8, and sometimes 10-12. However, most of their dresses aren't stocked in a zero--so you'll have to look elsewhere or deal with a special order. read more

The clothes are expensive but what do you expect when you're paying for Nanette Lepore or Milly? The selection is great if you're willing to spend money and if not there's always the sale rack where I got a Cory Lynn Calter dress for $65. I have not experienced any problems with the sales girls there, for me they have always been very helpful and courteous. Also the accessories are reasonably priced and quite cute, I fell in love with a beautifully detailed cameo necklace and to this day regret not buying it. I have to edit my review because of the WONDERFUL service I got there today. I tried on a sale dress (which was final sale) and loved it so I had the girl put it at the register while I looked around. When I got home the zipper was broken I came back with it and asked though it was final sale if they could make an exception due to the circumstances. They did and they were incredibly sweet about and even apologized to me. In the end I ended up getting a different dress and a pair of earrings as a birthday gift. This place deserves six stars for the great people who work there. read more
