The clothes are expensive but what do you expect when you're paying for Nanette Lepore or Milly? The selection is great if you're willing to spend money and if not there's always the sale rack where I got a Cory Lynn Calter dress for $65. I have not experienced any problems with the sales girls there, for me they have always been very helpful and courteous. Also the accessories are reasonably priced and quite cute, I fell in love with a beautifully detailed cameo necklace and to this day regret not buying it. I have to edit my review because of the WONDERFUL service I got there today. I tried on a sale dress (which was final sale) and loved it so I had the girl put it at the register while I looked around. When I got home the zipper was broken I came back with it and asked though it was final sale if they could make an exception due to the circumstances. They did and they were incredibly sweet about and even apologized to me. In the end I ended up getting a different dress and a pair of earrings as a birthday gift. This place deserves six stars for the great people who work there. read more

The store has some great things but A. you can find most of it for half the price at LIT on Newbury and B. Mint's return policy is terrible. I would love to support small and local shops but not when you recieve bad customer service. I was told to go up a size on a pair of $200 J Brand jeans. I did and was very unhappy with my purchase after I had worn and washed the jeans. I was told they could shrink up and to be safe and go with the size 28. Since I was so unhappy with my purchase and knew I was past their ridiculous return policy of a few weeks, I decided to talk to the manager. The best they could do was offer me 30% off a new pair of $200 jeans. I think not! I called J Brand and explained the issue. Admitting I knew this wasn't the J Brand's fault, they were more apologetic about my experience at the boutique than Mint was. They offered to exchange the pair that actually fit me so I could feel confident in my fit. Now that is a GREAT company! read more

meh. i don't have a serious problem with this store's prices. they carry some brands that you can't find in a lot of other stores in harvard square (t-bags, michael stars, ella moss), but i've discovered that their selection is pretty much hit or miss, much like most of the vintage boutiques i frequent for far less loss to my wallet. i often am pulled in by the window display only to discover that there's not a whole lot in the way of interesting going on anywhere else in the store. the collection of clothing also lacks some serious continuity. last time i was in, i discovered some OK graphic-print minidresses a la the young jacki o hung next to what i imagine punky brewster might have worn to her debutante ball next to what my hippie-dippy aunt might wear on her big date with the recently-divorced organic farmer in town. but, is any of that really reason for such a starless rating? no. what IS reason for my boo-hiss rating is the staff. jesus, joseph and mary, these girls need to be given a serious lesson on being members of society. i don't mind being ignored or barely acknowledged when i walk into a store; honestly, i'm a sales-pressurephobe anyway. what i did mind was listening as the sales staff stood in a circle in the middle of the storeroom floor and proceeded to cut down every woman who walked out of the store who was not either dressed to the absolute nines or who wouldn't pass for "trendy." it was like eighth grade recess up in this joint. not only were they incredibly rude, ignorant, and sometimes flat out vicious, they were loud. incredibly loud. i used to drop a fair amount of cash here when something did happen to strike my fancy. no more, ladies. now i haul my ass to dress on newbury st. check it out instead. read more

I haven't decided if I'm allowed to ever show my face in Mint Julep again. Last time, I left there in sin. So, the story is...I had a party to go to and wanted to look a little special. I went with my roommate to try on some dresses. I grabbed a hot little pink number and took it to try on behind some awkward curtain in the corner, you know the curtain that everyone can see you naked through the slit? Anyway, my roommate came in to see it and confirmed that the dress was a bit too revealing...i.e. a 'no.' I wanted to look special, not slutty. I started to take it off when the zipper got totally stuck. The dress was something ridiculous like $300 however, the zipper prob cost 2 cents. It was a p.o.s. Thank god my roommate was there to help, we tried and tried for a good 5 minutes to get the zipper back down but it just kept getting more tangled with the fabric. We start struggling with it, doing everything we can to not hysterically laugh since everyone in the store would immediately wonder what the hell we were doing in there together for, giggling like high schoolers. Just when I was about to go out and ask for help because our fingers were starting to bleed, I bent down to grab something from my purse annnndd....zzzzzzp! The zipper completely separated! I obviously started panicking because I had totally fucked up this overpriced dress...and oddly enough, we still couldn't get the stupid dress off. 5 minutes later, I've gone from laughing to almost crying to wanting to vom and I was ready to just go and tell the clerk and she if she could get it off me. But we gave it one more go and I finally wriggled out after getting on my knees and having my roommate yank it over my head like a mom. Even with it off, the zipper was still stuck and now completely ripped apart...awesome. Normally I would never leave like that, without saying something. But I just couldn't stand to be in there for one more minute and was totally afraid they were going to make me pay for the shoddily made, ridiculously overpriced square of fabric. So I threw it back on the rack and briskly exited. So ya, I'm a bad person and I'm sorry mint julep. It is probably better if I never go back, my bank account will be a lot healthier. Sorry about the one star, but you can't charge triple digits for less than a yard of fabric. read more

Shhh! Do you hear that? It's the sound of money flying out of your bank account. I browse Mint Julep normally once or twice a season just to see what they have. All their clothes are interesting and smart looking and not skanky. Baaaht, TRE EXPENSIVE! OMG! I feel like a young version of Carrie Bradshaw when I traipse amongst their few racks and shelves of clothes. I did buy a pair of capris that were a paltry 49 bucks last summer (they were originally a lot more). This is my first Yelp review, and I'm writing it out of annoyance for a recent experience with Mint Julep. I pass Mint Julep daily on my walk to work, and the cuteness of the items inside are magnetizing, but I normally resist going inside due to the expensiveness of many of their items. I'm not saying their prices are always completely unreasonable -- they have cute stuff made by good designers. You'll pay what you'd expect to pay at a fancy-schmancy little boutique. Here's my major complaint, though: Mint Julep does not permit returns -- they only give store credit or exchanges. I understand that they are a small business, yadda yadda yadda. But, I am complaining about this policy because of a recent experience I had with MJ. I recently made a somewhat impulsive purchase -- it was a dress I had seen 3 months ago online and couldn't get out of my mind. And, it was perfect for an upcoming wedding I was going to attend. Plus, the label must have insane vanity sizing, because I fit into a size 4 (I'm normally a 6 or so) when I tried the dress on in the store, so for a variety of factors, I fell completely in love with this dress and convinced myself I needed to buy it on the spot. One day later, a friend sent me a link to the same dress that was OVER $170 CHEAPER ONLINE. So, I panicked. I was already feeling guilty for dropping enough money for a plane ticket to London on a single dress. I checked the Mint Julep website to see their return policy, noticed they don't allow returns, and then also noticed that they have an online store that DOES allow returns for a full refund. I was a bit miffed by the inconsistency in their store policy, so I called the store, explained my situation, and kindly asked if they would make any exceptions. They said no. And, they didn't really have any satisfying explanation for why they could not accept returns in the store when they could accept them online. Once again, I understand -- they are a small, local business, and I want to support that. And honestly, if the dress were even $50 or $75 cheaper online, I'd be ok with paying a bit more for the experience of being able to try on the dress in person and supporting a local business. But slightly over $170 is just too much of a price differential for me to feel good about purchasing from Mint Julep in the future. It really makes me feel like their goods are overpriced for no reason. And, it also makes me feel like they need to re-think their store policies if they want to keep loyal customers. read more

For sure overpriced but sometimes you can get a bargain at the sale rack. Like many reviewers already said, the prices for some of these things are a little cray- no name brands for 250 made from a polyester blend? Peaaceee! Though if you're into Nanette, Milly, or Tibi you'll most likely enjoy Mint Julep- they really do have some great dresses if you're willing to put out the $$. I'm giving it an extra star due to the atmosphere- while small, I think the store is adorable. Honestly, this is the store that got me more into boutique shopping- which is something I never really did before. The place is organized well and somehow they manage to fit everything comfortably in their rather small space. It's definitely cute and I like the vibe shopping here. The baskets on the floor are cool too- you can find some pretty nice tops in there for a more reasonable price tag if you look. Oh how I love this store. My only complaint is that its so small. I like my boutiques to be a bit larger....if you have more than three customers in there at a time its very hard to move around. Although I live 5 minutes from the Brookline location I've never been...but I can only hope that if its filled with even more great pieces! They have a good selection of party or semi party dresses which I love....and fun choices for other pieces. The price range is pretty good as well, they carry a wide variety of designers. Not really a fan. I'm always drawn in by the window display, but have never walked out with anything. The prices tend to be more expensive, but cover the whole range. When I have found something I would wear, it is generally over $250, and I don't like it enough to pay that price. In my quest to get interesting Boston-y gifts for a friend I'm visiting, I came upon Aunt Sadie's candles, which are sold, to a limited degree, in Mint Julep. I was happy to traipse on over there, having browsed it before I know that just like the titular drink this store is breezy, bright and fun. I agree that this place is expensive. BUT. When you consider that it's locally owned (by two fabulous and friendly young women), and that most of the designers are probably independent, I don't mind spending a little extra on beautiful, unique pieces of clothing. I know that anything I buy here won't show up on anyone else in my circle of friends. The thing I really appreciate about the store, though, is that the clothes aren't just for tiny undergrads (like Jasmin Sola). I've bought two cocktail dresses from Mint Julep, and both are among my favorite pieces. For somebody who gets dressed up often, I'm constantly looking for great dresses with something unique about them, and this great little boutique has stepped up to the plate more than once. My first experience was a little over a year ago. I came in with a particular style of dress in mind - something sexy and maybe a little edgy, but still feminine - and I needed it right away. I was browsing, pulling dresses off the racks (I tend to go for the try-on-a-hundred, find-one-perfect-one shopping approach), and finding a great variety of styles and colors. I happened to mention that I was shopping for a particular event (for that night, no less!), and the ladies told me that they had just gotten a bunch of brand new dresses in... then they grabbed the unopened boxes and started pulling dresses they thought I might like based on what I already had in my hind. Lo and behold, they actually had a dress EXACTLY like the one I had in mind - a black, rouched, strapless corsetted dress with a princess neckline. But then, they found one that was even better - a gorgeous teal and silver, Nanette Lepore dress, with amazing beadwork on the straps, bodice, and hem. This shop is fantastic - a great spot to find an outfit, especially a cute dress, just for fun or for a specific event. They carry a great mix of designers - from Nanette Lepore to BCBG to Tibi, Shoshanna, Milly, Plenty by Tracy Reese, Free People, Velvet...the list goes on. I think their specialty is dress selection - they have a great eye and carry limited inventory (~1 of each size per dress)...so act fast! As for the rest of their store, their accessories, scarves, jeans, and tees are also great. The girls who work in the store are SO incredibly helpful - checking in on you often and helping to provide suggestions and opinions given what you're searching for. If you order online they do not pay for returned shipping, they will only give you store credit and the quality of the dresses are very poor for the price. I brought a friend from out of town recently and she was super psyched to find a bunch of cozy sweaters & fabulous cocktail dresses all housed under one roof. Super cute shop! My mom and I stopped in after touring around Harvard just to change the pace up a bit and I bought some fun new jewelry. The two women who worked there were very friendly and their jewelry selection was just right...and in just the right price range! They also had a fabulous sale going on (most items were 50% off) but of course the sizes were quite limited. The full price clothing was a little pricey for me but very fun and fresh. I received a $30 gift card to this store as a gift and so I ventured inside; normally I would never walk into such a place because I can just smell the expensiveness from a mile away and even browsing would make me sad. It's very cute, lots of cute dresses, jewelry, and purses, but I just couldn't get over the prices. Some of the sale dresses were reasonably priced, (i.e. under $100) but mostly everything was quite pricey. I ended up buying 2 candles (which smell amazing by the way, and not horribly expensive at $16 each) and calling it a day. Mint Julep's merchandise is generally out of my price range, so I've only purchased a few things here. However, the staff is friendly and helpful even to people who are clearly just browsing. They are so enthusiastic about finding you something you look great in, and they seem to be having a lot of fun. The store is small, but well laid-out, well-organized, and rarely crowded (with people, that is...it's certainly crowded with fashionable clothing and accessories). I bought a pair of J Brand jeans here that wore out (I'm talking completely ripped in several places) after just two weeks of wear. Obviously this was a problem with the garment, and not Mint Julep, but they were so nice about it! I mentioned it to them the next time I was shopping there and they told me I could bring the jeans back and they would replace them. I had thrown out the jeans by then, though. Still, their friendliness about it made me feel certain that I would shop there again. Because Mint Julep is in the ever-busy Harvard Square, it's hard to find parking there, but sometimes you can get lucky and get a spot on its street. read more

Love this place. In a city, it can be tough to find places with unique items. Mint Julep is pricey (at least for my student budget), but I can come home with one item that I feel really good about knowing that I have something a little more original than something from the traditional Newbury St. chain stores. Mint Julep has inexpensive jewelry, colorful Orla Kiely bags, and fun accessories in addition to the great clothes. I like the one in Harvard Square better than the one at Coolidge Corner because the atmosphere seems brighter and the staff is always really friendly. read more

A lot of stuff in here is way overpriced; there are t-shirts for $60, and cardholders consisting entirely of two attached pieces of plastic for $20. That said, they have cute clothes, including dresses, and some cool jewelry. The other day, I saw a lovely floral print dress in the window that would work for an upcoming wedding, and discovered that it was $84 - worth trying on.
