i always love to hear when a popular boba chain in taiwan finally makes their way to america, specifically socal!! macu tea is one of the newer boba places in irvine and it's located in a nice plaza that houses a bunch of other shops and restaurants. it's a bit interesting to get there because the plaza/shop is located in the part of irvine that is mostly populated by businesses, and it is relatively close to irvine spectrum. it's not exactly a cafe as there isn't any seating inside other than a bench for waiting for your drink, but there are plenty of tables outside you can sit at and chat.
the plaza was pretty popping when we came here on a saturday afternoon but there was still plenty of parking, and there was no wait when we arrived at the shop but a few people sitting/standing around who already got their drinks. i was a bit hesitant on trying this place due to some of their drinks being fixed sugar, specifically their most popular smoothie drinks which looked soo enticing. but to my surprise, those drinks were not as sweet as i feared they would be!! one of the workers there was so kind as to give us a sample of their popular mango smoothie drink, as she had made too much for an order and didn't want it to go to waste. and it was honestly really good! it definitely tastes like drinking straight up mangos (and they do use fresh mangos, as you can see some boxes of mangos sitting off to the side), and it wasn't too sweet either! which is saying something because im the type of person to get my drinks a quarter or nonsweet. the workers were also really nice and helpful here, recommending me to get the chi chi strawberry instead of the new tiramisu strawberry drink they had, since they knew i didn't like sweet drinks and the tiramisu drinks are on the sweeter side.
so i ended up getting the chichi strawberry smoothie that is basically a strawberry smoothie with cheese foam on top and green tea jelly on the bottom. it was really good! i see why this is one of their popular drinks and i would recommend others to get this too, especially if they like strawberries. it wasn't too sweet nor too bland, and the consistency was perfect. the green tea jelly was surprisingly not sweet at all and a bit on the bitter side so you can totally taste the tea flavor. the cheese foam is also very creamy and a nice compliment to the strawberry smoothie.
my boyfriend got tieguanyin oolong milk tea with boba, which was another popular drink here and he liked it decently too. the boba here is made well, very chewy yet soft. the milk tea was also not too sweet despite him getting 100% sweetness but even then, we felt like the tea flavor was not as strong as it could have been. it kind of tasted a bit too milky or just like regular milk tea.
overall a promising new boba place in irvine! it is a little on the expensive side but it IS in irvine and they use fresh fruits. their milk teas could be a bit more tea forward, and it would be great if you could adjust the sweetness on the smoothies, but they still do make their drinks pretty well. bonus points that their workers are really sweet and helpful. i would definitely recommend their smoothies if you come here! read more
