Once the kitchen opened at 5 PM, we ordered the Pork Cracklins appetizer, Ruby Wedge salad (delicious house made blue cheese dressing and lardons), the Bone-in Prime Rib dinner (thick cut, tender, flavorful), and the Basque Pasta with Chorizo and Mussels (Basque chorizo, plus lots of succulent mussels). Entree's are big enough portions to share with plenty to spare. By the time we finished our meal, the restaurant and bar were packed with mostly locals. Great atmosphere. Epic service. We arrived before 5pm when dinner would be served. We sat at the bar and had a glass of wine. There are a lot of knickknacks to see behind the bar and on the walls. The bartender was friendly and prompt with service. There appeared to be many locals there. We were seated promptly for dinner. It took a bit for our server to arrive to our table, but once there she was friendly and informative. We started with the spring rolls. They were mushy on the inside. It appeared they were wrapped with dumpling wrappers that were soft on the inside and crunchy on the outside. We didn't prefer the texture. Hubby didn't like the sauce served with them but I did. We wouldn't order them again. We chose a spinach salad as the side to our entrees. It was fresh but overdressed. It became soggy very quickly. Hubby had the braised lamb shank special. He said it was fall off the bone tender. There were parts of it on the outside though that were too hard to chew, as if those parts had been outside of the braising liquid too long. The polenta was grainy and undercooked. Polenta should be smooth and silky. The sauce was too salty. I had the Basque Pasta. I asked the waitress if the mussels were fresh and she told me they were frozen. I never should have ordered the dish. The mussels were so dry and fishy tasting I couldn't eat them, and I love mussels. I even bit down on a couple of pieces of broken mussel shells. There was hardly any sauce so the noodles were dry as well. The cheese on top wasn't melted. I barely touched my dish. The servers, including ours, were working very hard and seemed to be providing everyone with great service. I'm giving 3 stars because of the food. I know it's a local fave, but we won't be back. read more

We were passing thru for the night & checked out Yelp for somewhere to have dinner. This had great reviews & was in walking distance to our hotel. It was a Monday night & they were very busy, they had a party of 12 but it didn't affect the service, it was great! I liked the cool, local vibe. The food was excellent, a great salad & we both got the "shrimp alfredo", not their name for it but that describes it. OMG, it was so good & I have never had so many shrimp in any dish that I've ever ordered...there were 9-10 pieces of jumbo shrimp, very generous! We got the carrot cake to share, it was unique, probably made in house but very good! We would come back here again if ever passing thru. read more

I love Machi's and their menu is so scrumptious with so many fun things to try. Having said this, I can't seem to stay away from the perfectly executed Bone in Prime Rib, enough to feed an army but hey...there is a warmth to Machi's that make you feel cozy and content. Great service usually happens at a great restaurant and no exception here. We brought fabulous wine, paid a reasonable corkage fee and all was well in the universe. We stopped in based in reviews on Yelp. The food and service was superb. We ordered the prime rib sandwich which had a slab of prime rib on it. Delicious. We are a fifth wheel family traveling from CA to CO and we looked up reviews for Machi's. It was one of the highest rated places to eat in Elko. We really needed a family friendly restaurant & I'm so grateful they sat us! Everyone loved their plates, generous servings, great prices, great quality, staff was SUPER nice, and it was very clean. 10/10 recommend. Long road day on the tail end of a ten day road trip. 11 1/2 hours and 738 miles since we got in the car this morning. Four states later we're tired and hungry. Looking for a place where the locals go. Here. It's only 5:30PM and we're thinking we're ahead of the crowding curve. Not so. Restaurant filled. My husband says to the server, "Do folks eat early in Elko or is it always busy here?" The answer is, "Both. We have daily specials and everyone likes them so much they come early to be sure we don't run out before they get here." With an intro like that, must order the special. On Monday it's long bone beef short ribs with smashed potatoes and braised carrots. We wait for the allegedly irresistible while sipping an incredible lemon drop. I didn't hear any complaints from Sapphire Gin & Tonic man. But we're both road destroyed. We have to eat to know 1) if we're out of the car yet, and 2) that this place is really *that* good. It is delicious. We can easily see why on Mondays, at least, folks beat feet here. I couldn't plow through that much meat, as tender and flavorful as it was. I might've salted a bit more but that's a personal preference thing and these were easily the most meaty and tasty short ribs I've had. So - do I go for the trifecta? I've imbibed. I've eaten plentifully. Do I order the carrot cake made from the 80 year old secret recipe? What kind of question is that?! Of course I do. The secret carrot cake (which the owner's wife makes, and then the servers text her for more when they need it) is served warm. It's kind of a cross between carrot cake and bread pudding. Super moist and dense with a glaze on top reminiscent of sassafras and served with a dollop of whipped cream cheese frosting on top. Not what I was expecting but then again I wasn't expecting a crowd at 5:30PM or that I'd order short ribs. Both of those things happened and it all worked out great. So did the carrot cake. Service friendly and efficient. Good recommendations. Kinda cool to see the barkeeps dash out from behind their territory to help seat and serve while they continued to make drinks and serve dinner to those eating at the bar. That's how a fam operation works. I've chronicled most of the food on this road trip and every time we've stopped at a local place, followed the local trail, we were well pleased. Because we've been dining here for years, there's nothing on the menu I haven't tried, and there's nothing that I've not liked or loved. The Ruby Wedge salad is the bomb, and so are John's nightly specials. These range from braised lamb shank over polenta to prime rib (bone-in if you get there early enough) and the bestest mashed potatoes. If you leave here hungry, it's probably your own fault. Try it! This place is an absolute gem! We stopped in on our cross country road trip and it was a highlight. I'm not sure what was better, the food or the service, it was top notch! We ordered their special dinner of the day, which was chicken over vegetables. It was the most tender chicken I have ever had and had amazing flavor. The portions are large so plenty to share. We started with their spinach dip, it was so flavor and served with toasted bread as opposed to chips, which we love. We sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with the bar tender, so friendly and had great conversation. There's plenty of seating here but they sure stay busy. Machi's is a good little restaurant/bar situated in downtown Elko. The dinners included a nice house salad and yeasty dinner rolls. Service was average not the best not the worst. Had to ask for water and ice tea refills. The dinners were good but not great. On the upside they're open past 8:30 and likely your best option then. read more

I was invited by friends to a dinner at Machis, and since I'd never been there, I was super excited to try it! This particular night we were a party of about 14 people, so my review will be on how well the restaurant handled such a large group as well as the quality of the food. After we all arrived and were sat, the waitress immediately came to take our drink orders. We all got something alcoholic (besides the kids lol) but were saddened to hear there was no fireball. So I decided on a rum and Coke for my drink with dinner, and tequila for my shot. Everyone else got something called a Water Moccasin shot. After that the waitress came and brought bread to the table and took our food orders. I ordered the Wednesday special, Lamb Shank with Cheesy Polenta and it came with salad. My son ordered the Taco Salad. The food came out very quickly for how big a table we were and my lamb shank was SUPERB! A huge, falling off the giant bone, tender and beautifully cooked lamb shank in a stew like sauce with stewed veggies and bright green peas over delicious cheesy polenta. Man. This plate was absolutely heaven. The Salad and bread were a plus but that shank was to die for. Finally we ordered the Carrot Cake. This warm, bread pudding consistency carrot cake was absolutely amazing. So delicious. That being said I believe between the quickness we received our dinner, smoothness in which everything went for how big our party, and how good the food was...Machis deserves the five stars and I will definitely be back for that lamb shank again. read more

My colleagues and I came into town and stumbled into Machi's for dinner. At first glance we were not expecting much at all but we found ourselves extremely, yet pleasantly, surprised! You find yourself in a room split into two: a bar and a dining area. It's a very low key-casual atmosphere with no frill dining. The wait staff were extremely friendly and were always ready to assist with anything you might need. The food was on another level. Though it might seem to be a lot on the menu, you have to check out their daily specials. Sitting in a cozy room, you get to see what others are having and I followed suit with what everyone else had. Portions are exceptionally hearty and served with bread rolls and a salad! Spent one night in Elco NV . Wanted a local restaurant experience. We chose this place because we were impressed with the menu and the yelp reviews were positive. The patrons we met at this establishment were very friendly and all were local residents. The place was very busy, a good sign, we had to wait approximately 15 minutes before we could be seated. My wife ordered the small prime rib dinner. I wasn't very hungry so I had the wedge salad, expecting that my wife would not be able to eat all of her dinner. The food was outstanding! The portions were more than generous. The servers were outstanding and very friendly and helpful with our food choices. After dinner, one of the patrons recommended that we try the carrot cake, which he extol was made by the owner, a mature woman who was sitting at the bar visiting with patrons. So on her suggestion, we ordered the carrot cake to go. I might mention it was delicious too. We ate it in our hotel room. All in all and outstanding opportunity to meet local people and have an outstanding dinner. We have relatives in Idaho Falls so we'll be driving by frequently. We came here about 6pm on a Friday night. The bar was completely full but there were a few tables open and we were seated right away. We decided on the sausage and cheese tortellini appetizer but soon after ordering she came out and told us they were out. Disappointing, how is a restaurant out of something at 6 p.m. on a Friday night? My wife ordered the clam linguini and I decided on the "Big old plate of spaghetti" with Italian sausage. We also ordered drinks. The only IPA either on tap or in a bottle was Sam Adams. A suggestion would be to carry a wide range of local or regional beers. Our salads were delivered shortly after with a basket of warm yummy bread. Both the salad and the bread were delicious! Our entrees were delivered in a timely fashion and looked amazing! The spaghetti had fresh grated parmesan and was loaded with Italian sausage. The sauce tasted amazing. My wife absolutely loved her linguini with clams!!! It was also loaded with clams, was seasoned perfectly and served piping hot. It was perfect! The service was very good and we felt taken care of. Only wished we had room for dessert. We both feel our dishes were a solid five, however, due to the lack of beer selection and the fact that they were out of the appetizer that we wanted to order we are giving it a four overall. It's always nice to find a good place to eat while on a road trip! We were returning to Reno from Salt Lake City and planned to stop for lunch in Elko as it is the approximate half way point. Yelp provided several promising leads and since we had Italian the night before we chose Machi's Saloon as the place to pull over at and have lunch. I was drawn in by the photo of the Linguine with Clams, but alas they were not on the menu that day, but the Prime Rib Sandwich was on the special board so we both ordered it along with the soup of the day. The soup was a nice creamy potato soup and the sandwich had a thick piece of Prime Rib along with a dude of horseradish and au jus. Overall it was a tasty filling stop on a long drive We even got ice tea for the road which is always nice.
