Our '05 family van failed smog during Round 1, but the technician kindly pointed out a few systems that could be tuned to improve the engine performance. He also told us he would retest for free within 15 days. After we changed out the spark plugs, the engine ran more smoothly. We took it back in and he re-tested it. That did the ticket, and we're off to the races, errr, our lovely Bay Area freeways. The test was about $90, plus the $8.25 state fee. Just as a note, since I was paying the state fee separately (after the retest), he requested that be paid in cash. It is a small shop, but it gets the job done. There is an outdoor seating area for you while you wait. We found the technician was kind throughout. Really really bad one, I did the first time smog check in this" test only station", I find it from the DMV list since it is near to my house, but it is really bad , at that time he says that my smog is fail and charge me $49 (with cupon)and then he says that I need to pay $29 for the 2nd test after i fix my car. Later I ask my friends , everybody says that they didn't need to pay the 2nd test if fail for the fist time!!! Also I change to another Test only station in oakland, my car pass the test!!! It just cost me $40 totally!!!So I need to bring up this for everybody!!!!!!!!! read more

For the last 10 years my vehicle has passed smog at MacArthur Smog with the same aftermarket catalytic converter. This time it failed to pass and the attendant told me I had the wrong catalytic converter and he couldn't pass it. I paid $99.00 for the failed test. I was told if I returned within 15 days a retest would be $8.25. I went to the muffler shop and they suggested getting a DMV referee review. I returned to MacArthur Smog and explained that the review was going to take longer than the 15 days he gave me for the retest. The attendant told to me that I was a good returning customer and he would work with me. I got a new catalytic converter installation after the DMV review and returned 3 weeks later for the retest. The attendant told me that a retest would be 50.00 plus the $8.25 certificate fee. He said it would cost me more that that anywhere else. I finally agreed to pay $40.00 for the retest and certificate. I will not be returning to MacArthur Smog for service again. read more

I took my older minivan in to be tested. Just as the test was finished, the state's system went offline, making it impossible for the mechanic to print my certificate. Not his fault! The next morning he called to tell me the system was back up and could I come back. I went back, and he had a stall waiting for me. The shop is small and clean, and the mechanic is polite and has a great sense of humor. He quoted a price to me before the test--$90 is in line with other places I've gone to in the area. Call before you go--it's a one man show, and he steps out sometimes. read more

I went into this business to get my car smogged. I had printed out a coupon to save $30 on a Star Test Only. I handed the person my registration and the coupon. He said it was for year 2000 and above. I stated, "Sorry, I didn't notice." Then he said, "If you don't like the price, go somewhere else." I said, "There's no need to be rude." He became enraged and started screaming, "You mother f**ker", "You mother f**ker","You mother f**ker", and on and on. I am a disabled senior and I was frightened. I said, "There's something wrong with you, you are sick." He just kept raging on with his degrading comments. I can't review on the service because the guy never showed up! The website says hours are 8am-6pm weekdays, I called a few days ago to confirm the hours and he said he gets there at 9am. I was there at 9:05am this morning, waited 20 minutes but he never showed. I called 3 times and got voicemail every time. If you can wile away your day waiting for him to show up then this might be the place for you. I couldn't wait any longer so I went somewhere else who got me in and out in 15 minutes. As we speak, my husband is on his way back from attempting to get our car smog-checked. In the first attempt to smog-check the car, the catalytic converter sensor was throwing an error message. Adem stopped the test because the error came up. He told us to get the car fixed and then bring it back. Fair enough. My repair shop (separate from MacArthur) recommended we contact the CA Bureau of Automotive Repair Referee program. After we followed several steps, the Referee told us the next step was to have the car re-tested by MacArthur Smog Check and to have them actually pass or fail the car. If the car passed emissions, then I would get my tags. If not, we'd move on to hard repairs. Adem refused to do the emissions test because of the ongoing catalytic converter sensor issue. Full stop. No explanation. End of story. No matter how much we tried to make him understand this direction was coming from the Referee. He simply failed us without moving on to emissions. In short: if your car throws an error message, and the California Bureau of Automotive Repair Referee program provides a direction along the lines of "run the test anyway," then 1) abandon the process, 2) just get the car fixed, 3) take it somewhere else to get smogged. read more

I had a great experience here! The first time I brought my ford ranger in to be smoged, it failed. However, they were very helpful in letting me know tune issue that needed to be fixed, and did not charge me for the first test. After I had the problem fixed, I returned and they took care off me and the truck passed! Very bad customer service. I pulled up, I got out, I was friendly, I asked how much the smog check would be, he took a coupon from my hand which also had my DMV document behind it. He said the smog was $90 with the coupon it would be 60. I just told him that I would have to think about it and maybe come back and he got aggressive, angry, began to raise his voice, he said why and I asked for my paperwork back and he held it above his head and wouldn't give it to me and kept asking why why and I said I really can't afford that price right now and he yelled at me and said how do you expect me to make a living, he repeated it more than once, and I had to get on my tippy toes to grab my paperwork out of his hand. Very unprofessional. I had other people tell me that their smog was more in the $40 range, I didn't see any prices listed in his business. By the way my car is 10 years old, and I found another smog business in San Leandro that was friendly and kind and courteous and professional and they had prices for their various services listed. Unlike the 1st review, mine was totally different. I called them up to check on the cost. They asked if I had a coupon, I said no, they said no problem, we'll provide you one. I asked what the cost was going to be and they said $49. I questioned them with "is that the out the door bottom line cost" and they said yes. I showed up, waited 10 minutes and they took me in for the test. He gave me a estimate of $49 plus fees & certificate that equaled $59. I said " you told me out the door, $49". He said oh yes, I did. So, he changed the coupon discount from $30 to $40 and my out the door cost was $49. He was a pleasant guy, performed the test in 10 minutes, I passed and was done. It was a 5 star visit for me. I had the smog certificate in about 30 minutes, from start to finish. I have lived in the area for a while and my wife and I want to support local businesses when we can. I have a German Repair Shop in San Leandro, but do not perform smog checks. I have a personal car that needed a smog check and decided to give this place a try. I called first and he said they had 1 car in front of me, so if I could wait about 20 minutes he would take it. I got there just when the other car was finishing up, so he was able to get to it pretty close to when he said he would. The parking and access is a little tight on the parking lot, as they also sell gasoline there but the owner made sure I got in and out of his bay without any incidents. He was quick and courteous and a pleasure to work with. Definitely will use him again. Prices are about average for a full service smog guy. read more

Won't go back. We took two cars in for a smog test, they both passed. We called to check price. $50.00 for each car was quoted on phone after explaining that we had a Honda Pilot and VW Eos. Checked website and there was a $30.00 off coupon. After smog we were told it would be $80.00 for SUV and $60.00 for Car. Did not honor coupons. Charged us $100.00. I am only giving MacArthur Smog a 2 star rating because he was up to standard when my wife first brought our SUV in for a smog check. It failed because of a bad part which we then fixed. Since then I've tried to bring it back 2 times after 4p and 2 times just after 8a with no luck. He was always closed even though the hours on the business card say 8-6. I ended up taking it to another establishment. $50 wasted! My suggestion would be to go somewhere else, but it you do have to go here then call first to make sure he will be there when you're trying to come in. read more

I've had good experiences in the past at MacArthur smog, so I'm giving 1 star. Recently I took a second car in and the car didn't pass. I didn't know until afterwards that If my "check engine" light was on it would be an automatic fail, and they didn't bother to tell me either. The fee was $81. + certificate fee. but I received $30 off because it was my second car. I was told the retest would only cost $10. and it is written on the receipt. I had to get work done on the car and then drive the car for a bit prior to taking it back. I stopped in today, and was treated so rudely. He told me that the retest fee was only valid for 30 days. No where on the receipt is a time limit. I also questioned him about the initial smog check if the engine light was on. His response was that I could call the State, by law he didn't have to tell me anything. I may drive back tomorrow and see if there is a different person working. If so, and they accept to retest my car I will change my review. if not, I will be calling the State and Better Business to report them. read more

I was treated very courteously despite being 10 minutes later than I said I would be and then getting into my car without paying after the smog check was done! The owner did not perform a prescan for engine codes before performing Smog. My Smog failed due to an engine code that did not register on the dash. He charged me $42.50 with a retest fee of $29.99. I have had many Smogs performed this a place to stay away from. read more
