Just went back to Smog Dog, as I go every other year for a smog check for my 2001 Toyota Corolla. Always excellent, fast service. Jorge I. did the smog check. Very courteous, friendly, and professional. Very happy with his service and kindness. Just wanted to express my appreciation! Thanks, Jorge! David M Alameda read more

I went to get a smog here. The Smog Tech's name was "George" (a male Hispanic in his 50's, heavyset, white mustache, and goatee). As I was waiting for my vehicle, I observed George open my vehicle door and hit a metal stand. As I went to check for any damages, George became incensed and rudely told me to just stand there and watch him to make sure he did not damage my vehicle. I attempted to explain to him that it wasn't anything personal; however, I had the right to check my vehicle for any damages (dents and scratches). George repeated himself and told me to stand behind my car to observe him to make sure he did not incur any damages to my vehicle. I am a customer trying to get a vehicle smog. I agreed to the $88.00 smog; however, I did not agree to being treated so rudely. To make matters worse, he told me to "get out!" And then he told me to "Make like a tree and leave" (wow, that was original). "George" recorded me on his cellphone of my departure. I have done nothing wrong, I understand businesses have the right to refuse service; however, it is perplexing to think that an employee of this business is allowed to treat customers so rudely then tell them to "get out!"? It's OK, I will never patronize this business. It's obvious that "George" has done this to other customers because he doesn't understand basic customer service because of his perceived slight and lack of communication skills. His actions will have a detrimental effect on revenue. I will have my car washed and check my door for any damages. Besides being a bit pricey for a smog check, unfortunately, this business is unprofessional due to an employee named: "George" who thinks it's OK to be rude to customers because he possesses no interpersonal skills of communication. read more

This review is on behalf of my bf who came to the shop for a smog check. He initially went to another shop and was advised that since he recently changed the battery for his car, they couldn't do a smog check because replacing the battery cleared the computer's internal emissions readiness monitors. They said drive a few more miles (~100) and things should be okay. There was no charge for this. A few weeks later he goes to Smog Dog and the mechanic there said what the previous shop told him was bs, he implied they were incompetent and told him to leave the vehicle so they could do the smog test. He returns a few hours later and Smog Dog told him the exact same thing!!!! My issues: the first shop took my bf's contact info and told him almost immediately that they could not the smog check. There was no charge. Smog Dog was sooo confident that they could do the job that they didn't take his contact info, leaving him to wait several hours only to return and be informed that the job could not be done. These people had the audacity to still charge him $79!!!! .. gave the same advice as the previous shop AND told him if/when he returns (and they're able to do the smog check) they'll ONLY charge him an additional $30. This was a waste of time, a waste of money and terrible customer service. read more

Rep today (middle aged male) on October 12th 2026 was really rude. Note I've been here before and had good service but today was not a good day for this guy or this business. read more

I needed a smog check and the dog delivered. At first my car didn't pass but nor did it fail. The mechanic on duty was very patient explaining that I don't drive it enough and suggested I go for a long, long ride, which I did. The car passed, I got my license plate stickers, and I'm good for another two years. read more

This year I've brought two vehicles for smog check. Both times, each tech was friendly and performed the service quickly within an hour. Smog dog is well worth a visit and I'm continuing to bring all my cars here for any smog checks and I recommend them to all my family that it's a great value. read more

No non-sense service. I went in, car was tested, and I left in record time. It felt like 10 minutes and I was done.

Fast. Cheap. Great service! Have taken two cars here over the last 3 years, been good every time.

I just moved onto the island and was looking for a new spot to get my smog. I work 2 blocks away and was hoping this would be the spot! I got off at 5 and got there at 5:04 with my car. They close at 5:30. Dude goes "tmrw" laughing as I pull up. I thought he was joking so I was laughing too. He was serious. He said if I came before 5pm (so 5 minutes earlier) he would've smogged my car. My 2014 vehicle. That takes 15 minutes to smog MAX. I couldn't take bro serious I had to just leave without responding so I wouldn't bust out laughing in his face. What a joke. Go down a few streets to Alameda Smog. It's cheaper (by 30$ only paid a total of $49 at alameda smog!) AND I had time to drive from smog dog down there and still got my smog done driving off before 5:25pm Personal note for the lazy dude working on this fine Wednesday at 5pm: if you aren't taking cars after 5pm and the lot is empty, close the garage, whats the point of sitting there on your phone and only getting up to tell people you don't wanna do the smog? read more

Quick, same day service, friendly owner. No mess. Easy peasy. And affordable. Do not pass Go. Go here.

The communication has been subpar. I've come to do my retest three times now and we'll have to come back a 4th time as their machine is down. I understand machines go down, but they told me to call in the interim to see if they would be there and to check if the machine was working and nobody answers and nobody returns my phone message. This has spent a lot of time and gas going back back-and-forth across Alameda checking in to see if they are present and open, and the machine is working, because they can't answer the phone or return a phone call I'm here again for the third time. I've asked twice if they can still use the $20 coupon and both Jorge and Lee who are technicians say no that it's not possible. But I told them that on this coupon it doesn't specify when it can be used so it's very misleading. And I would hope that after all my coming back-and-forth and back-and-forth and poor communication, they could be on the side of me the customer and offer the coupon. And then in the future, they can specify on the website that it must be used at the first testing.. They told me I would need to ask Carl, who is the owner. I asked how I can contact Carl and they can't give me that information. Instead, both have told me to call later but again they don't answer the phone or return phone calls. I'm very frustrated with the experience and may need to start seeking another smog service in the future . Update: after expressing my frustration with poor communication, the person at the smog shop made sure to answer the phone every time I called. Finally they got the machine working and I brought my car in and he honored the coupon on their website. read more

both the guys who work here are fantastic!extremely helpful-and knowledgeable-i was in and out-we take all our cars to be smogged here

I never knew getting my car smogged could so painless. George was super nice and was very empathetic in getting me quickly in and out because I was traveling with my old dog. I also witnessed him take the time to provide information for another customer whose catalytic converter needs to replaced on how to get funding from the state. read more

And, it's two years later, so of course my car needs another smog test. Same great experience as last time--no wait, prompt service, friendly staff! They also have a coupon on their website, which makes the already-reasonable price an even better deal! I greatly appreciate that they take the tedium out of this biannual chore. read more

Another successful smog check done at Smog Dog. This place is great. Quick and easy, no appointment needed, great service, and reasonable pricing. Glad to have this place in town. read more

I brought my car in for a smog check and they messed up the mileage (overstating it by 50k)! I called to ask them to correct it because it's impacting my ability to sell the car, and what's their solution? Bring it back in for another smog check that I have to pay for. No refund, no accountability. No thanks. read more

They open at 8:30. It's 9:15 and no one has shown up. Would not recommend this unreliable business that wastes people's time

I got there early on a Saturday and was out within 15 minutes. Honored their online coupon with no hesitation.

Really impressed with Smog Dog. Dropped in at 10:10 AM Tuesday with someone ahead of me and I was out of there in 30 minutes. Printed out the coupon from their website. Brian had it down to a science, running one customer's smog while processing another's paperwork. He gave me the right estimate for how long it might take. He also took the time to go over what to expect with the DMV and when to call. Really thorough job. He even returned my call after missing it. I hadn't even left a message or anything. Definitely coming back for the great and fast service. read more

Definitely recommend going in the morning and not around lunch to avoid the crowd. Great service and friendly personnel. Took them 30 minutes like they promised although I did arrive late to pick up my car. read more

Longtime customer, first review. New owner possibly--still excellent, quick & personable service as always. I dropped by for a smog check, there was one person ahead of me. The tech/owner advised me my car would be ready in 35 minutes. I took my grocery bags and walked down the street to Alameda Marketplace to do some shopping. When I returned in 35 minutes, my car was ready and waiting for me. Painless! Also I had a screenshot of the coupon (for 2000 & newer cars) on my phone and he accepted it, no problem. read more

I came around 430-5pm, and George was able to get me in right away. He said 30 mins, but i really think it only took 15-20 minutes. I'm not sure of what other service is provided but i went in for a smog. I checked in, and got a $20 off the service. My total came out to $68, pretty standard nowadays and for the location. It was quick, no line (Tuesday at 2 pm definitely helped); it took 5-10 min, pleasant person.

PRO-TIP: Print out the coupon their website for $20 off before you go. This is a solid smog place. Very reputable. They are open Monday through Friday during business hours. Dee did my smog , he was super helpful & so nice ! I'll definitely be coming back to him.

Absolutely outstanding service! My Honda needed to complete the drive cycles so that I could pass smog due to replacing my battery. I took my car back to Smog Dog several times before the drive cycles cleared, and each time the shop checked my readiness prior to doing the smog or charging me. Finally passed, and the service was quick and easy. Was not over charged or charged extra to check the drive codes. Extremely polite and helpful, which is what anyone looks for in auto shops of any kind. Highly recommended shop. read more

Having recently received my car registration notice, I needed a smog check. I checked Groupon and saw an offer for Alameda Smog Dog. That was timely as I got a deal and will be supporting one of our local businesses. Drove up around 2:30pm on a Wednesday and briefly waited in the waiting room before Kevin came in, reviewed my DMV paperwork and checked me. He said the wait would be about 15 minutes. In about 20 minutes, I paid the $8.25 CA certification fee, which wasn't included with the Groupon, and was on my way. Kevin's service was friendly and efficient. Glad to be supporting a hometown business. Also, they have complementary bottled water as you wait for your service. read more
