DO NOT GO HERE!!! This used to be my go to place for smog, but the last couple of visits were very frustrating and ended up costing me unnecessary money. Both times my vehicles were in good condition and should have easily passed. However, the technician was searching around for any small issue and manually entered something into his system that caused a failure, then required me to return and pay additional $28 for a retest. Which I'm not going to do. After the most recent incident, I went to another smog shop and the car passed without any problems. I'm familiar with cars, and based on my experience I can tell you that "visual inspection" is 100% BS. I will not be returning. read more

The smog station is right off the freeway next to Trader Joe's. The smog station is connected to the 76 gas station. Roberto was nice, informative & helpful! They are Star certified which is important for the DMV. I paid $68 for my car to be smogged. This will be my go to guy for a smog from now on. read more

This place is a scam. When I first got in he tried to charge me 70. I said I thought there was a deal to then he said there is but he don't advertise the deal. Then my car failed the smog because of the drive cycle. He offered to resmog it for 30 even after making me pay. I was under the impression most smog shops give you a free retest before 90 days. I can imagine this would be a nightmare to get in and out of on at a busy time, as it is on the corner of Lakeshore at a major light, near the parking lot for Trader Joe's that everyone is trying to get into. I called because I wanted to check if it was a busy or a good time to head over, but no answer, just an automated message that it's first come, first serve. The person who did my smog test was unfriendly. I'm not expecting you to chat with me about the weather, but his tone was really brusque and he acted impatient with me when I politely him to repeat himself. It was very loud with car noise all around and I couldn't hear his response as to whether I was supposed to pull the car into the garage area or leave it where it was parked. He asked for paperwork, told me fifteen minutes, and then turned away. I do appreciate that it was done quickly in about ten. However, when I came back, he just handed me the credit card machine to pay. He didn't even hand back my keys and paperwork, so I had to check and grab them from the table where I saw they were placed. No response when I thanked him and said happy new year. Fortunately this isn't something I have to have done often, but I'm not inclined to go back. read more

As usual, waited till last minute to perform my smog check and Googled for a Star testing station. Luckily found 76 Oakland (they also have a MacArthur location) and an online coupon to keep the cost just below $50. Very friendly and professional technician (tester?) got me in and out within 15 minutes. Great location too as I was able to do a bit of grocery shopping at the Trader Joe's right next door. LOVE this place! I have an older car, and most smog places I go to won't even test it. Mind you, this car gets great gas mileage (better than a lot of newer cars, frankly) and still passes smog, so it's not like I'm driving some gas-guzzling, carbon-farting behemoth. Great spot to get your smog check done quick and at a great price. Coupons are definitely the way to go and it's quick, friendly service. Drop off your car, go to nearby shops for coffee or food and the wait time is nothing. DMV notified immediately, new sticker on and I was good to go. Best experience I have ever had for a smog check. I had to bring my car back several times due to the car computer not calibrating for the check. The staff were helpful, friendly, and prompt, every time. They charged a discount for the final recheck but charged me nothing for the times the car didn't calibrate. I appreciated their help through a frustrating situation. Super nice guys all around. My car passed for decades and it passed again, but this guy decides to do a visual of the catalytic converters and based on that failed my car. This is something no one else did. As a result I bought another car and at another 76 station they passed its smog without even looking at the catalytic converters. AVOID THIS PLACE! And the owner writes "no hard feelings"? It cost me thousands of dollars in lost vehicle value for a test that passes but then fails only on the merits of his "visual", something that others do not do. read more

The advertisement on the street of $39 is exactly what they charge plus the $8.25 state certificate fee. There was no up-charging of any sort with my 2008 car. Don't recommend this place for older cars. My car is a 20+ year old Toyota, but I keep it maintained and it has passed smog every year. 76 Oakland Smog on Lakeshore failed it even though the emissions test was fine just because the inspector here couldn't see a serial number on the catalytic converter. This is the same catalytic converter that has been on my car since I purchased it 15 years ago. No other shop has ever failed my car for this reason--again, it's an old car, old part, but it works for the purpose intended. I am not sure why this shop couldn't pass the car when all the other shops I've taken the car to have passed it, but now that it's failed, I'm looking at having to replace a perfectly functional part that is worth more than the value of my whole car. Tl;dr: This place might be fine if your car is new and has its original catalytic converter, but beware if you have an older car and/or aftermarket catalytic converter. I am giving them a second star for politeness and making sure we had the info for how to contact the state referee. read more

I stopped by today to see if they had availability for a smog check. There wasn't an obvious place to pull over and park so I pulled in behind the mechanic's bay just to ask if they had time to do the smog check. The very surly mechanic came over and pointed at the car in the bay up on a lift. I nodded and said I just wanted to see if he had availability to do a smog check. He started waiving his arms and yelling at me that he had a car in the bay and wouldn't be able to get it out now. Mind you, I was still sitting in my car and had not turned my engine off. The car he was working on was still up on the lift. I was not preventing him from rolling that car out. I told him there was no need to be rude and I just pulled up to check in with him. He then told me he could do the smog check and to park behind another car but he was so rude the whole time and by that time I was done. I don't need to be yelled at for no reason. I spoke with the attending certifier, "Koch." I was very impressed with how cordial and professional he was. A few minutes later, I observed him interacting with someone else. They needed a service that his center did not provide. In a very kind, attentive, and thorough way, he told them about an option within a few miles, gave them directions, and gave them a few pointers. I commented on how wonderful his attitude was. He noted that he didn't even know the owners of the center to which he had directed them. He had just heard good things about them from other customers and wanted to help out someone in need. Our interaction was only a few minutes. Nonetheless, it was one of those uplifting moments to experience someone generating such kindness in a matter-of-fact way - while also being exceptionally professional. As for the service: he certified me in lightning speed, electronically emailed the certification to DMV, reminded me to keep my written certification just in case DMV had problems on their end, and the price was great.
