*****************OPEN LATE********************* On a recent trip to Galax, VA. the Mr., son and I arrived around 9pm. We flew in from Los Angeles and drove in from Charlotte so it was a full days travel before we made it into town. By the time we got in we were starving!!! When we checked in to our hotel (check out my Knights Inn review) we learned that just about everything shuts down at 9pm. And this being our first time there we were in awe at how "dead" (in a good way) the town was. So, being that Macados was one of the only restaurant/bars open till 1am we decided to go check it out. The restaurant itself is located in the center of town and when we passed by, on our way to our motel, we would have never known it was still open. Inside you find a lot of vintage toys and memorabilia, very nostalgic and of course down memory lane we went, which was really nice. The service was a bit slow being that the place was not packed at all, at least not for LA standards. Any how, we all ordered sandwiches. I wish I could give this place a better rating, but the food was just OK, really nothing to brag about. It certainly did the job at satiating our hunger and we were certainly grateful, but nonetheless it was just OK. And as previously mentioned the service was ok. It took a while for our server to get to us, then it took another while for our food to be ready and finally it took still yet another while to get out check. So, after getting there about 9:45pm we didn't get out till about midnight considering the fact that we did not take very long eating our food. I don't know I suppose we will go back at a different time and see how things turn out then. read more

I called in an order at the new Bluefield, VA location and was told it would be ready in 15 to 20 minutes. I arrived within 15 minutes and was told my order would be ready in a few minutes that they were working on it. 5 mins later I was told it wouldn't be much longer. 15 minutes later I was told they lost my order and would I like to place it again. After serving three of our crew, our out-of-state friends were flat out refused service as they did not have "REAL ID'S." By out-of-state, we mean these guys flew in USING THESE ID'S. This Macado's location seems to be a little cleaner than some of the others I have patronized but unfortunatly it has the bad service that the others seem to have. The food is fine, mostly sandwiches, salads, mac and cheese, and lasagna. They also have some pretty good desserts. My only problem with this place is the bad service. Each time I have gone here I have felt like the wait staff viewed me as a bother, like they have better things to do than serve the customers. Ended up getting a slight case of food poisoning. Called the next day to inform the manager (we were up sick all night) who wanted to argue about it. According to the manager, there was no way the food could've made us sick; yet miraculously we both ended up that way after eating there & we both felt better after "evacuating" the food from our body. While visiting my folks over in Fries we came over here for lunch one day. Restaurants are few and far between up in this area, so I was surprised to find such a large one in the small town of Galax. We walked in on a weekday afternoon for lunch and it was moderately busy, with most of the staff's attention being paid to a large group that appeared to be congregating in the front for a meeting/function. We were seated promptly and handed these ridiculously long menus with countless items. After some perusing, though, the great majority were just different variations of sandwiches with catchy names. Our service was prompt and I ordered a "Sherlock Holmes" (mesquite turkey breast, melted cheddar, cole slaw, 1000 island, on wheat bread). The order was a little slow, but our server was helping with the growing group up front, so we were patient as we were catching up with our family. The sandwich was good - nothing groundbreaking - and filling. At this point, our service went from friendly and prompt to non-existent. Our drinks all went unfilled, and after at least 30 minutes of sitting there with dirty plates in front of us, my father had to go up to the front to get someone to give him the check and pay. A bad ending to a moderate experience. My parents swear they've have better experiences there, so we'll see what happens next time we're in town. read more

My family and friends were out on a motorcycle ride and decided to stop in for a bite and there was very few people seated at 3:40 in the afternoon. There was a couple people seated at the bar and after waiting 5-8 min to be seated the waitress took or drink order and I had to get up after 10 min to get or beer. We ordered appetizers at the the time our drink order was made and finally they brought the appetizers. Noticed 4 different tables received their food before the question was ask "Where's our food" after that we ask for the manager and still no food. After searching for a sit down restaurant around town that was open after 5:00 p.m. my family and I stopped at Macado's. We walked in and the bar tender looks up but doesn't speak. We move closer to the podium to be seated. After waiting for a bit, a blond waitress comes towards us, turns and makes her way to what I assume was the kitchen area behind the bar. After a bit, two other waitresses come up to the podium. Even though we tried to smile and say hello, they completely ignored us and started looking at the seating chart. One of them - a pretty blond with huge false eyelashes - points to the chart and says loud enough for us to hear, "Don't seat them here, I don't want 5 more people in my area." The other one makes a face and they continue marking things off on the chart and still neither of them speak to us. I have always came here and loved it! Today was a different story. The restaurant was empty and four of us ordered our food. They took forever to take the food out to us! I got a bobagger which includes steak, Munster cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, and mushrooms on French bread. First off, it looked like crap it had no meat on it but a bunch of mushrooms and only like 2 banana peppers. Then, it had no lettuce or tomato when I asked for no mushrooms! Never had a bad experience at a Macado until we decided to go to this one today. The worst part was the potato salad. It had a funny taste and smell. I only ate one bite, my boyfriend ate more but I asked for a box to take it home, in case we got sick we could have it tested. The wings were slightly burnt and definitely not worth the money considering there was barely any meat on them. The waitress was nice but got my order wrong. The sandwich was bland. And its one of my favorites that I get regularly from the Radford VA location. My boyfriend said his was awful and his coke had a funny taste. read more

Sometimes I like this place and sometines not, If they arent busy you will get waited on quickly, if they are be prepared to wait awhile. Same goes for food sometimes good, sometimes not. I usually get turkey trot and its good. The set up in restaurant is nice love all the old pictures and history. Bathrooms are clean. read more

Visited on June 7 for dinner. Fairly crowded and waitress was nice and served us in a timely manner. Food was good as usual. We like this place. Retuned on Sunday, june 13. Seated quickly. Maybe 4 -5 tables occupied. After 15 min we asked if we could order. No one had come to our table. Waitress, same one from June 7, said no had told her we had been seated even though she was waiting on a table 5 feet from us. Placed drink order and asked about wing special. She did not return to our table. After 21 minutes we decided to leave. Took menus and saw waitress carrying on conversation with another waitress who we had observed waiting on her tables in a timely manner. After giving our waitress our menus and told her we were leaving she said nothing! We really enjoy Macados and travel quite a ways to dine there but it seems they are set on going out of business. Obviously a management issue for waitresses to be delinquent in their duties. This was not a short staffing issue because they were not busy at all. Not the first time we've had issues here and probably won't return. We drove a short distance and had a great meal at El TORITO's. Seated quickly and waited on in a timely manner. I had lunch with a group of ten people. Two of us ordered the corned beef Reuben and we both agreed that these Reubens were probably the worst Reubens that we had ever eaten. First of all they were served almost cold; the meat was sliced unusually thicker than normal. There was a lot of gristle in the meat making bites impossible. On one half the sandwich the whole slice pulled out and the second half I chewed and chewed until the bite was pulled away leaving the gristle hanging. read more

Just left from a terrible dinner. We finished dinner and noticed black and pink mold inside of my ice. The waitress took a cube downstairs. The manager came upstairs to apologize, and offered a discount. When she saw that our card had been ran, she said "sorry does your daughter want a cookie instead?". I said no. She did not give a discount and said that they probably need to have their ice machines cleaned professionally. She apologized, but didn't seem to know how to reverse a charge. Beware of encapsulated mold in your ice! My three year old had ice in her drink too. I'm upset at how this manager handled this situation. read more

Had to wait 20 minutes to be seated even though we could see 5 empty tables. I ordered the Molly Brown. The bread was soggy because it was so saturated with mayonnaise. I literally scraped a tablespoon of mayonnaise off of half the sandwich before I finally gave up. The waitress was nice but the food wasn't really good. I don't mind paying for good food but it was way overpriced for food that wasn't really good. Probably the last time I will eat here. read more

One star is too much for this place! The tables were sticky. Service was slow. The waitress stopped by our table to say that our orders were in the window and she would go get the food. 10 minutes later she served us sandwiches with cold fries and tots. There were 3 customers in the whole place! My wife ordered a fried chicken sandwich. The breast was so small that we had trouble finding it! Then she hurt her teeth when she tried to eat it! Such a shame. The location is great, but I don't think that these guys are interested in making money. I won't be back until management and staffing change. read more

My wife and I have been to this Macados on three separate occasions. The only consistent thing we've found is that our rating gets lower each visit. Notably, every time we've been in we've experienced a dirty table and crumbs on the seats. Not deterred, we always give them a mulligan on that because they seem to stay reasonably busy and the staff is quite friendly and helpful. The food is basically a rehash of 1980's Bennigan style 'comfort' food. I had breaded shrimp and the operative word is 'breaded'. Far more breading than shrimp. If you like fried and breaded foods, you couldn't find a more appropriate setting...they do it with aplomb. My wife had a hankering for some avocado and ordered the Southwestern Fiesta Salad, which prominently listed avocado as an ingredient therein. Upon receiving it, she noticed there was no avocado to be found...none at all. We waited an obligatory 10 minutes for the waitress to return and, naturally, she did not. I ran down a friendly employee who retrieved her and we informed her of our dilemna with the missing avocado and she went to the kitchen to research it. She returned stating "We're out of avocado". No mention of what can I do to make it better, nor any mention of lowering the check amount to accommodate the missing ingredient. I want to like this restaurant, genuinely I do. I also believe in strongly considering all angles before posting a review that isn't positive. But Macados exhibits less than stellar customer service attitudes and simply isn't that accommodating. With as many good venues in our neck of the woods (Herrera's Vineyard, Putters @ Shelton, etc.) there is no reason to accept run-of-the-mill food with poor customer service. In their defense, one of the manager's was cleaning a table next to ours as we were exiting...she did ask how was our food and experience and I told her the very story I've outlined here. She asked, "Is that a deal breaker?" I told her it certainly lowered my Yelp rating and I was just being 100% honest and up front. But not a single word came out of her mouth as to what she could do to assuage me or help me be a happier customer. That friends, speaks volumes, doesn't it? read more

The parking was very sparse, but I did get a handicapped spot on the side. I'm glad I had my handicap placard with me. I would recommend to anyone. When we brought our concerns to the manager, a woman named Bonnie, we were dismissed and told we could have a discount or get bend.
