Went in looking for brisket, ended up with a stuffed potato. Turns out Little Richard's does not offer brisket. The potato stuffed with smoked chicken was quite good. The macaroni & cheese was good, but the portion was small. The menu mainly consists of pork and chicken entrees. The staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. I have elected to give Little Richard's 4 stars based their friendly staff. It looks like a typical Bbq joint and sits right by a Shell station. They have a huge menu. I decided on the pork bbq sandwich with bbq slaw. The pork was dry with very little seasoning and had too many fatty pieces. I had to load on the sauce, which they have several varieties. Their house sauce is served warm and I have never had it served that way so found that unique. My husband had the pork tray with cole slaw. He didn't love the BBQ either. I will say the Mac & cheese was legit- Creamy with delicious chewy topping pieces. The hush puppies were little crispy nuggets with good flavor. Where do I start? Unfortunately, this visit was a big step down from the great experience I had here last summer. The service was slow and not very good--maybe our server was just having a bad day, but it really affected the meal. When we sat down, we let our server know that the rest of our party wouldn't be joining us after all and that she could take our order whenever she had a chance. Her response: "I have other tables to wait on." Not sure why that needed to be said--it just felt unnecessary. We waited quite a while, and in the meantime, another table that arrived after us (with a different server) got their drinks and food before we even had our order taken. When our food finally came, I ordered the baby back ribs, but they were overcooked and dry--definitely not the quality I remember from before. My uncle ordered a chopped BBQ tray but got something completely different. When we were ready to leave, we couldn't find our server and actually had to ask someone else to track her down so we could pay. To top it off, I noticed an automatic service fee added to the bill, which was surprising considering the level of service we received. It's been a while since we ate here but stopped in today for a late lunch. There were only a few tables occupied so clearly the lunch rush was over. We were quickly seated and a waiter took our drink order. I thought maybe someone else would be our server as we waited for quite a while, which has always been something that doesn't happen here. Finally the waiter returned and took our order. After what seemed to be a longer than usual wait time I noticed a waitress at the pickup area looking at an order that I had seen sitting there for a while. She looked around for our waiter and was unable to get his attention so she was considerate to bring it to our table. Of course the fries were room temperature and the food barely warm. Since I just ordered a barbecue sandwich it wasn't a big deal but I did send the fries back. In a few minutes our waiter returned with fresh hot fries. When he brought our check I noticed a 3% Operational Fee added to the bill. This must be something new since we were there last. All in all this was not a very pleasant experience. I stopped in here passing through town while on vacation. The menu had plenty to choose from and the prices are reasonable. I had a hard time picking so I tried a sampler of three of their smoked meats, I chose pulled pork, beef brisket and baby back ribs. The dinner came with two sides and hush puppies, there were numerous choices for sides. The sides were typical southern fare including fried okra and collard greens plus many other choices, the hush puppies were made in house and were probably some of, if not the best I've ever eaten!! Everything was delicious and the servings were generous. We had a fantastic server who took great care of us. The dining area was very clean and neat and had some cool old antiques hanging on the walls. If you are in Mt. Airy NC. and want some great BBQ this is the place!!! read more

My wife and I regrettably visited Little Richard's yesterday. My 1/2 chicken had been reheated from a refrigerator. The oil in their fryer was way overdue to be changed out. This tiny tray was $14 after tax. I was quite disappointed with this to-go order. I can 2 to 3 times this amount of food for $10 elsewhere. The total was almost $35 dollars for two of these tiny trays and some hush puppies. They also now add a 3% surcharge to all orders due to the current state of the economy. I do understand the issue, but with the incredibly small size of meals makes it truly not worth it. Food was just OK nothing special. The food is good but they have started charging a 3% Bogus fee to the check. They are calling it an administrative fee and that's if you are paying cash. I'm not sure how much extra you are charged for using a credit card. I have eaten there many times in the past and 3% is not going to cause me a financial issue. It's the principle of the bogus charge that bothers me. Every company has administrative cost but they don't have a fee like this. The profit they loose from me not eating their is much greater than the 3% they got from me tonight. read more

Excellent takeout dinner last night. We were surprised, given the somewhat mixed reviews. But we took a gamble, because we really wanted some NC BBQ. My husband was the winner. He got the pulled pork BBQ dinner (a little confusing w/ online ordering , since there was no indication of what kind of meat you were getting!). The *hickory* BBQ was really good. I also requested a side of the *Whole Lotta* BBQ sauce- which was good, too. The pork was incredibly tender. His 2 sides: collard greens and corn fritters were really good, too - especially the fritters. The juicy sweet corn inside was really flavorful. I got the smoked chicken platter. It was chopped - which was a little strange - but it was tasty. Loved my 2 sides: baked beans and potato salad. Husband picked up the meal and said he didn't really look at the place. We also ordered 5 wings to go with dinner, they were a bit on the small side. I found the chopped beef to be a bit dry on the salad and the chicken was also dry on the combo. Tony and I knew when we made our last minute plans for a road trip to NC that wherever we call it a night, our dinner would be Southern BBQ..and not just at any joint selling BBQ, it had to be on specializing in it...so when we decided to sleep in Mt Airy, NC., Little Richard's was the winner. The hostess greeted us immediately at a booth near the back from the door, I like that!! I am always cold!! She took our drink order of Sweet Southern Iced Tea with lemon and Tony had Budweiser Beer. After looking over the menu, I asked the waitress a few questions and she also offered me a taste of the BBQ Cole Slaw, like regular Slaw but no mayo its mixed with BBQ sauce..I wasn't a fan but I wanted to try it and was thankful she gave me the opportunity. We went with a Combo three meat platter with 2 sides: we chose double of the Ribs on the bone and some Beef Brisket. Our sides were Mac N'Cheese and Baked Beans and we chose a third side of Collard Greens and it was served with Hush Puppies. The food was terrific not one little complaint other than I was so full I could not finish my plate and I had no room to try their Banana Pudding..I highly recommend the restaurant and was pleased with the pricing. This is a small regional chain that puts out classic Carolina 'cue, and does so at a very attractive price point. For $16.06 plus tip, I received a tray piled high with chopped pork, onion rings, okra and hush puppies, as well as a refillable soft drink (Pepsi products). The deeply smoked pork offers great flavor without sauce, but it only got better with the addition of the classic Lexington style sauce. Yum. The onion rings are outstanding, and the okra and hush puppies don't lag far behind. This is seriously good eating, with portions large enough that I had enough leftovers to make dinner. We ate here while traveling in the area. We were a little turned off at first because the young lady who seated us seemed to be having a bad day--or maybe she just would rather not be here. Our server, however, was attentive--not overly friendly--but attentive. The food was really good. There are 5 of us, so we just about sampled everything on the menu. I had ribs, my hubs had pulled pork. My granddaughter had the BBQ nachos which was enormous! Highly recommend the ribs, collards, and especially the homemade potato chips. All super good! The ribs was great , so was the burger. we open our bag, we have no napkins no utensils to eat with, our tea was hot and homemade chips were cold limp and greasy. They must have left over from lunch. I had the 3 bone Smoked Baby Back Ribs (there was nothing "baby" about them!) with Fried Okra and Collard Greens and all of it was delicious and more than I could eat!
