Super cheap PBRs (used to be a dollar for a 12oz, now $1.50 which is still a steal despite inflation) and delectable sammies you can tweak to your palatable pleasure! Seriously, the sandwich selection is where it's at...tho other menu items look incredible, including the buffalo mac n cheese Awesome spot too! Old US Post Office bldg w/what amounts to a museum of old and collectible tchotchkes that you can peruse while you wait for your food. Great ambiance, especially at the bar! Only thing is the inconsistency w/service here; thankfully I've only had one time where it was snail-level slow. In the end, all's well that ends well. The food at the Galax, VA location was really very good. The service, however, is another story. Arrived at about 7:40. Waited a few minutes. The waitress came out and got our drink orders and delivered them fairly promptly. She said just to let you know it will be about 25 minutes before you get your food. There were 4 people in our area. Over an hour passed before the food came out... Missing the French fries. We had to go and locate the waitress twice to tell her we had not gotten the fries They still didn't come out. In about 30 minutes they finally arrived after asking twice. They were fresh and hot so obviously they had not been cooked 30 minutes earlier. Offered dessert because we had to wait so long. We took it but around 25 more minutes before it was delivered. Not great at all. Brownie obviously old and dried out. Waitress told us there were 3 cooks in the kitchen. Not sure what they were doing. We watched the second half of the Arizona v somebody game and the first half of the Duke v Virginia game. You just can't make this stuff up. Went there New Year's Day for lunch and it was delicious. We sat at the bar and the bartender was very attentive. We waited for nothing. The food was great! Exactly as we ordered and hot and delicious! We have always loved Macados but do not have one near where we live now. It was an hour drive and very worth it!! This is definitely the cleanest Macado's I've been to in Southwest VA. As with most small towns in this area they seem to have a staffing issue therefore our service was average and food took a very long time at 3pm in the afternoon to come out. We had the boneless Parmesan Garlic wings and they were good, my husbands bacon cheeseburger and fries were well seasoned and cooked, my Cobb salad came out after the other food and did not have avocado and was missing bacon and lack luster on boiled eggs. Horrible service . Took an hour to get our food. The server Brianna W did not check on us one time until we went up to the front and asked how much longer it was going to take. She was super rude and never apologized about how long it was taking. The restaurant was not busy at all. I've heard about this restaurant for years! Not this particular location, but the one in Radford. As a young adult, my wife used to party at Macados. I had accidently broken her last "Macado's Halloween" commemorative glass and jumped at the chance to replace it from their Galax location. Above all, our server was great. The server was amazing! She is not to be blamed for a bartender who couldn't pour two beers in under 20 min. on a Thursday evening. Nor is she to blame for a kitchen that took well over an hour and fifteen minutes to make two cold sandwiches: a sloppily thrown together chicken-salad (the appearance of which was apologized for by our server) and my sandwich with the wrong meat. After speaking to the manager (who, by all appearances and "food prep. gloves" had been working in the aforementioned kitchen), an apology was offered, a sandwich was remade, and all the food was made complimentary; including the replacement pint glass(es) for my wife. So, if you're looking for a beer, visually questionable, and twice made sandwiches, that will take over two hours to get to your table... This is the spot! Again, I can't say enough about how wonderful, charming, and apologetic the server was. I hope that this summer job helps her finish her degree and allows her to disassociate herself from this Macado's location. First time in the Galax one..used to visit the old Beckley location weekly before it closed. The place looked like a old bank outside and only side of the street parking. Went inside and only one waitress on the floor to serve everyone. She told it would be a wait...she was definitely busting her butt taking care of everyone and hustling! Don't waste your time!! This establishment has been on a steady decline, and your first hint walking in is the sign stating they're looking to hire a manager. Arrived before 5pm dinner rush on a Saturday night and didn't receive our food until an hour and a half later. All we ordered was 3 burgers and 1 sandwich with a side dish of mac and cheese. Waitress came around twice in the hour to ask if we needed anything which at the time all we wanted was our food! Drinks ran empty and we never saw her again. When the food finally came out, you could tell the fries had been reheated after sitting out with no ketchup in sight. One burger came out with none of the toppings which were supposed to be on it. Mac and cheese was a no show. Multiple tables had been waiting over an hour as well and almost everyone around requested the manager to come over. Server had no initiative to make sure her tables were taken care of. This franchise restaurant used to be consistently good even with slow service, however our favorites that we ordered yesterday were so off the menu descriptions we hardly recognized them. The Spinach Artichoke Dip was tasteless without the usual good amount of artichoke bits and instead of it being covered in gooey cheese, there was a fish full of spinach and a few dollops of cheese. Awful! Next, our Southwestern Style Salad was mostly chips and nowhere near the menu description. The service was even slower than usual. Upon first entering the place about 3 staff simply ignored me and continued to "shoot the breeze" as if there were not a patron standing there. When I ordered my meal I knew it came with fries and I told the server right away while placing the order I wanted the fries "crispy" please. When my food came the fries looked pretty much uncooked. Still very white, not tan or browned. I asked the server to bring them back and to have the chef "burn them". The server clearly brought back the same exact fries and said they told him "bring these out". Their bathrooms are disgusting, food takes too long, manager refuses to turn AC tea reasonable temperature and they put drunk bar patrons above family service. Completely unacceptable on all levels. GM needs sensitivity training and a lesson in general manners. The only thing I can recommend is to replace her to improve your reviews. Anyone with children? Go elsewhere. I visit Galax about once a year and always make a trip or two to Macado's. It consistently has good food and a giant glass of beer ready for me. My dad lives in Galax and I make the trip from Nashville to visit him during Christmas each year. I always try something new when making my annual visit to Macado's. There are a lot of options on the menu and everything is solid. I especially like that you can get a beer in a fishbowl-sized glass. The service seems to always be a bit slow and I was told to never go upstairs because they will forget you're there. However, if you're in no hurry and just want to sit back and have a beer and a casual meal, this is a great choice. read more

I love a good Macado's! But this ain't it. My coworker and I walked in on an average Tuesday evening, and were seated immediately. No greeting from the hostess, just "How many?" Turns out said hostess was also our server, so we ordered drinks and perused the vast menu, which I was familiar with since the hubs and I frequent the Bristol location. We ordered, and our food came quickly! So far so good, right? Then I bit into my sandwich, a Honeymooner. I've had a good Honeymooner, I know it should be toasted. This was not. My fries, thankfully, were hot, since I had to pay a $2.00 up-charge for a side worth eating. But that sandwich was ice cold. Did I get a chance to report it to management? Heck no, the server didn't come back except to drop off checks, and at that point, I just wanted to head back to the hotel. I know this chain, and I know they're capable of much more than I experienced tonight. Cold food and an absent server are nothing a little old-fashioned customer service training couldn't fix, but I won't hold my breath. It is what it is. Food isn't bad but nothing to write home about either. The wait staff does their best but it's obvious they need more proper training. I used to come here all the time because it was one of the only options Galax offers to get a good drink but since I've moved away I've found much better restaurant/bar experiences. The restuarant was accommodating when we arrived with several people unannounced. I was first taken back by the lack of cleanliness of the walls, shutters and decor items. It appears that nothing has been dusted in some time. I ordered cole slaw as a side and received browning semi-cold slaw, likely from yesterday. The waitress quickly retrieved me some chips to replace the side. However, starring at browning slaw and dusty shutters takes away from enjoying a meal. Then right before leaving I leaned over to grab my keys and my sweater was snagged on a nail. After some assistance breaking free to keep from ripping the sweater, I noticed that several small nails were sticking out of the wall. I ordered 2 meals to be picked up and I don't know what has happened to macados because I have always loved eating there but the night shift working in the kitchen on 12/05/2022 is terrible. I really don't think they care what kind of food they're sending out. I didn't bother to check my order after picking it up because I've never had a wrong order there. when I got home I didn't have any pickles at all not even the extra ones I ordered and paid for. There macaroni salad which I always get was awful. It had no flavor at all very bitter. The coleslaw tasted like Sauerkraut it was very unusual and non editable in my opinion. *****************OPEN LATE********************* On a recent trip to Galax, VA. the Mr., son and I arrived around 9pm. We flew in from Los Angeles and drove in from Charlotte so it was a full days travel before we made it into town. By the time we got in we were starving!!! When we checked in to our hotel (check out my Knights Inn review) we learned that just about everything shuts down at 9pm. And this being our first time there we were in awe at how "dead" (in a good way) the town was. So, being that Macados was one of the only restaurant/bars open till 1am we decided to go check it out. The restaurant itself is located in the center of town and when we passed by, on our way to our motel, we would have never known it was still open. Inside you find a lot of vintage toys and memorabilia, very nostalgic and of course down memory lane we went, which was really nice. The service was a bit slow being that the place was not packed at all, at least not for LA standards. Any how, we all ordered sandwiches. I wish I could give this place a better rating, but the food was just OK, really nothing to brag about. It certainly did the job at satiating our hunger and we were certainly grateful, but nonetheless it was just OK. And as previously mentioned the service was ok. It took a while for our server to get to us, then it took another while for our food to be ready and finally it took still yet another while to get out check. So, after getting there about 9:45pm we didn't get out till about midnight considering the fact that we did not take very long eating our food. I don't know I suppose we will go back at a different time and see how things turn out then. read more
