I waited an additional 20min and had to ask 3 different people to check on it. Got the order home and the burgers were way over done, like hockey pucks and the fries were really gross, soggy and cold. Charged $23.14. Could have gone to Wendy's and hot better. I ordered the banana split sundae, my son ordered the Cookies n' Cream Crazy shake and my husband ordered a candy bar ice cream with waffle cone. We were all really pleased with the creativity of the shakes, the flavor of our treats, the atmosphere and the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. This little cafe in Powhatan has garnered much hype over their over the top dessert milkshakes. I can say the hype is well deserved. Our little party of four went here after floating on the river for the afternoon. The wait wasn't long especially since we sat outside. We all ordered entrees. The corned beef Rueben and onion rings were good but I've had better. The true stars came out afterwards. We had the CookieLicious, Total Blackout, and Chocolate Peanut Butter insanity milk shakes to share. Wow! They were delicious. Definitely big enough to share between two people. Poor representation of Powhatan's community for anyone visiting. There is a huge lack of motivation with every employee we encountered from the host stand to the waitress. Being located right next to a Food Lion, and having a very small amount of people in the restaurant, you would assume they could replace the lemons that they were out of, or at the minimum keep your drinks refilled and have silverware & napkins ready. Unfortunately not. Had a similar experience last year and this was my first time back since then, still disappointed to see food quality and service has not improved. read more

Me, my mother, and my two daughters went there on a Saturday afternoon. We waited 30 mins to be seated and another 20 mins to place our order. Once we got our lunch my mother attempted to put salt on her burger and the whole salt shaker came undone, at no fault of my mothers, and salt covered her burger. The manager did not attempt to right that wrong and still charged us 13 dollars for our meal. The waitress continued to ask my mother how this happened and seemed like she was blaming that situation on my mother. We did not appreciate being grilled like we had committed a crime. We were at this establishment for almost two hours and were not impressed with the crazy shakes nor their customer service! $70 dollars later, and unhappy that we were unable to eat our food due to the salt situation, we will never be returning. We have been to Mables twice; once at the old location and once at the new location. For starters, the new location has none of the charm that the old location did. No cute outdoor seating, no cozy coffee bar feel. It is now in a tacky strip mall. It has all the charm of a gynecologist's office. Whoever made the decision to relocate made a very poor choice. The first time we went, in the old location, the service was terrible and it took 2 1/2 hours for our food and shakes. It was a nightmare. I promised myself that I would never, ever go back. Nevertheless, I thought maybe in their new location, service would be improved. So, back we went a year later. Huge mistake. Knowing the problems with slow service in the past, we intentionally ordered our food, shakes, and asked for the check in the very beginning when we placed our order. Still, it took over two hours to get burgers and milkshakes. The food was better than last time, I will give them that. The waitress was friendly. The best part of our meal was the lollipop. Where to begin... After we were seated, we placed an order for cheese fries with everything on them. A few minutes later, a different server came by to take our order, and we explained that we'd already ordered. About 45 minutes later, the second server came by to ask if the original server had informed us that the 2 extra toppings we'd ordered (the fries automatically come with 4) would cost us an additional $1.50. We said this was fine, and she left us again. Eventually she returned with an unusual order of loaded cheese fries. By unusual, I mean that they were covered in raw red onions and cold cherry tomatoes, sliced in half. We thought it was a strange way to serve the dish, but no big deal. We were starving. We dug in. Sadly, the fries were mostly raw and cold. When the server returned, we explained the problem. She was very apologetic, and took them away. We said that we would skip the actual food entirely, and simply get 2 milkshakes. We waited about a half hour to receive those milkshakes. She did stop by at one point to inform us that they would not be charging us for the fries (obviously - we wouldn't have paid for them if they'd tried) and offered us a $10 gift card but informed us that we could not use it tonight - forcing us to endure this nightmare again? We gifted it to other patrons. When the milkshakes finally arrived, they were...fine. They were stunning to look at. The toppings (cotton candy, whipped cream, candy, etc.) were great. I especially enjoyed the lollipop. The actual milkshakes tasted like...milkshakes. No more, no less. They cost us $28. We basically spent $28 and 2 hours on a really good lollipop and cool whip. If you live in the area and have a lot of time on your hands...still drive to Midlothian and go to Sonic. read more

Awesome food and great service. Really impressed with their adaptation to COVID. Outside seating is available. Host/hostess seats you and disinfects you're table before you sit. Had the chance to check out Mabel's tonight and it did not disappoint! I ordered the Roosevelt which was a hamburger patty between not one but two grilled cheese sandwiches, needless to say, it was more than enough for dinner. I boxed half of my dinner so I had room for dessert. I split the chocolate chip cookie speciality milkshake, the ice cream cookie sandwiches were my favorite part! We came for the shakes and they did not disappoint! They were crazy, huge and delicious. I took away a star because you had to eat them inside. It was a nice day and we would have liked to sit outside. There was also a really long wait. Like 45 minutes. However there is a nice big field to the side of the restaurant with a bunch of outdoor toys and my kids were happy. I'm glad we ate before we got there because my kids would have been starving having to wait so long. The service was good, a little slow, but I can imagine it takes a long time to create these shakes. I'm curious to try the food. I'll probably call ahead next time to see what the wait is. After seeing the pictures of these crazy milkshakes I had to try one. So disappointed..... We ordered 4 milkshakes, a coke float, and a scoop of ice cream. The milkshakes took 20-30 minutes to get and were 90% whip cream that fell off within 10 seconds of hitting the table. The server forgot the coke float and the scoop of ice cream. (The scoop of ice cream was for our 3 year old) these came as everyone was finishing their shakes. For $70, it was not worth it. Save your money and get a regular milkshake. read more

I went to Mabel's for the first time today. I ordered the Handyman burger. It came out well done and consequently dry. The burgers aren't made to order. I prefer my burgers medium rare. It was not worth the price. The waitress was cute as a button and very attentive. It did take quite a while to get our food after we ordered. Not sure if I'll be returning. read more

Poor customer service, staff seems unhappy to be working there and the food is a D. We also witnessed very unsanitary conditions in the ice cream sundae prep area. Additionally, when our server came to fill waters she stopped refilling cups when the water in my glass met the water in the pitcher, she then moved to the next cup and next table. Drove an hour to Mabels to get the peanut butter insanity crafted milkshake and didn't even get it! When ordering I even asked my waitress "the one with the pie" and said the name and was brought the regular peanut butter sundae. With having not ever been there before I didn't think anything of the appearance. I kept eating thinking the pie was somewhere inside. I got half way through and to my surprise a waitress brings out two of the peanut butter insanity's to another table and I had them realized that I was given the wrong thing. I told my waitress and all she said was she was sorry and that I could get the pie but would have to pay for it....WHAT! I am so unbelievably disappointed. I literally almost cried at my table but had my children with me so I didn't. I should've been comped or given what I actually ordered at no EXTRA charge. So dissatisfied and so disappointed. We've been coming to Mabels since they were the little ice cream shop down the street. Can't remember the name. It's always been a charming little place to grab a sandwich or speciality coffee and sit back and chill. (Check out my earlier review) Since the inception of the Crazy Milkshakes it's turned into a mad house. I'm happy for their success but sad at the same time. Mabels as we knew it no longer exists. Gone are the days of stopping in for a nice meal or even a coffee. It's almost always packed to overflowing. The wait time just to be seated can be 30 minutes to an hour. Once your seated,it can take another 20 minutes just to be acknowledged by a server. As if that's not bad enough...how about a 30 minute to 1 hour wait for food? The final straw for us was this past weekend. We had out of town guests who wanted to try the "cute little place in the village" for a milkshake. Not a Crazy Milkshake,just a regular milkshake. We explained to them that since it was a Friday night we would more than likely have a long wait. They still wanted to go. When we arrived it was packed to the gills. No problem. Here's where the problems start. There was no one to direct the customers coming in the door. No hostess. People were coming in and had no idea where to go or what to do. We went to the counter to order our milkshakes. There was a young girl behind the counter making the Crazy Shakes and she was beyond overwhelmed. Another young lady took our order than walked away for about 5 minutes,took our order again,started to make our (regular)shakes,walked away again for another 5 minutes, came back and finished making 2 shakes. We realized that she was also a server and was waiting on tables in addition to working the front counter. Poor thing!! We felt bad for her. As we stood at the counter during this time we observed 3 beautiful cakes sitting totally uncovered on a dirty countertop.There were So many people in there that I'm sure the cakes were "breathed" on quite a bit. Who knows, maybe even sneezed on. In addition, behind the counter was filthy. The trash can was overflowing,the area where the crazy shakes were being prepared looked like an explosion had taken place. My friend remarked that if this is what the front of the restaurant looks like,she can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. Now, this is what really made my stomach turn. The young girl who was making the shakes had long hair and it was partially pulled back but lots of it hanging down. She grabbed a pole (sort of like a shortened broom stick ) off the milkshake prep area(where the candy and fixing for the milkshakes are) and used it to knock a box off of the top shelf into her hands. No problem...until I saw a bunch of long hairs stuck to the end of the broomstick thing. She than laid the broomstick down on top of the milkshake fixins... GAG!!! No doubt that somebody that night got a hairy milkshake. Fortunately,our milkshakes were made at the other end of the counter...or we would have surely walked out. 2 of us got our milkshakes but the other 2 had to wait another 15 minutes. There did not appear to be a Mgr. in sight. It was totally chaotic. It saddens me to see this lovely little eatery turn into such a disorganized and unclean establishment. It's heartbreaking. It appears they need to re evaluate what they want to be. A restaurant or an ice cream shop. I know they are making money hand over fist with these milkshakes,and good for them..but PLEASE hire more staff,including servers,mgrs, cleaners and a hostess. I'm hoping Mabels stays around for a long time but I know if things continue as they are....well,I will say no more. read more

A definite "NO" for Mabel's Cafe. Two weeks ago my seven year old grandson asked to celebrate his birthday with a Crazy Shake in Mabel's Cafe. My other three grandchildren wanted to join him in enjoying Crazy Shakes as well. We waited in vain for forty minutes for our shakes. No Shakes arrived. Assistant Manager Brittany promised that if we returned the following day at 2 PM, she would make them herself. We returned and forty-five minutes later we left again without shakes and no sighting of Brittany. Requesting some resolution, messages to both Brittany and then to Jennifer Roberts, the owner of Mabel's Cafe have gone unanswered. This business is sorely lacking in customer service. read more

Went there this past Saturday with my wife. Food was good enough. Burger was overcooked but I was extremely hungry so I ate it. Not the worst but not the best. We ordered a milk shake and split it. A bit underwhelming. Mostly whipped cream and some other toppings. We got the cookies and cream. 6 hours later I'm having the worst stomach cramps and the following 24 hours was pure hell because I got food poisoning. I've read others reviews and apparently the food safety is inconsistent at best. Probably got cross food contamination due to people not changing their gloves. Will not be returning. I just wish I could get my money back. Still feeling the effects of this food poisoning, and it's bad. read more
