MABELS - Dining room - Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt Near Me - Powhatan, Virginia

For a small local place the menu is diverse. We usually stop for burgers and buffalo chicken salad. Quaint and cozy. Love that they have a decent Pinot Grigio. If you get there early enough they even bring you a mini cupcake with the check. I'm a bit of a cupcake snob but they are very good. The competition in the village needs to take a lesson and revamp their menu or Mabel's will become "the" place, read more

Amazing we go every other weekend. The burgers are the best and the shakes to die for I recommend the Tiramisu.

Love this spot for burgers and take out in Powhatan! One of my favorites for coffee in the county...they have "Central Perk" style mugs. If you watch "Friends" you know that means the coffee lasts your whole coffee hangout sesh! ;) Waitress service can be hit or miss sometimes, but no one has ever been rude! Just sometimes you have to search for help if you need something mid-meal. It feels more like inexperience than not caring. There's one woman with glasses and blond hair that is always great! I recommend this cute spot to everyone! read more

I'm a local Powhatan resident that frequented MABELS after school to get ice cream with my kids (nothing fancy, just a scoop of ice cream). I stopped when the crazy shakes began because of too many customers and slow service. I gave it another try yesterday at the new location hoping things would be different! I was excited. The new location is cute, but of course not the same vibe as the old house it was in. The music was SUPER loud! I didn't complain, but the table next to me did. They were told the music only had one volume and could not be turned down. I like loud music, but this was way too much for a restaurant environment. I ordered the 1934 burger and potato salad. The burger was dry and crispy and the potato salad was fine. Everything was also pricier than I remember. $11 for a panini and the same for a burger. The burger was not worth the price. My water came out with a container of water and a tiny glass. I had to refill my water continuously. I thought that was a strange concept. On a positive note, my waitress was super nice and my food came out much faster than in the past. I hate giving bad reviews, but am doing this to help the business. I hope you listen to these reviews! read more

Beautiful day, not too humid, so we decided to trek the 40 minute drive out to this ice cream institution that we have been hearing about. Showed our kids photos of the Crazy Milkshakes on Yelp and their eyes bugged out of their heads! Arrived at 4:00 PM, and were told the weight was 35 minutes. It ended up being an hour which was a bummer and kids were bored and whining. Would have been great if they had something to keep kids entertained while waiting (oversized connect four, cornhole, this would have made the wait so much more bearable for our two boys). Wasn't expecting that, but we were already there so determined to stick with it. Adirondack chairs in the shade made the wait comfortable at least. Surprisingly it took another 40 minutes before our two milkshakes to come out. My husband got a basic chocolate shaken which came out in 15 min. But as for the 2 Crazy Milkshakes, it's hard to believe those really took 30 min to make. I have been o think our order must have fallen through the cracks because other people's orders were coming out a lot sooner. That being said, despite the uncomfortably long wait, it was still worth it as the kids were totally in heaven with their choices. Of course they hardly made a dent as these are in ENORMOUS, truly bigger than their heads, as you can see from my photos. I tried both of them and they are, for me, just OK. But I admit I am an ice cream snob. Prefer quality over quantity, ie locally made artisanal ice cream or gelato versus the standard commercial brands. However this jaunt was totally for the kids and they couldn't care less if it was a house made ice cream or not. FYI, Mabel's serve Hersheys ice cream which is more on the airy side and so not really for me. And the whipped cream is definitely from a can. But the kids gobbled it up with squeals I'd delight, and experience is worth doing for the novelty alone. Our boys couldn't have been happier (or fuller)! We would definitely go back again but plan ahead with stuff to keep them busy while waiting. I'd also suggest sitting inside as the flies couldn't resist the temptation and were bothersome. I would also suggest asking for a status update after 15 min if your order hasn't come out in case your ticket has gotten lost. Better to know that sooner than later. We waited 40 min before finally asking where it was and then 10 min later our shakes arrived. Had they gotten the timing and service issues right on our first visit, I would have given them 4 stars. read more

The service is good, burgers are good and the milkshakes are literally to die for. Love the small town atmosphere.

Love their burgers. They even have a burger served between two complete grilled cheese sandwiches. the homemade potato chips are awesome. And don't even get me started on the sundaes and shakes! read more

I was so excited to try their Crazy Shakes, particularly because they had one that included a gluten free piece of cake. We ordered the first shake, no problem. I went to order the Gluten free shake and was rudely told that they didn't have it. There was some confusion with the workers as to if they did or not. One girl kept saying they didn't have raspberries? What?? Ok... no problem ! So I asked if they had the gluten free cake needed because that was the important part, I don't need the raspberries! Not only did she refuse to sell me the shake without the raspberries but she was incredibly rude about it. I completely understand a No Substitute policy but if you're out of one item that isn't even the main ingredient to refuse to sell the only GF shake available seems ridiculous. The attitude that came with the refusal was absolutely unacceptable. read more

Mabel's have always enjoyed your shakes. Today shake was good but service was awful. 12/19/20 we visited. Ordered a Sunday. Waited 20 minutes, asked waitress what was taking so long, after talking we the others at the counter came over to tell us they were out of some of the Sunday ingredients, no one bothered to let us know. We were forgotten. 6 customer was all that was in there at that time. So ordered a shake, that shake took another 20 minutes to get. 40 minutes for one shake. The people who came in after us received there's while we still sat. There were only 2 other's tables with customers in there at the time...more employees than customers. 3 tables sat uncleaned from previous customers the whole time we were there while your employees huddled in groups to chit chat. Obviously no one of authority there. A lot of training in customer service still needs to be done read more

My Mom & I were having a girls day & decided to finally go to Mabels, after hearing some hype. We knew the shakes were expensive, but were surprised at just how expensive some were. We both ordered the Insanity, due to my obsession w/ peanut butter. The shake didn't have much flavor & the chocolate cake on top had a horrible metallic taste to it. The ambiance was not enjoyable either. It felt as if you were almost in a school cafeteria. There were two waitresses helping that day. One of them was very sweet, however the other was not. We will not be going back! read more

I searched for a place that had the "crazy" milkshakes and found Mabel's. I called to check how they were operating under covid guidelines and it sounded good. The place was about an hour's drive for me and my grand-daughter, and when we got there, only 2 other tables were occupied. A worker seated us after a few minutes wait and then we sat...and sat...and sat. Finally, I got the attention of a waitress and asked for menus, whereupon I was told tehre were noe and that I would need to scan the QR code on the table. After about 15 minutes, a waitress came and we ordered: one crazy shake, a burger, and a sandwhich. I specifically asked that she bring the shake as soon as possible. About 17 minutes later, someone else brought our food. I asked that person could we get the shake and was told it was being made. My grand-daughter finished her entire meal and still no shake. When it finally arrived, I asked if we could have napkins and catsup (ours was completely empty and no one ever came by to see if everythig was ok). A child at one of the other tables dropped a glass and as it shatered, teh drink in it splattered and spew everywhere, including our table and all over me. I called across the restaurant and asked the waitress to please bring me some napkins and when she did, she saw the drink all over the floor, table, and I told her it went all over my shirt. She dropped 3 napkins on our table and nver said a word. Nver returned to clean the drink form the floor by is, or off our table, or to even ask if I needed a wet cloth. Our atual waitress never checked even once to see if we needed anything (like refills on drinks) and I finally flagged her down to ask her to bring dessert. She brought the check with the dessert and only rteurned to get payment. Needless to say, it was totally not worth the drive and I would not go backp. I would not recommend the place to anyone. The food was okay, but the horrible service and attitude of the worker made me wish I had selected somewhere else. read more

Food is great but service is very slow...be prepared to wait...worth the wait but definitely be prepared to chill.

I don't think I have ever left such a horrible review and I hate to leave it. We were there on Saturday with a party of 9. We live an hour away and our friends that joined us, live almost 2 hours away. We came for the crazy shakes as we were celebrating 3 birthdays (2 that actual day-my husband & daughter & a pregnant friend whose was earlier in the week). We waited 45ish minutes to be seated as I was told over the phone they do not do reservations. No big deal, that was expected. Once seated, I thought I was hot flashing, but nope, we were all quite hot. It had been cooler outside in the shade than inside and it was 90 outside, I believe. It was making my husband feel a little off, so he had to keep getting up and walking out to cool off. They were a little slow to get our orders, but our waitresses were sweet. My youngest 2 (1 of which was the birthday girl) ordered milkshakes as their meal along with mozz sticks. We ordered burgers and the pineapple burger (Aloha??) was out and that was what my pregnant friend wanted. She selected a different burger. We ordered their fries with cheese and other toppings as an appetizer. It seemed to take forever to get our app and the milkshakes with mozz. The shakes are everything you expect and definitely too much to eat for one person, and I would give the 2 we were able to order 5 stars. However, by the time we had rec'd our app we were just under 3 & 4 hours in (counting drive time, wait time, & time for order to arrive). With 9 of us more than ready to eat when the app arrived most of us grabbed a few fries, realizing that it looked like it had been sitting quite awhile and well overcooked (over microwaved?)...as the cheese was tough and it was all stuck together to the paper. You could pick the paper up with everything stuck to it (aside from the jalapenos which were added after). The waitress brought our meals and asked how everything was. I reluctantly let her know that we were not able to eat the appetizer as it was all stuck to the paper. She admitted that it looked overdone. She let a manager/waitress/someone from the front know, I assumed. She got to our table and greeted us. No introduction as to who she was or what she was at our table for. I asked if she was there about the complaint and she indicated that she was. I told her that we would like the appetizer taken off since we were unable to eat it. She said that she couldn't do that because we had obviously eaten some of it and that she could discount it and make another. We said that we didn't want another and to take it off. She said that she couldn't do that. We told her to pack it in a to go for us & turned out it was ONLY a 15% discount (that was about all we ate). (Of course, it looked like we ate it, there were quite a few of us that tried the fries along with the paper that we didn't realize was stuck to it as we ate it.) Our burgers were just okay, though my pregnant friend said that she liked hers, but she had to be starving by the time she got it. Not much flavor aside from toppings. We finished our meal and were still waiting on our appetizer to be remade. My pregnant friend and fam were ready to order 2 milkshakes and my oldest was ready to order his to only be told that they did not have their shakes available and only had a select few available (none of which they wanted). This was all by 7:30. Still didn't have our remake appetizer. We decided it was too hot and we were not waiting longer and we hoped to find a treat somewhere else. We all got up to leave and I stated to the waitress that they needed to take the appetizer off of our bill at this point, because we were leaving, which they finally did. We had come to Mabel's at my daughter's request to celebrate her 15th. I have had a few friends that had previously come and shared pics of their shakes and that is what she wanted for her birthday. We were so frustrated and hot when we left that she forgot to grab the balloons and toppers for her shake. We won't be back. If you are local and go early enough on a non-weekend day just for shakes, you might have a better experience than we did. We will be heading to NN Burgers for a guaranteed good burger and crazy shakes next time. read more

We had an late afternoon dinner and shakes and my review is very mixed. First the positive - server was very friendly and the shakes very amazing. Now for the food. We (4) all had some kind of burger or at least what was on the menu as a burger. The restaurant was empty and we waited a longtime for our food. The buns were all toasted and super dry. Maybe they were stale and that is why they were toasted? Nothing on the menu about toasting the buns. The burgers were so over cooked and as dry as the bun. We asked for medium and were told they only do medium well due to rules in Powhatan. Rules or no rules the burgers were beyond well done. We will go back for the ice cream but if the food is always that bad I don't see this place lasting long in their new location. Save your money and don't order the burgers. read more

We finally made it out to MABELS and honestly I'm really disappointed. To call their burgers craft is an exaggeration. The patty was dry and crunchy. The toppings are the variety. The toppings are what add flavor. But not the burger. The fries aren't fresh. It's frozen pre packaged fries. Most other burger places around Richmond cut their own. The sandwich was described as good. I'd encourage anyone to get a sandwich over a burger. We had multiple problems with our orders. One, we were there for 2.5 hours. We only ordered an appetizer, entrees, and a shake. It honestly took about 45 minutes to get food. We noted the waitress didn't write down our order. That turned out to be a problem. The wrong sides were brought out. Not the biggest deal but still for three people and an $80 bill you'd expect more attention to detail. We ordered two shakes. They never arrived. Asked for the check, and they were never entered. We then re-ordered one shake instead of the two. The whole point of going was letting a child get a shake so we had to wait another ~15 minutes to get it. The shake was good. No complaints. Large. The photos do them justice. No compensation for the error/delay/inconvenience not that we wanted one - although it is typically industry standard. It was just an all around negative experience and there are plenty of other places around RVA that don't have these issues. It's not worth the hassle of visiting, but was worth a shot. read more

I really really want to like this place. I really do. We have literally given it dozens of tries because we live in the area and I love supporting local non-chain places. But I can never believe how slow the service is. From walking in the door to the time you get your food the service is unbelievably slow and painful. If it was just this issue alone I might be able to move forward and continue to go but the prices are outrageous. After a $24 lunch for two people (One adult plus one child) I decided to buy my child a kid's scoop of ice cream. When the server handed my child a tiny scoop of ice cream on a cake cone and said "$4.06 please" I almost passed out. I actually asked for the manager because that seemed completely unreasonable. Considering a half gallon of ice cream is about that price I just couldn't bring myself to pay that. Again I really want to support local restaurants but I just can't endorse this. Unfortunately Mabels can't decide on what sort of establishment it is... Espresso house? Absolutely not... It may be the worst coffee I've ever purchased. Ice cream shop? Possibly, but this might be the most expensive store brand of ice cream I've ever purchased. Lunch spot? Maybe but incredibly slow. Bakery? Nope. Please don't let the crazy shakes lure you in either....we've now had crazy shakes (for upwards of $12 each) a few times and every time I regret it immediately. It takes forever to get and twice we sent them back because the ice cream tasted like dish soap. Sorry Mabels. You need some competition. read more

The food was absolutely amazing. The service on the other hand was not great at all. I was there for 2 1/2 hours and our waitress came to our table twice. Once to take our order and once to bring us our drinks. Someone else had to bring us our food. Yet all the other tables that our waitress was serving received more attention. I then spoke with management, to inform them of our situation and she apologize and said she would take care of it. Yet nothing was done. I really enjoyed the food there. It was amazing. However it may be a while before I go back do to the lack of service. I personally think if you feel that your restaurant is understaffed (as the manager told me) then the whole team needs to work together. But that's just me. read more

Nobody is in a hurry to do anything at this place. It took about 45 minutes to be seated after we were quoted 20 minutes. We had to go back to the hostess station and inquire about our table before we were seated. Once we ordered our food, it took another 20 minutes to get our food. The homemade chips were soggy. Even after they brought me a "fresh batch" they still tasted stale. The chicken Florentine panini was mediocre. The bread was way too hard. The burgers were good. The fries were good. The chicken tenders were good. We ordered 3 milkshakes and 2 banana splits. The milkshakes were just as tasty as they were beautiful. The banana splits arrived after everyone had finished there milkshakes and were a lot less dramatic. They were basic in decoration, but they tasted fine. Please don't go here unless you have plenty of time to spare. It's not an in and out kind of place. We were there 3 hours, painfully waiting. The servers were nice. The dining room floor needed sweeping. They were slow to buss tables around us, and the women's restroom was in such disarray that I made a quick u-turn at the door. This place could be so much better. read more

Will not be back. Walked in TWO hours before closing and all chairs were turned over on tables with dark lighting. As soon as I walked in I felt like I wasn't acknowledged and that the staff didn't want to be bothered with. I even asked if they were closing although all my friend and I wanted was ice cream. We asked to sit outside and were told we wouldn't have actual silverware or a bowl if we sat out there but would have plastic. They were all young girls just trying to leave early and get home. Very disappointed in the service. When we left to go home, the staff was taking down the open sign which was then an hour and a half early from closing. read more

Apparently they close at 8:30 pm now for Daylight Savings Time and their website and Facebook and Yelp info have not been updated. We drove 40 minutes for our first visit and to make this a part of our new Christmas tradition only to meet fellow potential patrons in the parking lot who had been turned away because they closed 30 minutes earlier than Mabel's website states as well. The manager and another employee came out to the parking lot to inform us of their new Daylight Savings Time hours and apologized that their website had not been updated. I guess they will only be open until 8:30 pm until March 12th, 2019. read more

Ok food you have to wait a really long time for it. Service is very respectful but it is very expensive

Second time coming here to eat, we drive an hour to get to the restrant, when arriving told the wait would be an hour. The restrant was not packed plenty of seating, most food we asked for was unavailable and not posted for customers to see. When being seated waited another 10 minutes for anyone to ask what we would like to drink. I feel that this place would thrive even more if they had more servers and if the current servers would stop talking and huddling so much and pay more attention to guest and stay on task. Over all what makes this place is the crazy shakes and that's about the only thing, over all the food is ok not the best they could do better....and maybe another hostess or way of checking in to dine the poor hostess girl is busting her but to seat people all by herself. read more

The food is always very good. We never leave anything on our plates. The only reason I do not rate this place 5 starts is because the service is not always the best. A meal that should take no more than an hour can take 2. read more

The food was delicious and the service was fantastic- once we were served. There appeared to be just one waiter who had to scoop ice cream and ring up another customer before he greeted/seated us, so it was somewhat annoying to stand there awkwardly for 10 minutes without invitation to go ahead and find a seat. I'm all about hiring young kids to gain experience in the restaurant industry, but you have to teach them proper customer service! The meal was expensive- to substitute a black bean patty for a hamburger was $3 extra!!! I just can't get over that. Since when do beans cost more than meat?! And I don't think it was a handmade patty. Not worth $13 for a veggie burger with a few fries. The ambiance is fantastic and this would be a great place to frequent as a usual hang out spot if not for the prices. read more

Not impressed with service. They must either be understaffed or are just inefficient in the seating, order taking and prep of ice cream processes. There was no line and no crowd at 7pm and it still took 15 minutes before anyone asked what we (2 of us) wanted to order. I watched one young lady (very friendly) make a giant sundae and a young man making shakes for the rear dining room. Maybe whoever was manning the counter was on break. There was no "hostess". The ice cream selection is very limited and there was no hot fudge for the sundaes. Milkshake and a ice cream with chocolate syrup was pricey-$13. If you're not going for one of their outrageous sundaes (complete with candy bar, whipped cream and sprinkles), I'd pass. read more

My husband and I have been twice. The first time we walked in the new location and waited at the front door to be seated. We gave it another try this past week. We walked in and there were only a few customers there and there were open tables. We were told it would be a 5 minute wait.
