After a long day of travel, we arrived in South Carolina and headed to Ma Daisy's Porch for dinner on Wednesday. The place captures old Southern charm with a modern artistic twist, featuring colorful paintings, minerals, and artwork. However, the music that evening didn't really match the Southern motif or aesthetics. Our waitress was courteous and helpful, answering our questions. Despite the restaurant being mostly empty, it took a while to get our order, partly because the waitress was alone, and the manager--who barely acknowledged us and was mostly on her phone--was present. When the food finally arrived, the portions were generous. I had fried fish, though I couldn't tell if it was catfish. It came with French fries, a hush puppy tasting like fried dough, coleslaw that seemed to have sat out too long and was small in portion, and fried okra with little seasoning, tasting more of flour than cornmeal breading. This was disappointing, though it might reflect "Low Country" cooking. Overall, the restaurant seemed to emphasize branding and decor over authentic history. The best South Carolina cuisine I found was near Saint Helena Island, close to some historic sites, where the food was noticeably better and the vibe felt genuine, especially in spots rich with landmarks. read more

We had planned an amazing weekend getaway, and while driving around we spotted a trailer advertising crabs. Of course, we made a quick U-turn thinking we had stumbled onto the perfect dinner spot. As soon as we pulled into the yard, the atmosphere immediately caught our attention. It felt like one big family gathering--a warm, loving community where everyone knew each other. The homes with their large wraparound porches gave me serious Tyler Perry movie vibes, like the kind of place where everyone gathers on the porch to laugh, eat, and soak up wisdom from the elders. We decided on Chef B's for dinner. Although reservations are required on Fridays and Saturdays, they were kind enough to seat us after about a 15-minute wait. As we looked around, there were still several empty tables, so we appreciated them accommodating us. We were greeted by a beautiful young chocolate hostess whose melanin was absolutely glowing. She was friendly, answered our questions about the menu, and made us feel welcome. We started with the fried okra, which was served with a béarnaise sauce. We also requested a side of ranch. Unfortunately, the appetizer was just okay. Neither the béarnaise nor the ranch complemented the okra, and both sauces missed the mark. For cocktails, we ordered the signature Rum Punch and the Juneteenth drink. Both were enjoyable, but I was confused by the Rum Punch. It was completely clear, even though the menu listed it as being made with dark rum. For our entrées, we ordered the Crab Fries, Shrimp & Grits, and Fried Oysters. The Crab Fries were described as blue crab, snow crab meat, garlic, Boursin cheese, and smoked cheddar. Unfortunately, the topping looked more like burnt cheese crumbs or scraps than a rich, cheesy crab topping. It wasn't visually appealing and didn't deliver the flavor we expected. The Shrimp & Grits were the biggest disappointment of the night. The shrimp themselves were fine, but the grits were incredibly thin and watery, with little to no seasoning. They lacked the rich, creamy texture and flavor that make shrimp and grits such a Southern favorite. The Fried Oysters also fell flat. They were under-seasoned, and the accompanying coleslaw was simply not enjoyable. Overall, the atmosphere was the highlight of our visit. The setting felt welcoming, authentic, and full of community, and the staff was pleasant. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the charm of the location. The whiting was crispy and the grits were creamy. I really enjoy my experience here. We arrived on time for a Friday evening reservation. We were seated promptly upstairs and received water from the bus person. Twenty minutes later we were still sitting at a table with just water. We called the bus person over to the table and informed them no one had taken our order for the evening. The bus person contacted our server who arrived at our table and apologized. The server took our order for appetizers, drinks, and main courses. Forty minutes after placing our orders, (one hour total time-wise) we were still sitting at the table with just water. I contacted the hostess. She said would attempt to retrieve our food from the kitchen promptly. Less than five minutes later all of our food, (drinks, appetizers and main courses) appeared at the same time at our table. It was quite a bit of food to receive at one time, and our small table was fully covered. The food was hot and seasoned nicely. I believe the long wait time for food affected our overall experience. It appears to be a nice concept. There is a research center, bakery, fire pit, and plenty of outdoor seating. Maybe it was an off night for service. I am unsure if I will return. read more

The food at Ma Daisy's was excellent as was the service. We ordered the fried shrimp plate with big fat shrimp with fries and homemade hush puppies and the very large jerk chicken salad. The house bourbon was poured generously. The server was sweet and also brought us waters which some restaurants have stopped doing. We opted for outdoor dining on the side patio because we wanted to enjoy the ambiance of the property. We will definitely be back!! read more

We arrived about 15 min before Ma's opened. We walked the immaculate grounds while we waited. The property has a nice farm house feeling with black painted buildings, grass area to rest, some games, & picnic tables. There is a museum on the grounds with art for sale. Inside the restaurant is immaculate and clean. A long bar, tables and a large round table and booth which fit the 6 of us comfortably. I had the chick and waffles, yummy. My friends loved the fried green tomatoes and my fiancé enjoyed his hamburger and friends. All of shared some wings too. In the area visiting HHI off season we fell into Ma's Porch for a late lunch as we just arrived to S.C. The property and surrounding buildings (all are spectacular)were just completed and are an ode to the Gullah Geechee people We started with the pimento cheese biscuits with a warm sweet potato butter. These are not the traditional biscuits you find in a TX breakfast place - that said I thought they were delicious! Hard surface crust, definite pimento flavor and a sizeable country portion Lunch for me was the fish and grits , fried Catfish with tons of grits. Loved the fish , perfect cook. Fish was hot , and still moist with a great crust . My wife had the chicken and waffles - fantastic. Several small chicken pieces (my only criticism) over waffles. Super crusty, moist chicken with enuff spice accompanied by a spicy hot honey (awesome)! Make sure you venture around the property and enjoy the varied open area seating or play corn hole.. great place to visit for lunch! read more

We were very excited to be dining here and have some regional food as well as get away from the nearby crowds of HHI. We booked a reservation and when asked if we were celebrating anything we added it was someone's birthday. The torrential rains earlier meant no market or outside socializing but the grounds were immaculate and creative. What a charming spot. We were seated promptly and our drinks came out quickly. Then about 20 minutes went by before anyone looked our way even though the other tables around us had completed their meals already. We were disappointed that the menu didn't reflect what we found online and the dishes we planned to order were now specials sometimes. Nevertheless we settled on Fran dip, gumbo and a salad with jerk chicken. All dishes were excellent and the seasoning was well done. Tender chicken on the salad, the right proportions of rice/liquid in the gumbo and homemade nachos for the crab dip. The menu also boasted d easers from the bakery next door but the server said the bakery. Was closed and we opted to skip it. Portions were good we took a meal home. I would go back for the gumbo and to taste the fried chicken. We learned end it was our server's first night so that may account for the delay. The interior was beautiful. read more

Visited while at a conference in nearby Hilton Head. The area is great with the restaurant, bakery, & market, as well as the outside play and sitting areas. Brings to mind a comfortable family property. We sat at the bar & had dinner at the restaurant. We were pleased that we visited on an evening when they had live music. Servers were very pleasant & informative when explaining the menu to us first-timers. Ordered a couple appetizers: the B-Rolls & Greens & Cream dip. The dip was collards & cheese and had good flavors. There were 3 different B-rolls, "buffalo biddie", deviled crab, & "samon n' cheese", and all were delicious. Although I was physically full, my eyes kept seeing such delicious looking plates coming out so I had to order more. The hostess greeted us warmly upon arrival. We had reservations and were seated promptly once the rest of our party arrived. The team was also very accommodating to my friend's mobility needs, ensuring she didn't have to go up the stairs. Ma Daisy's Porch is beautiful! You can tell that there's great attention to details from the decor, landscaping furnishings etc. Our server Tee was very attentive and provided stellar customer service! She provided us with great recommendations and she was very enthusiastic throughout our experience! We had two appetizers: Biddies Crispy fried chicken wings tossed in Geechee sauce and the Crik Fries. The apps were so good! The wings were crispy and the house made sauce was great! Our server brought us some jerk ranch and it took it to another level. The fries were flavorful and tasty! The apps were honestly our favorite part of the meal. We ordered the following entrees : Da Biddie & Sweet Tata Batta 8 out of 10 Sweet Potato Waffle served with a crispy fried chicken wings with hot honey drizzle. My friends said that they couldn't taste the hot honey drizzle on the chicken but when they got a side of it the hot honey sauce it was a hit. Geechee Surf & Turf 7 out of 10 Smothered oxtails on a bed of creamy grits, topped with grilled shrimp and our crab butter gravy. It wasn't very flavorful but the grits were creamy. Shrimp & Grits 7 out of 10 Creamy grits, smothered and topped with shrimp stew and fried shrimp. My friend added a catfish and lamb chops. We waited for 45 mins for a table. That part was fine. Usual to wait for a long time to get into good restaurants. Where it went bad was we waited another 15 mins after we sat at the table to see a waiter. Our drinks were never filled. Flies were all over our food. We were outside, but it was bad. Don't waste your time with this place. Couldn't even tell you how long we waited for our food just for it to be cold and the wrong meal entirely. We ordered off the lunch menu to our waiter who put in our order with no problem just to then get our food from that same waiter now saying we couldn't order off the lunch menu on the weekends while handing us a meal we didn't want or order. When we proceeded to pay, we asked for money off for the inconvenience and were told the mandatory 20% gratuity was taken off. All while our original sides we ordered were coming out as we were paying. The staff was extremely passive AGGRESSIVE. We then asked for the manager, who seemed to be 20 years old working in the bar. I saw this place on my FB feed and got really excited and decided to take a road trip with some of my family down from the Atlanta area. The exterior of the buildings is beautiful. The outdoors area is inviting and welcoming. The interior design is well put together down to the beautiful palm tree style fan lights going up the stairs. We went for brunch. The service was great for the most part, but there were some things that need improving. For starters we ordered the biscuits that are supposed to come with 3 different butters. When I ordered we were not told that they were out of 1of the butters. I had to ask about it and then I feel like they should've just offered a duplicate of one of the others to make up for the the one they were out of, but that never happened and then it took forever for a knife to spread the pimento cheese butter on which it really is not spreadable on the biscuit. We ordered the lemon drop flight and on the menu It says that it comes with 4 drinks and me and my cousin were going to split it and both have 2 and when it comes and only has 3 drinks and I had to ask about the fourth one and then was told that it was a mistake on the menu. They eventually made it right and brought us a fourth one, but it took forever and it's crazy how we weren't told that again in the beginning when we ordered it and I had to ask about it. I had the stuffed turkey leg with gumbo. I did not realize that their gumbo is a tomato paste based gumbo and no shade to the chef or anything but it just wasn't my favorite but no shade to him. I was so excited to try this place. I love the concept and the grounds. I got to the restaurant for my reservation. They were not very busy at all. 1/2 hour later I am still sitting at my table after the server stopped by and didn't even want to take our drink order. We seem to be more of a bother to her than a guest. So after sitting there a little longer, we just got up and left. We went down the street for dinner. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. I'm giving a 5 star because everything I ordered was excellent and I ate every drop. The service was very good and the staff pleasant. A very inviting atmosphere. I had the oxtail with collard greens, fried okra and the pecan bourbon sweet potatoes. Spot on! My husband had the gumbo which was good just different. More of a tomato base. A very large portion with the grilled shrimp. Plenty of shrimp and cooked perfectly, possibly the best shrimp we've had in this area. Two suggestions: The restaurant needs additional variety of hot sauces. All they have is Texas Pete. Personally I'd love to see a "cup" size gumbo so I might enjoy that as a starter.
