Very friendly employees. A step back in time as the overall feel of the restaurant is steeped in tradition from the chairs to the counter to the dumbwaiter in use. Pies were delicious and the mash was also tasty. Tried the stewed eels and they were perfectly tender. Liquor on top was a great compliment to everything.

Went for Lunch Food - 4/5. The food is rustic and comforting. Pie had a well baked crust that provided a firm dough for the meat filling. The filling was tender with a nice gravy. Mashed potatoes had a homemade charm to them having lots of butter and small chunks of potatoes for texture. Green liquor was mild and lacked a distinct flavor. It did have use in soaking up the pie to give it a softer bite. A healthy serving of vinegar helped out every item, especially when mixed all together. Service - 4/5. Quick and efficient service. Value - 4/5. While I'm not familiar with the standard prices for pie and mash, I felt that 2 pies 1 mash for £8.85 was affordable. I've noticed that this section of London seems to have lower prices in general, especially compared to the touristy sections of the city. The food was good in a rustic way, but not amazing enough to make it a quintessential restaurant. The restaurant is located a good distance from other attractions in London, requiring a time investment in your itinerary. The opportunity cost might not be worth it as there are numerous pie and mash establishments in the city. Parking - N/A

This is a great old Victorian-era work-a-day eatery, essentially the Victorian equivalent of a fast-food place, which has hung on, serving the same small range of simple dishes. It is still run by the same family. The dishes are basically meat pies, eels in stewed or jellied form, and mash. The food is simple but tasty. One gets it with or without green liquor, i.e., parsley-based gravy. It's all great with the gren liquor and nice doses of vinegar. They also serve traditional sarsaparilla. The place has retained its old character with lots of white and green tile. One orders at the counter and then sits down. I really appreciate it when traditional old places, however, simple, hang on and keep up their traditions and this place also get bonus marks for that.

No trip to London is complete without a visit to Manzes pie and mash shop for a 2&2. That's two pies, double mash and mysterious green parsley sauce over the top. Add some salt and a few splashes of vinegar and you are ready to enjoy some traditional London grub, even if Mr Manze started out in the mountains behind the Amalfi coast. If you are feeling brave you can try the jellied eels but the pies and that licquor are the main attraction here.

This is my first time in country and I wanted to try something local. This place was amazing. The waitress walked us thru what to try and were interested in our experience.

A great place for a traditional glass of sarsaparilla to go with a pie, mash, and eels.

The restaurant is in a cute little spot with a few other restaurants. Great vibe with indoor and some outdoor seating The fresh fish and wine pairings are outstanding. We started with sea scallops which melted in your mouth. So good! Then we got a bottle of white wine with fish pairings (they had 8 local options the night we visited). I had the sea bass, and my husband had the trout. So good that I picked that sea bass apart all the way to the bone, which is saying a lot given that it was a very meaty, generous portion already. I tasted the trout, and it was equally amazing. Very impressive and fresh! I wish we could've actually tried some dessert because others around us looked very happy, but we were so full it didn't make sense. If you like fish, go out of your way and stop here! You won't regret it.

Enjoyed patio dining in the evening without a wait. Everyone is so lovely and charming here, including their guests. I am a big fan of their chef, what a wonderful host she is! She made accommodations for my love since he couldn't have anything on the menu being gluten free. She created a dish for him specifically. She made the most incredible butter fish and he loved it. I was craving the Maldon Rock oysters and loved the vibe here. The presentation of all their dishes is beautiful art. Did you see the oyster picture???? I had the St Austell mussels and the cream sauce is spectacular like melted goodness dripping in each taste. Who would think almonds could be paired with mussels???!!! Ooeemmggee. I almost went with the rum baba dessert. But the lemon verbena panna cotta is superb with the delicate white chocolate and pistachio crumbles. Come sit here. Be at peace with whatever. Leave control to the staff to entertain and host you. Do your best to not smile too big at The Garrison.

The space itself is beautiful decorated - some trendy wall paper paired with warm wood tones. Its inviting, cozy, has a very pretty bar. We were seated in the main dining room where the manager explained to us that the Brigade is a social enterprise. Meaning, they help to employ and educate members of the homeless community in London so that they can lift themselves out of poverty and enter into the food/bev industry. Great food with a great cause, SIGN ME UP! On to the food - it was VERY good. We ordered two local beers. I loved mine, it was a mead style that wasn't too sweet, but perfect to wash down all the noms. We started with sourdough bread. This was perfectly toasted and paired with butter topped with crystalized salt. YUM. We also had roasted bone marrow and the cornish rump of beef. The bone marrow was good but it was the beef that really blew me away. Brigade uses local London ingredients and this beef was no exception. It was perfectly cooked to rare and I enjoyed every bite. We also got a side of chips, because carbs are life. These chips were SO GOOD. Admittedly, we came to Brigade because we saw a photo on Yelp with fish and chips, which they no longer serve. So happy we ended up here to explore the menu, as a meal filled with carbs and beef is always on my favorites list, and it was no different here. Service was super friendly, and we ended up getting a discount on the bill because they had a promotion going on in November. Double win!

Before I go on, I have to thank the staff for allowing us to be seated because the restaurant was fully booked yet they managed to squeeze us in. That was so generous of them and we just want to acknowledge them. Ok. So, the portion was generous and beautifully plated. The steak was tender, rich, and slow-cooked to perfection, packed with deep, savory flavor from the ale. Every bite was hearty and comforting -- exactly what you want when you're in London. The gravy was silky and robust, perfect for dipping those thick-cut chips, which were golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside. It also came with fresh greens, roasted tomatoes, and crispy onion rings that added great texture and balance to the dish. You can tell this is proper pub food done right -- no shortcuts, just bold, satisfying flavor. If you're looking for a classic, filling English meal that absolutely delivers, this is it. I'd order it again in a heartbeat. Not a bad start to our first night in London. Bonus: They have a downstairs pub that stretches across 3-4 rooms so definitely grab yourself a pint after dinner. Charles Dickens visited the site when it was a coffee house and it's mentioned in Little Dorrit. But the real reason to visit is for the food. Borough market, just across the road may offer a world of different foods, but The George Inn offers traditional British pub food at its best, in warm, historic rooms. This is your place if you're looking for authentic fish 'n chips--they're fresh, lightly battered and perfectly fried without being greasy. I also had the mac 'n cheese which used real vintage/sharp cheddar--and a lot of it--excellent! So you'll get good food while enjoying a historic inn where, for hundreds of years, travelers changed horses, got food, drink, and lodging before the railway era. IMPORTANT TIP: You order food at the bar--but you will need a table number. So you'll need someone in your party to sit at a table in the adjoining room. There'll be a brass plate with a number on it which you'll give when you order--so the food can be brought to your table.
