Just touched down in London town! For our first meal in England, British cuisine was on my group's mind. They wanted to try Shepherd's Pie. Yelp is not as popular in England, so I took to the internet to find a place which led us to The Windmill. We came to the pub on a weekday evening. When we arrived there were a ton of young adults on the streets drinking and hanging out. Initially, I thought there was a long wait, but I learned it's part of the culture. When we walked inside, we were seated immediately. The restaurant is quaint, cozy, and a fun pub with a rooftop bar as well (reservations recommended for the rooftop). It gets quite loud and lively inside but that's part of the culture. The service by all was greatly appreciated. I have dietary restrictions and they went the extra mile to check in with me. All of the staff who helped us were kind and courteous. She had the Dorset Lamb Shepherd's Pie which she quite enjoyed. I had the Smoked Salmon, King Prawn & Atlantic Haddock Fisherman's Pie. My pie came piping hot. There was a lot of seafood inside--it was rich, creamy, and hearty. I was only able to eat half. He got the Pork and Sage Sausage Roll which was savory and reminded me of an elevated pigs blanket. For dessert, we shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding which was so good! So moist, sweet, warm and delicious. We were all pleasantly surprised with our meals as everything was delicious. I recommend The Windmill for a classic and fun pub meal in SoHo. This place was suggested by my daughter after reading some reviews on it so I was a little curious as to whether I'd be able to go here and have some real unique items from the area. I was not disappointed their menu and location are small, but very focused. I really enjoyed the service that we got when we were there the friendly rip Arte on the phone call to tell us what our reservations were OK. I wanted to have at least one meal in a London pub. Our hotel concierge recommended the Windmill. It was unseasonably warm and the street outside the pub was crowded with young people drinking and chatting. We were seated indoors in a quiet room filled with tourists. The decor and mismatched chairs were charming. The outdoor terrace dining room was closed for a private event. Erika was our waitress. She was very nice. I started off with a solid pint of local lager. We both ordered pies. My wife had the potted lentil pie. She loved it. I had an excellent Guinness braised short rib pie served on a bed of leeks. Food amazing!! Scotch egg came out as a ball, and when cutting into the egg oozed out. Fresh and hot! The Pies were good, preferred Steak & Mushroom, although steak is a pot roast. The buttered greens delightful and best chips in London here!! Service was great, very nice and hard working! Gave water first thing when sitting! Ambiance was good at noon, quiet and empty. The Kitchen opens at 12 but they let us in around 11.40 am. A great place for award winning pies. We had to come back again to try the Gold award venison pie which was sold out last time we came. It did not disappoint. It was hearty, full of meat and tasty and hot. Everything came with a side of veg, a choice of mash or chips and a jug of gravy. My steak and kidney pie was delicious, full of flavor and so hearty. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Definitely a great place for award winning pies. read more

When traversing Bond or Oxford street, this gem of a British pub is located in between the side streets. It's not entirely overrun like the Main Street counterparts. And the ambiance is amazing with old Dutch pub style. When to enter, you will see a lot of Dark woods and different levels. Came for the food and got a Guinness short rib pie and an order of scotch egg. Well--the scotch egg was decent--soft boiled egg encased in a meatloaf type coating. Odd that it was served with cocktail sauce. On to the short rib pie--I question if it really is short rib...but the meat was decently tender-in a brown gravy and I can taste Guinness. But the pastry around it was basically raw-- theee was dark outer coating but doughy uncooked texture--basically I just ate the inside of the pie. Can't leave London without trying some scotch eggs, shepherds pie and a chicken pie. OMG the best I have ever had (doesn't say much since my experience is limited) but the eggs were perfectly cooked with light fluffy crispy meat on the outside. The shepherd pie was SO good. We ordered the seafood pie and pulled pork pie. Both dry , overcooked, lacked flavor and almost no seafood. The Scotch egg was excellent and the peas were solid. Came here after travelling from Bayswater, on Saturday, 15/2/20, only to be told that the kitchen was closed for the night, but the bar was open for drinking. People were actively eating at tables when we walked in, so I'm not sure how long the kitchen had been closed. Really disappointing as this very pertinent fact isn't on their Google or Yelp pages. My friends and I ate almost everything on the menu and absolutely everything was fantastic. The atmosphere of the Windmill was really fun and local. So many people hanging outside with drinks. Inside you might have to wait for a table but it's worth it to order food! The sausage roll was really good and a great started. Unique take on a classic. The soup of the day was a butternut squash and potato. It was rich and flavorful. Really worth a try. The salad was presented in the same type of dish as French friend so it was a bit strange and hard to eat without an extra plate. The best dish by far was the pies! I was in Mayfair for a very brief business trip and was craving an authentic pub that serves good steak pies. Bingo! This place seems like it's been around forever but it was really hard to find on Google. I credit Yelp for helping me find this gem. Perhaps it's because this joint has such a low profile that it seemed like all locals. I didn't hear any other American accents. Only criticism: service was slow. I did find it a little amusing that I was asked for my credit card upon ordering dinner. That was a first. (Maybe they've had a lot of dine and dash bandits in the past?) She was super friendly and let me taste a few of the draft beers before deciding. She also made food recs that were really on point. Here's what we had: 1. Sausages & Mash& Gravy -- 5 stars. Sausages were juicy, flavorful and just plain old delicious. The mashed potatoes were silky and buttery, the gravy was so so so so delicious. 2. Steak & Mushroom pie -- 5 stars. Buttery, perfectly crumbly but crisp crust. Delicious filling. 3. Shepard's pie & kale - 3 stars. The lamb filling itself was tasty, but the mashed potatoes had no real flavor and needed lots of Worcestershire sauce. The kale was blanched and tossed in oil with no flavor. Odd pairing. 4. Fish & Chips -- 2.5 stars. It was....ok? Not really worth ordering. Fish not crispy, chips not crispy. My daughter regretted this menu choice since everyone else's food was pretty tasty. Steak and Mushroom pie. This little beauty was quite simply the most delicious pie I've eaten. The pastry was flaky on the outside and warm and soft on the inside with a rich thick gravy and satisfying chunks of beef. Beware the whole bay leaf, be glad it's so wonderfully flavored! The teeny pot of gravy was on its own delicious, when added to the pie helped take it to another level. A lot of food on one plate, the chips were delicious, but I decided to leave them in favor of eating all the pie :) We walked in on a rainy early evening and couldn't have been greeted by a more welcoming true English pub atmosphere. My kids and I were referred to the Windmill Mayflower by our British friends. They told us the best meat pies in town were at this lovely establishment.....so of course we had to check it out. We were not disappointed! We ordered the steak and mushroom pie and the fish and chips. The pie crust was light and flaky, a nice size and filled with the most tender steak and mushrooms. The gravy was awesome and we had both mashed potatoes abs chips which my son drenched with malt vinegar. The fish was a nice portion. It was light and flaky and enough for two. The three of us shared the meals and it was plenty of food. The atmosphere was reminiscent of an old English tavern with old wood plank floors and tile walls. Absolutely fantastic pub dinner! After getting turned away from the place we had originally planned on, the folks walking out behind us recommended The Windmill as a better option, and we were glad we listened! The crowd outside in the street with pints had us worried about the wait for a table as we walked upon, but apparently they were just having a pre-dinner drink, because we were lucky enough to get a table right away (another few minutes and we've have been out of luck though). Definitely a place for local professionals; which meant a bit loud as pints disappeared, but polite. The food was probably the best British food I've ever had actually. The bread, olives, and butter was a nice simple start, and more substantial than we'd expected, but the pies were truly outstanding. The Shepherd's Pie was delicious; a good balance of potato and filling, and the filling itself was rich and flavorful without being too rich or greasy like they can be. I was also impressed with the side of greens, which were somehow cooked to be slightly crispy, but weren't greasy or dried out. Definitely a winning meal, and a place that will be on the top of my list next time I'm in London. read more

We were wandering along Regent Street looking for a pub when a passerby heard our discussion. A local, he directed us back past the Apple Store to the Windmill as the best pub in the area for a pint. Following his directions led us to this wonderful pie shop restaurant with a few drafts on offer. We ended up with two pints of a real ale called Milkwood, which was oddly produced by Brains brewery. I might have to steal one of these glasses that says "Brains" on it. Good service, the very loud bell rang at 10:50 with an apology for last call and then again 10 minutes later. They have a fruit machine that was loudly being used for a trivial pursuit / battleship game by a bunch of shirt and tie folks when we got in, it got a bit quieter so we could actually hear outselves talk. read more

I had the steak and mushroom pie and my fiancé had the chicken, bacon and leek pie and both were delicious. Excellent beer selection, great atmosphere...oh, and the dessert pies are JUST as delicious as their dinner pies. We shared an apple and berry pie with vanilla ice cream ( you can also get it with custard) and the apples were soaked in the berry compote, bringing all of the flavors together. My friend and I visited this place in the end of February after some shopping in London. When we came in around 5:30pm on a Thursday night, we went to the top floor and was asked if we had a reservation and answered no. There was no one else there and we were sat down. I don't know if it was just me but the waitress was not so friendly and she stared at my friend and I intensely the whole night while standing at the bar right across from our table, which made for an uncomfortable experience. I had the fish pie and rosé wine and shared a meringue dessert with my friend. They were relatively tasty, but I wish I had tried their award winning steak pie instead. My brother and I were trying to find some food to eat and stumbled upon this place when looking for pies. What a great place! We came in around 6 PM and was about to give up on the place since there weren't any seats available when we saw an opening. I'm glad we decided to take it, since the pies were really quite up to the hype. I got a game pie and my brother got a steak and mushroom. Both were very delicious. The crusts were crispy and the filling was perfectly seasoned. The side of mash was excellent as well and is the perfect (and classic) accompaniment to the pie. In addition to this, we got some beers, which just made this quite an awesome meal. The atmosphere of the place was very pub like. As a pub, that makes sense, but it didn't really hit me until I got there. There were a bunch of people chatting away and drinking beers and stuff. Even the private rooms were booked and full of people. There were just so many people all around, which was why I was surprised a seat even opened up when it did. Let that be a note of warning if you plan to come here around dinner time. For the food though, definitely recommend to anyone visiting. I found the pie to be absolutely amazing. read more
