Steak n ale

Very cozy spot with excellent & friendly counter service and lots of space to sit. We both had the beef pie - we should have changed it up a little. Really wanted to try eels, but I was too afraid of trying and not liking it and then===food waste. Would definitely come again.

Location: Very close to Greenwich Market, Greenwich Park, Cutty Sark, Maritime museum etc. Food: Hearty meat pie and mashed potatoes. Tasted good and wasn't pricey. Service: They prefer cash but will take a credit card no problem. This is a counter service restaurant so don't expect to be served. Prices are very reasonable. Ambiance: Tables are first come first served. I think I saw 3 eating areas. Main area, rear area beyond stairs and upper level. They have some bottled beers and ciders.

If you want an authentic experience, checkout Goddard's at Greenwich. It's extremely busy, but the staff is efficient. I chose the gravy instead of the liquor. It was good, but after seeing other people's plates with the liquor, I had extreme FOMO.

So when you walk up the line looks insane buts it moves and is quick serve. You take your tray and go upstairs where there in tons of seating. We got traditional pie and mash (one liquor and one gravy) liquor was good but probably would have liked gravy better. We also got the sticky toffee pudding with warm custard in too and it was stunning. Highly recommend for a dose of British warm comfort food. And very filming

Chicken and mushroom pie and mash with traditional liquor sauce

First time having traditional "pie and mash" in London. I had chicken and mushroom pie with "liquor" sauce instead of the "gravy" option. It was outstanding! Comfort food at its best.

Goddards at Greenwich is a traditional pie & mash restaurant that opened in London, England in 1890. It was founded by Alfred Goddard. 'Pie and mash' is a traditional English meal that became popular in the 1800s. The pies are actually savory and filled with minced meat such as beef, chicken or lamb. The pies originated in the 1700s as eel pies. The Thames River was once heavily populated with eels. They would be spiced, stewed in stock, and placed in the pies as a filling. These pies were often sold as a street food. By the 1800s, the price of eels has gone up so the pie filling was replaced with minced meat. Several pie shops began to appear and served pies with 'mash' (mashed potatoes). Alfred Goddard successfully ran his pie shop in Deptford for several years before passing it on to his sons Robert and George in 1936. A second shop was opened in Greenwich in 1952 and each brother managed one of the two locations. The Goddard Family still runs the business today, although only the Greenwich location remains. In addition to the restaurant, they also opened a factory which produces and distributes savory pies around England. I visited Goddards in April 2019. My wife visited there when she studied abroad and wanted me to experience traditional English pies and mash for myself. We stopped there for lunch after visiting the Royal Museums of Greenwich. After looking over the menu, I decided to order the Traditional Minced Beef Pie with Mash and my wife had the Chicken and Mushroom Pie. She told me to get gravy on everything, but we noticed that the menu listed gravy and 'liquor' as dressings. We wondered what exactly this 'liquor' was; was it alcoholic? Two locals overheard us and explained that the 'liquor' wasn't actually alcohol but rather a parsley cream sauce. They also explained that this is the more traditional dressing, not gravy. We decided to take their word for it and order liquor. Although eels are no longer stuffed into the pies, they are still a popular side dish so I ordered some eels as well. Everything was delicious and we ordered some local hard ciders to wash it down. It was so cool to have a traditional English dining experience and we will definitely go back the next time we visit London!

Rhubarb Crumble with custard

Okay, so as I say this, please bare in mind I am American. The place was cute, not bad pricing, and a decent amount of space to find seating. I got the Original Pie and Mash from the menu with gravy and the Rhubarb Crumble. Personally, the Pie & Mash were just okay, but I'm used to a range of spices added usually. All in all, it was a plain. However, the Rhubarb Crumble was really good and can easily be split between 2-3 ppl like we did. Got the custard with it - again plain so I might opt for the ice cream (? I think it was). Service was polite and no issues. Food came out decently fast too. Again, I found the food plain BUT I think from my gatherings of being in London for about 3 weeks, British food tends to come across that way. So, it was worth 4 stars in British food terms if that makes sense (?)

Great food and true British ambiance! First stop after our river tour and the food did not disappoint. Quick service and very people friendly staff.

Meat pie (beef) and mash with the traditional parsley gravy

Our last day in London we took a ride up the river to Greenwich and stopped in here for a traditional British meal. We loved the history of the place and the food and staff were phenomenal. Extremely reasonably priced, we all devoured our meat pies and mash including my 4 year old son who had the kids meal of a mini meat pie, mash and a drink for £3.40!!! Highly highly recommend if you visit Greenwich

We went for a visit in Greenwich and stopped in this institution for a quick bite. We ordered the pie and mash with the mushy peas. This hit the spot and allowed us to catch our breath while we planned our next location to hit while in Greenwich. Can't mess with tradition -

The Lamb and Rosemary Pie was good. I had the mash and beans on the side and it made for the perfect sized quick lunch.

It's centrally-located in a big park square and has a huge outside terrace with multple bar stations. Sometimes there are concerts or films set up in the park so you get a free show while you get tanked after work, and everybody is there after work. I miss getting drunk with my bud Nicky Glasses at Parlor, miss you buddy. Some day we will have to go there to reminisce inside bevys.

We were given menus and offered a choice water - including free tap water with ice and mint leaves, were presented a complimentary salmon amuse bouche and ordered cocktails. So far, so good. Once our delicious cocktails arrived, we ordered our starters and mains, and a bottle of wine. Unfortunately the white wine arrived warm, but it did come with an ice bucket, so it cooled down whilst we ate our starters. To our surprise, the mains (a standard burger and chips) arrived stone cold, but we let the waiter know, and he seemed genuinely apologetic and brought us fresh ones, which were hot. The food wasn't bad, but neither was it anything outstanding. The whole Parlour bar and restaurant menu has a quirky "circus" theme, with the cocktails named things like "tears of a clown" and "fairground millionaire", and the chips served in mugs or flower pots! Our burgers were served on a plastic cafeteria style lunch tray. Whilst the service was good, the prices were a little on the high side given the quality. I suppose it's the central Canary Wharf location that draws in customers looking for team lunches paid for on company credit cards.

I came…read morehere after seeing so many great reviews on both Google and Yelp, but was beyond disappointed. Let me take you on this unfortunate journey starting with the food... and I tried a bunch of the items from the set dinner menu (unfortunately)... Crispy Calamari - This was actually not too bad, as they got some decent crispiness on the outside, although there was not much flavor beyond that and it was still grocery store quality. Chicken and Sesame Dumplings - This on the other hand was below grocery store quality. I've literally had better frozen dumplings than this. They were just kinda mushy without much quality stuff inside and the sauce on the side was some weird overly sweet BBQ sauce that totally did not pair with the dumplings at all. Chargrilled Minute Steak - Minute steak? More like half an hour steak considering how tough it was!! Cutting through this thing was an arm workout and attempting to bite through it made my jaw sore. And despite the glob of butter on it, there was zero seasoning or flavor to the steak at all. I feel bad for the poor cow that had to be sacrificed for this! Fish Goujons and Fries - This half empty plate of 4 smallish pieces of fried fish fell victim to the same issues as the calamari. Flavorless and bland, just like the fries that came with it. Black Cherry Chocolate Mousse - After enduring the prior dishes, I felt I had to do myself a favor and treat myself to a dessert. Surely, there was no way they could make a chocolate mousse taste bad right?? Wrong!!! They really defied the odds here by somehow making this mousse so bad that I literally could not eat it - and that is coming from a super non-picky eater who is normally a big fan of chocolate mousse. For some strange reason, they thought it would be a good idea to add salt (yes, salt) to the mousse, and not just a pinch... this thing was saltier than a mouthful of ocean water! They really should've put some of that salt on the steak instead... And to make matters even worse (which I didn't think could be possible), the whole bottom half was filled with some gross cherry sauce that tasted so artificial and like it came straight from a cheap store-bought bottle. We lost 24.50 GBP and 17.50 GBP for these 3-course and 2-course set menus, respectively. Now on to the service... which was no better than the food... From the start, we knew it would be rough when we had to ask our waiter multiple times just to bring us some water. All the while, he was just happily chatting with all the tables around us. When it came to bringing the actual dishes, the service speed was also super slow. At one point, he assured us that the next dish was "on the way", but that was clearly an empty promise based on how long we ended up waiting. When bringing the dessert, he just put down two spoons right on the dirty table. And speaking of dirty items, the water glasses looked quite dirty and I almost wanted to rinse them before drinking from them. As a side note, the ketchup that they brought us (which we had to ask for), seemed very old and liquidy... and it exploded on me after just a bit of a shake beforehand. The interior of the restaurant is the one thing that isn't too bad, as there is actually some decently nice decor and an okay environment. But that does not come close to making up for the rest of the experience... I am honestly shocked at how bad Bill's was. From subpar service to straight up inedible food, it is definitely a place that you should avoid. Trust me.

The establishment has a nice mixture of cozy and airy, which was perfect for a lazy(ish) Sunday. I hate to use this word, but I'll use it anyway (because I can't think of a better descriptor): the service here is "super" friendly, and very knowledgeable, particularly regarding the ales on tap. The barkeep gave us a few sample pours without waiting for us to ask, which we greatly appreciated. Because of that, we were more than happy with the pints we ordered. Moving on to the food: the roasts were delicious, in particular the pork loin, which was moist and flavorful. I enjoyed my roast beef as well. The Yorkshire pudding was wonderful and I might have been just as happy eating that alone for my meal, to be honest. The pub is in walking distance of the touristy areas of Greenwich, so it's easy enough to put some good food in your belly and continue on to your sightseeing, afterward.
