Maggie Jones's was intimate with approachable, knowledgeable, and friendly service. We came as a long-time resident of England gifted us a voucher to his favorite place that he comes to every time he visits. He certainly did not overhype the restaurant: everything was excellent. We started with a whiskey sour and a Pimm's Number One to drink. Both were strong but balanced. For apps, I had the stilton, bacon and walnut salad, and it certainly did not skimp on the toppings. My partner had the avocado vinaigrette, which is a salad with cucumber and avocado, and all I kept hearing in my ear was "oh my god!" Who knew a salad could stir up such emotion? For entrees, I had the roast pork belly with apple sauce and mashed potatoes. My partner had the shepherd's pie. The roast pork belly was orgasmic. The meat was buttery-tender and the skin was crispy. The apple sauce it came with was tart but lovely and perfectly complemented the pork. My partner is a shepherd's pie connoisseur and he said it was the best he has ever had- and he had it several times in Ireland! The table came with gravy and a vegetable plate of peas with mint, sautéed leeks, and carrot purée. As per the review that mentioned "the sweet potatoes were disgusting"... maybe that is because they are puréed carrots! I had not previously tried puréed/mushy carrots but they were enjoyable. For dessert we shared the chocolate pot and the burnt cream. The burnt crème is basically crème brûlée but the custard is a bit thinner. Even if you do not have room for dessert, make sure you order it as you will not be disappointed. All we had to say about each course was "unbelievable!" The prices come off as intimidating but are truly bang for your buck. The set menu is £29.50 for two courses, and you get to choose if it is an appetizer and entree or an entree and dessert. Stumbled upon this little gem by accident. It was the original horse stables for Buckingham Palace YEARS ago. They then turned it into a restaurant. Oh my goodness! I am in love with this place! Our server Paulo was funniest and nicest person! We loved talking to him! He told us the story of the restaurant and suggested some items for us. Hands down, this was the best meal that we enjoyed during our entire trip to Scotland, England, and Ireland. An absolute disappointment. I have lived in London for a long time and this has been on my list of restaurants to visit. The wait staff were incredibly rude, and food was clearly tampered with by the kitchen. I arrived for lunch with a friend, and we were seated upstairs. We were immediately asked what we would like to drink and placed order for two beers. The first waiter took the order, and then returned with a glass of water. A few minutes later, another waiter came up and asked us if we had ordered yet. They took our food order and we had said that we were waiting on two beers. 35 minutes later and after several more tables show up and have had their orders taken and drinks delivered, we are still waiting for our drinks. I now ask for a third time regarding the status of our drinks. The waiter rudely and promptly walks away and states that they are "with the bar." 50 minutes later, we finally receive our drinks, and they are dropped off by a different waiter. Additionally, after we had ordered our main food, we asked if it would be possible to add a salad to one of our meals stating that it didn't matter when it came out (before or with main was totally). The same rude waiter states that next time we need to order everything when we put the food in as the kitchen was already working on the order, and that he had to make a special request with the chef to accommodate as if it was the most inconvenient ask he had ever received. This was all for a salad. Interesting how he knew the status of the food being prepared in the kitchen, but was unaware of the status of two bottles of beer that we had ordered 45 minutes prior. The food was subpar, and the waiter clearly complained about us to the kitchen, as I had a suggestive portion of potato piled on top of my Shepherd's pie in the shape of a phallic symbol. This was absolutely disgusting and completely uncalled for. It was very gutsy of them not to proactively take the service charge off of the top it was an extremely underwhelming experience and disappointment with the lack of professionalism and rudeness of the stuff. it was not worth the money and left feeling disrespected by the restaurant. read more

A local friend recommended Maggie Jones's to us so we stopped by after Kensington Gardens. The decor is very nice and quaint, while the service and food is delicious. We started with Venison Terrine & Duck Liver Pate, both were really great and served with a salad that had a yummy vinaigrette on it. Between the 5 of us we also had the Onion Pie, French Onion Soup, Fish Pie, Wild Boar Sausage&Mash, and Rump of Lamb. Everything was so good (can't attest to the fish pie as I have a mushroom allergy but my friends loved it). The French Onion Soup was probably the best I've ever tasted. It's a must for your London visit! Such a charming French country style cozy restaurant. Candlelight, hanging baskets, wooden tables and lovely staff. I can actually say we had the best French onion soup we've ever eaten! I had the lamb with the same mint sauce my mum used to serve. My BF had the steak and was easily able to substitute the chips for mashed. Nothing was out of the question for our waiter. Everything was delicious. The only thing I would have liked was for the mashed potatoes to be hotter. If we had not had so many activities planned we would have eaten there more but reservations were slim...and rightfully so. We visited Maggie Jones on our first night in London during our recent honeymoon trip. What a great start to our culinary tour of London! First of all, the place is super cozy and romantic. Loved how dimly lit it was and all the little antiques and trinkets strewn about. Service was warm and welcoming. Our server, Paulo, made some great recommendations. We started out with the leek tart and the onion soup to start. Both were delicious, but the tart was the crowd favorite. We shared the pork belly with applesauce as our entree. It felt like upscale comfort food. Loved it. We finished off with a crumble and we both enjoyed some good wine over dinner. When Paulo heard we were on our honeymoon, he came back to the table with a list of bars and restaurants he recommends, which we thought was really sweet and helpful. I'm a little conflicted over this review because Maggie Jones's has a lot of charm. But here goes... The good: The decor and ambience is great -- complete with candlelight, eclectic furniture, mismatched plates and cutlery. Very welcoming with loads of character. The staff is friendly and attentive and totally professional. My starter, onion soup, was excellent. Seriously good. But the problem is that it raised my expectations very high. The main course: The roast chicken was presented beautifully with perfectly rendered skin and a fantastic deep color. Unfortunately it was on the dry side and the seasoning was uneven. My friend ordered the steak and kidney pie. Again, the presentation was beautiful -- very traditional with a deep colored crust. Unfortunately the steak had burnt during searing and when it was deglazed that burnt taste spread throughout the entire filling. The sides: chip were over-fried and the gravy was over-seasoned. The cauliflower cheese however was very nice. For dessert we ordered the apple crumble which was very traditional and lovely. Unfortunately the custard had a flowery under taste that I couldn't quite place and took away from the dish. Even so, I think this place is wonderful. Visited this gem of a restaurant on New Years Eve on my first night in London (as recommended by a friendly local on the street... thank you!). Upon entering the dimly lit restaurant, we were greeted by the cheery staff who were all dressed in fun costumes. The place was decorated with streamers and the tables sprinkled with confetti and party poppers. Service throughout the night was exceptional. Every waiter ensured that we enjoyed our experience. As for the food, it was a New Years Eve set menu for £40/person. For starters, I had the "Maggie's Tart," which comprised of soft warm eggs and spinach. The tart was cooked to perfection! For the main, I had the "Chicken & Artichoke Pie." Again, the chefs knocked it out of the park. The top crust had just the right amount of crisp. The pie was packed with chicken too. The main came with sautéed spinach and purple cabbage, both of which complimented the pie well. To end the night, I had the bread pudding. Despite how full I was, this pudding had to the best I have ever tasted. The pudding itself was not overly sweet. The bread had a crispy outer edge, soft, spongy center, and raisins for added punch of flavor. Staff, food, and atmosphere all taken into account... a definite 5 out of 5. Her chicken had a weird sweet sauce and did not taste good either I rushed home to brush my teeth after because it was the last bite I ate and wasn't good. Her sides with the chicken were good but what looked like sweet potato tasted like green beans? Maybe it was squash? Anyways 3/5 because some of the food is amazing atmosphere amazing server was wonderful but some items were nasty. I yelped for an hour and found a few places that looked good within walking distance of my hotel, but by the time I got outsidel I decided to wander and I'm so glad that I did. Just 10 min from my hotel, I stumbled upon a cute little, well lit front of Maggie Jones's. They had just opened - it was quarter past six. The staff was friendly, the specials were delightful: I got the crab and avocado appetizer -- served on a bed of arugula and other greens. It was a very healthy portion. I loved this place. We never settle for touristy eateries near landmarks. We like to look on yelp for something different with an excellent rating. My husband found this one. We almost gave up on it as we could not find it at first but I am so glad that we did. We were the first ones there for the evening. The staff were warm and welcoming and the waiter..the skinny french guy(I think French) was so funny and sweet. They let us sit upstairs. The food was delicious. I am still sad to this day that I did not order the roast chicken like our son. I am still craving it 2 months later. My fish pie was delicious. I loved the decor. I showed the pictures to my sister and her kids and the funniest comment I got was that it looked like Shrek and Fiona should be dining there....please do not take that as an insult. I thought it was cute. The most amusing thing for us was that they seated 2 older couples at the table next to us. Low and behold we heard them talking about Bart and other San Francisco transport. What are the odds the only two table occupied upstairs would have people from San Francisco. The food fresh and made from scratch and the decor adorable. I found that the food in Britain smells like I remember food smelling when I was a kid. It has no preservatives and it just smelt delicious. The only thing is that I can never remember the name. We have a supermarket close by called Mollie Stones and I always end up calling this place Mollie Jones.
