The atmosphere is relaxed, but there was a bit of competition for tables around 6pm, with some less than courteous guests grabbing a table when others were waiting first without checking in with the server on staff. If there are plenty of tables, it may not be an issue to simply take a seat, however, if tables are in short supply- best to check and make sure no one else is waiting first before grabbing the next available table. I had time to kill before meeting up with some friends so I stopped by The Blackbird for a beer. When in London, I have to try to hit up as many pubs as I can while I can, right? The pub had a nice upscale ambiance. It's first come, first serve on tables. FYI, you cannot order food standing at the bar when there are no vacant tables. You only can order food sitting on a table. For those who know, I'm not much of a beer drinker. Since I don't know what to order, I told the bartender to surprise me with something local. She poured me a Fuller's London Pride Outstanding London Amber Ale. It was perfect because earlier in the day, while heading to Stonehenge, we passed by their brewery. The beer was good and easy to drink. Since I had time to kill, I looked at the food menu and saw that they offered a Haggis Scotch Egg. It's a dish on my list of things to eat in London so I ordered it. The kitchen didn't take long to get it out but it took time for me to finally be able to flag down a server to order it. My wife and I had Sunday Breakfast here in September 2024. It was a 15 minute walk from our AirBnB and so very worth it. The pub/inn has a traditional vibe in the interior with some modern twists. Kind of the best of both worlds. It was very cool. Staff were friendly and professional. We did not book reservations and were able to be seated right away. The food was excellent. The perfect way to start a busy Sunday in the city. I had an eggs benedict, my wife had a full english breakfast, with a pot of tea each. Portions were good - filling but not wasteful. Flavours were delicious. I'd say this is worth a trip out of your way to grab breakfast, of if you're lucky enough to be staying in one of the rooms, its an easy trip downstairs. I really went in to try the Sunday roast and we also go the fish and chips and I have to say the fish and chips is one of the best I've had in London in all my visits to the country. The staff were very welcoming when we came in for Sunday roast in the mid-afternoon. We had made a note in our reservation to please have space for our stroller, and we were given a nice table in the back where our son could continue to sleep while we ate peacefully. The Duo was amazing and I'm so glad I didn't have to choose between the chicken or the beef. My husband and I each got one because we didn't want to share. The sides were great as other reviews noted, from the potatoes to the roasted carrots and the cauliflower. Blackbird is a corporate run establishment posing as a small traditional old style pub. They're owned by Fuller's. Dead give aways include a quick Google search and poor, mass produced meat pies. The interior is dim and charming. We sat at the bar until our table was ready. I asked if they had a cocktail menu. I was rudely told that they did not by the bartender but then later, when we were seated at our table, was handed a pretty extensive gin and tonic menu. As per usual, I inform servers about my nut allergy, which unfortunately is a little complicated. I can have peanuts, almonds, and coconut but no other nuts. And traces of nuts are fine. The server told me that I couldn't have any of the meat pies because they all contain every single kind of nut. I questioned him, which I don't normally do, but that sounded a little ridiculous and we had come to Blackbird specifically to eat their meat pies. He returned with a huge corporate binder and showed me how every single nut was checked off for all of their meat pies. Logically, I concluded that they do not make their own meat pies and that the dough is processed in a factory whose machinery may contain traces of nuts. Because no one grinds up every single kind of nut and puts it in pie crust unless they really have a disdain for nut allergy sufferers. Pie crust doesn't even have nuts! I appreciated their thoroughness and how seriously they took my allergy (really, I did) but felt they were pretty uninformed about their ingredients. So we decided to play with fire and order one anyway as an appetizer. Just one mini pie instead of the 3 pie sampler we had wanted to get. Not surprising, I was perfectly fine. And it was a blessing in disguise that we didn't order 3, because the steak and London pride pie was terrible. It was super salty and had no steak in it, just gravy. The meat pies I've had at stadiums were infinitely better. For our mains, we shared the traditional fish pie (that one apparently doesn't have nuts since there's no pie crust) and the fish and chips. The traditional fish pie was also super salty and highly processed. It was like a fish chowder you'd get from a can with mashed potatoes on top. The fish and chips was good and probably the only thing we ordered that they actually made in house. The fish was crispy and huge and served with mushy peas, tartar sauce, and lemon. The chips were good as well. I was between 2 and 3 stars but leaned toward 3 due to friendly and attentive service (at the restaurant, not at the bar), really good fish and chips, and good gin and tonics (but how hard is it to get those right?) However, I would definitely save your meat pie craving for somewhere else. read more
