Really good meat pies here. The aroma hooked me, but as I feasted my eyes on the plates of the dishes of other diners, I was reeling right on in to this adorable pie shop. There were about a dozen different pies to choose from and everything smelled so good that it was almost impossible to choosr. After careful deliberation, I decided upon the Steal and Stout pie. It came it a portion of piquant gravy to pour atop the pie, and it was fantastic. Thick chunks of tender beef housed with this thick delicious crust. Unbelievably good! The rocket (arugula) salad with tomatoes and diced red onion was so fresh and delicious. Arugula is my favorite leafy green, so I'm thrilled that it it so prevalent here. The English cider was crisp and refreshing with just the right amount of sweetness. It was excellent company for a fantastically fulfilling lunch.
Delicious meat pies on the lower level. We had the beef & stout and the chicken curry, which were both phenomenal. I would highly suggest adding the mashed potatoes and gravy..they have both a vegetarian and beef gravy that you can pick from, and the gravy is free!
I am unequivocally head-over-heels in love with Battersea Pie. Yes, it's in a prime tourist area (Covent Garden) and yes, that means the prices are slightly inflated in an already pocketbook-busting, expensive city; but the pies and pastys here are DELICIOUS! This is my go-to pie shop whenever I am in London. I love it. I dream about it. I get excited the second I step off the plane in the U.K. I love everything about this cute little pie shop -- the friendly employees, the adorable decor, and most of all the tasty, tasty pies. I've sampled almost every item on the entire menu and I've not had a dud yet. Everything has been delicious: hot with a flaky crust and freshly prepared. My favorite menu item is the (surprise!) vegetarian cheese, spinach and onion pasty. I also adore the baby fish pie. My husband gets the steak and stout pie with an extra side of gravy (which comes in an adorable baby gravy boat). Note that the dining room area is super tiny and is woefully inadequate for the restaurant. Consider yourself lucky if you are able to dine in and don't have to takeaway. If I had to create a can't-miss foodie tour of London, Battersea Pie would top my list.
Popped in to Battersea Pie on a Friday evening for dinner. It's a cute place on the lower level of the market with a nice selection and fair pricing. We ordered the Chicken and Mushroom and the Steak and Stout pies. The were very nice looking, but they were not filled with much meat and didn't have much flavor. Overall experience was just okay. Not sure I would come back here.
A proper pie shop in the basement of Covent Garden. Don't get me wrong, the pie was yummy and prices were great given the fancy surroundings, but the filling was a bit thin and I've had better pies at other places in London. So for now, giving 3 stars...
After being a tourist all day, I was in desperate need of a fast but delicious dinner. My pie hit the spot! Small place, but not too busy around dinner time. They have a variety of pies to choose from and they all come with a side of your choice. I chose the chicken pie with mashed potatoes as my side. The mashed potatoes were a little dry, but the pie was flaky and flavorful! It's in a great location, right in the center of Covent Garden. Battersea is a must try for a traditional pie and mash!
For those that know me well, you understand my love of pie. You will be able to imagine my excitement at unearthing a new specialist pie store. Battersea Pie looks very pretty tucked away in the depth of Covent Garden Market. You can eat in at the cute little tables but I wanted mine to go. There are seven types of pie on offer, but I'd already decided the fate of The Winstone (Steak & Kidney). I'll admit I initially baulked at the excessive £4.50 price tag, £5 if you eat in. You can get sides of mash, beans, peas etc... for between £2.75 to £1. You can ask for herb & red wine gravy for free. So... to the pie. Just me, the pastry and the meaty goodness. For £4.50 would my expectations be met. No. In fact I was gutted. This was a soft pastry pie. Where was my slight crunch as I bit through the pastry? There was none. Where were my chunks of steak & kidney? They were hard to find. I cannot tell you how bitterly disappointed I was. I have recently come across some sensational pie shops, and was eager to add Battersea Pie to this honoured list. They are by no means bad, but they fall well short of what I'd expect for a £4.50 pie.
So good, so delicious, so worth it. We were hungry and tired and discovered this little corner restaurant after hours of shopping and it didn't disappoint. It is clean and very nice looking inside and out. At the counter we ordered a Mushroom Chicken pie and Butternut Squash with Goat cheese pie along with a small glass of their sangria. Each pie came with a little self pour of gravy. The pies were steaming hot and fresh and very tasty. The gravy complemented each very well. I could have had a second they were so delicious but the portions were perfect. The sangria was fantastic and complete with a bit of carbonation and fruit bits for fun. I'd return here in a heartbeat.
Resist the large Shake Shack's temptation and go downstairs to try the British specialty - meat pie! As one of the classic British food recommended by a friend, Battersea is a great choice to try. Located on the below-ground level of Covent Garden, Battersea Pie is surprisingly reasonably priced and the portion is bigger than I thought. With plenty of choices, it would be hard not to find your true calling. Whichever you choose, the pie is truly filled with a generous amount of meat and - I pray you - do not expect this to be merely a snack because it could fill you up as a meal! Anyway, if you are around Covent Garden, definitely go downstairs and pick up a meat pie to eat! Take-out option will save you 1 GBP from regular price.
Comforting & savory! The Covent Garden can be madness and after trying to get a seat at a few other restaurants, my husband & I found this small place tucked under the stairs. They had an assortment of pies & I got the Butternut Squash & Goat Cheese Pie with a side of Baked Beans. Savory goodness! The buttery, flaky crust with the squash & goat cheese was an unexpected, amazing match. The Baked Beans were a great complement adding a little sweetness to my meal. The pies are only around £4.50 to £6 & the sides were £1.50 to £4. Quick & comforting meal that left my tummy full & happy. Our wallet was also full & happy. :P Heads up! It's cheaper for take out than eat in. Also, sides can be huge! My husband's sides were bigger than the pie itself.
Wait - steak and what? KIDNEY?! I'll take two. In the States the word "pie" is an exclusive reserve for the dessert kind - cherry pie, apple pie, coconut pie. The only exception to this rule is Shepard's Pie. The Colman's mustard paired extremely well with the steak and kidney, offsetting the heavy game-y flavor of the kidney. A job well done on the butternut squash and goat cheese pie as well.
This a a small space with limited seating. I would say two people with shopping bags max. Truly. There was a table that seated four but it was a squeeze. With that being said the pies are worth it. I had the meat with stout pie and chicken mushroom pie. The chicken and mushroom pie was traditional so if you're not sure what to get or want to play it safe, I'd say get this. Really creamy and delicious. My husband got the Steak and Meantime Stout Pie. Lovely! The Meantime gives it a slightly smokey or oaky taste. Highly recommend this! Each pie was very filling and a great way to take a quick break from the chaos of Covent Garden.
What: The best cheap meal on the Plaza. How much: Pies are around £5 (prices vary according to what you get, and also if you eat in or take it away). £10 should be more than enough for a very filling, satisfying lunch of pie, mash, gravy etc... Covent garden has been near the top of my absolute favourite places in London since the first time I went there back in 2011. I tend to hate touristy places, especially when they're really crowded, but there's something about Covent Garden I simply can't resist. As for most heavily touristy places, food is still a bit meh around there though. And/Or rather expensive. But, as for any general rules, there are always exception and I think I've found Covent Garden's! Battersea Pie's shop is a tiny unassuming shop located on the lower level of Covent Garden's Plaza. And it's most definitely the best value-for-money meal around! The whole place is pretty simple. It's all white tiles, marble-like tables and wooden stools. Plus all the necessary condiments. Which is perfectly fine by me (for some reason, I rather like this no-fuss look). But what I like even more are the pies, that are really quickly brought to your table by one of the lovely, always smilling members of staff. From then on, it becomes really difficult to resist the urge to dive in. Don't even try, just gave in to buttery, flaky pastry encasing the most moreish mince beef and onion filling. Hot, salty and very satisfying, there isn't much more to ask from a pie, is there?
Battersea Pie Station, under the arches of the lower ground floor of Covent Garden's Market Building, serves up proper British grub. Simply look for The Pie Shop sign and pick your pie which is served with silky smooth mashed potatoes and lashings of rich gravy. Every time I eat a pie this place is my benchmark for the best pies ever! The menu at Battersea Pie Station includes classics like steak and stout, minced beef and onion and chicken and mushroom, plus more creative, veggie options including butternut squash and goat's cheese. The steak and stout is my ultimate favorite! This place is my go to pie place every time I'm in London. I always try to stay in Covent Garden just so I can come here. This is my basis of the perfect meat pie with the pleasingly firm crusts and sides of mash and roasted potatoes are so delicious. The rich red-wine gravy comes separately in a small jug. I smother the pie with the gravy. Ingredient quality was excellent. They have mini pies and the regular sized pies. Even for a counter-service place this little cafe is terrific value - and you will be surprised that for Covent Garden you can eat a reasonably priced and uber delicious meal that makes me full the whole day! 5 stars can't wait to come back! read more
Mrs. Lovett has nothing on this place! Perfect for a quick humble meat pie dinner before a fancy pants opera. Every dish I tried was a hit. Minced Beef & Onion: The most popular, apparently. Smooth and moist inside with a buttery flaky outside. Steak & Stout: Same great crust, but with a very distinctive inside, chunks of firm roast and thick gravy where you could actually taste the stout. Probably my favorite pie here. Chicken & Mushroom: A nice variation from beef, but by no means lesser. With it's large chunks and umami gravy, this was like a quick hit fix for when craving a proper chicken pot pie. Mash & Gravy: The mash was smooth and buttery. The gravy was more than plentiful. Kinda lives under the shadow of the delicious pies though. Sticky Toffee Pudding: Good, but not great. The toffee sauce felt a bit too thick and wasn't as warmed as I like it. The sponge cake was alright, but kinda dry, like they just plopped into the toffee sauce puddle. But it did do a good job of soaking up the sauce with a little spoon dexterity. read more
Oh. My. Goodness. I have to admit that I really visited here because I wanted the Sticky Toffee Pudding, but the sea of pies with perfect crusts had my will shattering ;) I went for the chicken and mushroom pie. The flakiness of the crust, the crispyness of the outside of the pie was perfect. Given my love for flavoring, I had to ding one star because I felt the filling wasn't salted well enough, nor did it carry much flavor (for me). The gravy helped, but the pastry really took it home. As for the dessert, if I could give this place 100 stars, I would. The sticky toffee pudding was out of this world. I ate the whole thing in about .02 seconds flat. There is no doubt that I will be back, for this dessert if nothing else. The place was perfectly clean, the service was absolutely wonderful. All of the servers were kind and friendly and helpful. They even confirmed that the dishes we ordered had no nuts by checking in their manuals! So great. Price point was great too. Will be back for the dessert! YUM! :) read more

A cute pie shop in Covent Garden! I had the chicken and mushroom pie with a coleslaw side. The side was actually bigger than the pie, I couldn't finish :p the pie was great!! Would love to go back to try the other ones The prices are a little cheaper to take away (a pound or something like that), but if you can find a place to sit, the atmosphere is nice and casual. read more

Absolutely loved this place. My boyfriend came here 2 years ago so when we passed through Covent Garden last week he said we HAD to stop because they were the best meat pies he'd ever had. Well... we ended up going twice! I was also in London a few years ago and learned the hard way that my mushroom allergy & meat pies don't mix (my face looked like a fireball). Alas, when I walked in to Battersea Pie & asked if they were all made with mushrooms, only the specified Chicken & Mushroom was and they assured me I was safe to eat anything else. I had the Steak & Stout pie, while Michael had the Minced Beef & Onion. They were so incredibly delicious. The crust is so perfect and the flavors just unfold into your mouth. I loved it. The second visit we had on this trip was on our last day. We had a late afternoon flight and came here for a quick bite before the airport. When we came in a few days earlier I noticed a Butternut Squash & Goat Cheese pie that I was going to order to avoid mushrooms. It had been on my mind so I ordered that and Michael got the special "Ginger Pig" Bangers & Mash. Obviously much different orders and we did both wish we had reordered the same from the other day, but the food was still delicious. My pie tasted like Thanksgiving. It was a little different than I expected. It had chunked squash & onions but was very good. Michael's special was also delicious, the potatoes were great and adding a little of that Colman's Mustard is the perfect touch. Will definitely go back next time we are in town. read more

Delicious flaky-pastry traditional British pies and mashed potatoes in busy Covent Garden are on offer here, great for a late Sunday lunch while walking around London. We tried the steak and stout pie with mash. Filling was very flavorful, with large chunks of tender steak in a stout gravy studded with sweet onion. The puff pastry was done perfectly -- not heavy at all. Mashed potatoes were buttery, smooth, and moist. The mini butternut squash and goat cheese pie surprised us with how well-balanced it was. We had expected the goat cheese to overpower the delicate squash, but the squash held its own and lent a delicious earthy sweetness to the savoury filling. We are glad to have found the Battersea Pie company -- 5 stars!! read more
Came here after reading Yelp reviews. The place is cute and very clean. The staff was very friendly and the prices were fair. I had the steak and stout pie with mashed potatoes. My friend had the butternut squash pie with green beans and potatoes. Everything tasted amazing! My plate came out really late so they gave us free brownies and extra potatoes. Great customer service. Highly recommend coming here! read more
I met a friend here for lunch before heading over to the Strand for some musical action. It's a very small shop with some indoor and outdoor seating as well as take-out options. I ordered the butternut squash and goat cheese pie with a side of green beans and it was delicious! The pie had a thick crust and a delicately flavoured filling while the beans were still a bit crunchy and just lightly buttered, everything taste fantastic! We were also given a vegetarian gravy, which was also quite tasty. The staff were very nice and service was quick. The only reason I'm not giving five stars is because there really isn't enough seating and the stools we sat on were quite wobbly and uncomfortable. Other than that, I'd definitely recommend this place! read more

Battersea Pie is more on the side of fast-food pie than gourmet pie despite a very pretty interior. I had the Winstone pie which is the ever popular steak and kidney pie. I really liked the crust as it was flakey and fluffy so in my opinion, the pastry was very well done. However, the filling was lacking. Couldn't find much kidney or steak and when I did, I thought it tasted like slightly overdone meat. I also had the cole slaw though and it was really good. It isn't a light cole slaw as it was a bit heavy with mayo but sometimes that's exactly the type of cole slaw to hit the spot! As I said, ambience was very nice. Dim lighting with both large tables and stools for one-person diners aligning the wall. Overall good place to go for a cheap lunch and hearty meal, just don't expect gourmet pies :) read more

Visitor to London and found this cute pie shop tucked away in the lower floor of the Covent Market. It looked awesome as we walked in, and the food lived up to it! Your traditional British meat lies with sides like creamy mash available (and worth getting). The special drink for the day was a lemon mint iced tea and it was incredible! Pricing was fair (~6£ for a pie) and there was a vegetarian option as well!! Would definitely recommend this place to anyone!! read more

The pies here are very crispy and flaky, and full of meat. The seating is a little cramped, not good at all for big groups, but a bit cozy feeling. The food comes out fast and the hot. The mashed potatoes were a bit of a disappointment, having a gummy sort of consistency. Overall a good little shop in the middle of a cramped mall. read more

We were really impressed with these pies! We tried the minced beef and onion and the chicken and mushroom. We all had a side of mashed potatoes with beef gravy, and green beans which were really fresh,and seasoned well. Tried a brownie for dessert and it was moist and chocolaty perfect to go with my tea. It was a tiny place tucked under the stairs but bright and modern due to the decor. It was a warm and filling meal on a chilly day. read more
