I'm sorry to say that too many meals I have paid a lot of money for have been extremely forgettable. I gave F. Cooke five stars because I'm a big believer in the importance of atmosphere when eating out. I'd recommend this ramshackle little pie & mash shop over many gourmet restaurants because its genuine and it gives you a window on London's history, as well as a story to tell. Believe me if you've ever wanted to travel back in time, here is your chance. Before I came to London, jellied eels ranked alongside spotted dick and toad-in-the-hole as a uniqely English meal that seemed more like a fairytale than reality. After all, I reasoned, isn't curry supposed to be the new national dish? So I was happy to discover F. Cooke still plying its wonderfully dated trade. Admittedly, it took me a while to pluck up the courage to visit for more than a bit of window shopping - I'm not sure it helps trade that passers-by can see the congealed eels wobbling in their jelly right in the front window. But visit I did. Myself and a somewhat sceptical friend sat down in the white-tiled interior feeling as if we had just stepped into the 1950s. I ate the normal, un-jellied eels. My friend had a pie. Both dishes came with a mug of tea, a big dollop of mashed potatoes and a glug of a weird green gravy. Needless to say, it was very cheap. I can't pretend the food was excellent. The mash was bland and the gravy tasted like the juice from mushy peas. What's more, there was so much of it on my friend's plate that the crust of his pie - meat contents unidentified - was soggy and, literally, floating. However, the eels were not that bad at all. They tasted like sardines and I found myself wolfing them down, the look of disgust on my dining partner's face steadily growing. Perhaps some day soon I will be daring enough to try the jellied version.

First time eating pie and mash. The eel licorice and jelly where surprisingly good. Joe (the owner) and his wife where great hosts. Highly recommended for a true English meal.

This is a great choice if you're looking for a hearty traditional English breakfast of stewed or jellied eels. Get a combination plate with a delicious meat (beef) pie dressed with parsley gravy. The chili infused malt vinegar on the tables is a nice condiment on everything.

However, it was a whopping 93 GBP for 600g, which is meant to share between 2 people, but still not that much (refer to my pic). This is simply just too high of a price for this. Bone marrow and onions (12 GBP) - This was surprisingly good. Although the marrow itself didn't have much of a flavor, it was a nice buttery consistency to spread on the bread. The onions were cooked very well. Sticky Toffee Pudding (9.50 GBP) - This was more of a bread like dessert than a pudding, but was tasty and not overly sweet despite the toffee (which is good). The staff are very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The service speed is pretty quick. The interior is decorated in a nice yet not too pretentious steakhouse style. There were still plenty of open tables available on a Sunday night. Overall, while the steak and food are very good, the steak is simply too overpriced to justify me getting it again. Maybe worth trying once but not twice. I would potentially come back for the other menu options though.

We are staying here at the counting house, but this review is about our dinner…read more We had dinner at the counting house for the last night of our London leg of our trip. I just have to say in general, everyone at this hotel and pub are just extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I'm not that familiar with pub culture and apparently the way it works is that you have to go up to the bar to order your food. I asked the hostess about it and she said that if we want a waitress there is an added service charge. We were on three walking tours that day and we're exhausted so I didn't care about paying the service charge. We started off with Yorkshire, puddings and gravy. I'm from the US. I don't usually get to have a Yorkshire pudding so I wanted to try it. It's kind of like a popover with gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was okay but the gravy was delicious. I saved the gravy and used it for the next part of my meal. We both had fish and chips. Unlike the US when I ask for malt vinegar, they know what it was and had it right away. I can't tell you how often in the US I'm giving red vinegar. The the fish and chips were spectacular. The fish was crispy even after sprinkling on the vinegar. The fries were very nice. Not as good as blacklock but very nice. And I am fry snob. My wife ordered sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I couldn't even finish my fries, so I passed. Overall a very nice meal and perfect for us as we were exhausted from walking all day and only had to go upstairs to our room afterwards.

Got the gravy on the side, didn't think I'd use all of it, before I knew it, it was all gone. And you wouldn't think that the type of mash or type of gravy or type of sausage would matter that much, but they really do all have distinct flavors! I will be mixing mustard into my mashed potatoes from now on. Originally came for the sticky toffee pudding, so of course we ended with that. Marvelous! The toffee sauce is so comforting and rich, the cake was so moist, and it was perfectly balanced with the ice cream. Didn't detect any dates, maybe they were too finely chopped. Also the apple and blackberry crumble just didn't hit the same; it was slightly dry and on the sour side (maybe don't take a bite directly after the pudding!) Service was so helpful and friendly; I'm sure they love watching people fall in love with their food. Quick with refills and offered extra condiments if needed. Great air conditioning as well (always a plus), and I loved the green blacksplash and blackboard caligraphy on the walls as well. Bangin'
