Braised lamb and lentils
Chris C.

So, London weather in April in the mid 70s and beautiful sunny is crazy, right? When that happens you know you are in for a special day and tonight was no exception- the wife and I had a fine meal at Rochelle Canteen that was as great as the weather! The restaurant is in a usual setting where they share some common space (apparently) with a school. As a result they are kind of hidden behind a high brick wall and door. Only a sign on the walk path actually let us know the restaurant was there. The restaurant has dining inside and out and it was all being used that night. To start, the wait staff was great, helpful and on top of things. Our meal started with the Fennel celery Berkswell (cheese) and caper salad. Totally recommend this dish! Also had fresh fill and fruity olive oil. At the end of eating that we swore we would try to figure out how to make this at home. My main was the Braised lamb lentils and green sauce along with cooked greens. Lamb cooked to perfection and the lentils so complimented the meat. The greens were delicious (I think they were Tuscan kale leaves) as a side. The wife had Courgettes chickpeas and goat curd (all vegetarian) and she loved it. We finished by sharing a slice of Lemon meringue pie which was the best our slice I've had in years. Why isn't this restaurant in my home town?? I'd be there every night!

I'm in love with this place and want to have a month of sick days so that I can go every day. Open only midweek, until 4:30, all BYO. It's certainly not vego but the food has so much lovely vegetable influences. Everything was so fresh and so much of it was freshly picked from the garden. On the garden... This is the ultimate spot for a sunny day as most of the tables are outside in this beautiful outdoor setting. There are options inside but bookings are highly recommended (for all of it actually). The food is things like cured trout salad with garden picked cress or smashed broad beans with feta on sour dough or terrine. So kind of country side fresh British would be my classification. Like home cooked by thousand times better, no need for extra seasoning. Staff are excellent and the chefs and genius. If you finish your meal quickly, grab a deck chair on the lawn and soak up some uk rays.

The Rochelle Canteen is tucked away in the courtyard of a very unlikely place: an old Victorian School. From the outside there is no sign this restaurant even exists apart from the little 'CANTEEN' buzzer which you have to ring to get in. This old disused Victorian school has now become the Rochelle School, home to a series of artist studios and the Arnold & Henderson caterers. The canteen was opened by the Arnold & Henderson caterers to feed the artists and visitors alike. After a buzz at the door and entering through the old 'Boys' school entrance you find yourself in an old school courtyard with flowerbeds and groomed grass. Located in an old bike shed, the Canteen is now a functional restaurant with a big white room, open kitchen and outdoor seating. The service and the food is faultless. The menu changes all the time so it is difficult to tell what will be available, but it is generally gourmet British food. The food is hearty and rich, but I recommend braving a desert, as I had a lemon posset there and it was one of the best deserts I have ever had. The Canteen is only open for lunch on weekdays and due to its hidden location it is a special gem which should be spread only between the most deserving. This is the secret garden of Shoreditch.

I am horrified I have never been here before. Downright disgusted at myself. A revamped school canteen serving 'new' British food from the St John school of thought (but with far better results)... Why oh why haven't I partaken before. Coupled with a beautiful location, especially when it is sunny and you can bake outside, and charming service I will be taking more long lunches. PS the food is simple combinations of three to four ingredients cooked well. My ox liver and bacon main was exception, a pea/ broadbean and rocket starter was sensitively and finely put together and a pecan caramel icecream was outrageously good

What a disappointment! Rochelle Canteen was one of the 50 best London restaurants and either I chose the wrong dishes, either it doesn't live to its expectations. The place itself is hard to find (thanks to other helpers, or I would never have find it): it's hidden behind the walls of a school. When you find the green door, buzz the restaurant and they'll let you in. Menu changes everyday but I must have picked a bad day. For starter I had a crab soup with croutons and rouille which was ok (not mind blowing, but still ok) and then what I think would be an exciting dish to try: lentils, onions & goat curd. Don't get excited, that exactly what I got: a plate of lentils, with an onion and some goat curd. All that for £22. Service was really slow (even when I told them I only had 1hour to lunch and they said it'll be ok) A big big disappointment for me.

Jerusalem artichoke! Yummmm~
Michelle U.

This was a nice little find in East London. When I trek all the way to the other side, I like to find little "hideouts", to which this really fit the description. I had a nice beetroot, apple and ginger juice with a fried Jerusalem artichoke. I never knew you could eat the whole artichoke once it's fried nice and crispy. Some of the other dishes were very inventive, but didn't blow my mind. However, I heard the menu changes all the time so I will be back to give it another chance! It's such a cute lunch spot, after all.

Breakfast delights.

Well, today I was…read moredoing just that and it was then that I stumbled upon this branch of the small but mighty Taylor-Street-Baristas emporium. It was actually the buzz inside this place that attracted me most - dozens of dolled up city folks were patiently waiting for their lattes and cappuccinos, while soaking in the yuppy/hippy atmosphere of this space. In fact, I would go as far to say that this is a good mixture between the efficiency of Starbucks and the quirky authenticity of a coffee shops like Look Mum No Hands or St Ali. The stand-out experience for me was the bircher müsli. In fact, it was just like I love it: moist, fruity, & sweet! On the other hand, I was rather disappointed with the drip/filter coffee that they served, as it was quite bitter and off-tasting - hence only 4 stars. Overall I really like this place: there's ample seating and fantastic people-watching!

Nice and chilled vibe, not too loud, lovely friendly staff and the coffee really is something special. I'm not generally a fan of milky coffees but on a trip to oz my mrs made me try a "proper flat white" made by a friend of hers (one of the most talented and passionate baristas I've come across). It was amazing. The London versions I'd tried before had been crappy ersatz versions thereof...until I tried this place some months ago. Full bodied, creamy with just the right amount of bitterness. My regular coffee (about 3 a day on last tally) is an espresso, and i still believe that the italians can teach the worlds best hipster barista a thing or 2 about espresso (cappuccino, latté etc...) and the problem I've always had with these new-wave hipster cafs is that while they can often churn out lovely frothy milkshake-esque coffees, their espressos are disgusting, salty, up dosed/underextracted. None of that here. Nice, sharp and robust but smooth...and no saltiness.

It's an exquisite and well-restored piece of history…read more Initally, the idea of an exchange came in 1562. When merchant Sir Thomas Gresham (1519-79) established it, Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603) opened on 23 January 1571, and she granted it its 'Royal' title. The old structure had burned down twice. The current neoclassical style building was designed by Sir William Tite (1798-1873) in the 1840s. The long-term tenant was Lloyd's of London, an insurance market, for a century and a half. Now, the three-story-high, overarching glass dome provides the airy atrium with ample light, housing restaurants such as Fortnum & Mason, and high-end shops, including a Tiffany & Co. branch. Googling the oldest exchange, two answers turned up: ~ The Amsterdam Stock Exchange, founded in 1602 ~ The barter system was introduced by the Mesopotamian tribes around 6000 BC ... wondering why the London's Royal Exchange didn't make the list.

The Exchange gets its 'Royal' title after Queen Elizabeth I opened the original in 1571. an exchange building is generally utilized for telecommunications or foreign currency. However, as a commercial building, exchanges date back to at least the 13th century. The building is one of London's top luxury shopping locations, and visitors to the city should definitely add it to their list of places to visit. The stores at the Royal Exchange are hand-picked to elevate the elegance and class of the building. The beautifully designed courtyard also makes it difficult to resist spending a fair amount of time here.

Our pizzas didn't come out until after 3pm and 4 of us still didn't get the right ones. Complete disaster and the staff trying to 'fix' the issue didn't rush to come up with a solution. It's not rocket science, just make the pizzas! One of the girls said 'we did make them but we gave them to another table'...ok so then fix your mistake. When they finally made them they STILL made 1 wrong! We also had one person in the group who doesn't drink and was told she'd have mocktails instead, which ended up just being really sugary juice that she couldn't drink. It's a shame because the drag acts were great.

I haven't been at a market though for ages and haven't have any arancini for longer - so I was happily excited to see the Arancini Brothers logo when I was killing some time looking around the shops at Liverpool Street station. I immediately went up the stairs into Broadgate and was rewarded with a tiny little shop with a limited menu - stew box, salad box, or wrap. I do think they did more but I was blinded by the arancini... I really only wanted a box of 4 arancini with their lovely garlic mayo but thought I'd counteract the starch with some salad and went for the salad box. £4.50 I believe, for 4 arancini and some basic - but tasty - salad. As I went late in the day and they were going to close soon, the girl behind the counter gave me a couple extra arancini. They were as good as ever, but as it was late they were a little on the hard side. However, they were still delicious and I didn't leave a scrap of the arancini. The salad was fine - a lettuce mix, topped with shredded carrot with chickpeas, and then some jalapenos and crispy onions. I'm definitely going to be going back soon during lunch time to get some arancini done up nice and fresh, and hopefully will be able to update this to the 5 star review I know they deserve when they're on point.
