2.5 stars.
I've been hearing a lot about this place, and the general consensus (at least amongst my circle of friends, coworkers, etc.) is decidedly mixed. I've heard a couple people rave about it, but for the most part it's "alright, but nothing special."
Which, incidentally, is exactly how I feel about the restaurant. I went there last night for a friend's birthday dinner, and from the appetizers onward, I was never really won over.
Not to say that the food was bad- it wasn't. But when you try out a place that has so much hype surrounding it, you can't help but expect better.
First, we ordered the frankfurters, pretzels, and tuna tartar to share- a decision we immediately realized wasn't necessary, as they don't skimp on portion sizes. The pretzels were (as you'll come to see as a pattern) decent, but far from memorable. They're served with ground mustard (really good), mustard seed butter (not that good), and a fondue-like cheese sauce (heavy, but great), which I thought was a nice touch- it gives the dish a bit more flare. The tuna, however, was easily the worst tartar I've ever had. It was tasteless to a degree I didn't think possible, and resembled grapefruit when assembled on the plate. Definitely skip it. The frankfurters, however, were amazing- by far my favorite part of the meal. The sausage is delicious, the brioche buns are perfectly crunchy and tasty, and the sauerkraut on top is fresh and tangy. If I ever come back, I'm just going to order a plate of these for my entrée.
Speaking of entrées, my duck confit was both under seasoned and over heavy. The accompanying cranberry sauce is incredibly flavorful, but the small amount given to you coupled with the overwhelming blandness of the duck ensures that you'll run out of it within three or four bites, which is a real shame. Two of my friends ordered mussels, which are a claim to fame of Lyon Hall, and both of them were disappointed as well. As with everything else (outside of the tuna), it wasn't horrible, just so forgettable that you can't help but leave unsatisfied.
I should also mention that the service left one whole hell of a lot to be desired. Not only did our waiter come off as uninterested to the point of seeming rude, but he was very slow to boot. Every time he stopped by our table (which wasn't all that often), he had a look on his face that just screamed "I don't want to be here, you're all annoying me." This could very well be a problem that doesn't extend beyond this one waiter, but as I've only been this one time, I can't offer any other opinion.
If you've read other reviews, then you've surely seen people mention the bathrooms, and I won't deviate from the format either: they are really fun. Fun, you say? How could this be? Well, instead of a standard mirror mounted on the wall above the wash basin, there's a window, offering you full view of the opposite gender bathroom (and vice versa). It's a really fun, if totally random, feature, and any visit to Lyon Hall would be incomplete without seeing it.
One last tip: definitely don't eat here if you're looking for a quiet night out. The restaurant has terrible acoustics; my table all felt like we were eating right in the center bar of Spider Kelly's. It's incredibly loud, so either come prepared or sit outside (a far better idea in my opinion).
Lyon Hall seems like it has all the right pieces in place, but for whatever reason just can't get them together properly. Perhaps one day I'll return and walk out thinking differently, but for now I can only remember how I felt while leaving last night: sorry that we didn't go to a better restaurant for my friend's birthday. read more
