3.5/5 from me. I so wish half stars were an option -- I like the concept, the interior is beautiful and comfortable, and the service was sweet and lovely, but for me the product just didn't meet my expectations. Lux Bru is a new coffee shop and hangout space right next to Terrame in Madison. The somewhat unremarkable brick exterior hides a beautifully and tastefully (if perhaps a little bougie -- it's not LUX bru for nothing, I suppose) decorated interior. Cozy and comfortable armchairs, traditional tables and chairs, and a view of the spacious upstairs loft greet you as you walk in. A coffee menu includes traditional drinks as well as specialty creations that change frequently, as I found out, somewhat to my disappointment. I'd seen they were offering a peanut butter cookie latte a few weeks ago but didn't see any sign of it when I visited. They also have a cafe menu with some upscale and creative offerings, like a dessert blackberry risotto or ricotta toast. Some standard coffeeshop baked goods (muffins, bagels, etc) are available too. You can walk up to the counter and order. The two girls working on Wednesday when I visited were very pleasant and helpful. Sometimes I feel a little out of place in artsy, fancy, ~fashionable~ establishments, but they were nothing but welcoming. I enjoyed tucking myself into an armchair and people watching while my order was prepared. Despite being fairly busy, they got my drinks and muffin out quickly. For me, the coffee sadly missed the mark. I will provide a HUGE caveat, though: I'm one of those people who likes a very sweet drink. Every coffee shop has a different style -- some do the dessert-y type drinks that I prefer, and others (and I suspect Lux Bru is among them) go for a more traditionalist, very coffee-forward vibe. That doesn't make it bad; just not to my preferences. The abuelita mocha I had just wasn't chocolatey enough for me. I couldn't really taste chocolate at all, myself. Mostly just bitter, but decent, coffee. The $5.50 price tag I felt...okay about. It's not unusual for me to pay $5-6 for a fancy coffee, although the portion size for the price was a little small, in my estimation (5.50 for 12 oz). However, some of that $ goes, I'm sure, to outfitting and maintaining such a nice hangout space. For what it's worth, my coworker said she enjoyed her vanilla lavender latte that I brought back to her. Lastly, I ordered a double chocolate chip muffin to snack on. It was also $5, which is pretty high for a small muffin that wound up being pretty plain. It was a little dry, but a quick nuke in the microwave back at work helped the chips melt which moistened the cake some. It was fine, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was store-bought, and I probably wouldn't get one again unless I was really craving chocolate. I dunno. I am interested in trying their other wares -- a picture of a grilled cheese panini with tomato soup on Yelp seriously had me drooling -- so I may come back to give that a shot. The coffee is sadly not a fit for my tastes, but if you're a coffee purist who enjoys nice service and a comfortable space to hang out, work, or study, this spot may be a great fit for you.

    Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur was AMAZING! The only negative thing I could say was the attitude from the barista/cashier. I went during a time when there was only one customer in the store who was working on their computer, but the barista just treated me as if I was bothering him?? Not very friendly, and when I had asked about coffee flavor options all he said in a very annoyed/monotone voice was "the regular flavors" end of convo basically.. I didn't feel the urge to "bother" him anymore lol. Idk it was strange. I'd definitely go back just for the croque monsieur (I'd give it 6 stars by itself if I could)

This place is absolutely fantastic, I'm so glad I got a chance to stop by. The decor is very eye catching, and the food/coffee is phenomenal. I'd suggest stopping in if you get the chance! *try the chia seed parfait, I was amazed at the taste and presentation.

    Shrimp & Gouda Grits

I love this cafe. Great atmosphere, music, comfortable seating, friendly staff. The shrimp and grits are fantastic. The matcha was a very strong for my taste but good. I like coming to work here, it's real lowkey.

I found this gem to host my daughter's Graduation Dinner. Kim the Owner along with her daughter went beyond excellent customer service to make sure we had everything we needed . Looking for a venue to host a Bridal Tea and I can't think of a better place. Lux Bru will always be my "go to" for special events,

Most of the wait staff was wearing very tattered clothing and the worst offender was the bus boy. Although he was working his tail off, he looked like he hadn't showed in several days and hadn't washed his clothes in a week. His bus tub was disgusting. As he was cleaning the table beside us, he put the tub in the table top and as I turned my head to look over I lost my appetite seeing the condition of the tub. To know that he put it on top of the table made me even more disgusted. Not only was he bussing tables but he was also taking plates of food to tables. I, personally, would not have accepted food from him because it's very unlikely he washed his hands after cleaning tables off. Our waiter was nice but he looked very sloppy. I realize I'm not at a white table cloth restaurant but at least make sure the serve staff looks presentable. We won't be back.

I've been wanting to visit since they first opened and have been anxiously watching their social media for coverage of the beautiful dishes and drinks, looking forward for my chance to try their food. But this first visit did not at all live up to the hype or my expectations. I came on a Thursday about three weeks ago after my annual doctor's visit. It was around 11:15 when I arrived. Note this restaurant is in the bustling Providence area. It's an attractive and somewhat upscale shopping and dining destination and parking can be a bit of a challenge. I found the parking lot of a nearby hotel that had ample spots, so I took one of those and marched over. It did look like there was a parking garage not too far away. Anyway, the restaurant was about 1/3 full when I arrived. The hostess asked if it was just me, which I confirmed. She asked if I was okay to sit at the bar. My preference would honestly have been a table or booth, even a two top, but I told her whatever was easiest for her was okay with me, and so to the bar I went. The bartender took my order and brought my food and mostly left me alone, which was also more my preference. He was nice enough in our interactions and food was served in a timely manner. After I ordered is when things started to go downhill. First, I asked a waitress where the restroom was and set off for a visit. Despite it being earlyish in the morning, one stall was already filthy enough I didn't want to use it, and the other one was out of toilet paper. Fortunately I noticed before using it! I came back to my seat and was served water in a carafe. It wasn't particularly cold but the bigger problem than that was that it smelled like dirty dishwater when I poured it in my cup. Not sure if my glass was still dirty or the water itself was, but suffice to say, it wasn't pleasant. Next, my food arrived. I ordered the breakfast burrito with a side of fries. Others have commented negatively on the pricing here, but my experience was slightly different. I ultimately wound up being charged for just the entree. The description for the burrito does not indicate it comes with a side. I assumed I'd pay for the burrito + side, which was going to be ~$25. THAT is a price tag I'd say is too high, but I was ultimately charged for just the entree, which was ~$16. I still think that's a bit much for the quality and size of the food I was served, but I can see how it would be acceptable under better conditions. That said, I'm not sure if the burrito does come with a side that's included in the price OR if they just forgot to charge me for a side. Anyway...the food. The fries were the best part at exactly average. They looked pretty and were crispy enough. It was a pretty paltry serving even for the price I was charged; it would've been a VERY paltry serving at the $9 (!!!) a side of fries was listed as on their menu at time of visit. Ultimately though, my main grievance is with the burrito. It needed work in about every aspect. It was put together poorly, with almost all bites I took very uneven in terms of filling, and watery sauce dribbling out before I even took my first nibble. I did ask for no avocado, but even with that in mind, I thought the amount the burrito was filled was pretty disappointing - it was tiny and heavy on the tortilla. My first few bites were only of egg and a few bacon bits - no sign of cheese, tater tots, green onions, or chipotle aioli to be found. The eggs badly needed salt or really any flavoring at all. Eventually, several more bites in, I discovered some cheese and some tater tots, but even then, the flavor-meter was pitifully low -- idk how you make a tater tot not salty enough, but these surely weren't. For a while I was convinced that they'd put some sort of very strange glaze on the bacon because it started tasing oddly sweet (à la candied bacon), but I eventually could only come to the conclusion it was the very watery, very pale chipotle aioli I was tasting. I was expecting that to be slightly spicy and definitely thicker/more mayonnaise-y, but given the listed ingredients, that's the only thing it could've been unless something went very wrong in the kitchen and some other sauce was put on my burrito. The one slightly saving grace was the green salsa, which added heat, if not a ton of flavor, to the dish. I am both mad and sad to say that I have had Taco Bell breakfast burritos that beat this one by a country mile. I really like the design and interior of this place and the menu looks promising. The service was fine. People whose opinions on food I respect have lovely things to say about Loona's dishes. I can only assume/hope my first experience was a very odd one-off. I'd be willing to try again some time in the future, but for now, this was not at all what I was hoping for from a visit.
