    Cake and Eggs Breakfast
    Bailey B.

Really more like a 3.5 because I don't have any huge complaints, but I also probably wouldn't go out of my way to return here and so that makes it more comfortably in the realm of a 3 than a 4 for me. Came here after a doctor's appointment at around 11 on a Monday. There's not a ton of parking and the location is a little nondescript. I walked into a dimly lit but spacious setup. It's a little shopworn inside but seems clean enough. I was instructed to seat myself where I liked. The restaurant wasn't super crowded but the acoustics are such that sound carries and it was a little loud. I took a booth that wound up having a very uncomfy cushion, but I didn't want to confuse the staff by moving so I dealt with it. A waiter came by soon to drop off a menu. They serve breakfast all day and have some plate lunches. A lot of reviewers complained about the lunch options seeming canned or just not as fresh, so I decided I'd do a late breakfast/breakfast for lunch to ensure I got fresh food. They do a cake and eggs special that comes with scrambled eggs and pancakes. I got that with hash browns and bacon and a sweet tea to drink. The prices are reasonable here. My food came out to me quickly but not so quickly it didn't seem fresh. Overall, it was decent! My sweet tea wasn't super flavorful but it was thirst quenching. I think the best things were probably the pancakes; they weren't standout but just simple cakes cooked well and served hot. The scrambled eggs were fine too, though I wished for a little salsa or hot sauce to put on them. Hash browns were standard; a little under-crispy for me beneath the very crispy top, but I like them practically crunchy. One thing that was VERY crunchy was the bacon. I like my bacon cooked pretty well, but this was beyond that; I don't think I even finished it because it was just so crispy and hard. That was the low point. Again, nothing was really bad but simultaneously nothing really stood out, and given how far away from me this restaurant is I doubt I'll make a special trip. One thing that did stand out to me was a few dishes like chilaquiles and burritos on the menu. I noticed the wait staff were all speaking to each other in Spanish. I wonder if I missed out on the good stuff? Might be worth a try. If you're in the area, this'll do for a fast and adequately prepared local breakfast.

A very nice place to eat. The prices have stayed reasonable and the food is always hot and fresh. I had the pancakes on my last visit and I have to say that they were some of the best I've ever had.

The chicken fried steak was excellent, and I liked that they delivered the gravy on the side. Hash browns were perfectly cooked, and the scrambled eggs were A-OK. Service was very friendly, and the restaurant was clean. I'd be a regular if I lived in Madison. Cheers! RS

Outstanding service, delicious food and very clean (including the bathrooms). Expertly managed and well deserving of their reputation!

BLT Sandwich and Hash browns with onions and cheese.

Had some time to kill on a Friday morning before a doctors appointment. I had never been to Mia's and was in the area. Server: Andres, a pleasure to have met him. Wonderful personality. The restaurant has a certain charm about it. Several tables of little old men chatting and scheming. An old married couple that looks as if this is this is their routine place for Friday. The smell of coffee, clanking of cooking utensils hitting the cook top, and the soft hum of one big collective conversation underscored by classic Christmas music. I wasn't particularly hungry so I kept it simple with a BLT and Hash browns w/ onion and cheese. The hash browns turned out to be the star of the plate. A perfect crunch on the outside and a nice soft texture in the middle. Perfect southern Sunday morning breakfast on a Friday. The onions weren't over-powering and the cheese even had a noticeably good flavor. Owner: head chef, and he's not afraid to come out of the kitchen to say hello to his regulars. The owner used to run the entire cafe, but now he's in the kitchen and he wants it to stay that way There's something to be said about a place where the owner is on the grill. It means means that you're bound to have something that was made with love because you have to love to be on the grill. It's just a hard place to work, but as the owner it also gives you a greater measure of Quality Control. They are closed on Monday (I would be too if it were me) and they close after lunch.

Great food and service. Truly underrated. They seem to take pride in their food. Best meat and three, and breakfast, in Hsv/Madison.

Service was good. The food was horrible though. I had the pork chop and it was very dry. None of the sides had any seasoning. Won't be back.

Our server, Alana, was wonderful -- attentive and made the whole visit feel special. We kicked things off with the peach bellini carafe ($20), which was a fantastic start. For food, we ordered the skillet ($18) and the steak & eggs ($24), both of which were excellent. Great flavors, great portions, and a really solid brunch overall. On top of all that, it wasn't expensive either -- really solid value for the quality. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. Highly recommend if you're looking for a new brunch spot!

Cheyenne was our server and she did a good job! She was friendly, professional and knowledgeable! Cheyenne brought us complimentary biscuits and butter (or maybe another type of sauce) that my Sisters said were delicious! They were extra fluffy and baked correctly. We three shared the Steak Egg Rolls that were actually really good, very creamy and rich, and unique. I did not try the sauce/sauces that came with them. They were served at the correct temperature and a nice, rich appetizer that I would recommend! Sister #1 ordered the "Stoney River Breakfast Skillet" which was attractively plated in a skillet and appeared to be the correct temperature and her eggs were cooked to her liking. She was off put by the cheddar cheese that topped the skillet off - it looked very artificial (meaning bright orange yellow) and as if, instead of cheese, the egg yolks were sort of sitting atop the skillet. She's not a huge complainer and she finished the skillet. Sister #2 ordered the shrimp and grits, described as "...Cajun sauteed shrimp, Worcestershire cream reduction, bacon, cheese grits." The plate looked nice; however she said the shrimp were "beyond rubbery and more of the texture of shoe leather." I kept encouraging her to send it back and order something else and she said she said she was "hungry and it is edible." She did say the grits were excellent. Sister #1 and I tasted the sauce of the shrimp and grits and both of us found it very "tomato flavor forward and oddly sweet." Christine's lunch was a disappointment. Also, she should have sent the dish back, in my opinion, I'm sure Stoney River would have made it right. I got the small filet, I think it was seven ounces, cooked medium rare with asparagus. You get one side with this dish which is fine. The steak, once again, was cooked perfectly and seasoned perfectly with no need to add any salt/pepper and it was nicely seared! The steak was delicious! We had wine, which was good, too! We did not get dessert and were offered more "biscuits" to go (which seemed odd to me, it was like 2:30 in a very hot afternoon and I wasn't interested in carting biscuits around in a hot car); however, it was a thoughtful gesture. Last comment I have is no fault of Stoney River's, it's a "Clift Farms" thing, at least the Development Fee is Clift Farms specific, I don't know the "wine tax" fee. I really dislike fees. My $200.00+ bill included a three percent "development fee" of $5.58, a "Wine Tax" of $4.18 (I've never seen that before, what is a wine tax?) and regular "Sales Tax" of $6.36. Thank you for the friendly professional service and the extremely clean, comfortable in-person restaurant dining experience!

As he was cleaning the table beside us, he put the tub in the table top and as I turned my head to look over I lost my appetite seeing the condition of the tub. To know that he put it on top of the table made me even more disgusted. Not only was he bussing tables but he was also taking plates of food to tables. I, personally, would not have accepted food from him because it's very unlikely he washed his hands after cleaning tables off. Our waiter was nice but he looked very sloppy. I recall the Huntsville location having an Estancia label Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. It was a nice wine! They had it on a drink menu. Here, I didn't see a drink menu and I asked the very kind server for Estancia Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. She returned with a rose wine - yuck! I refused it and she took it away, asking me to write down what I wanted on her food order ticket, which I did. She returned with a white wine, and after one sip it tasted oxidized - another yuck! I walked it over to the bar and explained what I was trying to get and she showed me the bottle and it was a low end Robert Mondavi bottle of white wine (their "RM" label). When I realized that, I knew the wine was not oxidized, just low quality. I apologized and said I would take the glass back I had just brought her, but I think she had dumped it out. At any rate, I get it, Mexican restaurants are not widely known for their vast wine selections, and most people drink beer or margaritas. Robert Mondavi is not a bad label, but the bottle this Phil's carries is their low, low, end. Despite the wine snafu, the hubs and I enjoyed a birthday dinner for me with him enjoying their burrito (I think it was pork) and me trying to replicate my Sorority Sister's shrimp and chicken fajitas with the chicken fajita dinner. The chicken was tender and well seasoned meaning the fajitas were a win for me. The tortillas were fantastic, the service was good despite language barriers and wine quality issues, the restroom was spotless and we enjoyed a dinner out! Thanks, Phil's!

I'd never been to the Madison Phil's but why would I expect anything different? I wouldn't. I didn't. I should have. Everything was different. Our friends arrived before us. They finished the chips and salsa. Since nothing was refreshed, we never got to enjoy this staple. I ordered the daily drink special, a mango margarita. Salt or sugar? Sugar, of course. Except it came with salt. I ordered shrimp fajitas, no peppers, pico on a separate plate - I absolutely cannot tolerate even one tidbit of raw onion. (I know, I know, as hard as I try not to be, I'm one of "those"). My food arrived, big scoop of pico between the sour cream and guac, rendering half of each off limits. No peppers? The order must have said "extra" peppers. There was actually a half of a pepper on the griddle sitting on top of a bed of mixed peppers. I picked around the peppers, so disappointed in my meal. While the fresh tortillas did rock, the rest of the meal wasn't even worthy of the energy it took to eat it. If the food wasn't bad enough, our server was awful. We got our food but then she disappeared. She never came back to ask if we wanted something else. She never refilled drinks. She didn't even give us our checks. It took a few an attempts to get her attention so we could pay and head out. It's a little hard to fathom how sister restaurants, owned by the same people, run by the same people, could be such complete opposites. There's no way that I'm giving up on Phil's. I'm just giving up on the Madison location.
