I started with the Lupe Margarita which was uniquely delicious and flavorful...your tastebuds were treated to a salted rim with a hint of cayanne, and the drink itself was complex and yummy. Five stars to start. For my entree, I ordered the only Peruvian dish on the menu...Aji Gallina. This was slow cooked gently spiced chicken over garlic potatoes and rice. It was fabulous. I like my food on the spicy side so our server brought over a cruet of home made spicy sauce. This was the real deal...hot...but complex and wonderful. Oh Lupe. Prime spot, but just an unbearable bar to spend more than half a drinks worth of time at. The music is overwhelmingly loud, even for a college bar, credit for the mix of songs being fun. Upon entering greeted with unwelcoming looks and even less inviting demands from the staff, to "Order here." The seating options are spread out, although your choice is between the blaring speaker or the back of the bar hidden from anyone else. This bar is trying too much to be a frat. Easiest things for them to take care of; turn the music down, get some standing tables next to the dance floor, and maybe some staff that doesn't come off as creepy. read more

If there were more establishments in the world like Lupe's, the world would be a better place. (I'm not kidding.) Why? 5-star service 5-star food 5-star drinks 5-star welcoming committee, including smiles and gratitude from every single employee, including Lupe, himself. My wife and son and I had heard about Lupe's, and so we went this past Saturday night. I'm not sure I can express the level of attention that was paid to us (and to other patrons near us). We were thanked for coming....and by people other than our server: the bartender, the chef, the bussers. We felt appreciated, and that is priceless these days. Smiles, gratitude, yes...but also knowledge of the menus, the food, the preparation, etc. Top to bottom, it's Ritz Carlton-level service. Ok, but service aside, what's the food like? Well, in a word (or several) - astounding, delicious, creative, impeccably-prepared, true to form. The menu is varied and creative, but not in a contrived way. They are not trying to be arty - they are serving authentic dishes that deliver flavor in a way that is accessible, not fake...and boy do they deliver. The food is so well-prepared - the ingredients are noticeably fresh to the palate and well-arranged. The flavors are considered both individually and collectively when a dish is being plated and conceived. Everything goes together and flows together, and is deliberate. Gosh, we simply cannot say enough good things about Lupe's. We felt like we were a part of the family when we were there, and we left completely satisfied and with delicious flavors still ringing on our palates. Easily a top restaurant experience - when you feel comfortable in a restaurant setting, when you know all of the staff want to say YES to you, when you are thanked for your patronage, and when the food and drink aren't missing a beat, and deliver a flavor explosion, what else is there to say besides "thank you?" Lupe's serves elegantly simple and good food. From our one dinner visit on a weekend night in late June, it is not the kind of place that overwhelms you with large portion sizes and salty-starchy-sugary-heavy flavors. We ordered the Parillada plate for $19, which is basically a sampler platter of three meats with pickled onions, tortillas, and rice and beans on the side. I would have like a bit more accountrements in addition to the onions, but the meats are the main show and didn't disappoint. Each was pounded tender with a good subtle flavor from the dry rub or marinades. The portion size was enough for us, though we are relatively light eaters. The meal started with an appetizer of toasted bread chips and some kind of dip. I think the dip was artichoke based, and was light and delicious. It was a welcome substitute for the usual chips-and-salsa one expects at a Latin restaurant. We also had $5 beers and a $9 margarita, which was a little salty but overall pretty good too. It was slow at that moment but the staff was friendly, attentive and seemed to really care. The main dining room decor, similar to the food, has a fine but understated quality. Then in the back there is a bar area with some wild and interesting decor. I could not do it justice with words but it is interesting and I want to sit and drink there someday. I wonder if this place is properly situated across from campus. I think it's the kind of place that grownups, rather than students, would most appreciate. But my wife and I will definitely go back and explore more of the menu. The simple understated quality is something we dearly appreciate, and the prices are reasonable. read more

Our party of 4 ordered lots of different starters and entrees and there was not one thing that disappointed. This was the first place in the US that we have found real yucateco flavors. An absolute gem with a wonderful dinner vibe. If you are in the Corvallis area you HAVE to try this place . It's worth a drive too! After dinner the turns into a bar with a dance floor.
