But sometimes you walk into a place, feel the vibe, enjoy the situation, settle in with the locals, and tell yourself that life is good. I love a good local bar. As long as the locals are friendly, the service is decent, there are food options, and the place isn't disgustingly dirty, I am in. Alpine Tavern checked all of the boxes. Add in a horseshoe pit in the back and cheeseburgers on the menu, and Alpine Tavern is worth a stop in you ate in this neck of the woods.

A genuinely amiable woman, not Ruth, the owner, made me welcome and showed me a typed page, protected by a plastic cover, primarily describing the long history of the building itself. The millwork is reputed to be one of two or three pieces extant--one other known, in Tony's Place in Dallas. The bartender did know the millwork was demountable, the wall unit in two pieces, if divided on a horizontal plane, and the counter, which deteriorated to the point it had to be covered with formica. Beer only, economical, cash only. Friendly, genteel, suitable for seniors not looking for noise or trouble. Menu probably minimal. Very glad I took the trouble to drop in.

I have read many reviews online, and happened to be in the area around dinner time on a Saturday evening. We showed up at the right time, it wasn't quite packed yet. After we sat, a lot of locals started packing, in, and out. Even though they were so busy, the service didn't lack one bit. The women were on top of their game, and we had excellent service.
